1 The voltage specification of your unit is listed on the label which displays the serial
number. This label can be found on the machine body.
2 Please confirm the plug configuration on your specific unit. The explanations and
illustrations in this operator's manual utilize the plug configurations most common in
Japan.

Please read all of the safety and operating instructions before operating this machine. Periodic
maintenance and proper operation are necessary to ensure safety when using this impulse sealer.
Keep this manual on hand when operating the sealer.
Set the heating time according to the material and thickness of the film.
As a result of research to further improve the OPL series, some details in the operating
instructions may differ from your actual machine. For operating problems or product
information, please contact your local dealer.

Safety Measures Anti over-heating circuit device When overheating occurs (i.e., when power continues to be distributed to
the heating element for longer than about 3 seconds), the power switch
automatically shuts off to stop further heating.
Anomaly detection Should abnormal situation arise, it will be indicated on the LCD screen on the
control unit and by an alarm sound. See “14 Error message and solutions”

1The impulse sealer is a machine which sends strong electric current quickly to the thin ribbon heater,
which presses against the film and instantly heat seals the package. Though this machine yields
superior quality sealing, it is not compatible with films thicker than that indicated in the diagram
below, sponge-like sheets, and materials which are not able to withstand high heat.
2Film thickness limits for the OPL series are described below. The machine cannot seal bags which
are thicker than that indicated. The machine may malfunction if you try to exceed the limits of the
machine.

Warning In an emergency, unplug the power cord immediately
This sealer incorporates a number of safety devices and is carefully
designed to prevent fires or other malfunctions. However, should all of
the safety devices fail simultaneously, there is a possibility of the fluoro
glass sheet catching fire due to a failure of the heating circuit's tripping
mechanism that results in the heating element overheating. Should
smoke or fire appear from the fluoro glass sheet, immediately turn OFF
the power from the outlet.
Warning Confirm proper electric power source
Make sure power source has the specified voltage and electric power as
to your machine model. DO NOT use an extension cord, as the machine
may malfunction due to voltage drop or may result in fire.
Machine will malfunction if connected to anything other than the
specified voltage.
Insert the electric power plug fully into the wall outlet.
Warning Do not use for packaging liquids
Do not splash water on the machine or use machine for packaging
liquids since machine is not waterproof. There is a danger of
electrocution or malfunction of the machine.
Warning Do not insert any metal objects into the sealing area
Please do not place any metal objects into the sealing area during
operation. This could cause electrocution.
Warning When replacing parts, unplug the power plug
Maintenance of the machine is important. Parts should be replaced in
accordance with the operating instructions. There is a risk of danger if
the parts are not replaced properly. Before replacing parts, unplug the
machine from the power source and replace parts referring to “9

Warning Do not modify the machine
Modification of the OPL series or the use of unspecified parts may not
only lead to damage of the machine, but there is also a risk of danger to
the operator. Please do not tamper with the machine. Accidents or
damage caused by modification by the customer is the sole
responsibility of the customer.

When replacing parts, always use only specified parts sold through Van
der Stahl Scientific. We are not responsible for malfunctions caused by
the use of unspecified parts.
Warning If the power switch automatically turns OFF
If after 3 seconds heating is not complete after it has been initiated, the
power switch will automatically turn OFF. There is a possibility of
malfunction of the machine. Do not operate the machine until the cause
of the shut down is ascertained and the problem has been addressed.
Caution Do not use in the following places
Do not operate machine in the following places since there is a danger
of malfunction:
Caution Do not place hands in the sealing area
1With prolonged use, the sealing area will retain heat and
become hot. If you place your fingers in this area, there is a
possibility of burns.
2Do not place hands between the seal jaws (pressure lever and
seal frame).
3Should the foreign objects such as fingers are clamped between
the sealing area and the sealer cannot move to the heating
process within 0.8 seconds, the lever automatically returns to
the initial position. However, the strong pressure is applied
especially to the both ends to the sealing area, and there a
danger that the sealing process may start without notice.
Caution Use the machine properly
Read “8 Proper use of the sealer” in this manual carefully and operate
sealer correctly. Accidents or damage caused by misuse of the machine
not in accordance with the operating instructions are the sole
responsibility of the customer.

ƔTo achieve a strong seal
Proper sealing pressure is important in achieving a strong seal. Follow
directions on proper sealing pressure adjustments and set accordingly.
See ³6HDOLQJSUHVVXUHDGMXVWPHQWPHWKRG´ĺSDJH31) for the
details.
ƔDust in the sealing area
Dust will prevent attainment of a smooth seal. It could also cause
damage to heating element and/or other routine maintenance parts.
Before using the machine, clean the sealing area.

Set sealer so that an acceptable seal is completed at the lowest heating
temperature. Excessively high heating temperatures will damage the
fluoro glass sheet, glass tape and other consumables, as well as result in
heating element breakage. This will lead to decreased work productivity
and unnecessary power consumption.

Cooling process is important when using an impulse sealer. After the
film is heated, the film must cool with the frame and pressure lever in
the closed position. Setting the cooling temperature excessively low
will decrease the work productivity. Set the cooling temperature that is
suitable for each film.
ƔWhen the fluoro glass sheet, silicone rubber becomes damaged
The fluoro glass sheet, silicone rubber will start to wear with use. Once
they are damaged, it will be difficult to achieve smooth and strong
seals. Thoroughly read how to replace the parts and be careful when
doing so.

Do NOT attempt to plug any other electronic devices into this outlet.
ƔRun test trials before beginning operation
Find the optimum sealing conditions by conducting seal tests before
proceeding. Achieving a superior seal with an impulse sealer is
determined by heating / cooling / pressure strength. Depending on the
type of film being used, heating / cooling / pressure strength conditions
will differ. Run test trials to find the optimum sealing condition on
customer’s responsibility, especially when trying to find the tightest
seal possible.
ƔThe OPL series is an impulse sealer
Do not become alarmed if the sealing area does not become hot after
the power switch is turned to the ON position. The machine has not
malfunctioned.
The sealer uses an impulse method so the heating element will not
become hot just by plugging the unit in or turning the power switch to
the ON position. The heater will only become hot for an instant when
the heating process is in operation. However, after extended periods
of use, the sealing area may become hot.
ƔPrinter outlet
The printer outlet is located on the underside of the seal frame head. It
is to be used ONLY when mounting the optional printer.
ƔIf there is a malfunction in the temperature sensor
The temperature sensor is designed to monitor and control heating
temperature by directly measuring the heater temperature. Therefore,
the machine will not operate when the sensor tip is not positioned
correctly or the sensor is disconnected.
When replacing the consumable parts such as heating element or the
temperature sensor, please be sure to position the temperature sensor
correctly. Please refer to “9-8 Temperature sensor replacement” for the
detail.

Use the sealer only as described in below “8 Proper use of the sealer”. There is a risk of danger and malfunctions
if the machine is not used in accordance with this manual.
This machine is a desk-top sealer. Set the product level
on a solid base that fully withstands the weight of the
product. If an appropriate workbench cannot be
secured, use the optional FA/OPL stand.
A Table switch-plate attachment
When using an air pedal as a foot switch, this
attachment is not necessary.
1OPL-200, OPL-300 Series
Fix the table switch-plate to the body frame
with the wing nuts provided. The height is
micro-adjustable for easy operation. (The wing
nuts are attached to the bolts at the position
where the table is attached to the body frame.)
2OPL-450, OPL-600 Series
The table-switch plate cannot be mounted to
these sealer models. See “8-6 Selecting
operation method” >>> “How to set each
RSHUDWLRQPRGH´ĺSDJH16).
B Standard table attachment
For the OPL series of sealers, the standard table will be
optional parts except for OPL-450-5.
Fix to the seal frame using the wing nuts and bolts.
The height can be adjusted to the optimum level
depending on the application.
C Mount the special table (Optional)
The special table can be mounted to the FA/OPL stand,
which is sold individually. (The air pedal cannot be
installed to the special table.)

Insert the air pedal hose securely into the elbow of the
main frame air switch.
The control unit display will turn on when the power
switch, located on the side of the common frame, is
pushed on.
The power cord is located on the right side of the
machine, when facing toward it. See the label attached
to the machine to determine the proper voltage and
electrical power. Make sure the electrical outlet has
adequate current carrying capacity. Insert the electric
power plug fully into the wall outlet.

Heating temperature, heating time, cooling
temperature, and auto cycle interval are set on the
control unit.
Set values vary according to bag (film) material or
thickness, etc., therefore adjust and set each time after
changing films.
Push the SET button, each mode appears in the
following order on the digital display:
TEMP DISPLAY -> HEAT TEMP -> HEATING TIME
-> COOLING TEMP -> AUTO CYCLE INTERVAL
Designated lamp lights during each mode setting.
When no lamp is lit, this indicates real time
temperature displayed.

Select the “HEAT TEMP” mode and set by adjusting

“Heating time” in temperature control means time set
temperature is maintained, and sealing is performed
normally without excessive heating time (Even if
heating time is set to 0.0 sec.).
Setting heating time is effective only when the
packaging film (bag) is thick and sealing is not
achieved or, if achieved, the film is damaged even
though heating temperature is raised.

“NORMAL” is selected for a bag with a thickness of
0.1~ 0.2mm when shipped.
Sealing pressure necessary for sealing varies according
to material or thickness of the bag (film), therefore
adjust pressure corresponding to the bag (film) used.
After changing the material or thickness of the film, set
again.
After setting the control unit and adjusting the sealing
pressure, turn off the “START/STOP” button and
manually test the sealing a few times for the most
appropriate condition.

1 Air pedal operation
Set a bag on the sealing part and step on the air pedal.
The pressure lever lowers, and the sealing process
starts.
2 Table swtich-plate operation
Set a bag on the sealing part and push the specified
point (indication seal is applied), then the pressure lever
lowers and the sealing process starts.
3 Auto-cycle interval mode
The pressure lever repeatedly lowers at the set intervals.
Set a bag on the sealing part in synchronization with the
timing and seal it. If you turn OFF the “START/STOP”
button, the operation stops.
□ABORT CYCLE button
During each operation once the machine has started, if
you want to stop it for any reason, push the “ABORT
CYCLE” button. The pressure lever returns to the initial
state raised. The values set at “8-7 Seal parameter
VHWWLQJVRQWKHFRQWUROXQLW´ĺSDJH17) are not
cleared after pushing the “ABORT CYCLE” button.
Sealing is completed when the pressure lever rises after
the heating and cooling cycles have ended. If a smooth
seal is not achieved, perform the heating/cooling/
pressure settings over again.

Caution After using for a long period of time, the
sealing parts heats up. There is a danger
of being burned.
Be careful not to catch fingers, etc., in the
sealing parts forced with high pressure.
The machine is designed so that if foreign
objects are caught and the microswitch is
not turned on within 0.8 seconds, the
pressure will automatically release.
However, both end parts are highly
pressured and the heating process may be
carried out even with fingers caught
especially for OPL-450 and 600 series.
Use extreme caution.
