A. Presentation
The objective of this Service Manual is to assist the
Dealers in performing an efficient maintenance of
Massey Ferguson combines.
A good Product Support is getting more and more
important. In addition to sell a good product, a good
assistance is essential because it is the way to
achieve the main goal, which is the Customer’s
satisfaction.
In this context, the maintenance structure rendered
by the Dealer is extremely important and, therefore,
it should be performed by trained personnel who
are perfectly familiar with the different components
of the machine.
Besides attending periodic refresher courses at one
of the Training Units of AGCO do Brasil, you should
refer to this Manual before performing the job,
whenever you have any doubt.
For that reason, the Manual should always be
available at the workshop.
Furthermore, it should always be kept under good
conditions of use, the Service Department should
be attentive to the updates that may be introduced
to the machines and, therefore, to the Manual.

B. How to use this Manual
- This Manual was divided in Modules (01, 02, 03,
04, 05), each one describing a specific system
of the machine.
Examples (Modules):
01 Introduction
02 Harvesting systems
03Engines
- Each module is divided in Sections (A, B, C...),
each one describes a part integrating the
system.
Example - Module 4: Transmission:
04A01 Variable drive
04B01 Clutch
04C01 Gearbox
In the cases where there are different versions
for the same components, the Section suffix (01,
02, 03...) is changed.
Example (Module 3 - Engines):
03B01 Perkins Engine
03B02 Cummins Engine
03B03 Sisu Engine
- Each Section is divided in Chapters (A, B, C,
D...).
Examples: Disassembly, Inspection of
components, Specifications, Adjustments, etc.
- Each page of the Sections has a sequential

C. Safety
- Always check that no one is in a dangerous
position before you start the engine or operate
any control (threshing mechanism, concave
adjust lever, hydraulic levers, etc).
- Always turn off the engine before leaving the
operation place.
- Always keep your hands, feet and clothes safely
away from belts, chains, pulleys, sprockets or
any moving part. Make sure that all
protective shields are in place.
- Wait until all moving parts have stopped
completely before starting any kind of service.
- Before starting the service, the platform should
always be resting on the ground and all
hydraulic control levers should be moved back
and forth a few times with the engine off for
pressure relief.
- Never allow anyone to be near to the platform
or the machine when the engine is running.
- If it is necessary to make some sort of
adjustment under the platform, make sure that
the security (1) channel for the feeder hydraulic
system is correctly in place. It is recommended
to provide additional supporting points for the
platform.

- Before working on the electrical system, make
sure that the ground cable is disconnected from
the battery, or the general switch (2) is turned
off. Disconnect the battery while carrying
out other repairs too, in order to avoid the starter
motor from being turned on accidentally.
- Take special care when carrying out all checks,
adjustments and tests that are done with the
engine running, the thresher or hydraulic
controls operating or the combine moving. It is
better not to do any check under these
conditions.
But if it is necessary, follow the correct
procedures and safety rules very closely.
- Before removing any hydraulic component,
make sure that all the pressure in the system
has been released.
- When the hydraulic system is being lifted to do
repairs to the wheels and axles, make sure that
the hydraulic cylinders, trestles and blocks
being used are secure and strong enough for
the job.
- Safety also depends on the tools, equipment
and work practices used by the mechanic who
does the regular servicing of the combine.
-Fig. 6: Always use the right tool and equipment
for the job, especially when you are working with
whole assemblies or heavy parts. Make sure
that the hydraulic jack, hoist, chain, etc are all
in perfect condition, and with capacity
compatible with the load.
-Fig. 7: Whenever you use electrical equipment,
check that it is properly grounded and that the
cord is not stripped.
-Fig. 8: When welding, disconnect the battery
and use the correct protective gear: welding
masks or goggles, gloves and apron. Welding
without eye protection will damage your eyes
very quickly, and probably permanently!

-Don’t let the floor of the workshop get soaked
with oil; this could cause accidents, and it lowers
the tone of the shop.
Remember: a well organized workshop reflects
the quality of the people that work there.
- Don’t leave the engine running in a closed place
without ventilation. It only takes a few minutes
for the exhaust fumes to start to poison you.
- Don’t smoke in the workshop: there is always
the risk of fire due the great variety of flammable
products.
- Never stand under hanging loads. Even though
the equipment is perfectly safe, there is no
reason to tempt fate.
- Don’t work with long hair, or with loose clothes.
If they get caught in moving machinery, they can
cause serious accidents.
- Before starting the engine, check that no one is
working on it. Check that no tools or other loose
devices have been left on it.
- Use a warning notice on the instrument panel
to make sure no one starts the engine if it has
parts removed.

D. Proper work techniques at the
workshop
Most repair and service procedures recommended
in this manual assume that the assembly is
completely taken apart and removed from the
combine.
Many services can be performed without removing
the assembly from the machine. The mechanic will
decide when this is the case, taking into account
the amount of work to be done and the difficulty of
access.
The following important points should be kept in
mind.
Identify the problem and clean the combine
before disassembling it.
If possible, specify the problem and the work needed
before taking the machine apart. Take great care not
to let any foreign matter get into the hydraulic, fuel
or air systems.
Do not mix up parts - Fig. 2
Pay attention when you take anything apart, taking
note of parts that must not be swapped. When you
take an assembly apart, separate the nuts and bolts
in divided trays with a screen bottom that permits
oil and water to drain away.
Inspect all parts while taking the machine
apart, and clean them well.
Label the parts you remove, and protect the
precision and polished surfaces.
Use only Genuine Massey Ferguson Spare
Parts
Using non-genuine parts can cause big problems.
Non-genuine spare parts may look the same, but
they are not. Some parts have special properties
known only to the manufacturer.

They are the result of special requirements
established by long research, engineering tests and
experience in the field.
AGCO keeps a constant program of improvement
of the parts. Many of such improvements may not
be detected by visual comparison.
Therefore, it is essential that only genuine spare parts
are used.

Tension rule for belts and chains
To check belt tension, always follow this rule:
Apply a load of 10 to 15 Kg at the center of the
largest free length of the supports.
The deflection found in the belts and chains should
be 1 - 2% of that distance.
For chains, apply enough load to pull all deflection
to one side: the deflection should also be 1 - 2% of
the distance between the centers.
Interference fitting of bushings, retainers and
bearings.
Always use a special tool for this job. When
necessary, use a press to apply force.
Improvisation in this case leads to wasted time and
damaged pieces, which will cause operating
problems.
With bushings, check the internal diameter (or
external diameter, if that is the case) and make an
adjustment if you need to, based on the
specifications in this manual for each situation.
Use correct pullers to remove pulleys, hubs
and gears:
Using hammers and levers may damage the parts,
and will probably take longer than using the right
tools!
NOTE: use a protector for the end of the axle.
Always use the right tool for each task:
Saving a few steps to get the right wrench may end
up costing more time after you damage the art you
are working on.

Removing a stud that has broken in place
Drill a hole about half the diameter of the broken
stud and use a bolt extractor with the opposite thread
to the bolt.
Then remove the stud by turning the bolt extractor
anti-clockwise (in the case of a bolt with right hand
thread).
NOTE:
When you are putting a bolt in a dead end
hole, make sure there is no oil or other
impurity in the hole. Oil forms a hydraulic
block which may damage the housing.
Removing jammed nuts
There are several ways, according to the situation.
Choose the right one for the situation, and always
make sure you don’t damage adjacent parts.

Correct locking of nuts and bolts
Check the condition of cotter pin or other means. It
is better to replace them whenever they are removed.
There are also a number of ways to stop nuts
or bolts from shaking loose under normal
working conditions
Experience and common sense will tell you the best
one to use in each situation.
1 - Locking glue
2 - Spring washer
3 - Lock nuts
4 - Locking plates
Whenever you use force on a wrench, always
pull it towards you
If you push on the wrench and it slips, you are likely
to hurt your hands.
Use open wrenches the right way
Working with the wrench reversed puts more stress
on it.

The only time you should reverse the wrench is to
work in very narrow spaces, where you need to
alternate the wrench until the nut or bolt is loose.
Removing nuts from injector tubes
A box wrench is better, but first you need to cut an
opening in the wrench for the tube to pass through.
Use this wrench only for this purpose.
Mounting pieces with interference fit:
Always heat the external piece (bearings, hubs, etc)
and/or cool the internal piece (axles, valve guides
and seats, etc).
Heating makes a piece expand, and cooling makes
it shrink, so using this method you make the fitting
easier and reduce damage to the pieces.
Heating should never be done with a direct flame,
because this would weaken the piece and make it
brittle.
You should heat the piece in hot oil (80 – 90°C / 176
– 194°F) or by electrical induction.
Cooling can be done in a freezer, or in a bucket of
ice or dry ice.

When performing welding
Always disconnect the battery, and remember the
following detail: Attach the negative terminal (-) of
the welder to the same piece you are welding (+).
This is to avoid having a high current flowing through
pieces like bearings and damaging them.
Mounting retainers, always use a special tool
for that purpose
When you are mounting retainers, always use the
right tool for the job, to make sure the piece is
mounted in the correct position and undamaged.
Otherwise, it may start to leak after just a few hours
of operation. You must also lubricate the lip of the
retainer, and make sure that the seat of the retainer
is clean. Lubricate the retainer lip. Take special care
when the retainer passes over a spline axle, a
keyway, etc. The slightest cut on the lip will cause
leakage.
Removing and installing bearings
Use the proper pullers to remove the bearings.
It is important the puller rests on the racer with
interference, avoiding the balls or rollers to be
damaged.
During the assembly:
- Never hit a bearing directly with a hammer
during the assembly. Use an appropriate tool
with the cup or disc shape.
- When mounting a bearing on an axle, press on
the inner race; when mounting a bearing in a
hole, press on the outer race.

Protection of removed assemblies
If the tractor is going to stay disassembled for a long
time, organize the parts and protect them from dust
and humidity.
Keep new parts in their packaging until they are to
be used.
When putting the parts together, make sure that each
one is perfectly clean, with no blocked holes or
galleries.
The connectors, tubes and terminals of the fuel
injection pump and nozzles should be covered to
stop any impurities from getting in.
You should do the same with the turbocharger, intake
and exhaust manifolds, etc.
Precision and safety checks
When putting the tractor back together, complete
every step for one part before moving on to the next
part. Finish the assembly of one part or component
before proceeding to the next.
Make all of the adjustments that are recommended.
Check as many times as necessary to make sure
that everything is exactly right.
Shims
When removing bearing adjustment shims, keep
them together, and identify their location, store them
clean and flat.
Electrical cables
Whenever you remove or disconnect a group of
wires or cables, identify the correct position of each
one with a tape label, to avoid incorrect reassembly.
