・An important note is a type of precaution, which if neglected could result in a loss of
data, decreased accuracy or instrument malfunction/failure.
A note emphasizes or supplements important points of the main text. A note supplies
information that may only apply in special cases (e.g.. Memory limitations, equipment
configurations, or details that apply to specific versions of a program).
NOTE
A tip is a type of note that helps the user apply the techniques and procedures described
in the text to their specific needs.
TIP
It also provides reference information associated with the topic being discussed.

WARRANTY
In the event that the Mitutoyo QM-Height should prove defective in workmanship or material,
within one year from the date of original purchase for use, it will be repaired or replaced, at our
option, free of charge upon its prepaid return to us.
If the unit fails or is damaged because of the following causes, it will be subject to a repair charge,
even if it is still under warranty.
1. Failure or damage owing to inappropriate handling or unauthorized modification.
2. Failure or damage owing to transport, dropping, or relocation of the machine after purchase.
3. Failure or damage owing to fire, salt, gas, abnormal voltage, or natural catastrophe.
This warranty is effective only where the instrument is properly installed and operated in
conformance with the instructions in this manual.

PRECAUTIONS
・Do not use this gage in locations where it will be directly exposed to cutting fluids,
water, dust, etc. (Fig.1).
IMPORTANT
・Do not use this gage in locations where it will be exposed to direct sunlight or a draft of
hot air (Fig.2).
・Use the gage within a temperature range of 0℃to 40℃. When performing precision
measurements, the ambient temperature must be maintained as close as possible to
20℃with minimum fluctuation.
・When displacing the gage on a surface plate, slide it by holding the base.
・To clean the column, base, probe, or display panel, wipe it using a lint-free cloth or
paper towel dampened with a neutral detergent. Do not use an organic solvent such
as thinner.
・Absolutely do not apply an external voltage to The QM-Height with, for example, an
electric engraver. The gage may be damaged (Fig.3).
・After using the gage, be sure to turn off the power.
・If the gage will not be used for an extended period of time, remove the batteries from
the gage. Batteries could leak and damage the gage.
・Do not charge or disassemble the batteries. They may be short circuited.
・Use only LR6 batteries (AA alkaline batteries).
・Do not apply excessive force to the gage or drop it. Also, do not disassemble the gage
except to remove the battery cover when replacing the batteries (Fig.4).
・After removing the batteries and unplugging the AC adapter, be sure to wait for more
than 10 seconds to reinstall the batteries and plug the AC adapter again.

This chapter gives the name and function of each part
and the setup procedure.
1.1 Checking the Packed Components

(14) RS-232C connector: Used to connect to a personal computer.

(3) Indicates the ABS (absolute) measurement mode.
(4) Indicates the INC (incremental) measurement mode.
(5) Indicates a tolerance judgment result.
(6) Indicates that a preset value/preset value is being set.
(7) Indicates that the LCD back-lighting is effective.
(8) Indicates that a measured value in memory is being called.
(9) Indicates the inch/mm unit system.
(10) Indicates that the minimum and maximum values are being
searched for at scanning measurement.
(11) Indicates that the upward oriented probe is being brought into
contact.
(12) Indicates that a measured value is being held
(13) Indicates that the count direction is minus.
(14) Indicates that the SHIFT key has been pressed.

(2) Switch unit
Normal state SHIFT key held down state
Turns the power on and off. If no operation is performed for more than 5 minutes, the power is turned off
automatically. For information about the Auto Power-off setup, refer to "3.3 User Setup".
Enters the height, step, or width measurement.
Enters the scribing mode.
Enters the displacement measurement. Calls a displacement value.
Changes another switch function while holding down this key.
Switches the unit system between inch and mm, or increases a numeric value at the setup of a preset value or a
tolerance, or changes a memory number to confirm a measured result.
Enters the minimum height measurement.
Sets the lower limit for tolerance
judgment
Enters the inside diameter measurement.
Calls a measured inside diameter.
Holds a measured value, or outputs data.
Switches the count direction
or moves the digit for which a preset value or a tolerance is set.
Enters the maximum height measurement.

Calls a measured outside diameter.
Calls a measured result.
Switches the resolution.
Switches the measurement mode between the INC mode and
ABS mode. When confirming the measurement result, switches
between pitch display and a height from the origin.

Clears measured data in memory. Enables or disables the tolerance
judgment function.
Loads each scanning measurement value and various settings. Enables or disables the GO/NG judgment
with the LCD back-lighting.

1.BEFORE STARTING MEASUREMENT
1.3 Setting Up
1.3.1 Required environment for installation
The QM-Height is a precision measuring instrument, and at the same time a
precision electronic device. To use The QM-Height accurately, be sure to install it
in an environment that satisfies the following conditions.
IMPORTANT 1) Temperature and humidity
a)The QM-Height has been adjusted so as to ensure the appropriate accuracy
at 20°C. Therefore, it must be used at an ambient temperature of 20°C.
b)Avoid high humidity, direct sunlight, and exposure to cold or hot air
flowing from air-conditioners.
2) Vibration
Install The QM-Height in a place where there is minimum vibration. If
vibration affects The QM-Height during measurement, the measured value
may become unstable. If The QM-Height is used for an extended period
where there is vibration, the precision parts may be damaged, resulting in
reduced accuracy.
3) Dust
The linear encoder in The QM-Height has a cover. If this linear encoder
becomes dusty or scratched, The QM-Height may not operate normally.
Further, if dust or grease contaminate the bearing guide surface of the slider,
the measuring accuracy may be degraded. Consequently, use The QM-Height
in an environment where there is minimum dust.
4) Electromagnetic noise
Do not connect the AC adapter (option) to a power supply for large electric
current such as for machine tools or large CNC measuring instruments.
Place The QM-Height well away from equipment that generates
electromagnetic noise, such as welding machines or electric discharge
machines (EDMs).

1.3.2 Installing QM-Height on a surface plate
The following installation work must be done by at least two persons.
When unpacking the units, observe the unpacking instructions sheet
"QM-Height 600/350 Unpacking Procedure (No. 99MAF019M)" in the containers.
1)After taking the main unit out of its container, place it base down on a stable
bench. Then remove the wrapping.
2)Wipe off any grime and anti-corrosion oil from the bottom surface of base using
a cloth dampened with alcohol. Then set the base gently on the surface plate
after it has also been cleaned properly.

The moving parts such as the slider have been
Fixed with screws, etc., so as not to move before shipping.
Remove the fixtures according to the following procedure. (See
Fig.1.)
(1) Remove the three fixing bolts.
(2) Insert the supplied rubber caps into the holes
from which the bolts are removed.
(3) Unscrew the bolts that mount the fixing bracket,
and then remove the bracket.
(4) Loosen the clamp screw while holding the
slider up/down wheel with one hand. If doing
so, the slider unit can be moved up and down.
Move up the slider in a small amount, and
then tighten the clamp screw again to fix the
slider. (Exercise care since the slider moves
up freely if you release your hand from the
up/down wheel.)
(5) Insert the supplied probe, and then clamp the
probe with the probe clamp knob. (Refer to
"1.3.5 Attaching the probe".)
(6) Loosen the clamp knob. (Loosen the knob all
the way until it stops.)

In case of necessity for transporting the main unit after unpacking, reverse the above procedure,
and then store it in the container box before transportation.
If the main unit is transported without fixing the moving parts, the main unit may be damaged.
Therefore, it is recommended to carefully store the fixing bracket, bolts, and packing materials.

1.3.4 Installing the batteries
This gage is supplied with batteries. They have been packed separately.
Unscrew the two screws to remove the battery cover, as shown in Fig.2. Place the supplied
batteries in the battery box in the base, observing correct polarity. Remount the battery cover
securely with the screws.

•The supplied batteries are used only for the purpose of checking the functions and
performance of the QM-Height, therefore it may not satisfy the specified battery life.
•The batteries must be replaced when is lit on the LCD. Replace all four
alkaline batteries at the same time. If they are not replaced by new ones, it may
cause malfunction.

1.3.5 Attaching the probe
•To use the supplied
φ 5 stepped probe, insert the probe into the probe holder
opening in the main unit as far as possible, and then clamp it in place by
tightening the probe clamp knob.

•To replace the probe with the optional scriber, observe the following procedure.
(1) Lock the clamp knob.
(2) Loosen the probe clamp knob,
and then replace the probe with
the scriber.
(3) Tighten the probe clamp knob with
the scriber tip being in contact with a
surface plate.

1.3.6 Attaching the grip
The optional grip can be attached to the base in order to move the main unit easily
during measurement. As shown in the Figure below, detach the cap, then attach the
grip securely with the two supplied screws.

OPERATION
This chapter explains The QM-Height practical operating
procedure and gives actual measurement examples.
2.1 Operating Procedure
2.1.1 Moving and clamping the slider
The slider can be moved by holding the slider up/down lever by hand (as in the left figure).
However, be sure to use the slider up/down wheel to gently move the slider when bringing the
probe into contact with a surface plate or a workpiece. The up/down wheel allows fine
displacement and coarse displacement of the slider (as in the right figure). Use one of the means
for moving the slider depending on the situation.
To clamp the slider and probe for scribing, etc., turn both the clamp knob, shown in the left Fig,
and the clamp screw, shown in the right Fig. clockwise, respectively. This allows scribing to be
made with the slider and probe clamped.

2.1.2 Sliding the main unit
To slide the main unit on a surface plate during measurement, hold the base with your right hand
and hold the grip with your left hand.
IMPORTANT Sliding the main unit by holding a spot other than the base may adversely affect the measuring
accuracy and the instrument. Absolutely avoid holding a spot other than the base.

2.OPERATION
2.2 Measurement Preparation
2.2.1 Setting the ABS origin
•To set the ABS origin:

Confirm that +000.000 mm is displayed on the LCD. (If other numeric
character string is displayed, press to clear it and display
+000.000 mm.)


1) Move down the probe until it comes into contact with the surface
plate.
2) When the probe comes into contact with the surface plate, slowly
move down the probe until the buzzer sounds. The ABS origin setup
is complete if the counter starts counting.

•To set the INC origin:

IMPORTANT •When bringing the probe into contact with a surface plate (or a workpiece) be sure to make a
gentle contact of the probe. Rough contact may cause an origin setup error.
•If the temperature environment has changed, set the ABS origin again.
For information about the ABS origin setup using a gauge block, refer to section 2.2.3 "Presetting
procedure".
TIP
* What is the ABS origin?
Usually a workpiece to be measured has a reference. The dimensions of the workpiece in a drawing
are described from the reference. Therefore, the measurement values are obtained from the
reference and are used as the measurement results. QM-Height performs measurement by setting
the reference to an origin. If an origin has been set, a measured height becomes a coordinate value
from the origin. There are two QM-Height “origins”, as follows:
A)The "ABS origin" becomes the reference of a measuring machine.
B)The "INC origin" becomes the relative reference from the ABS origin
Use one of the origins according to the measurement purpose.
(For information about switching between ABS and INC, refer to "2.3.13 Other functions".)

A) ABS origin
The ABS origin is set on the surface plate where the QM-Height is installed. Measurement
results are basically coordinate values from this origin. Therefore, always set up the ABS
origin prior to measurement. If the measurement environment or the probe is changed, set the
ABS origin again.
B) INC origin
The INC origin is used for obtaining a coordinate from the reference on a workpiece.
2.2.2 Setting the ball diameter
•If using the QM-Height for the first time or the probe is changed, set the probe ball diameter (to
compensate for the ball diameter).

oriented probe into contact with the lower gauge block as shown in the
figure. (Lower the probe until the buzzer sounds.) (*2)

(*2) Use gauge blocks with a height of 20mm or more. Or, use the optional gauge blocks
(excluding the optional setup models).
TIP In the above example the direction (count direction inversion function) is positive. If the direction
is negative, first orient the probe upward to contact with the upper block, and then orient the probe
downward to contact with the lower block.
IMPORTANT When bringing the probe into contact with a surface plate (or a workpiece) be sure to make a gentle
contact of the probe. Rough contact may cause an origin setup error.

2.OPERATION
2.2.3 Presetting procedure
1) Procedure for presetting (setting the origin to an arbitrary value) (Example) Set the origin to 25.000mm.

Press to display the most recent preset value, making the PRESET symbol blink in the
upper right of the LCD.
2 Press toblinkthe"+"or"-"sign.
If is pressed at this time, the "+" sign will change to the "-" sign.
3 Press to move the blinking digit to the tens digit.
4 Each time is pressed, the blinking digit changes to 0, 1, 2, ... 8, 9, and 0. Press the switch
twice to display 2.
5 Display 5 in the units digit, referring to the procedure in steps 3 and 4.
2) Procedure for setting the origin to the registered preset value (Example) Recall 25.000mm that has been registered.

7 Bring the probe directly into contact with the 25mm reference block. The PRESET symbol goes
off, indicating that presetting has been completed.(For measurement using the scriber, pressing the
when the scriber is in contact with the 25mm reference block, etc. makes the PRESET
symbol go off and completes the presetting.)
IMPORTANT When bringing the probe into contact with a surface plate (or a workpiece) be sure to make a gentle
contact of the probe. Rough contact may cause an origin setup error.
NOTE If you perform presetting in the INC mode, use the same procedure as above. However, if the INC
symbol is blinking, bring the probe into contact with a surface plate (or a workpiece) once to start
counting, then perform the presetting procedure.

2.3 Measurement
2.3.1 Height measurement
This section gives two examples of height measurement procedures.
Height measurement is categorized into the following two types.
(1) Top surface measurement: Measures the height of a top surface on a workpiece from the origin.
(2) Bottom surface measurement: Measures the height of a bottom surface on a workpiece from the
origin.

•Measure the height of the top surface on the workpiece. •Measure the height of the bottom surface on the workpiece.
To measure the top surface height (example 1):

2 Move the probe onto the top surface on the workpiece. Slowly lower
the probe until the buzzer sounds.
To measure the bottom surface height (example 2):

2 Move the probe onto the bottom surface on the workpiece. Slowly
raise the probe until the buzzer sounds.
3 If measurement is successfully completed, "H" is displayed. This
displayed value is the measurement result. (If an RS-232C output
device or an external printer is connected, result output is performed.

4 Bring the probe out of contact with the workpiece. The counter
returns to normal counting.(For holding a measured value until the
next measurement even if the probe is moved away from the
workpiece, modify the setting according to the procedure described in
the section 3.3 "User Setup".)
 

When bringing the probe into contact with a surface plate (or a workpiece) be sure to make a
gentle contact of the probe. Rough contact may cause an origin setup error.
