1About this product
The Flex Height-Adjustable Desk (Flex
Collection Desk) office furniture product line by
Steelcase is subject to continuous quality control in
its manufacture and distribution. This ensures fault-
free functionality.
The products are designed and manufactured
according to the state of the art (in Germany at the
time of construction) and recognised safety-relevant
rules; however, hazards may still arise. Please follow
the respective safety-relevant information.
Malfunctions that could impair safety must be
eliminated immediately. We reserve the right to
make technical changes to the products for technical
reasons.
Steelcase applies a quality management system that
meets the requirements of DIN EN ISO 9001.
The Flex Height-Adjustable Desk with Simple
Touch control panel bears the CE mark and is
GS-qualified.
The Flex Height-Adjustable Desk with Active
Touch control panel bears the CE mark but is
not GS-qualified.
The electric height adjustment unit type plate is
located on the controller housing, on the columns,
and under the desktop.
1.1 Intended use
The Flex Height-Adjustable Desk is exclusively
designed for use as office furniture. Any other use, or
use beyond the specified intended use is considered
improper use.
Intended use also includes following all
instructions in the user's manual.
1.1.1 Foreseeable misuse
Improper use of the product may result in dangers to
life and limb as well as property damage. For this
reason, improper use is prohibited. In case of
improper use, Steelcase assumes no liability for any
damage that may occur and does not guarantee that
the components will function properly.
Possible improper use includes:
■Use for the lifting of loads.
■Use as a climbing aid.
■Permanent storage surface for objects with a
total weight of more than 75 kg.
■Outdoor use.
■Use as a means of transport
■Use in damp rooms.
This list does not claim to be exhaustive.
1.1.2 Users with limitations
Injuries to persons or damage to the
desk are possible!
This desk can be used by children 8
years of age and older, as well as by
persons with reduced physical, sensory,
or mental capabilities, or lack of
experience and knowledge, if they are
supervised, or have been instructed in
the safe use of the desk, and
understand the dangers associated with
use of the desk.
Children are not allowed to play with the
device.
Children may not carry out cleaning
tasks or user's maintenance tasks.

2.1 Safety-relevant information
The Flex Height-Adjustable Desk should only be
used and operated in faultless condition and in
compliance with the instructions in the operating
manual.
The user of the Flex Height-Adjustable Desk is
obligated to always comply with the safety
instructions and warnings in this operating manual.
In addition to the user's manual, the general and
local regulations on accident prevention and
environmental protection must be made available
and followed.
2.2 Safety-relevant information
and warnings
To prevent personal injury and damage to property,
this Bedienungsanleitung contains warnings at the
appropriate locations. The symbols and signal words
have the following meaning:

Height-adjustable desks ensure mobility and
wellness; they enable users to change their posture
and their location, depending on their work
requirements. The optional integrated power supply
includes a single cable, which is routed out of the
desk to facilitate movement.

Type plates are located on the controller housing, on
the columns and under the desktop.
Type plate: symbols – explanation
Double insulation. Double insulated
cables minimise the risk of electrical
shock.
For indoor use. Indicates that
placing the product outdoors is not

CE marking. Used to symbolise the
conformity of the product with the
applicable requirements that the
European Community places on the
manufacturer.
Recycling symbol. Used to indicate
conformity with the regulations for
Waste Electric and Electronic
Equipment (WEEE) and the Electrical
and Electronics Equipment Act
(ElektroG). Electrical and electronic
products must be disposed of
separately from household waste at
the end of their service lives.
The CE marking is located on the underside of the
desktop and can be viewed at any time.
3.2 Components
The Flex Height-Adjustable Desk essentially
consists of the following components (the variants
are described in the respective section):
■The desktop is available in melamine (25 mm
thick), with a wood veneer surface (25 mm
thick), a plywood core with plywood surface (24
mm thick) or a plywood core with linoleum
surface (27 mm thick).
■A radial edge with a 3 mm edge profile is
available, if melamine, wood veneer, plywood
and plywood with linoleum surface have been
selected.
■Single-level height-adjustable base that can be
adjusted from 720 mm to 1200 mm in height.
■Two-level height adjustable base that can be
adjusted from 650 mm to 1250 mm in height.
■The lift column is controlled via a central control
box for synchronisation. The columns are
precisely balanced to minimise surface vibration.
■The Simple Touch controller adjusts the height of
the desk at 38 mm per second.
■The Active Touch controller comes standard and
includes a digital display, two preset buttons and
reminders of active movement postures.

3.3 Factory setting on delivery

With the variants, "Single-level height-
adjustable base and "Two-level height-
adjustable base, you can change these
settings to meet your needs. The
corresponding descriptions are available
under 5 Operating and adjusting .
3.4 Accessories
A wide range of accessories is available in various
materials, surface treatments and dimensions. Please
follow the instructions for using components and
accessories (see 5 Operating and adjusting ).
The following accessories are available for the
Flex Height-Adjustable Desk:
■CPU-holder: Steel, powder-coated with epoxy
resin paint; adapter natural aluminium, bolted on
the cantilever arm and horizontal beam,
inside/outside and right/left position possible,
max load: 15 kg.
■Monitor holders: Compatible with the product
FSMA, FSMA EVO and PLURIO. Versions with C-
clamps must be mounted on top of the desktop,
and must be ordered separately –see price list
for monitor holders.
■Power Hub: Power supply unit on the desk with
aluminium housing and black end caps, with C-
clamp and 1 m extension cord for the Flex
Height-Adjustable Desk. This power supply
solution includes either 2 power outlets and 2
USB-A connections, or 2 power outlets only.
■Organisation walls – On-Desk Screen:
Curved organisation walls on the desk offer the
user privacy for height-adjustable desks and
tables. In addition, the organisation wall can be
used as a pinboard.
Divisio Frameless Screen:
The Divisio Frameless Screen with C-clamp
fastening is compatible with the Flex Height-
Adjustable Desk. The organisation wall must be
mounted on the top side of the desktop, and it
must be ordered separately –see the price list
for the Divisio Frameless Screen.

The control panel with the “up” and “down”
functions is usually located on the right, on the
underside of the desktop.

Danger of crushing and shearing!
Body parts or objects could be crushed or sheared off as a result of the electrical
height adjustment process.
Maintain sufficient lateral clearance (at least 25 mm) to all surrounding objects, walls, etc.
throughout the lifting range.
Set up the desk in such a manner that sufficient space is ensured for the lift movement and
for the realisation of maintenance tasks.

4.1 Safety-relevant information
Risk of injury or damage!
The fastening screws could tear if the desk
is lifted by the desktop or the attached
components.
Always take hold of the desk at the
underframe to transport or move it.
4.2 Interim storage
If you want to store the desk temporarily before
installation, the following conditions must be met:
■Intact transport packaging
■The floor must have sufficient load-bearing
capacity
■Dry floor
■Level placement surface
■Temperature range: +10 °C to +40 °C.
■Max. rel. humidity: 80 %
4.3 Checking the delivery
contents
After unpacking, check the product immediately for
damage sustained during transportation and for
completeness; inform the manufacturer of any
damage as soon as possible.
4.4 Disposing of the packaging
material
The packaging includes the following:
■Outer packaging made of cardboard
■Shrink film made of polyethylene (PE)
■Bubble wrap made of polyethylene (PE)
■Edge protectors made of cardboard or
polyethylene (PE)
■Corner protectors made of polyethylene (PE).
These materials are recyclable. If assembled by
Steelcase or an assembly company authorised by
Steelcase, the manufacturer will dispose of the
packaging. If you assemble the desk yourself, please
ensure that the packaging material is correctly sorted
by type and returned to the recycling process.
4.5 Assembly
Please comply with the provided assembly
instructions when assembling the Flex Height-
Adjustable Desk.
Steelcase recommends having the retailer
or an assembly company assemble the
furniture.
Attaching accessories
For attaching accessories, please follow the attached
assembly instructions.
4.5.1 Disassembling the desk
The desk can be dismantled into its pre-assembled
components. Disassembling should be carried out by
skilled and qualified personnel only. Follow the
separate disassembly instructions.
After disassembling the desk, for example for
transport reasons:

Reassemble the two side frames only with the
appropriate desktop cross-member of the same
desk.
ATTENTION
Risk of damage to lift mechanism!
Values stored in the controller
do not match the settings of
another desk.
4.5.2 Re-assembly
For the assembly, follow the separate assembly
instructions.
4.6 Electrical connection
Check the electrical equipment of the
desk. Rectify defects such as loose
connections or damaged cables
immediately.

Attach or detach connectors only when
the equipment is de-energised.
The plug of the desk must be easily
accessible at all times.

4.7 Setting up the desk
Setup and use of the product requires detailed
planning. For this Steelcase offers the services of a
separate planning department.
The partially-assembled units of the Flex Height-
Adjustable Desk are usually supplied via retailers or
directly from the manufacturer.
The installation location must meet the following
requirements:
■The floor must have sufficient load-bearing
capacity
■Level placement surface
■Temperature range: +5 °C to +40 °C.
■Max. rel. humidity: 80 %
4.8 Levelling
There is an adjustment wheel on each foot of the
desk that can be used to raise the desktop as much
as 1.0 cm to compensate for unevenness of the floor.
For a desk that has already been assembled: before
levelling, remove any objects from the desktop.

5.1 Safety-relevant information
The Flex Height-Adjustable Desk should only be
used and operated in faultless condition and in
compliance with the instructions in the operating
manual.
Before changing the height of the desk, ensure that:
■The desktop is level. If the floor is uneven, align
the desktop via the adjusting wheel on the feet.
■That no persons or objects (e.g. open doors or
windows) are in the lifting range, or protrude
into the lifting range.
■No one is on the desk.
■The maximum permissible load-carrying capacity
of the desk is not exceeded.
Danger due to voltage!
Contact with voltage can cause severe
injury or death due to electric shock!
Attach or detach
connectors only when the
equipment is de-
energised.
Do not open the housings
of the following
components:
–Controller
–Columns
–Control panel
Danger due to voltage!
The metal parts of the desk
can become energised if live
cables and connections are
damaged.
Do not earth electrical devices on the
desk frame.
Risk of injury or damage!
When loading the CPU holder with
weight that is higher than the approved
weight, the fastening screws can tear.
Risk of injury or damage!
The fastening screws could tear if the desk
is lifted by the desktop or the attached
components.
Always take hold of the desk at the
underframe to transport or move it.
Ensure that the connecting cables of all
devices on the desk are long enough.
Optimum desktop height
The adjustment to the optimum desktop height
(sitting height) is crucial for the correct sitting
posture at the workstation. The correct desktop
height setting for the workstation can be found in the
workstation analysis (pursuant to the German
Occupational Safety and Health Act, the German VDU
Ordinance, or accident prevention regulations, for
example). See also BGI 650: Screen and office
workstations. Design guidelines.
5.2 Desktop height adjustment
Height adjustment of the Flex Height-Adjustable
Desk occurs via electric motor for all variants.
5.2.1 Variants Lift 1 and Lift 2
The electric motor enables variable vertical desk
adjustment to between 720 mm and 1200 mm (Lift 1
variant) or to between 650 mm und 1250 mm (Lift 2
variant).
Make sure before first use that
■the desk has been assembled correctly;
■the controller is connected to the motor by cable;
■the control panel is connected to the controller;
■all safety-relevant information has been followed.

For the power connection
Insert the mains plug into a power point supply-
ing 220/230 V.
Prior to putting the desk in service, it is
necessary to perform a manual reset.
The instructions for this procedure can be
found in the description of the
corresponding control panel.
5.2.2 Operating panel
Simple Touch operating panel
The control panel is located on the left- or right-hand
side at the underside of the desktop.

Manual reset on Simple Touch operating panel
An end position calibration of the lowest desktop
position must be performed:
■Prior to placing the desk in service
■When the actual desktop position no longer
matches the displayed desktop position.
■When a previously configured motor controller is
used in a different electrically height adjustable
workstation of the same design.
Press the operating panel down-
wards and hold it down until it
reaches the lower end position.
Release the operating panel for 1
second.
Press the operating panel down
again for approx. 5 sec. and hold it.
The desktop moves to the lower end
position and makes a short move-
ment.
Release the operating panel. The
system is now ready for operation.
If the control panel is released before the
process is completed, the manual
resetting process will be interrupted and
must be restarted.
Adjusting the desk height with Simple Touch
operating panel
Before performing the height adjustment, you must
ensure that:
■No one is in the lifting range. No objects (such as
open doors or windows) are in or protrude into
the lifting range.
■There are no objects in the lift range of the lift
column.
■No one is on the desk.
■The maximum permissible load-carrying capacity
of the desk is not exceeded (see 3.1 Technical
data ).
■No heavy loads are on the desktop. Heavy loads
make the height adjustment more difficult.
The desktop is level. If the floor is uneven, align the
desktop with the adjusting screws on the feet.

Ensure that the connecting cables for the
devices on the desk are long enough.
Press the operating panel
downward or upward until the
lower end position / upper end
position (programmed desktop
position) is reached.
A lift movement takes place only:
■As long as the corresponding operating panel is
pressed.
■As long as the maximum load (approx. 75 kg) is
not exceeded.
ATTENTION
Risk of damage to the desktop!
If desktop movement occurs on
one side only or unevenly:
Release the operating panel
immediately to stop the
movement.
Determine the cause using the
fault-finding table (see Error
messages on the display of the
Active Touch operating panel).
Consult a service technician if
necessary.
5.2.3 Active Touch operating panel
The Active Touch operating panel allows the storing
of two positions.

operating panel
Before performing the height adjustment, you must
ensure that:
■The display of the operating panel does not show
an error message (see 6 Faults and
malfunctions ).
■No one is in the lifting range. No objects (such as
open doors or windows) are in or protrude into
the lifting range.
■There are no objects in the lift range of the lift
column.
■No one is on the desk.
■The maximum permissible desk load-carrying
capacity is not exceeded (75kg).
■No heavy loads are on the desktop. Heavy loads
make the height adjustment more difficult.
■The desktop is level. If the floor is uneven, align
the desktop with the adjusting screws on the
feet.
Ensure that the connecting cables of all
devices on the desk are long enough.
Press the operating panel (tog-
gle switch) "up" or "down".
A lift movement takes place only:
•As long as the corresponding operating panel is
pressed.
•As long as the maximum load (approx. 75 kg) is
not exceeded.
•If a pre-programmed height (MEM1 or MEM2)
is reached, the system stops briefly (500ms) and
then continues as long as the operating panel is
pressed.
The desk moves at a speed of approx.
4 cm/s.
ATTENTION
Risk of damage to the desktop!
If desktop movement occurs on one side only
or unevenly:
Release the operating panel
immediately to stop the
movement.
Determine the cause using the
fault-finding table (see 6 Faults
and malfunctions ).
AutoRun operation
With this panel, the desk reaches the
stored height without having to touch the
controls permanently.
Tap the control panel twice in the
direction you want the desktop to
move.
The desktop moves up or down
automatically to the stored desk
position.
To stop the automatic movement,
tap the control panel.
Start indication in the display
If the system is supplied with power, the Steelcase
logo appears for a few seconds when the power is
switched on and disappears again.
Height indication in the display
The desk height is displayed whenever the system is
moved. The increments are displayed in whole
centimetres when the centimetre setting is selected.
In inch (INCH) mode with one decimal place and
increments in 0.1 increments.

Switching the display between centimetres
and inches
A selection can be made to have the height displayed
in centimetres [cm] or inches [inch]. This selection
does not affect the actual height of the desk.
To change the unit displayed, proceed according to
the information in the table below:
Press the position memory
button MEM1 and the
REM button at the same
time
The display switches from
CM to INCH and back
Resetting to factory settings
Press the position
memory buttons MEM1,
MEM2 and the REM but-
ton at the same time
The system resets to the
factory settings.
Setting the displayed desk height
Press the position

Setting the default height
Press the button se-
quence MEM1, MEM2,
MEM1, MEM2
The display shows:
"SELECT", "HEIGHT".
Move up the toggle
switch up or down to ad-
just the standard height.
When the desired height
is reached, wait for two
seconds.
The new standard height
is stored as soon as the
blue light bar fills up.
Setting the memory position
This function is used to save a specific desktop
height. Each position memory button (1, 2) can store
one desktop height. As a result, up to two memory
positions can be entered.
To save a desktop position, proceed as follows:
Move the desktop to the
height you want.
Press MEM1 for memory
position 1.
Press MEM2 for memory
position 2.
When all 3 light bars light up,
the position is saved.
Calling up a memory position
This function is used to set a saved desktop position.
To set a saved desktop position, proceed as follows:
Press the operating panel "up"
or "down".
Deleting the memory position
This function allows you to delete the stored desktop
positions.
To delete a stored desktop position, proceed as
follows:
Press the MEM1 and
MEM2 buttons simulta-
neously.
"PRESET CLEAR" ap-
pears on the display.
The stored heights are
deleted.
Setting the reminder function REM
This feature allows you to set a time when you want
to be reminded to change your position.
To set a saved desktop position, proceed as follows:

Press the REM button and the
display will show the timer logo
and the current memory time.
Press this button to set the
interval for how often you want to
receive a reminder to change
position.
The six intervals are:
- Interval 1: Reminder after 15
minutes of sitting
- Interval 2: Reminder after 30
minutes of sitting
- Interval 3: Reminder after 45
minutes of sitting
- Interval 4: Reminder after 60
minutes of sitting
- Interval 5: Reminder after 75
minutes of sitting
- Interval 6: Reminder after 90
minutes of sitting
When the light bar fills up, the
reminder interval is stored
If no action is taken within 2 minutes
after the reminder, the reminder function
will turn off automatically.
Always have the desk move up or down
until the desired or programmed height is
reached and the desk stops. This ensures
that the desk is horizontally aligned
(level) in the case of a one-sided load.
Bluetooth function und pairing
This function allows you to establish a BLUETOOTH
connection between the desk controller and a mobile
device with Bluetooth function.
Please note that a connection to the desk
can only be established using the
Steelcase Rise App.
To connect, proceed as follows:
Press the MEM2 and
REM buttons simultane-
ously for about 2
seconds.
The Bluetooth symbol
now flashes in the dis-
play, followed by the ID
number of the control
unit.
Once a connection is es-
tablished, the display
shows a larger Bluetooth
symbol and
"CONNECTED".
Error codes
Error codes are always shown on the display with an
"E" for error followed by a number, e.g. "E16". The
most common error codes are also provided with an
extra function such as "E01" "INITIALISE". The
display alternates between a numeric code and a text
message.
The error code remains visible as long as you keep
the toggle switch pressed.
A complete list of error codes is provided in Section
6.
5.3 Changing the location of the
desk
The user can push the Flex Height Adjustable Desk at
any time to quickly and easily adapt to new
workspace concepts.
5.3.1 Locking or releasing the desk
fixation element
To move the desk, the fixation element (desk brake)
must first be released. After moving the desk, the
fixation element (desk brake) must be locked so that
the desk remains fixed in place at the desired
location.

Unscrew the fixation element (turn it clockwise)
(as shown in the Fig.).
The desk can no longer be moved.
Screw in the fixation element (desk brake) (turn
it anti-clockwise) to release.
The desk can now be moved.
5.3.2 Moving the desk
Injury hazard on the desk rollers!
Minor foot injury due to pinching.
Keep your feet away from the rollers.
PLEASE NOTE
Possible floor damage due to the desk
rollers///!
The floor can be scratched or indented.
Check the condition of the floor and
carefully move the desk.
Before moving the desk, ensure the following:
■Move the desk into the lowest height position
■Remove objects that are not fixed in place from
the desk
■For longer movement distances, dismount the
OnDesk Screen accessory from the desk.
■Watch for objects on the floor and carefully push
the desk through doorways to avoid damage.
Moving the desk:
Carefully push the desk in the desired direction.
Desk reaches the desired position.
When the desk has reached the desired
end position, and will not be pushed any
further, the fixation element must always
be locked!

6.1 Safety-relevant information
The following information always applies for resolving
problems:
Danger due to voltage!
Contact with voltage can
result in severe injury or
death due to electric
shock!
Attach or detach connectors only
when the equipment is de-
energised.
Do not open the housings of the
following components:
- Controller
- Columns
- Control panel
ATTENTION
Risk of damage to electrical equipment!
Do not use the mains cable to pull
the plug out of the socket.
Error messages on the display of the Active
Touch operating panel
If faults occur during operation of the Flex Height-
Adjustable Desk, please check whether it is being
operated in accordance with the operating manual.
In most cases, this will help you find and eliminate
the problem.
Some errors that may occur are shown on the display
of the Active Touch operating panel. The "Error"
segment flashes.
The table below should help you to find the cause
and to correct the error or fault.
