Description
Intended Use
Hot melt application heads in the series EP 30 −hereafter also referred to
as application head −may be used only for bead application of hot melt
adhesives.
Any other use is considered to be unintended. Nordson will not be liable for
personal injury or property damage resulting from unintended use.
Intended use includes the observance of Nordson safety instructions.
Nordson recommends obtaining detailed information on the materials to be
used.
Unintended Use −Examples −
The application head may not be used under the following conditions:
SWhen changes or modifications have been made by the customer
SIn defective condition
SIn a potentially explosive atmosphere
SWhen values stated under Technical Data are not complied with.
The application head may not be used to apply the following materials:
SExplosive and flammable materials
SErosive and corrosive materials
SFood products.

Residual Risks
In the design of the unit, every measure was taken to protect personnel
from potential danger. However, some residual risks can not be avoided.
Personnel should be aware of the following:
SRisk of burns! The application head is hot.
SRisk of burns! The hot melt adhesive that comes out of the nozzle is hot.
SRisk of burns when connecting and disconnecting heated hoses.
SRisk of burns when conducting maintenance and repair work for which
the application head must be heated up.
SInhalation of potentially hazardous hot melt adhesive vapors.
Note on Manual
SThe position numbers in the illustrations do not correspond to the
position numbers in the technical drawings and parts lists.
SThe illustrations show only the essential components of the application
head. All other components and details can be found in the included
technical drawings (Refer to Parts List).

Description of Components / Functioning (contd.)
Solenoid valve
NOTE: The solenoid valves may only be triggered or activated when the
application head has been heated up! Failure to observe may cause
damage to the nozzle stem seals in the control modules.
The solenoid valves are operated by an electronic control unit that ensures
that the solenoid valves open and close at the right times.
Control Module
The control module precisely opens and closes the adhesive supply to the
nozzle by pneumatically raising or lowering the nozzle stem. A compression
spring ensures that the application nozzle is closed when pressure drops,
preventing adhesive from being applied.
Heating
The application head is heated with electrical heater cartridges. The
temperature is continuously measured by temperature sensors and is
controlled with electronic temperature controllers.
Temperature controllers are not part of the application head.
ID Plate
The ID plate displays the following information:

Serial number
Operating voltage (V = Volt)

WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks.
Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all other
related documentation.
Unpacking
Unpack carefully. Then check for any damage caused during shipping.
Reuse packaging materials or dispose of properly according to local
regulations.
Transport
The application head is a high precision, valuable part. Handle very
carefully! Protect the nozzle from damage.
Storage
Do not store outside! Protect from humidity and dust. Do not lay application
head on the nozzle. Protect the nozzle from damage.
Disposal
When your Nordson product has exhausted its purpose and/or is no longer
needed, dispose of it properly according to local regulations.
Installation
When installing the application head, the following points should be
observed in order to avoid unnecessary effort later.
SProtect from humidity, vibrations, dust and drafts.
SEnsure access to parts relevant for maintenance and operation.
SInstall/attach the application head to/in the parent machine with the
mounting bracket. To achieve optimum adhesive application, during
assembly ensure that the distance and, when appropriate, the angle
between the nozzle and the substrate can be varied.
SWhen installing the application head, ensure that cables, air hoses, and
heated hoses can not be bent, pinched, torn off or otherwise damaged.

Exhausting Adhesive Vapors
Ensure that adhesive vapors do not exceed the prescribed limits. Exhaust
adhesive vapors when necessary. Provide sufficient ventilation of the
location where the application head is installed.
Electrical Connections
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Failure to observe may result in
personal injury, death, or equipment damage.
Laying Cable
WARNING: Do not pinch cables and check regularly for damage. Replace
damaged cables immediately!
Electrically Connecting Application Head
The application head is connected electrically by inserting the plugs into the
corresponding receptacle of the melter or a terminal box. Secure the plug
with the clamp if necessary.
Connecting Solenoid Valves
Depending on the specific design of the hot melt application system, the
solenoid valves on the control modules are controlled either by an external
power supply, e.g. control unit, or through the solenoid valve control leads of
the heated hose. Secure the plug with the clamp if necessary.
NOTE: Observe the voltage stated on the ID plate of the solenoid valve.

Compressed Air
Nordson recommends using dry, controlled and non-lubricated compressed
air.
Operating with Non-lubricated Compressed Air
When an application head is connected to a compressed air system in
which the compressed air has previously been lubricated, simply ceasing to
lubricate the air is not sufficient. The oil remaining in the compressed air
supply will reach the solenoid valves and the control modules and wash out
the lubricant/oil from these parts, substantially decreasing the lifetime of the
units.
NOTE: It must be ensured that the compressed air supply to the application
heads has been converted to absolutely non-lubricated operation.
NOTE: No oil from a possible defective compressor may be permitted to
penetrate the compressed air supply.
NOTE: Nordson will assume no warranty/liability for damage resulting from
unpermitted, temporary lubrication.
Conditioning Compressed Air
The quality of the compressed air must be at least class 2 as stipulated by
ISO 8573−1. This means:
SMax. particle size 1 mm
SMax. particle density 1 mg/m3
SMax. pressure dewpoint −40 °C / −40 °F
SMax. oil concentration 0.1mg/m3.
Pneumatic Connections
1. Connect customer’s air supply to to the inlet of the air conditioning unit.
Maximum air pressure:
10 bar 1 MPa 145 psi
2. Connect control modules to the air conditioning unit.
3. Set control air pressure:
Approx. 5 to 6 bar Approx. 0.5 to 0.6 MPa Approx. 72.5 to 87 psi
NOTE: The exact pressure must be determined for each application.

Connecting Heated Hoses
WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear heat-protective gloves.
Connecting
If cold adhesive can be found in the hose connection (1) and/or hose fitting
(2), these components must be heated until the adhesive softens (approx.
80 _C, 176_F).
1. First connect the hose (3) electrically to the unit.
2. Heat the unit and hose to approx. 80 _C (176 _F).
3. Screw the heated hose onto the unit.

Disconnecting
Relieving Pressure
1. Set motor speed(s) to 0 min-1 (rpm); switch off motor(s).
2. Place a container under the nozzle(s) of the application head.
3. Trigger the solenoid valves electrically or manually. Repeat this
procedure until no more adhesive flows out.
4. Dispose of adhesive properly according to local regulations.
Second Open-jawed Wrench
Use a second open-jawed wrench when connecting and disconnecting the
heated hose. This prevents the hose connection from turning.

Operation

Triggering Solenoid Valve
CAUTION: Trigger the solenoid valves only when the application head is
heated to operating temperature!
Setting Temperatures
NOTE: The temperature setting is determined by the processing
temperature prescribed by the adhesive supplier. The maximum operating
temperature of the product described here may not be exceeded.
The application head temperature required is set on the melter.
The basis for temperature selections are the values stipulated by the hot
melt manufacturer.
Nordson will assume no warranty or liability for damage resulting from
incorrect temperature settings.
Setting Control Air Pressure
The control air pressure is set to suit each application on an air conditioning
unit. The air conditioning unit with pressure control valve is not part of the
application head.
Set control air pressure:
5 to 6 bar 0.5 to 0.6 MPa 72.5 to 87 psi
NOTE: The maximum control air pressure may not be exceeded.
The exact pressure must be determined for each application.

Maintenance

NOTE: Maintenance is an important preventive measure for maintaining
operating safety and extending the lifetime of the unit. It should not be
neglected under any circumstances.
Relieving Pressure
WARNING: System and adhesive pressurized. Before removing heated
hoses and the hot melt application heads, relieve system pressure. Failure
to observe can result in serious burns.
WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear heat-protective gloves.
1. Set motor speed of the unit feeding the hot melt adhesive to 0 min-1;
switch off motor(s).
2. Place a container under the nozzle of the application head.
3. Activate the solenoid valves electrically or manually. Repeat this
procedure until no more adhesive flows out.
4. Reuse adhesive or dispose of properly according to local regulations.

Visual Inspection for External Damage
CAUTION: When damaged parts pose a risk to the operational safety of
the unit and/or safety of personnel, switch off the unit and have the
damaged parts replaced by qualified personnel. Use only original Nordson
spare parts.
External Cleaning
External cleaning prevents impurities created during production from
causing the unit to malfunction.
Always follow manufacturer’s instructions when using cleaning agents!
1. Heat cold application head electrically or with a hot air fan until the
adhesive is liquid.
2. Thoroughly remove warm adhesive with a cleaning agent and/or a soft
cloth.
3. Remove dust, fluffs, etc. with a vacuum cleaner or a soft, lint-free cloth.
CAUTION: Do not damage or remove warning labels. Damaged or
removed warning labels must be replaced by new ones.
Inspecting Control Module
If adhesive escapes, the internal O-rings have worn and the control module
must be replaced.

Replacing Control Module
WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear heat-protective gloves.
Nordson recommends keeping control modules on hand to avoid
interruptions in production (Refer to Spare Parts List).
1. Relieve pressure.
2. Release air connection and electrical connection.
3. Release screws and extract control module from warm application head.
4. Insert new control module; tighten screws crosswise.
5. Re-connect air and electrical connection.
Cleaning Nozzle
WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear heat-protective gloves.
Nordson recommends keeping nozzles on hand to avoid interruptions in
production (Refer to Spare Parts List).
1. Unscrew nozzle from application head.
2. Clean nozzle with a cleaning agent or a soft cloth.
3. Inspect nozzle for damage, replace if necessary
4. Screw clean nozzle onto the application head again.

Introduction
Troubleshooting tables are intended as an orientation for qualified
personnel. They cannot, however, replace targeted troubleshooting with the
aid of wiring diagrams and measuring instruments. They also do not include
all possible problems, only those which most typically occur.
The following problems are not included in the troubleshooting tables:
SFaults in installation
SFaults in operation
SDefective cables
SLoose plug and screw connections
In the column Corrective action, the remark that defective parts should be
replaced is generally not included.
