Designated use
The hand control unit type CPX−MMI−1, called the handheld in
the following, has been designed for commissioning and diag
nosing Festo products. With the handheld, device states and
faults can be visualized and, if necessary, settings for com
missioning and fault finding can be undertaken.
The handheld is a universal control panel. It has been de
signed for use with several Festo products.
Further information on using the handheld as well as on des
ignated use in conjunction with the product can be found in
the manual for the relevant product.
It is absolutely necessary to observe the safety instructions in
the manual as well as the designated use in conjunction with
the relevant product. The handheld type CPX−MMI−1 together
with accessories must only be used as follows:
 only for industrial usage
inaccordance with designated use
 without any modifications by the user
infaultless technical condition.
Observe also the standards specified in the relevant chapters,
as well as national and local laws and technical regulations.

Safety instructions
In order to use the handheld, you must have detailed knowl
edge of the functions and features of the connected device
and of the relevant machine/system. During commissioning,
the safety instructions listed in this manual as well as in the
documentation for the relevant product must be observed at
all times.
The user must ensure that nobody has access to the position
ing range of the connected actuators. The danger area must
be made inaccessible by means of suitable measures such as
protective screening and warning signs.
When write access for the handheld is enabled, dangerous
movements may be triggered as a result of the modification
of signal states (see also section 4.2.3).
Please note
Activate the password protection in order to prevent the
write access from being enabled unintentionally by un
authorized third parties (see section 4.2.4).
Warning
Modification to the signal states and parameters with the
handheld can trigger dangerous movements of the con
nected actuators.
·Make sure that nobody is in the positioning range of the
connected actuators and be very careful with the
parametrizing and the manipulation of signal states.
Caution
If you enable write access for the handheld after a System
Start without existing field bus connection, the Fail−safe
status (field bus communication fault) will become active.
·Note that all outputs will then assume the signal status
defined by Fail safe (pre−setting: reset all outputs).

Target group
This manual is directed exclusively at personnel trained in
commissioning and servicing, who have detailed knowledge
of the functions and characteristics of the connected device
and of the relevant machine/system.

Term/abbreviation Meaning
0−signal Input or output supplies 0 V
1−signal Input or output supplies 24 V
Arrow buttons The 4 arrow buttons are situated directly under the function buttons and
are marked with an arrow.
CP Compact Performance
CPX bus Data bus via which the CPX modules communicate with each other and
are supplied with the necessary operating voltage.
CPX modules Common term for the various modules which can be incorporated in a
CPXterminal
CPX terminal Modular, electric terminal type 50
Fail safe The Fail−safe parametrizing defines the signal status which outputs
should assume in the event of field bus communication faults. If there is a
current field bus communication fault (Fail−safe status), the signal states
will be directly influenced.
Field bus node Provides the connection to certain field buses. Transmits control signals
to the connected modules and monitors their functioning.
Forcing With Forcing, signal states are forced directly independently of actual
operating conditions.
Function button The 3 function buttons are situated directly under the display. The current
function of the function buttons is usually shown in the bottom line on the
display.
Handheld The handheld (hand control unit) serves for commissioning and diagnos
ing the CPX terminal.
I Digital input
Idle mode The Idle mode parametrizing defines the signal status which outputs
should assume when they switch to the Idle status. If the device is in the
Idle status, the signal states will be influenced directly. This parameter is
only relevant for certain field bus protocols.

Term/abbreviation Meaning
I/O modules Common term for the CPX modules which provide digital inputs and out
puts (CPX input modules and CPX output modules).
O Digital output
Picture scroll area Dark range in the picture scroll bar which indicates the position of the
visible picture section.
Picture scroll bar Not all the menu commands can be shown on the display at the same
time. The picture scroll bar indicates where the display area can be
shifted to in order that more menu commands can be viewed.
PLC/IPC Programmable logic controller/industrial PC
Pneumatic interface The pneumatic interface is the interface between the modular electrical
peripherals and the pneumatics.
