1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
1.1 Preface
The Z3-DME-02 Digital Media Encoder is a cost-optimized, compact 233mm x 129mm system that
supports H.264 High Profile encode up to 1080p at 60 frames per second. This solution works in multiple
applications such as low-cost broadcast encoders, low-bandwidth video security, satellite uplink, remote
monitoring and industrial applications. The Z3-DME-02 provides immediate access to multi-format HD
video, integrated system peripherals and production-qualified codecs.
The Z3-DME-02 offers multi-format, multi-channel HD video up to 1080p60. The Z3-DME-02 features HD
performance, compact size, and low latency while still having less power consumption than a PC-based
encoder platform.

3.0 FEATURES

5.0 GETTING STARTED AND RUNNING THE Z3-DME-02
For these steps, you will need: a computer, an SDI source (or HDMI source with HDMI->SDI converter plus
HDMI cable), a BNC-BNC cable, an Ethernet cable, and a Z3-DME-02 with 12V power supply.
5.1 Setting up the Video Source
(1) Set up the SDI source to output 1080p or 1080i output.
If you do not have an SDI source, you can also use an HDMI source with non-DHCP output (for
example, in Z3’s testing, the Brite-View BV-5005HD is used). If you go this route, do the following:
-Power on the HD Source
-Connect an HDMI cable from the HD Source to a monitor
-Set the HD Source to 1080p30 or 1080i output
-Select and begin playback of the content
-Take the HDMI cable connected to the monitor and connect it to “HDMI In” of the HDMI->SDI
converter box.
(2) Connect the BNC cable from the SDI source to the Z3-DME-02 “SDI1 Input” port (see Figure 4)
5.2 Connecting and powering up the Z3-DME-02
(3) Connect an Ethernet cable to “Ethernet” on the Z3-DME-02 (see Figure 4). Connect the other end of
the Ethernet cable directly to a PC. You will use this PC to control the Z3-DME-02 and to decode the
output stream.
(4) Connect the 12V power supply to “+12VDC” (see Figure 4)
(5) Power on the Z3-DME-02:
(6) Wait around 1 minute for the “status” LED to light up

5.3 Finding the Z3-DME-02 on the Network using ZFinder
(7) Make sure you Windows PC is connected to the same network which the Z3-DME-02 is connected to.
(8) Run the “ZFinder” PC Utility on your Windows PC. The ZFinder window appears. Zfinder does a scan
of the network and lists the location of all Z3 systems connected to the network. In this case, the
Z3-DME-02 appears:
(9) Click on the Z3-DME-02 entry in the window to select it. This will cause the “Edit Device”, “Open
Device” and “Flash LEDs” boxes to activate:

(10) Click on “Open Device.” An internet browser window is opened (default browser used is Firefox) and
the Web GUI appears:

(11) Now that you have reached the GUI, you are ready to modify the settings for the encode that you
want to do. Make sure “Video Source” is “HD-SDI.” Change “Output Format” to “UDP”, and set
“Dest IP Address” to your PC’s address (192.168.0.6 in this example), and set “Dest Port” to 5004:

(12) The encoder may have already started (after 20 seconds, the encoder will automatically try to
start). If it has, click on “stop” near the bottom of the screen. The status should then change to
“STOPPED.” Then click “start.” Once you do this, the status will change to “RUNNING.” If the
encoder hadn’t started already, simply click on “start” and observe the status change:

5.4 Opening a VLC Client to Receive the Encoded Stream
(13) Run VLC on your PC (version used in testing at Z3: 2.08. Any version after 1.1 should be ok)
(14) Select Media –Open Network Stream. In the box, type “udp://@192.168.0.6:5.004,” where
“192.168.0.6” is the PC IP address and “5004” is the port that you set up in step (11):
(15) Press “Enter.”
(16) You should now see video streaming from VLC.

5.5 Streaming RTP
Once you have UDP streaming running, it is relatively simple to change to RTP streaming. All that is
needed is a change of settings and an SDP file (an example file is provided with the software release
from Z3). To stream using RTP, complete the following steps:
(17) Click on “stop” to stop the current encoding session.
(18) Change “Output Format” to “RTP.”
(19) Confirm that “Dest Port” is still 5004 (this will be important in VLC configuration).
(20) Click “start” to start the encoding session.
(21) Copy the “z3-dm8107.sdp” file received from Z3 to your PC
(22) Open VLC. Select “Media – Open File” and select the “z3-dm8107.sdp” file you just copied.
(23) You should then see RTP video streaming on VLC:

5.6 Using “update” to change the bitrate dynamically
The Z3-DME-02 includes an “update” button which allows the user to change the bitrate without
stopping and restarting the encoder. To use this feature, complete the following steps:
(24) In VLC, click on “tools” and select “Codec Information.” This brings up a window with 4 tabs. Select
the “Statistics” tab. In this tab, you can see the current video+audio bitrate:
(25) In the CH1 tab of the Web GUI, change the bitrate from “8000K” to “2000K” and click the “update”
button:

(26) You should see the quality of the picture in VLC change. You should also observe the video bitrate
drop:
5.7 Adjusting the UDP TS Rate
The DME-02 includes a parameter to adjust the TS rate independent of the video bitrate. This can be
found just below “PCR PID” when “UDP” is selected as the output format.
Normally, this value is set to 25% to 33% above the sum of the video and audio bitrate. For example, the
default value out of the factory is a value of 10Mbps, corresponding to 8Mbps for the video.
There are times, however, when it is desirable to make this value higher. For example, if the encoder
bitrate is very low (below 1Mbps), it is advisable to allow more leeway in the event there are some
challenging scenes to encode. The steps below show an example where this might be desirable and
what specifically you can do to change this and verify that the change was successful.

(27) Go back to the “CH1” tab. In this tab, click “stop.” Then change “Video Resolution” to “720x480,”
“Video Bit Rate” to “512K” and Output Format to “USDP (Steps 1-4 in the Figure below):
(28) Once you select UDP, “TS RATE” should appear with the default value of 8000K. Change this to
1000K.
(29) Click “start” to begin encoding.

(30) Open VLC to view your UDP stream (see ) and view the “Statistics” tab (see ). You will see a lower
value for the overall input rate and for the “content” rate:
The value of TS Rate must be higher than (video bit rate + audio bit rate) * 1.25. If an attempt is
made to input a value less than this, the error message “TS rate too small to carry elementary
streams” will appear.
5.8 Tuning for Latency
For latency, the key parameters to work with are Maximum Delay and Number of B-frames.
Maximum Delay defines the number of milliseconds of buffering the encoder has to work with. The
higher this value, the more buffers it has to work with and the more time it has to “smooth things out”
for challenging content. However, a higher value also causes latency to increase accordingly. To
minimize latency, this value should be set to the lowest possible value. The lowest value Z3
recommends is 100.
B-frames improve the quality of the picture, but they also increase the latency by 1 frame time. To
minimize latency, B-frames should be disabled (done by setting “Number of B-frames” to 1).
Figure 19 shows the suggested values for Maximum Delay and Number of B-frames for 3 common use
cases:

5.9 Running DHCP
DHCP is also supported. When enabled, the Z3-DME-02 dynamically receives an IP address to use at
startup. The IP address that is assigned can be seen through the ZFinder tool running on a PC. To see
how DHCP support works, you can do the following steps:
(31) The first thing you need to do is set up a custom configuration so that the DHCP setting is used the
next time the system boots up. To do this, click on the “User Presets” tab and click on “new”:
(32) This brings up a new text box to enter the preset name. Type “z3_test” and click “ok”:
