1.1 General safety statements

2 Description
2.1 Product overview
ThisvariantoftheDrägerPASColtSeriesprovidesrespiratoryprotection
for escaping from a contaminated environment using breathing air from
theaircylinder(self-containedbreathingapparatus–SCBA).
Thefeaturesoftheequipmentare:
● Thecarryingsystemisabandoliershoulderharnessandwaistbelt.
● Thelungdemandregulator(LDR)hasaresetbutton(Fig1,Item1)
thatswitchesofftheairowthroughtheregulator,andapurgebutton
(Fig 1, Item 2) that can be used vent the pneumatic system. The
holder(Fig2,Item1)providesastowagepointtoprotecttheregulator
couplingandO-ringagainst damagewhenitisnottted intheface
mask.
● The rst-stage regulator (Fig 2, Item 2) has an anti-vibration strap
ttedthatisusetopreventlooseningoftheconnectorhandwheel.
● The hip-mounted cylinder holster has a dropdown facility that can
assist wearer movement by making the cylinder and holster more
manoeuvrable(inaconnedspaceforexample).
● The remaining pressure in the air cylinder is shown on a contents
indicatoronthecylinder.
● Athighstrapisavailableasanaccessory.
2.2 Intended use
Whenthisproductisusedwithanapprovedfacemaskandaircylinder,
it provides the wearer with respiratory protection for escaping from
contaminated or oxygen-decient conditions. It is intended for use in
applications where a high level of respiratory protection is required,
includingIDLH(immediatelydangeroustolifeandhealth)atmospheres.
Theaircylinder,facemaskandotheraccessoriesusedwiththisproduct
must be certied Dräger components, assembled in an approved
conguration;otherwisetheoperationofthedevicemay be impaired. It
isessentialthatushingandnon-ushingfacemasksandlungdemand
regulatorsshouldnotbemixed(i.e.onlyaushing-typefacemaskshould
beusedwithaushing-typelungdemandregulator).ContactDrägerfor
furtherinformation.
2.3 Limitations on use
ThisproductisnotapprovedforuseinCBRNapplications.
2.4 Approvals
ThePASColtSeriesofescaperespiratoryprotectionequipmentconforms
totherequirementsofNIOSH.Thisproductisapprovedforuseasaself-
containedescape respirator, and must onlybe used in conjunction with
compressed-aircylindersapprovedbyNIOSH.
3 Use

WARNING
Thetimerequiredtoallowthewearertoescapetoasafeareamust
bewithinthecapacity(volume)ofthecylinderselected,takinginto
accountthebreathingrateofthewearer.Whenselectingthetype
and duration of escape equipment it is essential to consider the
potentialhazardsandprobableescaperoutes.
Thecylinderairqualityshallmeettherequirementsforbreathingair
accordingtoCGAG-7.1GradeDorhigherquality.

3.1 Preparation for use
3.1.1 Visual inspection
Carryoutavisualinspection,checkingthefullbreathingapparatusincluding
allcomponentpartsandaccessories.Checkthattheequipmentiscleanand
undamaged, paying particular attention to pneumatic components, hoses
andconnectors.Typicalsignsofdamagethatmay affecttheoperationof
the breathing apparatus include impact, abrasion, cutting, corrosion and
discoloration. Report damage to service personnel and do not use the
apparatusuntilfaultsarerectied.
3.1.2 Fitting the cylinder
1. Ensurethatthecylinderisfullycharged,withthepointerofthecylinder
pressureindicatorinsidethegreenarea.
2. Checkthatthethreadsofthevalveportandtheregulatorhandwheel
areundamaged,andtheO-ringisinpositionandundamaged.
3. Fullyinsertthecylinderintothecarryingholster.
CAUTION
To prevent damage,ensurethatthecylinderremainsclearofthe
handwheeloftherst-stageregulatorwhileinsertingthecylinder.
4. Align the cylinder with the regulator and tighten the handwheel hand
tight(Fig3).
5. Pulltheanti-vibrationstrapoverthetopofthecylindervalve(Fig4).
3.1.3 Functional testing

WARNING
If the breathing apparatus fails to meet any of the standards or
parametersdescribedinthefunctionaltests,orifan immediate leak
isevident,thereisasystemfault.Reportthefaulttotrainedservice
personnelorcontactDräger.Donotusethebreathingapparatusuntil
thefaultconditionisrectied.
Leak test
1. Ensurethatthepointerofthecylinderpressureindicatorisinsidethe
greenarea.
2. Presstheresetbutton(Fig1,Item1)ofthelungdemandregulatorto
switchoffthepositivepressure.
3. Openthecylindervalveslowly,butfully,topressurizethesystemand
thenclosethevalve.Thereshouldbenoaudibleleak.Ifthereisany
leak,investigateandrepairtheleakbefore use. Ifnecessary,usea
soapysolutiontolocatetheleak.
4. Pressthepurgebutton(Fig1,Item2)toventthesystem.
5. Presstheresetbutton(Fig1,Item1)toswitchoffthepositivepressure.
3.1.4 Putting on the PAS Colt (ready position)
ReferalsotoFig2whichshowsthePASColtworninthereadyposition.
1. Ensure that the pointer of the cylinder pressure indicator is inside the
greenarea.
2. Openthewaistbeltbuckleandfullyextendthewaistandshoulderstrap.
3. Placetheleftarmthroughtheshoulderharness,takingtheharnessover
the head and on to the right shoulder, positioning the strap diagonally
acrossthebodywiththecylinderpositionedagainstthelefthip.
4. Loop the waist belt around the waist and fasten the buckle – do not
tighten.
5. Gripthecylindervalvewiththelefthandandliftuntilthewaistbeltisin
linewiththewaist.Thentightenthewaistbeltstrapuntiltheequipment
issecureandcomfortableonthewaist.Pulldowntoadjusttheshoulder
strap.
6. InspectthefacemaskasdenedintherelevantInstructionsforUse.
7. Check that the face mask port and the regulator O-ring are clean and
undamaged.
8. Removethelungdemandregulatorfromtheholderandpressitintothe
portofthefacemaskuntilitlatchesinposition.Checktheattachmentby
gentlyattemptingtopullthecouplingapart.
9. Puttheneckstrapofthefacemaskoverthehead,andtheninsertthe
neckstrapstudintotheholeinthecentrestrapoftheheadharness.
3.2 During use
3.2.1 Putting on the face mask and escape procedure

WARNING
Correcttofthefacemaskcanonlybeachievedifthecomplete
face mask seal makes contact with skin. Head hair, facial hair
(including beard stubble and sideburns), earrings, other facial
piercingsandnormalspectacleswillinterferewiththefacemask
sealandarenotpermittedinthesealingarea.Additionally,head
hairthatcouldaffectthefacemaskt(buns,pony-tails,hairpieces,
etc.)isnotpermitted.

1. Presstheresetbutton(Fig1,Item1)ofthelungdemandregulatorto
switchoffthepositivepressure.
2. Open the cylinder valve (counterclockwise) slowly, but fully, to
pressurizethesystem.

NOTICE
After storage at temperatures below 32 °F (0 °C) leakage may
beobservedwhenthecylindervalveisinitiallyopenedduetoice
formation.
● If leakage is observed from the lung demand regulator:
Pressthepurgebutton(Fig1,Item2) to allow arushofair
topassthrough thelungdemandregulator andthenquickly
presstheresetbutton(Fig1,Item1)toswitchoffthepositive
pressure.Resumenormaloperation.
● In the event that leakage still occurs, remove the breathing
apparatusfromserviceandreportthefaulttotrainedservice
personnelorcontactDräger.
3. Detachtheneckstrapstudfromthecenterstrapoftheheadharness.
4. Spreadtheheadharness(Fig5).Placethechinintothechincupof
thefacemaskandpulltheharnessovertheheadlocatingtheharness
centerplateonbackofthehead.
5. Referring to Fig 6, tighten both lower (1) and then upper straps (2)
evenly towards back of the head. If necessary, tighten the center
strap(3).Thewearer’srstinhalationafterachievingafacesealwill
automaticallyswitchontheairsupplyintothefacemask.

WARNING
Thedurationofthecylinderairbeginsfromthetimeoftherst-
breathactivationofthelungdemandregulator.
Drägerstronglyadviseagainstusingthepurgebutton(Fig1,Item2)
during an escape. Using the purge button would use air from the
cylinderandreducethetimeavailableforescape.
6. Immediately leave the hazardous area by the shortest and safest
escaperoute.
Thewearermustbeinasafeareabeforetheaircylinderisempty.When
inasafearea,removethelungdemandregulatorfromthefacemaskif
necessaryandcontinuetobreathenormally.
3.2.2 Dropdown cylinder holster
● Toreleasethedropdowncylinderholster:
a. Holdthecylindervalvewiththelefthandand,withtherighthand,
press and hold the red button to open the locking mechanism
(Fig7).
b. Liftthecylinderandholsterclearofthelockingmechanismand
thenreleasetheredbutton(Fig8).
c. Lower the cylinder until it is supported by the harness straps
(Fig9).Theholsterisheldbytwoharnessstraps,onexedand
oneadjustable.
d. Hold the cylinder valve to move the cylinder and holster as
required.
● Toreconnectthedropdowncylinderholster,alignandpresstheroller
ontheholsterintothelockingmechanism.
3.3 After use

WARNING
Donotremovetheequipmentuntilinsafearea,clearofhazard.
CAUTION
Donotdroporthrowdownequipmentasdamagecouldoccur.
1. Loosenthefacemaskstraps.Asthesealbetweenthefacemaskand
thefaceisbroken,presstheresetbutton(Fig1,Item1)toswitchoff
thepositivepressure.
2. Removethefacemaskandfullyextendallofthestrapsofthehead
harness.
3. Closethecylindervalve.
4. Pressthepurgebutton(Fig1,Item2)tofullyventthesystem.
5. Removethelungdemandregulatorfromthefacemaskandstowitin
theholder(Fig2,Item1).
6. Unbuckle the waist belt, lift the shoulder strap buckle to loosen the
harnessandthenremovetheequipment.
7. Carryouttheafteruse maintenancetasksinthemaintenancetable
(seeSection5.1).
