1Product Liability and Warranty
1.1 General Information
We thank you for buying a KLS Martin product. This product carries the CE mark, which means that it
satisfies the essential requirements laid down in the EC Directive concerning medical devices.

1.3 Intended Use
The unit is used for electrosurgical cutting or coagulation of live human tissue.
The operator may operate the device only if an on-site functional test has previously been performed by
Gebrüder Martin or a person authorized by Gebrüder Martin. In addition, a responsible person designated
by the operator must have been instructed in the proper handling, application and operation of the unit, as
well as in its permissible combination with other medical devices, objects and accessories. This duly
instructed officer shall subsequently be responsible for familiarizing the operator’s staff with the unit as the
need arises. We recommend documenting all user instructions in a medical device logbook. A copy of the
logbook is available from Gebrüder Martin.
The operational safety of the unit must be verified at regular intervals, see section 7 Safety Check (SC), page 32.
If the device is not functionally reliable and/or safe to operate, it must be marked as “out of order” and
withdrawn from service. A technical check is required in any such case.
1.4 Warranty
Our Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale as most recently amended shall apply. Any agreements
diverging from these Standard Terms and Conditions shall not limit the statutory rights of the buyer.
Any warranty exceeding the above provisions shall require a contractual form and shall exclude
component-related vandalism, software updates and consumables.
Under this warranty, we will remedy free of charge any defects due to faulty workmanship or the use of
faulty materials, either through our Customer Service or directly at the factory. The warranty for the unit is
not extended by this.

Important Notices
The product may only be repaired by Gebrüder Martin or a qualified person or firm expressly authorized by
Gebrüder Martin to perform such work.
If the repair is carried out by a person or firm specially authorized by Gebrüder Martin, the operator of the
product is required to obtain from the repairer a certificate with details about the nature and scope of the
repair work done. This certificate must show the date of the repair and the details of the person or firm
carrying out the work and must be signed.
In all cases where a party other than the product manufacturer performed the work, repaired products
must be additionally marked with the repairer’s ID label.
Improper interventions or alterations performed by third parties during the period of limitation shall void
any and all warranty claims. Unauthorized actions performed on the product shall invalidate any liability
claims against Gebrüder Martin.
1.5 Inspection upon Receipt by User
Immediately upon receipt, the goods must be checked for completeness and potential damage in transit.
Notice of any such damage must be given immediately.

3Functional Principle
3.1 Monopolar Functional Principle
The electrosurgical unit Minicutter is a generator in which electrical energy from the mains supply is
converted into high-frequency current. In monopolar application, the HF current is transmitted to the
operation field via an active electrode in a handle or other surgical instrument. This leads to high energy
concentration in a small area at the application site of the active electrode in the tissue surroundings of the
point of contact, resulting in the desired electrosurgical effect. The current concentration is reduced during
the further transport of the energy through the patient to the neutral electrode applied on a large area.
Therefore, there is, in accordance with its intended purpose, no thermal effect in the area of the applied
neutral electrode. The circuit is closed via the supply cable of the neutral electrode.
The HF generator can be activated via either the foot switch or the finger switch on the handle.
3.2 Bipolar Functional Principle
Special design measures (insulation) permit design of bipolar instruments where the active electrode and
neutral electrode are positioned closely to each other. Here the path of the high-frequency current leads
only from one instrument tip to the other. Thus, there result very short current paths and surrounding
coagulation areas with low power requirements.

4.1 Technical Specification
The unit can be used universally and has excellent performance data. The unit meets the latest safety
standards.
The unit is characterized by the following constructional characteristics:
•The characteristics of the HF generator result in an automatic power adjustment for differing operating
electrodes, tissue types and cutting speeds within large limits.
•Easy handling thanks to the clear arrangement of all control elements and their labeling with easy-to-
remember function symbols. The power output is adjusted via rotary knobs. All connections for active
electrodes, neutral electrodes and foot switches are located on the front side.
•Two current types for cutting: Smooth cutting and cutting with eschar formation.
•Two current types for coagulation: Choice between a coagulation current type with high power output
for contact coagulation and a coagulation current type with high crest factor for spray coagulation.
•One current type for bipolar coagulation.
•Optical and acoustic signals to indicate HF activation with activation LEDs in different colors and
signal tones.
•Connection of one-piece as well as of two-piece neutral electrodes.
•Safety system according to IEC 60601-2-2 for cases of a unit-related output-error.
•No opening or cooling vents, no cooling fan. Low power loss thanks to high efficiency of the
generators.
•Hygiene-friendly foil front plate.
•Practice-oriented, high-quality accessory components.

4.3 Mains Connection
Before initial switching on of the unit, ensure that your grid complies with the voltage setting of the unit
indicated on the label (next to the power input). If the voltage ratings should not match, please contact our
Martin Service Center.
The device is available for the following voltage range:
• 100 – 240 VAC (50/60 Hz)
T1.6 AH, 250V

Danger of electric shock!
In order to avoid the risk of electric shock, this device may be connected only to a grounded mains supply.
Connect the device to the power outlet using the mains cable. Set mains switch (10) on the front side of the
unit to position “I”.
In order to be able to completely separate the unit from the grid in the event of danger, either the power
socket of the unit or the outlet into which the mains cable is plugged in should remain accessible.
For the decommissioning of the unit, no special measures are necessary.
4.4 Equipotential Bonding Connection
Equipotential bonding, aka potential equalization, is the conductive electrical connection of
the casings of units. It ensures that the units will always, even in case of an electric defect,
have the same potential. Equipotential bonding is required for certain operating theaters,
e.g. for intracardial operations, and can be realized via the connector for equipotential
bonding (19). The necessary connection cable is not included in the scope of delivery and
can be obtained from us if required.
4.5 Switching On / Off
After switching on the device using the mains switch (10), the unit is switched into operation mode. After
switching the unit on it is operational. The surface of the rocker switch must light up in green.
4.6 Monopolar Operation

4.6.1 Connection of the Neutral Electrode
In order to lead the current introduced into the patient back to the generator during monopolar
application, a large-area neutral electrode that is applied to the skin of the patient is used. Neutral
electrodes are available as reusable electrodes and as disposable products.
To ensure continuous application during the entire operation time, we recommend a two
-part single-use
adhesive neutral electrode. Only a two
-part adhesive neutral electrode ensures continuous monitoring of
the patient. Using a two
-surface neutral electrode, the integrated Patient Control System (PCS) by
Gebrüder Martin continually monitors the neutral electrode for proper application.
If a two-piece neutral electrode is connected, the status indicator (12) for the neutral electrode goes dark
when a safe application state has been reached. As individual run-in times are to be expected, a lead period
must be taken into account during application.

If the neutral electrode is not connected, or in case of insufficient contact to the skin, the status
indicator (12) for the neutral electrode flashes green. If you attempt to activate the device in this state
using the finger or foot switch, an additional warning signal is sounded. The HF current cannot be activated.
Risk of burns from improper handling of the
neutral electrode!
The risk of burns under the neutral electrode is particularly high when monopolar cutting or contact
coagulation currents with particularly high power and longer duration are being used
Safe contact of the neutral electrode must be ensu
red for the total duration of the high frequency
application. The neutral electrode must butt against the patient's body as close to the operation field as
possible, reliably, and with its whole surface.
A one
-part neutral electrode cannot be monitored. In case of insufficient contact, there will be no warning
signal!
When using neutral electrodes that are designed for monitoring but not compatible, monitoring is not
possible.
4.6.2 Connection of Handles
For monopolar cutting or coagulation, a handle with finger switch or a handle without finger switch in
combination with a foot switch can be connected. Handles are connected to the connection port (13).
The foot switch is connected to the connection socket (15).
Insert the desired active electrode into the hexagonal guide of the surgical handle until the hexagon of the
electrode snaps into place. This prevents rotation of the electrode during the application.
For monopolar cutting or coagulation, a handle with finger switch or a handle
without finger switch in combination with a foot switch can be connected. Handles
are connected to the connection port (13). The foot switch is connected to the
connection socket (15).
Insert the desired active electrode into the hexagonal guide of the surgical handle
until the hexagon of the electrode snaps into place. This prevents rotation of the
electrode during the application.
Risk of electric shock through contact with live components!
If the high
-frequency current is activated when the electrode is in use or being replaced, high voltage is
produced upon contact of the patient or user with the electrode, and there is a risk of electric shock.
Never activate the high-frequency current while inserting or replacing an electrode.

4.6.3 Selection of the Current Type
The unit has two monopolar operating modes and one bipolar one:
•Monopolar Cut (monopolar cutting)
•Monopolar Coag (monopolar coagulation)
•Bipolar Coag (bipolar coagulation), see section 4.7.3 “Selecting the Bipolar Operating Mode”, page 19)
The front is divided into two control fields for distinction of the monopolar operating modes:
Monopolar Cut
In the control panel Monopolar Cut that is marked yellow on the
front plate of the unit, an indicator LED (2) indicates the activation of
cutting current, and there are two different current types available
for cutting. These are:
Cutting 1
Clean cut without eschar formation
Cutting 2
Cutting current with eschar formation
Monopolar Coag.
In the operation panel Monopolar Coag. that is marked blue on the
front plate of the unit, an indicator LED (5) indicates the activation of
monopolar coagulation current, and there are two current type
available for coagulation:
Contact coagulation
Coagulation with high depth upon direct contact between electrode
and tissue
Spray coagulation
Coagulation current with low depth for surface coagulation with
sparks (fulguration).
When working with monopolar coagulation currents, there is a risk
of burns from use of insufficiently
isolated instruments!
If instruments and active electrodes are not sufficiently insulated, there is the danger of exposure of the
user to HF voltage. The operating glove is no defined electrical insulation. It does not p
rotect from
possible arcing.
In cases of indirect application using a hand
-held instrument (surgical forceps), this instrument should be
insulated in a manner that the user is not exposed to the HF voltage transmitted to the instrument.

Risk of burns
from high HF current concentration!
The hazard potential of electrosurgery increases with the power applied. Therefore please note the
following:
•
The high-frequency power should be set to the lowest possible setting for the respective application.
•
An insufficient effect while using the standard setting can, for example, be caused by poorly applied
neutral electrodes, insufficient contact in plug connections, cables that are damaged under the
insulation or encrusted electrodes. This must be checked before the HF power setting is increased.
•
A defect in the electrosurgical unit may lead to an unintended increase of the output power.
Therefore, a protective circuit to avoid overpowering is integrated into the unit.
4.6.4 Power Setting

For setting the monopolar output power, the power adjuster (1) must be
activated. The power setting is adjusted starting from a predefined minimum
value up to a maximum value depending on the selected current type (see
section 9, “Technical Data”, page 38). The output power increases linearly
with the angle of rotation; the relation for each current type is indicated in the
diagrams. The specified power is always the maximum power that can be
emitted to a nominal load. In surgical applications, the power actually emitted
to tissue is usually lower.
4.6.5 Operation
Upon activation the HF current is switched on according to the previously selected operating mode by
triggering the handle or foot switch. The HF current is provided in accordance with the preset current types
and the set power. After activation, a continuous tone is emitted and the activation LED for the operating
mode lights up.
The rules for application of HF surgery defined in section
5 “Safety Measures”, page 22, must be
observed as a matter of principle; particular attention is to be paid to safe application of the neutral
electrode and optimum positioning of the patient.
•Upon simultaneous activation of two control elements (e.g. the blue and yellow buttons on the
handle), the electrosurgical unit will be blocked and HF power output deactivated.
•After prolonged application of HF current at high power, the surface of the device can heat up
significantly.
•The accessory equipment must be suitable for at least the voltages indicated in section 9 Currents,
their Properties and Technical Data, page 34.
•Only accessory equipment in perfect condition may be used.

Risk of electric shock!
When inserting the electrode and while replacing an electrode, the high
-frequency current must not be
activated.
Danger of burns from unintentional actuation of a finger switch!
Unintentional actuation of a finger switch can cause uncontrolled HF activation. This can result in a
thermal effect at an unintended body location, for example when a surgical instrument is connected.
When working with monopolar coagulation currents,
there is a risk of burns from use of insufficiently
isolated instruments!
Insufficient isolation of instruments and active electrodes may expose the surgeon to HF voltages.
Surgical
gloves do not constitute a defined electrical insulation. It does not protect from possible arcing.
During indirect application using a hand
-held instrument (surgical forceps), the instrument must be
isolated to prevent the surgeon’s exposure to the HF voltage transmitted to the instrument.
The HF current is delivered in accordance with the preset current types and the set power. Pressing an
activation button on the handle or foot switch activates the selected working channel. At the same time, an
activation sound specific for cutting or coagulation, respectively, sounds, and the associated indicator
LED (2), (5) or (8) lights up.
Risk of malfunction, danger of injury
Improper handling by the user can cause the device to fail and lead to injuries! Therefore, please note:
•
After prolonged application of HF current at high power, the surface of the unit can heat up
significantly.
•
The accessory equipment must be suitable for at least the voltages indicated in section 9 “Technical
Data”, page 34.
•Only accessory equipment in perfect condition may be used.
4.6.6 Functional Test
All functions of the unit must be checked before using the unit. Follow the test steps below to perform
a monopolar functional check:
•Remove plug of the connection cable for the neutral electrode from the connection socket (11).
The red control LED (12) is flashing. When an attempt is made to activate a monopolar HF current,

an intermittent acoustic warning signal is sounded instead of the continuous activation tone.
The activation of HF current is blocked. When selected, bipolar currents can, however, be activated.
•Re-insert the plug of the connection cable for the single-surface neutral electrode into the connection
socket (11). The red control LED (12) must no longer flash. When using a split neutral electrode ensure
that it is correctly applied to the patient so that the alarm disappears.
Connect the connection cable with electrode handle to socket (13). Activate the selected current type
by actuating the finger switch on the electrode handle or the foot switch. The activation LEDs (2), (5) or
(8) assigned to the current types must light up depending on the selected current type, and the HF
activation signal must be sounded.
Risk of malfunction, danger of injury!
If the HF activation signal can be hear
d while no foot switch or handle is connected, the device is faulty.
The device must not be operated. A technical check is required in any such case.
Risk of malfunction, danger of injury!
If the HF activation signal can be heard while the foot switch
or handle is connected but none of the
control elements is actuated, one of these accessory parts is defective.
This accessory must not be used. It must be replaced.
4.7 Bipolar Operation
For the assignment of the numbering, see section 4.2 Functions of the Control Elements, Connections and
Displays, page 11.
4.7.1 Function of the Neutral Electrode
For bipolar application no neutral electrode is required. When selecting bipolar coagulation, the monitoring
of the neutral electrode is deactivated.
As a changeover from bipolar to monopolar application during the course of an operation is to be
expected, we recommend application of a neutral electrode under all circumstances.

4.7.2 Connecting Bipolar Instruments
An instrument connection cable is connected to socket (14) for bipolar coagulation.
A variety of instruments can be connected to this cable. The activation is triggered
exclusively via the foot switch that must be connected to socket (15).
The neutral electrode does not have to be connected for bipolar coagulation.
4.7.3 Selecting the Bipolar Operating Mode

In the right control field Bipolar Coag. that is marked blue on the
front plate of the unit, an indicator LED (8) indicates the activation
of bipolar coagulation current, and there is one current type
available for bipolar coagulation:

4.7.4 Bipolar Power Setting

Use the power controller (1) for setting the output power. The power
setting is adjusted from a preset minimum value up to a maximum value
depending on the selected current type (see section 9 Technical Data,
page 34). The output power increases linearly with the angle of rotation;
the relation for each current type is indicated in the diagrams.
The specified power is always the maximum power that can be emitted
to a nominal load. In surgical applications, the power actually emitted to
tissue is usually lower.
In the lower adjusting range of the power controller, the power output is
not precisely specified. Therefore, use of the unit in this power range is
not recommended.

4.7.5 Bipolar Operating Mode
For bipolar operation, the current type bipolar coagulation must be activated!
The current type bipolar coagulation is activated by pressing the foot switch.
The bipolar HF current is provided in accordance with the selected power. At the same time, an acoustic
signal can be heard, and the corresponding activation LED (8) lights up.

After prolonged application of HF current at high power, the surface of the unit can heat up significantly.
4.7.6 Bipolar Functional Check
All functions of the unit must be checked before using the unit. Perform the following test steps for the
bipolar functional check:
•The neutral electrode does not have to be connected for bipolar operation. As described in
section 4.7 "Bipolar Operation", p. 18, we recommend connecting the neutral electrodes even for
bipolar mode.
•Connect connection cable with instrument for bipolar coagulation to socket (14).
•Connect single-pedal foot switch to socket (15) on the rear.
•Activate the bipolar HF current via the foot switch. The activation LED (8) must light up, and the
HF activation signal must sound.
Risk of malfunction, danger of injury!
If the HF activation signal can be heard when no foot switch is connected, the unit is defective.
•The unit must not be operated. A technical check is required in any such case.

•This accessory must not be used. It must be replaced.
