2 Description
2.1 Product overview
Thisvariant ofthe Dräger PASColt Series provides respiratory protection for working
in a contaminated environment using an airline (supplied airline respirator – SAR),
or escaping from a contaminated environment using the air cylinder (self-contained
breathingapparatus–SCBA).
During airline use, the PAS Colt is connected to a breathing-quality independent air
supply and the cylinder valve is closed. If the independent air supply falls below the
requiredpressure,theweareropensthecylindervalve,disconnectstheindependentair
supplyandthenescapestoasafeareabreathingairfromthecylinder.Thetimeavailable
fortheescapeisdependentonthecapacity(volume)ofthecylinderandthebreathing
rateofthewearer.
Thefeaturesoftheequipmentare:
● Thecarryingsystemisabandoliershoulderharnessandwaistbelt.
● Thelungdemandregulator(LDR)hasaresetbutton(Fig1,Item1)thatswitches
offtheairowthroughtheregulator,andapurgebutton(Fig1,Item2)thatcanbe
usedtodeliveranadditionalairowintothefacemaskwhenrequiredbythewearer
duringairlineuse.Theholder(Fig2,Item1)providesastowagepointtoprotectthe
regulatorcouplingandO-ringagainstdamagewhenitisnotttedinthefacemask.
● Therst-stageregulator(Fig2,Item2)hasananti-vibrationstrapttedthatisused
topreventlooseningoftheconnectorhandwheel.
● Theairlineconnector(Fig2,Item3)isamalecouplingthatisusedtoconnectan
independentairsupplyforsuppliedairlinerespirator(SAR)use.
● Alow-pressurewhistleisttedonsomevariantsofthisproduct(seeSection2.1.1).
● Thehip-mountedcylinderholsterhasadropdownfacilitythatcanassistwearer

2.1.1 Low-pressure whistle (optional)
IfthePASColtisttedwithalow-pressurewhistle,itoperatesasfollows:
● Duringairlineuse,thewhistlesoundstowarnthewearerthattheindependentair
supplyhasfallenbelowtherequiredpressure.

During an escape (when the wearer is breathing from the air cylinder), the
whistlesoundswhenthecylinderpressureisverylow.Thisisnotanend-of-
service-timeindicator(EOSTI).

2.2 Intended use
Whenthisproductisusedwithanapprovedfacemask,aircylinderandindependent
air supply, it provides the wearer with respiratory protection for working in, or
escapingfrom,contaminatedoroxygen-decientconditions.Itisintendedforusein
applicationswhereahighlevelofrespiratoryprotectionisrequired,includingIDLH
(immediatelydangeroustolifeandhealth)atmospheres.
The air cylinder, face mask and other accessories used with this product must be
certiedDrägercomponents,assembledinanapprovedconguration;otherwisethe
operationofthedevicemaybeimpaired.Itisessentialthatushingandnon-ushing
facemasksandlungdemandregulatorsshouldnotbemixed(i.e.onlyaushing-
typefacemaskshouldbeusedwithaushing-typelungdemandregulator).Contact
Drägerforfurtherinformation.
2.3 Limitations on use
ThisproductisnotapprovedforuseinCBRNapplications.
2.4 Approvals
The PAS Colt Series of combination escape/airline respiratory protection equipment
conformstotherequirementsofNIOSH.Thisproductisapprovedforuseasasupplied
airlinerespirator(SAR)andasaself-containedescaperespirator,andmustonlybeused
inconjunctionwithcompressed-aircylindersapprovedbyNIOSH.
3 Use

WARNING
Thetimerequiredtoallowthewearertoescapetoasafeareamustbewithin
thecapacity(volume)ofthecylinderselected,takingintoaccountthebreathing
rateofthewearer.Whenselectingthetypeanddurationofescapeequipment
itisessentialtoconsiderthepotentialhazardsandprobableescaperoutes.
Thecylinderandairlineairqualityshallmeettherequirementsforbreathingair
accordingtoCGAG-7.1GradeDorhigherquality.
Beforeusingairlineequipment,ensurethattheindependentairsupplymeets
theairqualityrequirementsandcomplieswithpressure,owandhoselength
requirementsinthetechnicaldata(seeSection9),andhasbeenissuedwitha
permitforuseifnecessary.
IfusingaPASColtwithoutanintegrallow-pressurewhistle,Drägerrecommend
thatalow-pressurewarningdeviceisttedtotheindependentairsupply.

3.1 Preparation for use
3.1.1 Visual inspection
Carry out a visual inspection, checking the full breathing apparatus including all
componentpartsandaccessories.Checkthattheequipmentiscleanandundamaged,
paying particular attention to pneumatic components, hoses and connectors. Typical
signsofdamagethatmayaffecttheoperationofthebreathingapparatusincludeimpact,
abrasion,cutting,corrosionanddiscoloration.Reportdamagetoservicepersonneland
donotusetheapparatusuntilfaultsarerectied.
3.1.2 Fitting the cylinder
1. Ensurethatthe cylinder isfully charged, withthe pointer ofthecylinder pressure
indicatorinsidethegreenarea.
2. Check that the threads of the valve port and the regulator handwheel are
undamaged,andtheO-ringisinpositionandundamaged.
3. Fullyinsertthecylinderintothecarryingholster.
CAUTION
Topreventdamage,ensurethatthecylinderremainsclearofthehandwheelof
therst-stageregulatorwhileinsertingthecylinder.
4. Alignthecylinderwiththeregulatorandtightenthehandwheelhandtight(Fig3).
5. Pulltheanti-vibrationstrapoverthetopofthecylindervalve(Fig4).
3.1.3 Functional testing

WARNING
If breathing apparatus fails to meet any of the standards or parameters
describedinthefunctionaltests,orifanimmediateleakisevident,thereisa
systemfault.ReportthefaulttotrainedservicepersonnelorcontactDräger.Do
notusethebreathingapparatusuntilthefaultconditionisrectied.
Leak test
1. Ensurethatthepointerofthecylinderpressureindicatorisinsidethegreenarea.
2. Presstheresetbutton(Fig1Item1)ofthelungdemandregulatortoswitchoffthe
positivepressure.
3. Openthecylindervalveslowly,butfully,topressurizethesystemandthenclosethe
valve.Thereshouldbenoaudibleleak.Ifthereisanyleak,investigateandrepair
theleakbeforeuse.Ifnecessary,useasoapysolutiontolocatetheleak.
4. Pressthepurgebutton(Fig1,Item2)toventthesystem.
Airlineowtest(onlyrequiredforairlineuse)
1. Presstheresetbutton(Fig1,Item1)ofthelungdemandregulator,andthencheck
thatthecylindervalveisclosed.
2. Connect the independent air supply to the male coupling (Fig 2, Item 3). If the
independentairsupplyhasashut-offvalve,openthevalve.

WARNING
Donotdirecttheairowontotheface,eyesorskin.
3. Pressthepurgebutton(Fig1,Item2)for3to5seconds.Anunobstructedairow
shouldowfromtheoutletofthelungdemandregulator.
4. Isolateanddisconnecttheindependentairsupply.
5. Pressthepurgebutton(Fig1,Item2)toventthesystemandthenpressthereset
button(Fig1,Item1)toswitchoffthepositivepressure.
3.1.4 Putting on the PAS Colt (ready position)
ReferalsotoFig2whichshowsthePASColtworninthereadyposition.
1. Ensurethatthepointerofthecylinderpressureindicatorisinsidethegreenarea.
2. Openthewaistbeltbuckleandfullyextendthewaistandshoulderstrap.
3. Placetheleftarmthroughtheshoulderharness,takingtheharnessoverthehead
andontotherightshoulder,positioningthestrapdiagonallyacrossthebodywiththe
cylinderpositionedagainstthelefthip.
4. Loopthewaistbeltaroundthewaistandfastenthebuckle–donottighten.
5. Gripthecylindervalvewiththelefthandandliftuntilthewaistbeltisinlinewiththe
waist.Thentightenthewaistbeltstrapuntiltheequipmentissecureandcomfortable
onthewaist.Pulldowntoadjusttheshoulderstrap.
6. InspectthefacemaskasdenedintherelevantInstructionsforUse.
7. CheckthatthefacemaskportandtheregulatorO-ringarecleanandundamaged.
8. Removethelungdemandregulatorfromtheholderandpressitintotheportofthe
facemaskuntilitlatchesinposition.Checktheattachmentbygentlyattemptingto
pullthecouplingapart.
9. Puttheneckstrapofthefacemaskoverthehead,andtheninserttheneckstrap
studintotheholeinthecentrestrapoftheheadharness.
3.2 During use
ThisvariantofthePASColtSeriescanbeusedforcombination(escape/airline)useor
purelyforescapeuse.Forcombinationusethefacemaskiswornduringthetask;and
forescapeusethePASColtisworninthereadypositionuntilanescapeisnecessary.

3.2.1 Combination (escape/airline) use
Putting on the face mask
1. Presstheresetbutton(Fig1,Item1)ofthelungdemandregulatortoswitchoffthe
positivepressure.
2. Connect the independent air supply to the male coupling (Fig 2, Item 3). If the
independentairsupplyhasashut-offvalve,openthevalve.

Correcttofthefacemaskcanonly be achievedifthecompletefacemask
sealmakescontactwithskin.Headhair,facialhair(includingbeardstubbleand
sideburns),earrings,otherfacialpiercingsandnormalspectacleswillinterfere
withthefacemasksealandarenotpermittedinthesealingarea.Additionally,
headhairthatcouldaffectthefacemaskt(buns,pony-tails,hairpieces,etc.)
isnotpermitted.

3. Detachtheneckstrapstudfromthecenterstrapoftheheadharness.
4. Spreadtheheadharness(Fig5).Placethechinintothechincupofthefacemask
andpulltheharnessovertheheadlocatingtheharnesscenterplateonbackofthe
head.
5. ReferringtoFig6,tightenbothlower(1)andthenupperstraps(2)evenlytowards
back of the head. If necessary, tighten the center strap (3). The wearer’s rst
inhalationafterachievingafacesealwillautomaticallyswitchontheairsupplyinto
thefacemask.
6. Check that the head has a full range of movement without pulling against the
regulator hose. If any resistance to movement is felt, readjust the hose routing
andthenrecheck.Ifresistanceisstillfelt,do notusethebreathingapparatusand
contactDräger.
Function check
1. Isolate the independent air supply (close the valve or disconnect) and breathe
normallytoemptythesystemofair.Whenempty,thefacemaskshouldholdonto
thefacetoindicateapositiveseal.
2. Immediatelyreapplytheindependentairsupplyandbreathenormally.
3. Inhaleandholdyourbreath–thereshouldbenoaudibleleak.Ifaleakisdetected,
readjusttheheadharnessandretest.
4. Recommencebreathing–exhaledairshouldoweasilyoutoftheexhalationvalve.
5. Momentarilypressthepurgebutton(Fig1,Item2)tocheckforadditionalairow.
When the function check has been satisfactorily completed, breathe normally and
proceedtotheworkingarea.
Escape procedure (independent air supply failure)

WARNING
Duringsuppliedairlinerespirator(SAR)use,thePASColtcylindervalvemust
remainclosed.Theescapedurationstartsfromthetimeofopeningthecylinder
valveanddisconnectingtheairlinesupply.
Drägerstronglyadvisethatthepurgebutton(Fig1,Item2)isnotusedduring
anescape.Usingthepurgebuttonwoulduseairfromthecylinderandreduce
thetimeavailableforescape.

NOTICE
IfthePASColtisttedwithalow-pressurewhistle,duringairlineusethewhistle
soundstoindicatethattheindependentairsupplyhasfallenbelowtherequired
pressure.Ifthewhistlesoundsandthenstopsbeforetheescapeprocedureis
started,theairsupplypressurecouldhavebeenrestored.The wearer must
conrm that the correct pressure (87 to 125 psi) is available, or escape as
describedbelow.
Iftheindependentairsupplyfails,breathenormallyandimmediatelyproceedasfollows:
1. Openthecylindervalve(counterclockwise)slowly,butfully,andcontinuetobreathe
normally.
2. DisconnecttheindependentairsupplyfromthePASColt.
3. Immediatelyleavethehazardousareabytheshortestandsafestescaperoute.
Thewearermustbeinasafeareabeforetheaircylinderisempty.Wheninasafearea,
remove the lung demand regulator from the face mask if necessary and continue to
breathenormally.

wouldsoundwhenthecylinderpressurewasintherange72.5to58psi.This
