This guide provides the instructions to install the Nitrogen Phosphorus Detector
(NPD) in series with the non-destructive Electron Capture Detector (ECD)
already installed on your TRACE GC Ultra.

About This Guide
It provides the instructions to install the Nitrogen Phosphorus Detector (NPD) in
series with the non-destructive Electron Capture Detector (ECD) already installed
on your TRACE GC Ultra.
NOTE For Conventions, Symbols and Costumer Communications, please refer to the TRACE GC
Ultra Operating Manual.
Introduction
The NPD tandem option (stacked configuration) is particularly useful for
confirmation type analyses permitting collection of two detector signals
originated from the same injection.
A particular zero dead volume heated adapter allows for correct sample transfer
from the ECD to the NPD avoiding any condensation and peak broadening.
The upgrade kit contains all the material required to install the NPD detector in
series with the ECD detector:
• NPD Assembly for TRACE
• NPD Control Card
• NPD Standard Outfit
• Heater Adapter
• Transformer for NPD
• DGFC Module for NPD
The NPD must be installed and configured as auxiliary detector.
Who Performs the Installation of the Kit
If, for any reason, the kit is not installed by ThermoFinnigan technical personnel,
you must carefully adhere to the following instructions.

Detector Gases Requirements
This paragraph details the detector gases requirements for NPD.
NPD Detector Gases
Usually NPD requires air and hydrogen as fuel gases and nitrogen or helium as
make-up gas.
In case of NPD Tandem (stacked) configuration, the make-up gas for the NPD
detector is supplied from the ECD make-up gas line. Consequently, any make-up
gas connection is required at the DGFC for NPD. The make-up gas from the ECD
detector can be only nitrogen.
The connections of the detector gases must be performed as described in the
following table:
For further details, refer to Chapters 16 and 19 of the TRACE GC Ultra Operating
Manual.
Transformer for NPD
To supply NPD, the dedicated transformer provided must be installed on the
Power Control Module of the GC.
WARNING! This operation must be carried out by authorized Thermo Fisher Scientific technical
personnel.

Getting Started
This paragraph contains the instruction to install the NPD in series with the ECD.
Before starting, the following preliminary operations must be carried out:
1. Cool the oven and detector base body to room temperature.
2. Close the gas supplies.
3. Turn off the main power on the rear panel of the GC.
4. Disconnect the main power cable from the rear of the GC.
To properly install the NPD tandem upgrade kit, the following sequential
operations must be performed:
• Remove the top, right side and panels of the GC.
• Mount the DGFC for NPD into the GC pneumatic compartment.
• Install the detector control card into the GC electronic compartment (control
unit).
• Mount the transformer for NPD.
• Remount GC panels.
• Mount the NPD on the ECD.
• Restart the GC.
• Configure the transformer.
• Configure the detector.

Follow this instruction to properly install the NPD Tandem Upgrade Kit.

Removing the GC Panels
This operation allows to access the GC upper parts and the electronic
compartment.
Material needed:
• 2-mm Allen wrench
• 3-mm Allen wrench

Remove the GC Top Cover
1. Lift the detector cover off the GC top cover.
2. Open the oven door and unscrew the two top cover fastening screws.
3. Push the cover back about 1 cm and lift it up and off the GC.

Remove the GC Right Side Panel
1. Loosen and remove the screw that secures the right side panel to the right
upper rear corner of the GC by using the 3-mm Allen wrench. Refer to
Figure 1-3.
2. Slide the side panel towards the back of the GC and then tilt the top of the side
panel outwards. Continue to slide the panel towards the rear of the GC.
3. Hold the side panel parallel to the GC, and pull the lower edge of the panel
away from the GC.

Remove the Pneumatic Compartment Panel
1. Loosen and remove the three screw that secures the pneumatic compartment
panel to the rear of the GC by using the 3-mm Allen wrench. Refer to
Figure 1-3.
Remove the GC Rear Panel
1. Locate the six Allen screws that secure the rear panel to the GC. Remove
these screws using the 2-mm Allen wrench. See Figure 1-4.
2. Carefully remove the rear panel of the GC. Be aware that the cooling fan is
attached to the rear panel.
NOTE Pay attention to the positioning of the cooling fan plug, so it can be reconnected in the
same way it was removed.

Mounting the DGFC Module for NPD
The DGFC module for NPD must be installed into the pneumatic compartment
located on the right upper part of the GC rear.
1. Take the heater adapter group provided, shown in Figure 1-5, at place it on the
GC top deck.

2. Guide the 2-lines pre assembled plate through the Aux position slot located on
the front of the pneumatic compartment as shown in Figure 1-6.

3. Push the 2-lines pre assembled plate until it protrudes on the back side of the
pneumatic compartment as shown in Figures 1-7 and 1-8.

4. Connect the 2-line pre assembled plate to the provided allocation position on
the DGFC module and fix it by using the provided screw as shown in
Figure 1-9.

5. Connect the flat cable to the relevant connection as shown in Figure 1-10.

6. Insert the DGFC module into the position Aux of the pneumatic compartment
as shown in Figure 1-11.

7. Fix the module by using the provided screw and connect the flat cable to the
relevant connector as shown in Figure 1-12.

8. At the end of the operation, remove the Aux slot cover from the pneumatic
compartment panel as shown in Figure 1-13.

9. Fix the pneumatic compartment panel to the rear of the GC by using the three
securing screws.

Installing the NPD Control Card
The NPD control card must be installed into the proper expansion slot marked C
located on the left part of the GC mother board in the electronic compartment.
Refer to Figures 1-14 and 1-15.
NOTE In the case all the expansion slots are occupied, it is necessary to remove the “C” detector
control card currently installed and replace it with the NPD control card.
Do not remove the ECD control card already installed.
Material needed:
• 3-mm Allen wrench

2. Verify that the jumper marked Jx, adjacent to the defined detector control card
connector on the mother board, is positioned between the pins 1 and 2. Refer
to the following table.

WARNING! The jumper marked “Jx” must be positioned between the pins 1 and 2.
3. Guide through the slot mentioned at point 1 the signal and ignition cables
coming from the top of the card.
4. Plug the detector control card into theselected expansion slot on the mother
board.
5. Fix the control card by using the same screw previously removed at point 1.
