1. INTRODUCTION
The J4 RTS motor is designed to drive all types of external venetian blind.

2. SAFETY
2.1. Safety and responsibility
- The motor, the torque and the operating time must be adjusted according to the complete installation.
- Only Somfy original accessories should be used (adapters, brackets, connectors, power cable, etc.).
- Fitting, testing, commissioning and repair of the installation must only be carried out by qualied
personnel.
- Correct operation of the installation is only guaranteed if the installation and assembly have been
carried out according to best practices, if the electrical supply is adequate and if maintenance is
carried out.
- The installer must also comply with the current standards and legislation in the country in which
the product is being installed, and inform his customers of the usage and maintenance conditions
relevant to the product.
- The moving parts of the motors must be protected if operating at less than 2.50 m from the ground
or another surface.
- The installation must not be used if it shows any signs of damage (for example wear, damaged
cables and springs or ill adjusted end limits).
- The installation must be protected from all unauthorised use. Take preventive measures to avoid
any spurious operation.
- Children must be supervised to ensure they do not play with the equipment. Keep remote controls
out of the reach of children.
- This equipment is not intended for use by persons (including children) with impaired physical or
mental capacities or those without the required knowledge or experience unless supervised by a
person responsible for their safety.
- Disconnect all the connection cables from the power supply before operating on the installation.
- Do not use the installation if operations (window cleaning for example) are being carried out nearby.
- Observe the assembly and use guidelines, in particular the safety instructions from the manufac-
turer of the device to be used.

2.2. Specic safety advice
In addition to the safety instructions described in this guide, be sure to also observe the
instructions set out in the attached document "Safety instructions to follow and keep".

blind before performing any service operation in the
vicinity.
To avoid damaging the product:

3. INSTALLATION
• Screw the 2 adaptors (1) using 2 M3x8 bolts (2) on
the motor shaft.
FTightening torque = 1.1 Nm
• Connect the connection cable (3) to the motor.
Ensure that the cable does not pass over a rotating part
of the motor or mechanism.
• Compress the edge of the head rail (4) into the motor
zone.
• Insert the motor into the head rail (4).
• Using the clips (5), attach the motor in the head rail
(4) above the small acoustic tapes (6a).
• The shaft can be fitted into the adapter using a
headless screw (7).
If the tension of the clips (5) is insufcient, it is possible
to stick up to 3 small acoustic tapes (6a) one on top of
the other.
Installation with external clips
• Screw the 2 adaptors (1) using 2 M3x8 bolts (2) on
the motor shaft.
FTightening torque = 1.1 Nm
• Connect the connection cable (3) to the motor.
Ensure that the cable does not pass over
a rotating part of the motor or mechanism.
• Insert the motor into the head rail (4).
• Using the clips (5), attach the motor in the head rail
(4) above the small acoustic tapes (6a).
• The shaft can be fitted into the adapter using a
headless screw (7).

Installation with external clips
• Screw the 2 adaptors (1) using 2 M3x8 bolts (2) on

a rotating part of the motor or mechanism.
• Insert the motor into the head rail (4).

(4) above the small acoustic tapes (6a).
• The shaft can be fitted into the adapter using a
headless screw (7)
Installation with internal clips
• Screw the 2 adaptors (1) using 2 M3x8 bolts (2) on
the motor shaft.
FTightening torque = 1.1 Nm
• Connect the connection cable (3) to the motor.
Ensure that the cable does not pass over
a rotating part of the motor or mechanism.
• Insert the motor into the head rail (4).
• Using the clips (5), attach the motor in the head rail (4).
• The shaft can be fitted into the adapter using a
headless screw (7).
The internal clips cannot be used with J418 motors
(J4 motors with a torque of 18 Nm).

Installation with J406/J410 motors (torque of 6 or
10 Nm)
• Screw the 2 adaptors (1) using 2 M3 x 8 bolts (2) on
the motor shaft.
FTightening torque = 1.1 Nm
• Connect the connection cable (3) to the motor.
Ensure that the cable does not pass over
a rotating part of the motor or mechanism.
• Fit the two head rail adaptors (8) on the motor.
• Insert the motor into the head rail (4).
• Using the clip (5), attach the motor in the head rail (4).
• The shaft can be fitted into the adapter using a
headless screw (7).
For motors with torque greater than 10 Nm
• The additional clamp must be attached with a new
bolt -> tightening torque ≤ 4 Nm.

Switch on the power and follow procedure "a" or "b",
depending on the blind's reaction:
a) The E.V.B. moves briefly
The end limits are set and no Somfy control point has
been programmed.

local control point".

Press the Up or Down button and follow procedure
"c" or "d" depending on the blind's
reaction:

5.2. Pre-programming the Somfy local control point
The guide only describes commissioning using a Telis MOD/VAR type Somfy local control point. For
commissioning using any other Somfy local control point, refer to the corresponding guide.
5.1. Identifying setting steps already completed
• Press the Up and Down buttons simultaneously.
The E.V.B. moves briey; the Somfy local control point has
been pre-programmed into the motor.

Setting the end limits

• Press the Up button:
a) If the E.V.B. raises, the direction of rotation is correct:
go to the section entitled "Setting the end limits".
b) If the E.V.B. lowers, the direction of rotation is incorrect:
press the "my" button until the E.V.B. moves; the direction
of rotation has been modied.
• Press the Up button to check the direction of rotation.
5.3. Checking the motor's direction of rotation
• The J4 RTS motor is factory set to operate with a type 1
E.V.B.. However, the user can select the operating mode
for either a type 1 or type 3 E.V.B..
• Press the Up and "my" buttons to switch between operating
modes.
If the motor switches from type 1 to type 3 operation, the
E.V.B. moves briey at slow speed.
If the motor switches from type 3 to type 1 operation, the
E.V.B. moves briey at normal speed.
E.V.B. Type 1: The slats are raised and lowered using
the cord, and angled using the scale.
E.V.B. Type 3: The slats are raised, lowered and
angled using a chain hidden inside the slides.
If the type 3 operating mode is selected and
adjustment is in automatic mode, check that the
apron's upper slat activates the "mushroom" in
the upper end limit position to prevent damage
to the product.

Check that your J4 RTS actuator has been assembled in the blind in the lowered position with
the slats closed.
5.5. Setting the end limits
5.5.1. End limit (automatic adjustment)
• Briey press the PROG button on the pre-programmed
control: the E.V.B. moves briey, the control point is
programmed.
• The upper end limit is set by pressing the "mushroom".
• Go to the section entitled "Operation".
5.5.2. Upper end limit (manual adjustment)
• Press the Up and Down buttons for 5 seconds the E.V.B.
moves briey.
• Press the Up button.
The E.V.B. rotates in the up direction. Continue to press
the Up button until the desired upper end limit is reached
(the E.V.B. continues to be raised after the control point
button has been pressed for 2 seconds).
• Stop the E.V.B. in the desired position (the thumbwheel on
the Telis MOD/VAR type local control point can be used
to set the desired position) using the stop function on the
"mushroom".
• If the "mushroom" is not activated during setting, press
the Down button (the E.V.B. moves briey to conrm
programming). If the "mushroom" is activated when the
upper end limit is set, the position is programmed just
below the "mushroom".

5.5.3. Lower end limit (manual adjustment)
• Press the Up and Down buttons for 5 seconds the blind
moves briey.
• Press the Down button.
The E.V.B. rotates in the down direction. Continue to press
the Down button until the desired lower end limit is reached
(the E.V.B. continues to be lowered after the control point
button has been pressed for 2 seconds).
• Stop the E.V.B. in the desired position (the thumbwheel on
the Telis MOD/VAR local control point can be used to set
the desired position precisely).
• Press the Up button (the E.V.B. moves briey to conrm
programming).
5.6. Programming the rst Somfy local control point
5.6.1. Using a pre-programmed Somfy local control
point
Briey press the PROG button on this control
point: the E.V.B. moves briey,
the control point has been programmed.
5.6.2. After a power cut
• Press the Up and Down buttons on the new
control point simultaneously until the blind moves.
• Briey press the PROG button on this control
point: the E.V.B. moves briey; the control point
has been programmed.
5.7. Checking the settings
Check the settings of the upper and lower end limits using the Somfy local control point.

6. OPERATING
6.1. Standard operation
To use the favourite (my) position: Briey press the "my"
button: the E.V.B. starts to move, then stops and angles
the slats in accordance with the angle programmed for the
favourite (my) position.
6.1.2. STOP function
The E.V.B. is moving.
Briey press the "my" button: the E.V.B. stops
automatically.
6.1.1. Favourite position (my)
Besides the upper and lower positions, an intermediate position known as the "favourite
position (my)" may be programmed in the motor. The “my” favourite position is pre-set in the
factory, and corresponds to the “slats lowered, sun protection” position.
To modify or delete the favourite position (my), see the section entitled "Modifying settings".
6.1.3. Up and Down buttons
• On a Telis MOD/VAR type local control, briey pressing
the Up or Down button raises or lowers the E.V.B. fully.
The thumbwheel is used to angle the slats.
• On a standard Telis type local control, 2 modes are
available: EU mode and US mode.
The J4 RTS motor is factory set to operate in US mode
In US mode, briey pressing the Up or Down button raises
or lowers the E.V.B. fully. pressing and holding the Up or
Down button angles the slats.
In EU mode, pressing and holding the Up or Down button
raises or lowers the E.V.B. fully. briey pressing the Up or
Down button angles the slats.

6.1.4. Selecting the mode. (EU mode or US mode)
• The J4 RTS motor is factory set to operate in US mode.
However, the user can choose between the EU and US
modes.
• Press the Up and Down buttons for 5 seconds the E.V.B.
moves briey.
• To conrm the new mode, press and hold the "my" and
Down buttons for 2 seconds: the blind moves briey.

7.1.3. Programming the “my” position
In the “my” position, press and hold the “my” button for 5
seconds: the E.V.B. moves briey and the "my" position
has been programmed.
7.1.4. Deleting the favourite (my) position
• Press the Down button (the E.V.B. moves to the lowered
position with the slats closed).
• Press and hold the "my" and Up buttons for 2 seconds: the
slats will tilt to the programmed “My” position.
• Press and hold the "my" and Up buttons for 5 seconds: the
E.V.B. moves briey; the "my" position is deleted (the "my"
button now works only as a "STOP" button. If using a sun
sensor, the E.V.B. moves to the lowered position when the
sun appears).
7. ADDITIONAL SETTINGS
7.1. Favourite position (my)
7.1.1. Modifying/Activating the favourite (my) position
• Press the Down button (the E.V.B. moves to the lowered
position with the slats closed).
• Press and hold the "my" and Up buttons for 2 seconds (the
slats tilt to the pre-programmed "my" position).
• Position the slats as required, using the thumbwheel of
the RTS remote control to increase or decrease the slat
angle.
Go to the section entitled "Testing the my position" or
"Programming the my position".
7.1.2. Testing the “my” position (optional step)
• Briey press the "my" button:
On a type 1 E.V.B., the slats tilt to the closed position then
move to the newly set "my" position.
On a type 3 E.V.B., the slats move back to the horizontal
position then move to the newly set "my" position.

7.2.2. Adding/Deleting an RTS sensor
• Find an RTS control point programmed in the motor.
• Press the PROG button on the RTS control point (A) until
the E.V.B. moves briey: the motor is in programming
mode.
• Press the PROG button on the RTS sensor (C) briey. The
E.V.B. moves briey.
The RTS sensor is programmed or deleted from the
motor.
7.2.3. Deleting all the RTS sensors
• Find an RTS control point programmed in the motor.
• Press the PROG button on the RTS control point (A) until
the E.V.B. moves briey: the motor is in programming
mode.
• Press and hold the PROG button on the RTS sensor (C)
for 7 seconds. The E.V.B. moves briey twice.
The RTS sensors are deleted from the motor.

E.V.B. is raised to the "sun disappearing" position.
• Position the slats as desired using the thumbwheel (Mod/
Var RTS remote control) or by pressing the Up and Down
buttons on a paired or temporarily assigned Mod/Var RTS
remote control to increase or reduce the slat angle.
7.3.2. Programming the “sun disappearing” position
In the "sun disappearing" position, press and hold the "my"
button on a paired RTS remote control for 5 seconds: the
E.V.B. moves briey; the "sun disappearing" position has
been programmed.
7.3.3. Deleting the "sun disappearing" position
• Press the "my" button: the blind starts to move then stops
in the favourite (my) position.
• Press and hold the "my" and Up buttons for 2 seconds: the
E.V.B. is raised to the "sun disappearing" position.
• Press and hold the "my" and Up buttons for 5 seconds:
the E.V.B. moves briey; the "sun disappearing" position
is activated or deleted.
7.3.4. Activating and Deactivating the "privacy position"
the "privacy position" locks the E.V.B. in position if the sun
disappears.
• Press the "my" button: the E.V.B. starts to move then stops
in the favourite (my) position.
• Press and hold the "my" and Down buttons for 5 seconds:
the E.V.B. moves briey; it will not change position when
the sun disappears.
7.3. Sun disappearing position (SDP)
7.3.1. Modifying/Activating the "sun disappearing" position
Note: The "sun disappearing" position is the position the slats adopt when the sun is
disappearing. This function requires the use of a sun sensor. The "sun disappearing" position
is preset in the factory but not activated, and corresponds to the "slats horizontal" position. It is
not possible to modify the “sun disappearing” position if the “my” position has been deleted.

7.4. Adjusting the tilt angle of the slats in accordance with the thumbwheel
notches.
• Move the E.V.B. to a position other than the end limits.
• Press and hold the "my" and Down buttons for 5
seconds: the E.V.B. moves briey.
• Press the Up button to increase the tilt angle of the slats
in accordance with the thumbwheel notches, or press
the Down button to reduce this angle. The presses are
controlled directly using the thumbwheel.
• To conrm the tilt angle of the slats, press and hold the
“my” button for 5 seconds: the E.V.B. moves briey.
7.6. Modifying the motor's direction of rotation
• Move the E.V.B. to a position other than the end limits.
• Press the Up and Down buttons for 5 seconds the E.V.B.
moves briey.
• To conrm the motor's new direction of rotation, press
and hold the "my" button for 2 seconds: the E.V.B.
moves briey; the motor's direction of rotation has been
changed.
7.5. Modifying the thumbwheel's direction of rotation.
• Move the E.V.B. to a position other than the end limits.
• Press the Up and Down buttons for 5 seconds the E.V.B.
moves briey.
• To conrm the thumbwheel's new direction of rotation,
press and hold the Up, "my" and Down buttons for 2
seconds: the E.V.B. moves briey; the thumbwheel's
direction of rotation has been changed.

7.7. Modifying the end limits
7.7.1. Modifying the upper end limit
• Place the E.V.B. in the intermediate position.
• Press the Up and Down buttons for 5 seconds the
E.V.B.moves briey.
• Press the Up button.
The E.V.B. rotates in the up direction. Continue to press
the Up button until the desired upper end limit is reached
(the E.V.B. continues to be raised after the control point
button has been pressed for 2 seconds).
• Stop the E.V.B. in the desired position (the thumbwheel on
the Telis MOD/VAR type local control point can be used
to set the desired position) using the stop function on the
"mushroom".
• If the "mushroom" is not activated during setting, press
the Down button (the E.V.B. moves briey to conrm
programming).
If the "mushroom" is activated when the upper end limit is
set, the position is programmed a few millimetres below
the "mushroom".
7.7.2. Modifying the lower end limit
• Place the E.V.B. in the intermediate position.
• Press the Up and Down buttons for 5 seconds the
E.V.B.moves briey.
• Press the Down button.
The E.V.B. rotates in the down direction. Continue to press
the Down button until the desired lower end limit is reached
(the E.V.B. continues to be lowered after the control point
button has been pressed for 3 seconds).
• Stop the E.V.B. in the desired position (the thumbwheel on
the Telis MOD/VAR local control point can be used to set
the desired position precisely). With a type 3 EVB, stop the
EVB before the desired position, and adjust the limit with
the thumbwheel of the local control point.
• Press the Up button (the blind moves briey to conrm
programming).

8. TIPS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
8.1. Questions on the J4 RTS?
Observations Possible causes Solutions
The E.V.B. does
not operate. The wiring is incorrect. Check the wiring and modify it if
necessary.
The motor is in heat protection mode. Wait until the motor cools down.
An incorrect cable has been used. Check the cable and ensure it has 3
strands.
The Somfy control battery is weak. Check whether the battery is weak and
replace it if necessary.
The control point is not compatible. Check for compatibility and replace the
control point if necessary.
The Somfy control point used has not
been programmed into the motor. Use a programmed control point or program this control point.
The E.V.B. stops
too early. The end limits have been incorrectly
set. Readjust the end limits.
I can't tilt the slats
easily The remote control is not compatible Pair then use a Telis Mod/VAR RTS remote
control
8.2. Replacing a lost or broken Somfy control point
This reset deletes all control points, however,
it does not delete the sensors and the favourite
position.
Only switch off the power for the motor to be reset.
• Place the E.V.B. in the intermediate position
(if possible).
• Cut the power supply for 2 seconds.
• Next:
Switch the power supply back on for 5 to 15
seconds.
Cut the power supply for 2 seconds.
Switch the power supply back on: the E.V.B.
starts to move for a few seconds.
• or
Switch the mains power supply back on.
Wait for 5s then press·and·hold·the·»mushroo
m»·for·10·seconds.

If the E.V.B. is at the upper or lower end limit, it will

8.3. Restoring the original conguration
This reset deletes all control points, all the sensors
and all the end limit settings, and resets the motor's
direction of rotation and favourite position (my).
Only switch off the power for the motor to be
reset
• Place the E.V.B. in the intermediate position
(if possible).
• Cut the power supply for 2 seconds.
• Next:
Switch the power supply back on for 5 to 15
seconds.
Cut the power supply for 2 seconds.
Switch the power supply back on: the E.V.B.
starts to move for a few seconds.
• or
Switch the mains power supply back on.
Wait for 5s then press·and·hold·the·»mushroo
m»·for·10·seconds.
the E.V.B. moves briey.
If the E.V.B. is at the upper or lower end limit, it will
move briey.
• Hold down the PROG button: the E.V.B. will move
once then again a few moments later. The motor
is congured with the factory settings.
Repeat the procedures from the "Commissioning"
section
