Introduction
Congratulations on the purchase of your Toshiba ATAPI CD-ROM drive. Read carefully
through this manual in order to install the drive and learn how to use it. For specification
details of your CD-ROM drive, see the accompanying specification booklet.
A New Type of Drive
Early CD-ROM drives operated using CLV (Constant Linear Velocity) where the
amount of data passing under the read head was always constant. This meant that the
rotation speed varied depending on which part of the disk was being read - faster spin for
the inside of the disk and slower spin for the outside.
Your Toshiba CD-ROM drive uses advanced PCAV (Partial Constant Angular Velocity)
which fixes the rotation speed for some parts of the disk. The drive switches
automatically between CAV to achieve the fastest possible access times and CLV to
achieve the fastest possible sustained data transfer rate.
This means that the old designations of fixed rotation speed are less helpful with this
new type of CD-ROM drive - the disk spins at different speeds during different
processes.
The REAL Test
Just spinning the disk faster does not necessarily mean the data is accessed or transferred
any faster. One of the reasons for this is that the laser head must be moved in and out
between the centre and the edge of the disk. The quality of the motor which moves the
laser head is vital as it must accelerate and then stop at exactly the right place on the disk
many thousands of times at incredible speeds.
The quality of the laser mechanism, on-board caching, error correction techniques, the
type of interface and the driver software can all have an effect on the access speed and
transfer rate. This means that a CD-ROM drive rated at a certain data transfer speed
might not really be able to achieve that speed because of bottlenecks elsewhere in the
drive
A drive with slow seek time, poor caching and poor error correction will cause
performance problems. Multimedia applications expect data to be delivered at an
acceptable rate. If the data is not delivered fast enough you notice a degradation in sound
or video quality while the computer waits for the next block of data from the CD-ROM
drive. Sometimes the poor data transfer speed can cause synchronisation between audio
and video material or between data and graphics to fail.

Your CD-ROM Drive
This manual guides you gently through the process of setting up the drive and fitting the
drive into your computer. But don’t worry! Take one step at a time and read each section
all the way through before you start.
Your Toshiba ATAPI CD-ROM Drive
Toshiba’s ATAPI CD-ROM drives are among the most advanced available today. Their
features include:
❑Tray operation. No fiddly and expensive caddy to wrestle with – just open
the tray, drop in a disk and close the tray again
❑Enhanced IDE (ATAPI) interface. Just connect the drive to an existing IDE
controller, load the supplied drivers and go (see page 12).
The enclosed Performance Specification booklet includes full details of access times and
electrical characteristics of your drive.
What Happens Next?
This manual shows you how to set up and install your CD-ROM drive. You will need a
small cross-head screwdriver and enough room to take the case off your computer.
NOTE
Before you work through the following steps, switch off the
computer and disconnect it from the mains power supply.
The first step is to check if you can attach the CD-ROM drive to your computer as it is
now - or if you will need a second controller card from your computer supplier.

IDE Drives
Your Toshiba CD-ROM drive is an EIDE (Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics) drive,
also known as an ATAPI (ATA Packet Interface) drive. Most personal computers now
use IDE or EIDE to control their disk drives. Your CD-ROM drive will work with any
EIDE controller and will work with some older IDE controllers. Performance will be
better with a newer EIDE controller.
You must now check that your computer has an IDE controller. If you don’t have an
IDE controller or if the cable connected to your controller has no free connectors, you
will need a new one.
Remove the Computer’s Case
Every computer casing is different, but the casing is usually attached to the frame by a
number of screws at the back. Turn the computer’s case right round so you can see the
back and look for four or six screws around the edge of the casing.
Remove the screws and put them somewhere safe. The outside casing will now either
slide or lift off. Put it safely out of your way so you have room to work.
Find Your IDE Controller
The disk drives in your computer are probably controlled either by a plug-in IDE or
EIDE card or by an EIDE controller built in to the motherboard. Check the user manual
supplied with your computer for details of how the disk drive or drives in your computer
are connected.
Newer controllers have two channels, that means two EIDE cables can be attached to the
controller and each one can have two storage devices attached to it. For your disks drives
and your CD-ROM drive to provide their best performance you should use one channel
for hard disks and the other for your CD-ROM drive.
Find Your Primary Cable
Find the hard disk drive in your computer; the flat, 40-core cable connected to it will
lead either to a plug-in card or lead directly to a socket on the motherboard. There may
be two hard disks attached to this cable, or just one - with a free plug on the cable for a
second hard disk - this is your controller’s primary cable.
Find Your Secondary Cable
Follow the primary cable back to your computer’s motherboard or the plug-in controller
card. Next to the place where the cable attaches to the controller there may be a second,
identical cable or a connector where one can be attached. This is your secondary
channel. If a cable is already attached, this is your secondary cable. If there is a
connector but no cable is attached to it - you will need to contact your supplier to ask for
a 40-core EIDE CD-ROM cable.

If your controller does not have a second channel - you will need to contact your supplier
to ask for a second, or a replacement, 2-channel EIDE controller.
Installing the Drive
Setting up the CD-ROM drive
This section shows you how to set up the drive and install it in your computer. These are
the steps you will follow:
❑Set the jumper plugs on the drive (if necessary)
❑Find a free drive bay at the front of the computer
❑Slide in the drive
❑Connect the drive to your IDE controller
❑Connect a power cable to your drive
❑Connect sound cables to your drive (optional)
❑Replace the computer’s case
❑Load the driver software to make your computer recognise the CD-ROM
drive.
If you are not familiar with the inside of your computer or if you feel the need for a little
help, find someone who has more experience and who can give you a hand. If there is
no-one to help, don’t worry, every step of the way is fully explained.
Read through this whole section covering all of the points above before you start. The
description and diagrams here are based on a typical desk-top computer. Your computer
casing or layout may be different to this. If so, refer to your computer’s user guide for
details of fitting additional drives.

Before you work through the following steps, switch off the
computer and disconnect it from the mains power supply.
Setting the Jumpers
Your CD-ROM drive has a couple of jumper switches which must be correctly set before
the drive is installed.
The switches are towards the left as you look at the back of the drive. The settings of
these switches may need to be changed, depending on your needs. The two settings for
each switch are ON and OFF, sometimes referred to as 1 and 0. If the connector plug
connects the two pins, the switch is ON, if the connector plug touches only one pin, or
is not present, the switch is OFF.
The Setup Jumper
The Setup jumper switches look like this:

Test Switches (T0, T1)
The leftmost two switches (a pair of pins makes one switch) are used during testing only.
These switches should always be OFF. The default setting for these switches is OFF.
Eject Suppression Switch (PRV/ALW)
The rightmost switch is used to inhibit the operation of the drive’s EJECT button. When
this switch is set to ON, the EJECT button operates normally, opening the CD-ROM
tray. When the switch is OFF, the EJECT button cannot be used to open the drive. The
default setting for this switch is ON.
Master / Slave Switch
These switches are used to set the configuration mode for the drive:
Only one jumper should ever be fitted to this switch block. A computer which
communicates with its disk drives using an IDE controller may use two cables; the
primary cable and the secondary cable. Each cable may carry up to two drives; one
configured as a master drive and the other configured as a slave drive. The drives may be
either IDE hard disk drives or other IDE devices (in this case an ATAPI CD-ROM
drive):

your computer uses and set the configuration jumper on the drive accordingly. Refer to

the documentation supplied with the hard disk drives in your computer for their
configuration switch settings:
It is possible to attach a CD-ROM drive to the same cable as a hard disk drive, but hard
disk performance suffers, so it is not recommended.
Find a Free Drive Bay
The CD-ROM drive fits into any free half-height drive slot at the front of the computer.
Free drive slots usually have a cover plate of metal or plastic which conceals the front of
the slot. This is sometimes clipped in place, or sometimes fixed with two screws.
Remove the cover plate ready to fit the drive.

Fit The Drive
Carefully slide the drive into the opening so that the disk tray shows at the front of the
computer:
Before you push the drive all the way in, you should connect the interface cable, power
cable and audio cables to the back of the drive. It may be easier to connect the cables
first before you push the drive fully into the slot.
Connect the Drive to your IDE Controller
In the Introduction, on page 5, you found the cable which you should now connect to the
CD-ROM drive.
Space inside personal computers is sometimes a little tight. You may need to gently
rearrange the cables inside the casing in order for the spare connector to reach your CD-
ROM drive when it is fitted.
Don’t worry if you have to unplug the cable from your hard disk drive, just note which
way it attaches and reattach it the same way when you have finished. The CD-ROM
drive or the hard disk drive can use either plug on the IDE cable, so don’t worry if you
have to change their positions.
The 40-pin connector fits into the interface connector on the back of the drive. One edge
of the ribbon cable is marked with a stripe or is coloured red, this connects to pin 1 on
the plug. The corresponding pin 1 on the CD-ROM drive’s interface connector is next to
the drive’s power connector. Make sure that pin 1 on the plug connects to pin 1 on the
drive.
Carefully push the connector into the socket, making sure it fits all the way in.
Connect the Drive to a DC Power Lead
You should have a small DC power lead inside your computer, ready to connect to the
back of the drive. If there is no power lead available, consult your computer dealer or
support service. You may need a “power splitter lead” - a Y shaped cable which taps two
power outputs from one input.

The connector should only fit one way into the power socket on the back of the drive.
One face of the plug has chamfered edges - make sure the plug fits into the socket
the right way up. Carefully push the plug all the way into the socket.
Connect a Sound Cable to your Drive
If you have a sound card and speakers and would like to play audio CDs through your
computer, you will need to get a sound cable from your supplier. Each sound card
requires a different cable, so you will need to tell your supplier which sound card you
have and that you have a Toshiba ATAPI CD-ROM drive. Your supplier should be able
to supply you with a suitable inexpensive cable.
The sound cable connects to your sound card at one end and to the analogue audio
connector at the rear left of the drive at the other (see page 14). You will need to refer to
the instructions which accompanied your sound card for details of any sound-driver
software required.
Replace the Computer’s Case
You can now push the drive all the way into the slot and, if necessary, fix it in place with
screws on either side. Replace the computer’s cover and replace all of the fixing screws.
CD-ROM Driver Software
Your Toshiba CD-ROM drive is supplied with driver software for DOS which enables
your computer to communicate with the CD-ROM drive. The DOS drivers also allow
Windows 3.x to use the CD-ROM drive.
You should make a back-up copy of the software disk before
installing the CD-ROM drivers. If you are not sure how to make a
back-up copy of the floppy disk, refer to your operating system’s
User's Guide.
DOS and Windows 3.x
Before you load the driver software you should make a safe copy of your
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. Type the following commands at the DOS
prompt, pressing [Enter] at the end of each line:
c:\
md \cd-safe
cd cd-safe
copy \autoexec.bat
copy \config.sys

You now have a safe copy of the two start up files in the directory \cd-safe. If you
need to return your operating system to its state before you started loading the drivers,
copy these two files back to the root level directory by typing at the DOS prompt:
c:
cd \
copy \cd-safe
Loading the Drivers
Put the floppy disk in drive a: and type a: (if your 3.5 inch floppy drive has a different
letter, for example drive B, type that letter followed by a colon) and press [Enter].
Type ATAPI and press [Enter]. The driver installation program now asks a number of
questions and guides you through the installation process.
When the installation is finished you will need to restart your computer for the drivers to
be loaded into memory.
Windows 95
Your Toshiba CD-ROM drive does not need any special drivers for Windows 95. As a
“plug and play” operating system, Windows 95 is complete with drivers to support all
popular peripherals, including ATAPI CD-ROM drives.
Some older computers may beunable to support all “plugand play” features of Windows
95. On these systems, Windows 95 allows the use of conventional DOS drivers as
supplied with the this drive and described above, under the heading DOS and Windows
3.x.
Care and Use of Your CD-ROM Drive
Most aspects of caring for your CD-ROM drive are simple matters of common sense.
However, here is a list of points to remember:
❑Do not expose your CD-ROM drive to extreme temperatures, excessive dust
or high humidity
❑Do not install your CD-ROM drive near any device that produces strong
electrical waves or magnetic fields
❑Do not stand heavy objects on your CD-ROM drive
❑There are no user serviceable parts in your CD-ROM drive
❑Install your CD-ROM drive on a flat and stable surface where it will not
experience vibration.

The Controls
Your CD-ROM drive has the following controls and features:
❑Disk tray
❑EJECT button
❑Emergency Eject
❑BUSY light
❑Headphones socket
❑Volume control.
The BUSY Light
When you put a disk into your CD-ROM drive, the busy light flashes slowly as it
attempts to locate a disk. It then indicates one of the following conditions:
During data transfer the BUSY light remains on.
The EJECT Button
The eject button is used to open the disk tray so you can put in or take out a disk.
Make sure the eject inhibit switch (see page 8) is set to ON. If this jumper is set to OFF
the EJECT button will not operate. The drive then expects all control, including the
ability to eject the disk, to come from the computer.
Emergency Eject
If the power supply to the drive fails, you can still remove the disk from the drive. Next
to the eject button on the front of the drive is a small opening. Insert a pointed instrument
(a straightened paper clip is ideal) into the opening and the disk tray will open.
The Headphones Socket
The headphones socket is used to connect headphones to your CD-ROM drive.
However, it can also be used to connect the CD-ROM drive to other equipment. For
example, you could connect the drive to an audio amplifier or a cassette recorder.
The VOLUME Control
The volume control is used to control the level of the audio signal from the headphones
socket. The volume control does not affect the level of the signal sent to the audio output
on the back of the drives.
1. The BUSY light goes out. The CD-ROM drive is ready to read data from the
disk.
2. The BUSY light flashes slowly. The disk may be dirty.

NOTE:
Make sure on desk-top computers that no drinks or other delicate
objects stand in front of the disk tray!
To open the disk tray and remove your disk, just press the Eject button:
Loading a Disk
After putting a disk into the drive, gently push on the front of the open disk tray. The tray
automatically slides into the drive.
The Audio-out Connectors
Audio output is through a dual 4-pin/2-pin, analogue/digital connector. Connect only to
the matching fitting, part number 70066 made by Molex Corporation, or equivalent. The
connector is wired as follows:

Mounting the Drive
The internal drive should be mounted within 20° of the horizontal or within 10° of the
vertical.
The drive has 12 screw mounts of size M3. The length of the screw (underside of screw
head to tip of screw) should not exceed 3 ± 0.5mm.
