E-Plex®5xxx Series
Egress Monitoring Installation Addendum
Kaba’s E-Plex 5900 door lock will monitor opening and closing of
the door. This is accomplished by installing a position sensor in
the door, and installing a permanent magnet in the door frame.
These are shown in the pages that follow.
Installation:
Prepare the door following the E-Plex 5x00 cylindrical lock Installation
Instructions manual. The door surface will be prepared with a 1" diameter
recessed area approximately 1" deep, which will accommodate the sensor
leads to be mounted within the door. The center of this recessed area should
be 5 1
⁄2" directly above the center of the 2 1
⁄8" hole. A hole is required for the
spindle to pass through the door 2 7
⁄16" (2.4”) above the 2 1
⁄8" hole. Refer to
the Door and Door Frame Openings illustration below.
For wooden doors, the recessed area must be deep enough to meet the wiring
path drilled within the door. Do not drill the recessed area completely through
the door. For metal doors, only drill through the outside of the door. Do not
drill completely through.
Drill a horizontal hole for the sensor and wires through the edge of the door
to intersect with the recessed area 5 1
⁄2" above the latch. The horizontal hole
size is 3
⁄8" inch diameter and 1" deep for a tight t with the sensor. The
remainder should be a 1
⁄4" diameter wire path above or below the upper lock
mounting holes.
Caution: Make sure that the drill path does not interfere with the two upper
1
⁄4" lock mounting holes.

Wood: .250" dia hole, .375" deep.
Steel: .295" dia hole for

Ensure that no part of the
wires are pinched or shorted
during installation. Place
excess wire in the door, and
nish installing the lock ac-
cording to the instructions in
the manual adding the spindle
connecting both sides accord-
ing to the Spindle Installation
illustration at the right.
Locate the position for the
sensor magnet. Align the
magnet with the sensor now
mounted in the door edge.
In wood, drill a 1
⁄4" hole to be
3/8" deep for the magnet. In
steel, use a size M (.295") drill
and mount the magnet with
the collar provided.
Caution: The magnet is
strong. Avoid placing the
magnet near sensitive devices
such as magnetic stripe cards.
Route the wires through the door.
It is important to ensure that each
wire from the sensor is connected
to a wire extending from the lock
housing. Polarity is not required.
Insulate the junctions. Refer to the
Wire Connections at the left.
