ThismanualprovidesessentialinformationfortheoperationoftheMF5900seriesofgasmassflow
metersforgeneral‐purposegasmetrologyapplications.Theproductperformance,maintenance,
andtrouble‐shootingaswellastheinformationforproductorder,technicalsupport,andrepairare
alsoincluded.
TheMF5900massflowmeterisourfirstmassflowmeterutilizingthethermaltime‐of‐flightsensing
technologymadeonamicromachinedsiliconchip.Thetechnologyprovidesunprecedentedlinearity
andoffersthegascompatibilityoflimitedgasessuchasair,argon,nitrogen,oxygen,methane.Itis
thefirsttimethatanaircalibratedthermalmassflowmetercanbeappliedtothosegaseswithout
losingaccuracy.Thetechnologyalsooptsforadditionalflowandmediumparameterdetection.
Pleasestaytunedforournextupgrade.Siargoiscommittedtocontinuingproductinnovationwhile
offeringthebestvaluetoourcustomers.
Thisserialofproductsisdesignedforgeneralpurposemassflowsensingandcontrolpurposes.The

Uponreceiptoftheproducts,pleasecheckthepackingboxbeforethedismantlementofthepacking
materials.Ensurenodamagesduringshipping.Ifanyabnormalityisobserved,pleasecontactand
notifythecarrierwhoshippedtheproductandinformthedistributorsorsalesrepresentativesifthe
orderisnotplaceddirectlywiththemanufacturer,otherwise,themanufacturershouldbeinformed

Donotopenoralteranypartoftheproductwhichwouldleadtomalfunctionandirrecoverable
damage.Itwillalsoforfeitthetermsofthewarrantyandcauseliability.
Theproductatthetimeofshipmentisfullyinspectedforitsqualityandmeetsallsafetyrequirements.
Additionalsafetymeasuresduringtheinstallationshouldbeapplied.Thisincludes,butisnotlimited
totheleakageverificationprocedures,standardEDS(electrostaticdischarge)precautions,DC
voltageprecautions.Othertaskssuchascalibration,partreplacement,repair,andmaintenance
mustonlybeperformedbytrainedpersonnel.Uponrequests,themanufacturerwillprovide
necessarytechnicalsupportand/ortrainingofthepersonnel.
Theproductispreferabletobeinstalledhorizontally.Flowdirectionshouldbealignedwiththearrow
markonthemeterbody.Iftheflowingfluidmayhaveparticlesordebris,afilterisstrongly
recommendedtobeinstalledupstreamofthemeter.

whenthereisnoflowpresentinthepipeline.

5.1 Checktheproductspecifications
Beforestartingtousethisproduct,checktheproductspecificationsthatcanbefoundinthismanual
orthebasicinformationlocatedonthebackpaneloftheproduct.
ThedetailedproducttechnicalspecificationscanbefoundinSection7.Foraspecificapplication,
thepressureratingmustnotbehigherthanthesystempressuretobemeasured,andtheflowrange
shouldalsobewithinthespecifiedones.Inmostcases,theuseofahighfull‐scalerangedmeterfor
theverylowflowratemeasurementoftenresultsinerroneousdata.Thegastobemeasuredmust
alsobeconsistentwiththatspecifiedbytheproduct.Beparticularlycautiousaboutthesupplied
voltageindicatedinthespecification.Ahighervoltagemayleadtoirrecoverabledamage,anda
lowervoltagewillnotpowertheproductforanydesiredfunctions.
Forthebestperformanceoftheproduct,itisadvisedthatthegastobemeasuredmustbecleanand
freeofparticlesorotherforeignmaterials.
5.2 Checktheleakage
Checkgasleakagebeforeanymeasurement.Ifitisneeded,thepressurizednitrogenoraircanbe
usedfortheleakagecheck.
5.3 Powerthemeteranddigitaldataconnection
AlthoughthisproductcomplieswiththeCE‐requiredEMCregulations,italsorequirestheproductto
beusedaccordingtothestandardelectricaldevicepractice.Beforeconnectingthemeterwith
externalDCpoweroranAC‐DCadapter,makesurethesupplyvoltageiswithintherangeofthe
specifiedonesinSection7.BecautiousthatthestandardelectricaldeviceprecautionssuchasEDS
(electrostaticdischarge)andDCvoltageareobserved.Excessiveelectrostaticdischargemay
damagetheproduct.
ThepoweranddataportisastandardM12.Themanufacturer‐suppliedM12cablehasthescrew
lockingfixture.Lockthecableandmakesureitisproperlyengagingandwillnotbeaccidentallygot
unplugged.
Half‐duplexRS485Modbusisusedfordigitaldatacommunication.Makesurethewiresareproperly
connectedandconfiguredatthereceiverside.

totalizeroraccumulatedflowrate,andthelowerlineisthe
instantflowrate.
5.4.2 MENUentrywithaverifiedpassword
Attheflowmeasurement(main)display,pressthecentral“M”
MENUkey,itwillenterintothepasswordsettingandverification
MENU.Thedefaultpasswordis“11111”.Ifthepasswordisincorrect,
thedisplaywillreturntothemaindisplay.
Toenteranewpassword,pressthe“Up”or“Down”keytochange
thedigitthatflashes,andpressthe“M”keytoconfirm.Repeatthisprocessforall5digitsandthe
meterwillenterintothemenusettinginterfaces/screen.

AfterthepasswordbeingverifiedandenteringintotheMENU
settings,pressthe“Up”or“Down”keyuntilthescreenshowstheF2
–Addrasindicatedtotheleft.
TheModbusaddresshas3digits,whichcanbeanynumberbetween
001to255.Pressthe“M”keytoenterintothechangeaddressscreen.
Pressthe“Up”or“Down”keytochangetheflashingdigits,andthen
pressthe“M”keytoconfirm.Aftertheaddressisset,thedisplaywill
returntoF2–Addr,whichindicatesthetaskiscompleted.Pressthe

Thereare6baudratesselectable,dependingonyoursystem
requirements:4800,9600,19200,38400,57600,and115200.The
defaultbaudrateis9600.Usethe“Up”or“Down”keytoselectthe
desiredoneandpressthe“M”keytoconfirm.Thedisplaywillthen
returntotheF3–bPSscreen,whichindicatesthetaskiscompleted.
Usethe“Up”or“Down”keytoselectF99–qUITandthe“M”keytoexittheMENUandreturntothe
MainDisplayscreen.

5.4.5 Resetorcalibratetheoffset
Afteracertaintimeofusage,themeter’soffset(zeroflowrate)might
ormightnothaveasmallshift.Orwhenyouapplythemeterfor
differentgases,theoffsetmightbeshifted.Toensuremeasurement
accuracy,itisnecessarytoresetorcalibratetheoffset.Followingthe
above‐mentionedsteps,attheMENUsettingscreen,usethe“Up”or
“Down”keytoselectF11–oFFST.Beforeperformingthetask,make
surethereisabsolutelynoflowintheflowchannel,otherwise,itwill
createevenbiggererroneousmeasurementresults.
Pressthe“M”keytoconfirmthetask,anditwillopenthesub‐MENUaskingyoutoconfirm.Usethe
“Up”or“Down”keytoselectthedesiredoneandpressthe“M”keytoconfirm.Thedisplaywillthen
returntotheF11–oFFSTscreen,whichindicatesthetaskiscompleted.Usethe“Up”or“Down”key
toselectF99–qUITandthe“M”keytoexittheMENUandreturntotheMainDisplayscreen.
5.4.6 Gasconversionfactor(GCF)fordifferentgasmeasurement
Forthegeneralpurposeoftheapplication,agasconversionfactor
(GCF)canbeappliedtometerthegasdifferentfromthedefaultone
ortheoneusedforcalibration.TheGCFisdeterminedbythethermal
calorimetricsensingprincipleaswellasthemeterfluidicdynamic
designandthecontrolcircuitry.Contactthemanufacturertoobtain
thevaluescorrespondingtothecorrectmodels.
TheGCFforairis1000.Note:Ifthemeterduringpurchaseis
orderedforaspecialrealgascalibration,contactthemanufacturer
beforefurtherproceeding.
Followingtheabove‐mentionedsteps,attheMENUsettingscreen,usethe“Up”or“Down”keyto
selectF12–GCF.Pressthe“M”keytoconfirm,anditwillopenthesub‐MENUshowingthecurrent
gasconversionvalue.Usethe“Up”or“Down”andthe“M”confirmingkeytoinputthedesiredvalue,
andpressthe“M”keyagaintocompletethetask.ThedisplaywillthenreturntotheF12–GCFscreen,
whichindicatesthetaskiscompleted.Usethe“Up”or“Down”keytoselectF99–qUITandthe“M”
keytoexittheMENUandreturntotheMainDisplayscreen.
ThisGCFfactorcanalsobeusedequivalenttothe“K”factortoadjustthemeterduetothesystem
deviations.Take3to5datapointsusingyourpreferredreferencemeter,andperformtheleast
squarefittingtoidentifytheKfactor,andinputheretomakethemetersynchronizewithyoursystem.

Thisfunctionisreservedforfutureupgrades.Thecurrentmodelsare
configuredtobeEnglishorChinesebasedontheshipping
geographicregions.However,ifonelikestoswitchbetweenthese
twodefaultlanguages,followingtheabove‐mentionedsteps,atthe
MENUsettingscreen,usethe“Up”or“Down”keytoselectF39–
dISP.Pressthe“M”keytoconfirm,anditwillopenthesub‐MENU
showingthecurrentlanguage.Usethe“Up”or“Down”andthe“M”
confirmingkeytoselectthedesiredone,andpressthe“M”keyagain
tocompletethetask.ThedisplaywillthenreturntotheF39–dISPscreen,whichindicatesthetask
iscompleted.Usethe“Up”or“Down”keytoselectF99–qUITandthe“M”keytoexittheMENU
andreturntotheMainDisplayscreen.
5.4.8 Selectthetotalizeroraccumulatedflowrateunit
Thisfunctionallowstheusertoselectthetotalizeroraccumulated
flowrateunitsofthecubicmeter(m3)orstandardcubicfeet(SCF).
Followingtheabove‐mentionedsteps,attheMENUsettingscreen,
usethe“Up”or“Down”keytoselectF31–UnT‐A.Pressthe“M”
keytoconfirm,anditwillopenthesub‐MENUshowingthecurrent
unit.Usethe“Up”or“Down”andthe“M”confirmingkeytoselect
thedesiredone,andpressthe“M”keyagaintocompletethetask.
ThedisplaywillthenreturntotheF31–UnT‐Ascreen,which
indicatesthetaskiscompleted.Usethe“Up”or“Down”keyto
selectF99–qUITandthe“M”keytoexittheMENUandreturntotheMainDisplayscreen.
5.4.9 Selecttheinstantflowrateunit
Thisfunctionallowstheusertoselecttheinstantflowrateunits
ofastandardliterperminute(SLPM)orstandardcubicfeetper
hour(SCFH).Followingtheabove‐mentionedsteps,atthe
MENUsettingscreen,usethe“Up”or“Down”keytoselectF32
