Activities done at heights are inherently dangerous.
Understand and accept the risks involved before
participating. You are responsible for your own
actions and decisions. Before using this product,
read and understand all instructions and warnings
that accompany it and familiarise yourself with its
proper use, capabilities and limitations. We
recommend that every climber seeks proper training
in the use of the equipment. Failure to read and

Read this notice carefully
This device was designed to offer you the degree of
safety expected from personal protective equipment in
accordance with the European Regulation (EU)
2016/425.
Safetymeasuresandwarnings
a) There are innumerable and even unimaginable
possible modes of use of this device. Only techniques
shown in the gures that are not crossed out or
displaying a skull are recommended and covered by the
warranty.
b) This product must be used exclusively by adequately
skilled persons, otherwise the user must be constantly
supervised by trained personnel, who must guarantee
for the safety. This includes liability against damages,
injuries and death incurred by improper use or misuse
of the equipment.
c) This product may be used combined with personal
protective equipment conforming to Regulation (EU)
2016/425 and compatibly with the relevant information.
d) Combinations of equipment may result in unforeseen
risks.
e) In work at a height the foreman must ensure proper
management and planning (including risk assessment
and rescue plan) of the work being performed.
f) The primary functions of Sirius are progression along
a working line, positioning and descent in rescue. It may
be necessary to supplement arrangements with
collective or personal means of protection against falls
from a height. When used in accordance with EN 12841
type C it must always be used in conjunction with a fall-
arrest device on an independent safety line.
g) Avoid any slack on the anchor line.
h) The lifetime of this product will be extended if it is
used with care. In particular, avoid rubbing against
abrasive surfaces and/or sharp edges.
i) The braking action of the device and thus your safety
may be considerably reduced if the device or the rope is
dirty, oily, muddy or icy.
j) Prolonged use in salty environments (e.g. sea cliffs)
may affect the performance of the product.

(see work and stock temperature).
l) Avoid any contact with chemical reagents as they may
affect the performance of this product. Contact the
producer if in doubt.
m) This device is not tested to work in explosive
atmospheres.
n) Avoid descending into electrical, chemical, or thermal
hazards. Do not use equipment around moving
machinery.
o) The descender device should never be left in place
(specicallyoutdoors),e.g.ataworkstation,becauseof
the weathering deterioration of the rope.

To install the descender on the rope, press the opening
button and simultaneously slide the housing sides apart
(gure3a).Threadtheworkinglineintheslotbetween
the cam and the becket and lead it around the cam so
that the free end of the rope exits the device between
bothjammingelements(gure3b).Slidethehousing
sides back together. The device is only closed properly
once the opening button locks the top housing side and
is fully released (gure 3c). The descender may be
attached by means of an oval locking connector (EN
362 or ANSI Z359.12) either to the harness‘ ventral and
sternalattachmentpoint(gure6)oritcanbefastened
to an anchor (gure 8a). Wrong insertion is partially
preventedbytheshapeofthecam(gure3d).Consult

Sirius features one-way locking of the rope.
Under load the friction of the rope rotates the cam to jam
theropeagainstthexedjammingelement.Togradually
release the grip on the rope, unlock the handle by
pressing the safety latch and rotate it (always hold the
free end of the rope). In case of over-rotation (e.g. panic
reaction), the device engages in the 2nd (anti-panic)
stop. By releasing the handle, it automatically returns in
the park position.
In the other direction the rope moves relatively
unimpeded.

Check that the sides of the housing cannot be slid apart
and the closing button is fully released (the device is
closed correctly).
• Check whether the rope is inserted correctly (according
to the sketch on the housing).
• Before each use, carry out an operational check of the
device by loading it and testing descent functionality
whilesecuredbyothermeans(gure5a).
• It is essential to assess the reliability and security of
the entire safety system you are relying on. Non-
exhaustive list includes:
- adequate resistance of the anchors (EN 795, ANSI/
ASSE Z359.1 or according to valid regulations) and the
structuretheyarexedon;
- correct (higher) positioning of the anchors to prevent
pendulum effects or arrest a fall;
- correct positioning of the ropes:
• removing or protecting them from sharp edges or
pointsofchang;
• preventing ill running of the descender (e.g. loaded
over an edge or at an angle to the rope);
• rope redundancy in rope access;
• to tie a stopper knot at the free end of the rope.
Any overload or dynamic loading of the descender may
damage the rope!

While loading the system, the user should hold with one
hand the free end of the rope and with the other hand
unlockandgraduallypullthehandle(gure6a).This
unblocks the rope and allows for a controlled descent.
The maximum permitted speed of descent is 2 m/s. By
pulling the handle down to its terminal position (rotation
block), the user will activate the descender‘s 2nd stop
position (anti panic) and the descent will be stopped
instantly. To resume descending, return the handle in
theparkposition(gure4),andrestarttheprocess.To
position just let the handle go. It will park automatically
(gure6b).Takecaretoplaceyourback-updevicehigh
on the safety line and lock it during positioning.

For shorter ascents, install a rope clamp in the working
end of the rope above the descender device. While
lifting yourself on the rope clamp, pull the free end of the
ropeexitingSiriusupwards(gure7a).Ifergonomically
easier pulling is sought after, re-direct the rope over the
rope clamp’s carabiner or install a small pulley in it
(gure7b).Neverallowslackbetweentheropeclamp
and the descender device!

Re-directing the rope over a carabiner is suggested to
lowerfromaxedposition(gure8a).Forhalvingthe
forceontheline,thebecketmaybeemployed(gure
8b). With no or little tension pay the rope out by holding
the free end and pressing on the cam to open it. Pull the
ropewiththeotherhand(gure8c).
Always hold the free end of the rope during manipulation.
Never allow slack between the user and the anchor
point. Connection of the descender device to the anchor
point should be arranged so that descent is not impeded.

HaulingfromaxedpositionwithSiriusasaprogress
capture device is done by means of a 3:1 pulley system
(gure 9a). Ergonomically easier pulling from above
may be attained by employing another re-directional
pulley on the free end of the rope. As with lowering,

higher loads may be controlled by employing the becket
and consequently attaining a 6:1 mechanical advantage
(gure9b).

Loweringfromananchor:followinstructionsongure
8a and 8b. Double person load on working line (Figure
10a): The rescuer fastens the descender to his harness
and connects the injured person by means of an
additional connecting element. Simultaneous descent
of the rescuer and the victim on separate lines (Figure
10b): The rescuer gradually pulls the victims handle by
means of a cordelette as he/she descends so that the
victim’s descent is initiated and kept constant. Be
mutually secured. For a smooth descent, higher tension
of the victim’s free rope is recommended. WARNINGS:
Rescue and evacuation manoeuvres may only be
practicedbypersonsspecicallytrainedforthepurpose.
For all rescue manoeuvres the use of gloves is
recommended. To avoid loss of control and rope
damage (heat), lower descent speeds are advisable
during rescue operations.

Parallel descenders technique may be adopted in cases
were risk assessment discloses more established
methods as unsafe. Both single person (11a) and
double person (11b) loads are applicable. With light
loads consider that force on each descender is halved.
Generalinformation
Regularexamination:
Regular periodical inspections must be carried out by a
competent person at least once a year and according to
manufacturer‘s recommendations. Furthermore, we
would sincerely recommend one set of equipment is
used by one person only as its history of use is best
traced and understood in this way.
• Before each use, it is vital to check all PPE equipment
intended to be used. Verify that all descender’s
components (housing, handle, steel elements, button
and rope) are faultless and in good working condition.

• Do not hesitate to retire the device if:

- It fails to pass the inspection.
- It shows signicant wear, deformation, cracks and
corrosion.
- After an overload or a major impact. They could cause
internal or invisible damage that may signicantly
weaken its strength. In case of uncertainty treat the
device as damaged or consult SKYLOTEC.
- When its full history of use is not known.
Packing,storage,maintenanceandcleaning
Each product is packed with its INSTRUCTIONS FOR
USE.
Proper maintenance and storage are imperative to
ensure correct functioning of the product (as well as all
your equipment) and thus your safety.
Clean the product with a brush under running cold water
of domestic supply. If the stains persist, clean it in
lukewarm water with ordinary soap. Then rinse
thoroughly, wipe it with a towel and dry naturally in a
shaded ventilated place away from sources of heat.
If needed, oil sparingly the moving joints of the
descender.
Temperatures
While it is permissible to use this product within the
temperaturerangefrom-30°C(140°F)to+60°C(-22
°F), it is advisable to stock it in a dry place at room
temperature.
Lifetime
Lifetime is set by the date of production and is
theoretically unlimited. Service time starts with the date
of rst use and depends on frequency and mode of
application, on environment where it is used (e.g.
marine, cave, corrosive atmosphere), and on
mechanical wear and damage. It is therefore very
difcult to determine the expected service time of a
particular device. Its due retirement is therefore left to
user‘s regular examinations and competent person‘s
annual inspections.
Guaranteeanditslimitations
This product is guaranteed for 3 years from purchase
against any faults in materials or manufacture. The
guarantee does not apply in cases of misuse using it

with components that may affect its function, normal
wearandtear,unauthorisedmodicationsoralterations,
improper use, improper maintenance, accidents,
negligence, damage or if the product is used for a
purpose it was not designed for. If you discover a defect,
you should return the product to the reseller you
purchased the product from or directly to SKYLOTEC.
SKYLOTEC is not responsible for the consequences
of direct, indirect, accidental or any other type of
damageresultingfromtheuseofitsproducts.

g) Vermeiden Sie jegliches Spiel zwischen dem
Benutzer und dem Ankerpunkt des Ankerseils.
h) Die Lebensdauer dieses Produktes verlängert sich,
wenn es mit Sorgfalt verwendet wird. Insbesondere

Seeklippen) kann die Leistung des Produktes
beinträchtigen.
k) Setzen Sie das Gerät nicht großer Hitze oder Kälte
aus (siehe Arbeits- und Lagertemperatur).
l) Jeden Kontakt mit chemischen Reagenzien
vermeiden, da diese die Leistung dieses Produktes
beeinträchtigen können. In Zweifelfällen den Hersteller
kontaktieren.
m)Dieses Gerät wurde nicht für den sicheren Gebrauch
in explosionsgefährdeten Bereichen getestet.
n) Vermeiden Sie den Kontakt mit elektrischen,
chemischen oder thermischen Gefahren. Verwenden

o) Das Abseilgerät sollte nie an Ort und Stelle
(besonders im Freien), d. h. am Arbeitsplatz, wegen
Verwitterungsverschleiß des Seils zurückgelassen
werden.
