Thank you for purchasing the MS-451PV sealer.
Please read all of the safety and operating instructions before operating this machine. Periodic maintenance
and proper operation are necessary to ensure safety when using this impulse sealer. Keep this manual on
hand when operating the sealer.
MS-451PV controls the heating temperature by taking direct reading from the heating element through the
thin temperature sensor. Compared with the heating time control type, this makes the stable sealing condition
even after the prolonged use, reduces the unnecessary heating so that it saves the energy and the lives of
routine maintenance parts are extended.
As a result of research to further improve the MS-451PV series, some details in the operating instructions
may differ from your actual machine. For operating problems or product information, please contact your
local dealer.

Before using, always verify the voltage specification of your particular unit and operate it at the
correct voltages. Please note the following.
1 The voltage specification of your unit is listed on the label which displays the serial
number.
This label can be found on the machine body.
2 Please confirm the plug configuration on your specific unit.

Anti over-heating circuit device Power switch automatically turns off when the heating continues over

Pressure lever safety measure When the hands are caught between the seal levers, the pressure

1 The impulse sealer is a machine which sends strong electric current quickly to the thin ribbon heater,
which presses against the film and instantly heat seals the package.
Though this machine yields superior quality sealing, it is not compatible with films thicker than that
indicated in the diagram below, sponge-like sheets, and materials which are not able to withstand high
heat.
2 Film thickness limits for MS-451PV is described below. The machine cannot seal bags which are thicker
than that indicated. The machine may malfunction if you try to exceed the limits of machine.

Warning In an emergency, unplug the power cord immediately
MS-451PV incorporates a number of safety devices and is carefully
designed to prevent fires or other malfunctions.
However, should all of safety devices fail simultaneously, there is a
possibility of center-dry tape catching fire due to a failure of the heating
circuit's tripping mechanism that results in the heating element
overheating. Should smoke or fire appear from the center-dry tape,
immediately turn OFF the power.
Warning When replacing parts, unplug the power plug
Maintenance of the machine is important. Parts should be replaced in
accordance with the operating instructions. There is a risk of danger if
the parts are not replaced properly. Before replacing parts, unplug the
machine from the power source.
Warning Do not use for packaging liquids
Do not splash water on MS-451PV or use machine for packaging
liquids since machine is not waterproof.
There is a danger of electrocution or malfunction of the machine.
Warning Do not insert any metal objects into the sealing area
Please do not place any metal objects into the sealing area during
operation. This could cause electrocution.
Warning Do not modify the machine
Modification of MS-451PV or the use of unspecified parts may not
only lead to damage of the machine, but there is also a risk of danger to
the operator. Please do not temper with the machine. Accidents or
damage caused by modifications by the customer is the sole
responsibility of the customer.
Warning Confirm proper electric power source
Make sure power source has the specified voltage and electric power as
explained in the operating instructions. Do not use an extension cord, as
the machine may malfunction or may result in fire. Machine will
malfunction if connected to anything other than the specified voltage.
Insert the electric power plug fully into the wall outlet.
Warning Do not use parts other than those specified
When replacing parts, always use only specified parts sold through
Van der Stahl Scientific.We are not responsible for malfunctions
caused by the use of unspecified parts.
6 Operating Precautions
For Safety Operation

Caution Do not use in the following places
Do not operate machine in the following places since there is a danger
of malfunction
1 Dusty locations.
2 Locations not within normal temperatures.
3 Locations with highly humidity.
Caution Do not place hands in the sealing area
1 With prolonged use, the sealing area will retain heat and
become hot.
2 Do not place your fingers in the sealing area. There is a danger
of burns.
3 If fingers or foreign objects are caught in the lever and heating
doesn’t start within 0.5 seconds, the pressure is released and
lever returns to the first position.
Be careful not to be caught at both ends of the sealing lever .
The pressure is stronger especially at the both ends than the
center part of sealing lever. Heating process could possibly start
even while the fingers are caught.
Caution Use machine properly
Read this operating instructions carefully and correctly operate sealer.
Accidents or damage caused by the misuse of the machine, or against
the operating instructions are the sole responsibility of the customer.
Caution Place the machine at a proper location
Place the MS-451PV on a flat, horizontal surface and secure an
appropriate workbench. Also avoid near the heat source or the noise
generator. Please make sure to connect the earth wire without fail.
Heating temperature should be set at a minimum
Set the heating temperature at minimum of required to perform sealing.
If the temperature is raised excessively, the parts such as zone (center-
dry) tape and glass tape could possibly be damaged and result in
breaking the heating element. Excessive heating temperature also
decreases the work efficiency and wastes electricity.

Set the cooling temperature depending on the film
Cooling process is important when using an impulse sealer. After the
film is heated, the film must cool with the frame and pressure lever in
the closed position. Setting the cooling temperature excessively low
will decrease the work productivity. Set the cooling temperature that is
suitable for each film.
When the center-dry tape, silicone rubber becomes damaged
The zone (center-dry) tape, silicone rubber will start to wear with use.
Once they are damaged, it will be difficult to achieve smooth and
strong seals. Thoroughly read how to replace the parts and be careful
when doing so.
When temperature sensor is malfunctioning
Since the temperature sensor directly measures and controls the
temperature of heating element, disconnection of the sensor part to the
heating element could stop the entire machine operation.
Please make sure to set the temperature sensor properly especially after
replacing the parts around heating area.
Dust in the sealing area
Dust will prevent attainment of a smooth seal. It could also cause
damage to heating element and / or other routine maintenance parts.
Before using the machine, clean the sealing area.
MS-451PV is an impulse sealer
Do not become alarmed if the sealing area does not become hot after
the power switch is turned to the ON position. It is not because of the
machine malfunction.
MS-451PV uses an impulse method so the heating element will not
become hot just by plugging in the unit or turning the power switch to
the ON position. The heater will only become hot for an instant when
the heating process is in operation. However, after extended periods of
use, the sealing area may become hot.
Run test trials first before beginning operation
Achieving a superior seal with an impulse sealer is determined by
heating / cooling / pressure strength. Depending on the type of film and
the contents of the bag, heating / cooling / pressure strength conditions
may differ drastically. Find the optimum sealing conditions by
conducting seal test before proceeding.

Place the machine on a flat, horizontal surface and secure an
appropriate workbench.
The thin-film grip on the measurement-side is not
attached at the time of factory shipment. Insert the pin
to fix the grip as in the illustration on the right.
If the table is not necessary, you do not need to perform
this process.
1Slightly loosen the 6 x 10 white plastic screw at
the sealer front.
2Insert the L-shaped table corner into the gap
between the unit frame and the white plastic
screw.
3Tighten the white plastic screw at the proper
work position (height) to secure the table.
Insert the touch switch to the socket located on the right
side of the machine.
Use only as described in this manual.
There is a risk of danger and malfunctions may result if the machine is used not in accordance with this manual.

When the password is required:


The power cord is located on the left side of the
machine, when facing toward it. Make sure the
electrical outlet has adequate current carrying capacity
as described at ³6SHFLILFDWLRQV´ĺSDJH6).
Insert the electric power plug fully into the wall outlet.
The power switch is located on the left side of frame
when facing toward the machine. Turn ON the power
switch. The screen will turn ON.
1The right display will be shown on the screen.
2Press the numeric keys to input a six-digit
password.
3The corresponding ID to the inputted
password will be shown on the screen. Push
any key to start the sealer.

After setting all the conditions at the control unit, hold
the bag by both hands and stretch it tight. Set the bag
between seal levers and put the touch switch.
While sealing, the right display will be shown on the
screen.
The upper line shows the parameters set by the user.
The bottom line shows the actual heating/cooling
temperature as well as the seal pressure.
Also the seal counter is shown on the right upper side of
the screen in four digits.
Set the sealing condition such as heating temperature/
heating time/ cooling temperature and operation pattern
etc. with the control unit.
With the operation mode, the display will show the
current date and time as in the right illustration.

Please run test trials first before beginning operation.
Find the most suitable conditions (heating temperature
etc.) as you do test sealing.
After the heating and cooling cycle has finished, the
pressure lever returns to the initial position, and the
sealing is complete. If a sealing is not clean enough,
adjust the heating time or sealing pressure.
After finishing operation, always turn OFF the power
switch.
The set value is retained by the control unit; therefore,
there is no need to put the value every time after turning
OFF the power switch.
Unplug the power outlet in the case of not using the
machine for a while.
After use, please clean up the parts. Inspect parts such
as center-dry tape and heater to make sure that they are
not damaged. If the parts appear to be damaged,
replace them referring to operating instructions.

of burning increases. Do not put fingers
into the sealing area where a strong
pressure is applied. When the foreign
object is put between the pressure levers
or the microswitch does not turn on within
0.35 sec., the lever releases the pressure
automatically. However there is a
possibility that the heating process could
start while the foreign object is caught in
the sealing area since the strong pressure
is applied especially to the both sides of
the sealing lever.
