1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The ZEUSZ3-DME-02 Digital Media Encoder is a cost-optimized, compact 233 x 129 mm system that supports
H.264 High Profile encode and decode up to 1080p at 60 frames per second. This solution works in multiple
applications such as low-cost broadcast encoders, low-bandwidth video security, satellite uplink, remote
monitoring and industrial applications. The Z3-DME-02 provides immediate access to multi-format HD video,
integrated system peripherals and production-qualified codecs.
The Z3-DME-02 features HD performance, compact size, and low latency while still having less power
consumption than a PC-based encoder platform.

2.0 QUICK START GUIDE
2.1 If You Have Received a System from Z3 with the Software Preloaded
To start working with the encoder, you can go straight to Section 6.0, “GETTING STARTED WITH THE Z3-
DME-02,” on page 12. This section describes how to quickly generate a UDP or RTP stream to VLC, how to
change bitrate dynamically, how to adjust the UDP TS rate, and tuning for latency. Information on RTMP
mode and generating multiple streams from the same input can be found in Section 7.0, “STREAMING
RTMP IN THREE DIFFERENT RESOLUTIONS,” on page 27. Details on performing ASI encode can be found in
8.0, “ OUTPUTTING ASI,” on page 33. Details on running the Decoder can be found in Section 9.0, “
RUNNING THE DECODER”, on page 37.
2.2 If You Already have a System from Z3 and Need to Update the Firmware
You can update the firmware via the user interface by following the instructions in Section 10.3: “Making
a Firmware Update”, on page 39.

6.0 GETTING STARTED WITH THE Z3-DME-02
This section gives step-by-step instructions on using the Z3-DME-02 to stream 1080p or 1080i video to VLC
media player running on your PC. In addition to the Z3-DME-02, an HD source with SDI output (or HDMI
source with HDMI->SDI converter plus HDMI cable) and a PC with VLC are required as well as a BNC-BNC
cable, an Ethernet cable, and a 12V power supply.
*Note: Actual version numbers for your Z3 product may differ from those pictured in this document.
6.1 Set up the HD Source
(1) Set up the SDI source to output 1080p or 1080i.
If you do not have an SDI source, you can also use an HDMI source along with an HDMI->SDI
converter. It is important that the HDMI source have non-HDCP output (for example, in Z3’s
testing, the Brite-View BV-5005HD is used). To use an HDMI source, do the following:
-Power on the HDMI Source
-Connect an HDMI cable from the HDMI Source to a monitor
-Set the HDMI Source to 1080p30 or 1080i output (1080p60 requires a different mode –see below).
-Select and begin playback of the content
-Take the HDMI cable connected to the monitor and connect it to “HDMI In” of the HDMI to SDI
converter.
6.2 Connect and Power up the Z3-DME-02
(2) Connect the BNC cable from the SDI source to the Z3-DME-02 “SDI 1 Input” port.
(3) Connect an Ethernet cable to “Ethernet” on the back of the Z3-DME-02 to a switch, router or other
DHCP server on the same network as your Windows PC. You will use this PC to control the Z3-DME-
02 and to decode the output stream.

(4) Connect the 12V power supply to “+12VDC” and turn on the power switch. It will take 45-60 seconds
to boot. The “Ready” status LED will turn on.
6.3 Find the Z3-DME-02 on Your Network using ZFinder
ZFinder is a PC Utility that allows you to find any Z3 Technology product on your network. If you have
not downloaded this to your computer, you can find it on the USB drive provided with your system.
(5) Verify your Windows PC is is set to DHCP. If it is set to a static IP address, ZFinder will be unable to
discover your encoder, or it will appear in red and you will be unable to proceed further.
(6) Run the “ZFinder” PC Utility on your Windows PC. The ZFinder window appears. ZFinder completes a
scan of the network and lists the location of all Z3 systems that are connected. In this case, the Z3-
DME-02 appears.
(7) Click on the Z3-DME-02 entry in the window to select it. This will cause the “Edit Device”, “Open
Device” and “Flash LEDs” boxes to activate:

(1) Turn on PWR
(2) “Ready” lights up after around 1 minute

*Note:Selecting “Edit Device” allows for manual changes to network settings. Selecting “Flash
LED’s” is useful when multiple encoders are connected to the same network.
*Note: If the Z3-DME-02 is highlighted in red in ZFinder, this means that the Z3-DME-02 is
currently not accessible from the network. The netmask / IP address of the Z3-DME-02 should be
adjusted using “Edit Device” to conform to the value needed by the network (the netmask should
be the same as the network’s and the IP address should have either the first two or three values
be the same [depending on whether the netmask is 255.255.0.0, or 255.255.255.0]).
(8) Click on “Open Device.” An Internet browser window is opened (for best results, Firefox or Chrome
are recommended) and HTTP-based graphical user interface (GUI) appears at the System Setup tab.
6.4 Configure CH1 and Encode
(9) Click on the “CH1” tab.
(10) In the Channel 1 configuration tab, change Video Resolution to “1920x1080”.
(11) Set Output Format to “UDP,”
(12) You can set the Dest Address to:
(a) the IP address of your PC that will be running the VLC media player(in the pictured
example, 192.168.0.6).
(b) or to a multicast address (An example multicast address would be “225.1.2.3”. If you are
on a shared network, check with your Network Administrator.)

(13) Make note of the value of “Dest Port” (This will be 5004 by default).
(14) The encoder may have already started (after 20 seconds, the encoder will automatically try to
start). If it has, click on “stop” near the bottom of the screen. Then, click on “start”. Once you do
this, the status will change to “RUNNING.”
*Note: If you want to encode 1080p60, you must first change “Operating Mode” at the bottom right
from “Encode Interlaced/Progressive” to “Encode Single Ch No Scale.” Note that, in “Encode Single
Ch No Scale” mode, only CH1 can be used.

6.5 Run VLC to View Stream
(15) Run VLC on your PC (version used in testing at Z3: 2.1.5)
(16) Select Media –Open Network Stream. In the box, type “udp://@192.168.0.6:5004”, where
“192.168.0.6” matches the values of the computer IP address or multicast address entered for
“Dest Address” previously, and 5004 is the value of “Dest Port” noted previously.
(17) Press “Enter.”
(18) You will now see video streaming to VLC.

6.6 Streaming RTP
Once you have UDP streaming, it is relatively simple to change to RTP streaming. All that is needed are a
few parameter changes. To stream using RTP, complete the following steps:
(19) In the CH1 configuration tab, click on “stop” to stop the current encoding session.
(20) Change “Output Format” from “UDP” to “RTP.”
(21) Click on “start” to start the RTP encoding session. At this point your settings should look like the
following:
(22) Open VLC. Select “Media – Open Network Stream”.

(23) In the “Open Media” box, type “rtsp://{IP Address}/z3-{ch#}{m}.mp4”, where {IP Address} is the IP
address of the Z3-DME-02, {ch #} is 1 for CH1, 2 for CH2, and 3 for CH3, and {m} is added if a
multicast address is being streamed. For example, if the IP address of the Z3-DME-02 is the value of
192.168.81.7, encode is being done from CH1, and unicast streaming is being done, the user would
type in “rtsp://192.168.81.7/z3-1.mp4”:
*Note: VLC version 2.1.5 or later is needed for RTSP support.
(24) Click “Play.” You will then see RTP video streaming on VLC.

6.7 Changing the Bitrate and Frame Rate Dynamically
The Z3-DME-02 includes an “update” button which allows you to change the bitrate or frame rate
without stopping and restarting the encoder. To use it, complete the following steps:
(25) In VLC, click on “Tools” and select “Codec Information”. This brings up a window with four tabs.
Select the “Statistics” tab. In this tab, you can see the current video + audio bitrate:
(26) In the CH1 tab, change the bitrate from “8000K” to “2000K” and click “update”
*Note: If FireFox is used, after entering a value in a text box, it is necessary to click once outside of that
text box for the value to be accepted. The end result is “update” has to be clicked twice after changing
the bit rate.

(27) You should see the video bitrate drop and the quality of the picture in VLC change.
If you click on the status page and click “Refresh,” you will also see the updated bitrate reflected:
You can also use the “update” button to modify the Frame Rate Divider.
