Thank you for purchasing FAS-402 series sealer!
FAS-402 series is a table-top vacuum sealer controlled by the microcomputer, which makes it possible to set up the
various operation patterns that the customers require.
This manual explains the terms that is used when setting the seal conditions. Please read this manual thoroughly
before use for the better understanding on how to set up/operate the FAS-402 series.
The setting range of heating/cooling temperature is indicated in both degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit. Please check
which unit your machine uses, and refer to the one that matches to your machine.
1.Set up the operation patterns
Two commonly-used operation patterns are pre-
installed to the machine at the time of factory
shipment.
Before starting the operation, please set up the
suitable operation patterns for your application.
Otherwise, you cannot operate the machine in the
way other than the pre-installed operation patterns.
You can set the operation patterns according to the
on-screen display of the control unit. Please refer to
this manual for the detail.
2.Seal test and optimum seal condition
There are many variations of package materials and
contents that the customers use. Please decide the
optimum seal conditions including heating
temperature, time, cooling temperature, as well as
the vacuum time (level) according to your needs
after properly performing the seal tests.
Please refer to the following table. It shows the
temperature of dissolution for each kind of film.
Please note that this value will be greatly affected
by the environment, thickness of package material
and other conditions.

Before using, always verify the voltage
specification of your particular unit and operate it at
the correct voltage.
Please note the following:
1) The voltage specification of your unit is
listed on the label (or in some cases an
aluminum plate) which displays the serial
number. This label can be found on the
machine body.
2) The explanations and illustrations in this
operators' manual utilize the following
standard plug configurations most common
in Japan. However, due to the various
configurations in use worldwide, these may
not necessarily correspond with the one
attached to your specific unit.
The International System of
Units (SI) is a consistent
system that ordinary people as
well as professionals can use.
This logical unit system is
used in every field from
science to industry to
education and even daily life.
As the SI unit system is gradually replacing the
standard pressure unit, this manual primarily uses
SI to indicate pressure. (As a reference, however,
we have also listed the previous notations.)
The following marks are used in this manual to
easily identify the conditions of risks, damages, or
some tips for the optimal use of your unit.

Thank you for purchasing the FAS-402 series table top nozzle type vacuum sealer.
Please read all of the safety and operating instructions before operating this machine. Periodic maintenance
and proper operation are necessary to ensure safety when using this impulse sealer. Keep this manual on hand
when operating the sealer. Set the heating time according to the material and thickness of the film.
As a result of research to further improve the FAS-402 series, some details in the operating instructions may
differ from your actual machine.

Warning In an emergency, unplug the power cord
immediately
This sealer incorporates a number of safety devices and is carefully
designed to prevent fires or other malfunctions. However, should all of
the safety devices fail simultaneously, there is a possibility of the fluoro
glass sheet catching fire due to a failure of the heating circuit's tripping
mechanism that results in the heating element overheating. Should
smoke or fire appear from the fluoro glass sheet, immediately turn OFF
the power or unplug the power cord from the outlet.
Warning Confirm proper electric power source
Insert the electric power plug fully into the wall outlet.
Make sure power source has the specified voltage and electric power as
explained in the operating instructions. DO NOT use an extension
cord, as the machine may malfunction or may result in fire. Machine
will malfunction if connected to anything other than the specified
voltage.
Warning Do not insert any metal objects into the sealing
area
Please do not place any metal objects into the sealing area during
operation. This could cause electrocution.
Warning Do not use for packaging liquids
Do not splash water on the machine or use machine for packaging
liquids since machine is not waterproof. There is a danger of
electrocution or malfunction of the machine.
Warning When replacing parts, unplug the power plug
Maintenance of the machine is important. Parts should be replaced in
accordance with the operating instructions. There is a risk of danger if
the parts are not replaced properly. Before replacing parts, unplug the
machine from the power source.
Warning Do not modify the machine
Modification of the sealer or the use of unspecified parts may not only
lead to damage of the machine, but there is also a risk of danger to the
operator. Please do not tamper with the machine. Accidents or damage
caused by modification by the customer is the sole responsibility of the
customer.

Caution Do not place hands in the sealing area
With prolonged use, the sealing area will retain heat and become hot.
If you place your fingers in this area, there is a possibility of burns.
Pressing the foot switch will lower the seal lever and pressure is applied
to the seal area. Please be careful not to pinch your fingers to the
sealing area. When two or more operators are involved in the machine
operation, please pay extra attention to avoid accidents.
Warning Do not use parts other than those specified
When replacing parts, always use only specified parts sold through Van
der Stahl Scientific. We are not responsible for malfunctions caused by
the use of unspecified parts.
Warning If the power switch automatically turns to the OFF
position
If the power switch will automatically turn to the OFF position, there is
a possibility of malfunction of the machine such as short circuit.
Do not operate the machine until the cause of the shut down is
ascertained and the problem has been addressed.
Caution Be careful of the vacuum nozzle
A vacuum nozzle comes out automatically in a few seconds after
finishing the operation. Please be careful of the moving nozzle.
If you bring your face or hands close to the sealing area, you can get
hurt with the nozzle. Also if the sealed pouch is left in the sealing area,
the nozzle can heart the packaging content. Please make sure to remove
the pouch when the lever is open.
Caution Do not use in the following places
Do not operate the machine in the places with high humidity and/or
where the water/vapor can spill on the machine. The machine parts may
become rusted. There is a danger of electrocution and/or machine
malfunction due to the insulation failure.
The small particles can also cause the insulation failure, machine
malfunction as well as short circuit. Do not operate the machine in the
dusty locations or avoid packaging the powdery items.

Caution Use machine properly
Read the operating instructions carefully and operate sealer correctly.
Accidents or damage caused by misuse of the machine not in
accordance with the operating instructions are the sole responsibility of
the customer.
Caution Printer outlet
The printer outlet is located on the top of the machine frame cover.
It is to be used ONLY when mounting the optional printer (FEP-V-N2).
Do NOT attempt to plug any other electronic devices into this outlet.
Heating temperature should be set at a minimum
Set sealer so that an acceptable seal is completed at the lowest heating
temperature. Excessively high heating temperatures will damage the
fluoro glass sheet, glass tape and other consumables, as well as result in
heating element breakage. This will lead to decreased work productivity
and unnecessary power consumption.
Allow sufficient cooling
With an impulse type sealer, residual heat after the heating cycle has
been completed is dispersed through the pressure lever and machine
frame, allowing the film to set under pressure. Setting the cooling
temperature excessively low will reduce the work efficiency. Be sure to
allow sufficient cooling for each seal cycle.

If there is a malfunction in the temperature sensor
The temperature sensor is designed to monitor and control heating
temperature by directly measuring the temperature of heating element.
Therefore, when the sensor tip is not positioned correctly or the sensor
is disconnected, the machine will show the error message "Poor
heating" and the lever returns to the initial position.
When replacing the consumable parts such as heating element or the
temperature sensor, please be sure to position the temperature sensor
correctly.
When the fluoro glass sheet, silicone rubber becomes damaged
The fluoro glass sheet, silicone rubber will start to wear with use. Once
they are damaged, it will be difficult to achieve smooth and strong
seals. Thoroughly read how to replace the parts and be careful when
doing so.
Dust in the sealing area
Dust will prevent attainment of a smooth seal. It could also cause
damage to heating element and/or other routine maintenance parts.
Before using the machine, clean the sealing area.
The FAS-402 series is an impulse sealer
Do not become alarmed if the sealing area does not become hot after
the power switch is turned to the ON position. The machine has not
malfunctioned.
The sealer uses an impulse method so the heating element will not
become hot just by plugging the unit in or turning the power switch to
the ON position. The heater will only become hot for an instant when
the heating process is in operation. However, after extended periods
of use, the sealing area may become hot.
Run test trials before beginning operation
Depending on the type of film being used, heating / cooling / pressure
strength conditions will differ. Run test trials to find the optimum
sealing condition, especially when trying to find the tightest seal
possible.
Other safeguards

This sealer is an impulse sealer with sponges located on
the sealing section to secure the nozzle prior to air
removal. The air supplied by air pump drives the valve,
cylinder, and nozzle to complete the sealing.
In addition, the vacuum and air removal is done going
though nozzle suction port.
The selector switch on the panel allows the operator to
choose from three modes of operations: "sealing only"
and "manual vacuum and sealing" and "timer-based
vacuum and sealing".
The operation process is controlled by control panel
and performed just simply by pressing the foot switch.
1The impulse sealer is a machine which sends strong electric current quickly to the thin ribbon heater,
which presses against the film and instantly heat seals the package. Though this machine yields
superior quality sealing, it is not compatible with films thicker than that indicated in the diagram
below, sponge-like sheets, and materials which are not able to withstand high heat.
2Film thickness limits for the FAS-402 series are described below. The machine cannot seal bags
which are thicker than that indicated. The machine may malfunction if you try to exceed the limits
of the machine.

For safety and efficient operation, please set the sealer
in the appropriate place as described below.
Insert the foot switch to the socket located on the side
of machine body. Turn and push the collar to lock it in
place.
The table height and angle can be adjusted by changing
the table mounting position to the angle bars that is
located in front of the machine as in the right
illustration.
1Overlap the holes “a” on the table side and “b”
on the angle bar side and fix the table using a
bolt. The position “b” can be any other holes on
the angle bar at the desired height.
2Choose the lower bolt position either “c” or “d” on
the table side, and fix to “e” on the angle bar side
using a bolt.
When fixed at the hole “c”, table has tilting
angle.
When fixed at the hole “d”, table is in the
horizontal position.
3Securely fix the table with bolts and wing nuts
after adjusting the height and angle.
7 Proper use of the sealer

Warning Installing the machine on an unstable or
inclined surface may cause the overturn of
the sealer. Be sure to install the machine
on a flat, horizontal surface and secure the
appropriate workbench.
Warning Do not use the sealer on a wet floor. Do
not expose the sealer to water drops or
vapor. This may cause a failure and/or a
short circuit of the machine.
Warning Using the machine in high humidity will
have the bad effect on machine’s
pneumatic parts. The condensation of
water from the built-in compressor will
increase, and it will shorten the life of the
dry filter.

The nozzle height that comes out from the seal area can
be finely adjusted to the optimum level for each
operation.
1Lift up the frame cover.
2Turn the hollow set screw on the top of the
nozzle supporter with the 2.5mm hexagonal
wrench.
To lower the height : Turn right (clockwise)
To raise the height : Turn left
(counterclockwise)
Two types of dry filters (black and red) are installed on
the side of the machine. The dry filter is a consumable
part that will need periodic replacement.
Check the piping on the red filter side before or after the
operation. If you see the water drop on the tube, you
need to replace the filter regardless of the normal
replacement cycle indicated below:

Before and after the sealing operation, clean the filter
by moving the weeping valve back and forth several
times.

included in the accessories.
The dry filter installed to the FAS-402 series has the
auto-drain system. The moisture inside the filter is
exhausted with the exhaust air through the drain hose
on the side of machine. Please make sure to place a
container under the drain to catch the draining water.

Be sure to connect the power plug directly into the wall
outlet with adequate current carrying capacity as
described at “10 Specification.” Insert the electric power
plug fully into the wall outlet.
1Turn ON the circuit breaker.
2Turn ON the power switch.
Built-in compressor and cooling fan will run.

Warning The power consumption varies depending
on each model. Check that the capacity of
the outlet is larger than the power
consumption of your machine, and plug it
directly to the outlet.
Using an outlet with a smaller capacity or
an extension cord will cause a drop in
voltage, resulting in malfunction and even
fire because of overheating of the cable
and outlet. Be sure to use an appropriate
outlet.
Warning When you have changed the standard plug
provided, check the connection.
The wires are connected as shown in the
figure. When the ground wire is not
connected to the correct terminal, a short
on the power source side or an electric
leakage is caused.

After setting all the conditions at the control unit, hold
the bag by both hands and stretch it tight. Set the bag
between seal levers. (Insert the vacuum nozzle into the
bag if necessary.) Depress the foot switch to proceed the
operation. Please find the most suitable conditions as
you do test sealing.
1After finishing operation, always turn OFF the
power switch.
2Shut off the circuit breaker.
The machine will stop completely.
Compressor and cooling fan will stop running.
Unplug the power outlet in the case of not using the
machine for a while.
After use, please clean up the parts such as dry filter.
Please refer to “9 Replacing the routine maintenance
parts” for the detail.
After the vacuuming -if the vacuuming is set-, heating
and cooling cycle has finished, the pressure lever
returns to the initial position, and the sealing is
complete. If a sealing is not clean enough, adjust the
heating time or heating/cooling temperature. Also adjust
the vacuuming if necessary.
