For the safe installation of this equipment, read and understand all warning and cautions. Look for these

“DANGER” means: If you do not follow the instructions, severe injury or death will occur.
“WARNING” means: If you do not follow the instructions, severe injury or death can occur.
“CAUTION” means: If you do not follow the instructions, damage can occur to the equipment.
WARNING: Electronic components are static
sensitive. Use proper static precautions
(static straps) before working on the
equipment.
WARNING: The emergency shut-off valve
(also called the fire valve, shear valve or
impact valve) must be closed when service or
maintenance is performed on this equipment.
WARNING: You must have training in the
operation and programming of this dispenser
before using it. READ THE OPERATORS
MANUAL.
WARNING: Make sure this equipment is
correctly grounded. Failure to do will cause
injury or damage equipment or improper
operation. Improper grounding voids the
warranty.
WARNING: When anchoring the dispenser,
always level the dispenser with shims before
bolting to the island. DO NOT shim just the
middle of the dispenser and bolt down.
CAUTION: Do not drill holes in fuel
dispensers. Holes can cause failure of the
electronic equipment. The warranty will
become void. Use only adhesive backed sign
mounting brackets.
DANGER: Fire, explosion, injury or death will
occur if fuel filters are changed by untrained
personnel. Make sure only trained personnel
change filters.
DANGER: To prevent injury to you from
vehicles and onlookers, always place a
barrier around this equipment before
performing service or maintenance.
DANGER: Gasoline is flammable. NO
SMOKING OR OPEN FLAME.
DANGER: Disconnect all power to this
equipment and associated submerged
pump(s) during installation, service or any
maintenance, i.e., changing filters.
WARNING: You must have training in the
installation, service or maintenance of this
equipment (dispenser, pump, console,
control box or submerged pump) before
working on it. Maintenance repairs must be
done by authorized personnel only. Warranty
work may only be performed by Bennett
certified technicians.
WARNING: To prevent electric shock, keep
the electrical parts of the dispenser dry.

This equipment generates and uses radio frequency energy. If not installed and used properly., i.e., in strict
accordance with the instructions in the installation manual, it may cause interference with radio communi-

dance with Subpart J of part 15 of FCC rules. Class A computing devices are designed to provide reason-
able protection against such interference when operated in a retail environment.
Operation of the equipment in a residential area may cause unacceptable interference to radio and TV re-
ception. In such instances, any necessary corrective measures must be accomplished at the owners expense.

DETERMINING THE MODEL NUMBER
Determine the model number of the dispenser from the serial plate located on the dispenser. Utilizing the chart below
determine the features of the dispenser to be installed. Understanding the features of the dispenser to be installed will
be helpful in understanding the proper installation of the dispenser.
How a Model for the 3800 Series Retail Dispensers is Made Up.

INTRODUCTION
All of the dispensers shown in this book can be operated in the “Stand Alone” mode (no control console), or using
Bennett Current Loop fuel protocol (interfaced to a 3rd party device directly or via the Bennett model 515 Pump
Controller) OR RS485 interface to a Fleet Management System where only volume data is recorded OR Dual
Pulse Output to a Fleet Management System where only volume data is required.
FEATURES AND CAPABILITIES
1. A self-monitoring pulser will prevent product flow in the event of a malfunction.
2. Diagnostic software system built-in to aid in troubleshooting.
3. A Manager’s access code prevents unauthorized changes of the price per volume settings.
4. 1” high LCD displays which are lighted from the back with high efficiency, low power LEDs for easier view-
ing.
5. An allocation limit can be set from 1 to 999 gallons or 9,999 liters at the dispenser.
6. Maximum Display values for Menu Code 8 option 0 are:

7. A +3.6 volt DC nickel-cadmium battery retains totals and programmed information in the RAM memory dur
ing power failures for up to 10 days.
8. On board battery that maintains last sale information for 15 minutes in the event of power loss.
9. All units have conformal coated electronic boards to help protect them from moisture or foreign material dam
age. All major electronic board assemblies are environmentally tested and temperature cycled.
10. All major low voltage connectors incorporate gold on gold contacts to prevent oxidation and promote reliabil-
ity.
11. The dispenser meets or exceeds FCC Emission Standards and UL specifications.
12. Dispenser programming is performed from the manager’s keypad or the Local Preset keypad. The manager
keypad is located inside the electronics head.

The manager’s keypad allows the dispenser to be programmed. Or, if the dispenser
is equipped with a Local Preset, the Local Preset can be used to program the dis-
penser. When the manager keypad is plugged into the J3 connector on the CPU
board and the “Clear” and “Enter” button are pressed simultaneously for 3 seconds
the dispenser enters the attendant mode (sometimes referred to as “manager’s
mode”). The attendant mode allows access to the dispenser totals, pricing informa-
tion and programming information. The manager keypad is shipped with each dis-
penser and is located in the electronics head and is normally disconnected from the
system during normal use. See Figure 1.
See the “How To Prepare The Dispenser For Operation” section for a complete
description of keypad functions for programming the dispenser. See the “How To
Operate The Dispenser” section for an explanation of keypad use to read totals.
See the “How To Use Diagnostics” section for complete instructions for using the
keypad to read error codes.
The Error Messages. See Figure 2.
When an error message appears, there is a fault condition in the dispenser. Use the
dispenser diagnostics to determine the problem. Please refer to the 3000 series Ser-
vice manual #107933 for information on error codes and how to use diagnostics.
NOTE: When an error message appears the error message can be reset by
turning the pump handle on and back off.
The Power Failure Message. See Figure 3.
The Power Fail message occurs whenever the power has been interrupted or turned
off to the dispenser. If the power is turned off and the P Fail message does not ap-
pear, the charge is low on the 12-volt battery. Allow 24 hours to charge the battery
after powering up the dispenser for the first time.
The Last Sale Recall Switch. See Figure 4.
During a power outage, the last sale will continue to be displayed for 15 minutes.
After the 15 minutes, or if the battery bypass switch is pressed, the display will go
blank until normal power returns.

The Electronic Door Key Locks. See Figure 1
The key locks for the electronic door are located on either outside top edge
of the door. The Key locks for the lower door of the 3000 Series are lo-
cated on the left side (top and bottom) of the lower door panel. A key is
shipped with each dispenser. The same key is used for all the locks.
To lock the upper door, insert the key in one of the locks and turn clock-
wise until it stops. Repeat this step for the other lock. To lock the lower
door, turn the key clockwise until it stops in one of the locks. Repeat this
step for the other lock. To unlock either door, turn the key counterclock-
wise until it stops.
The upper door swings down on bottom hinges and the lower door swings
out on right hand hinges.
The Electro-Mechanical Totalizers. See Figure 2.
The electro-mechanical totalizers are located above each Individual Price
Per Volume Display. The total is cumulative and reads in whole unit
(gallon or liter) increments.
The Pump Handle. See Figure 3.
(Lever Operation)
The pump handles are located on the front or side of the dispenser. To
operate the dispenser, remove the nozzle from the holder and lift the pump
handle up for the ON position. Push the pump handle down for the OFF
position. These are referred to as “Lift to Start” nozzle boots.

HOW TO OPERATE THE DISPENSER
The explanations given in the menus listed in this section are intended for use by the operator, manager or service
technician.
How to Dispense Fuel - See Figure 1.
To dispense fuel, follow this procedure:
1. Remove the nozzle from the holder.
2. Lift the handle to the ON position. See Figure. Note: be sure the pump is author-
ized by the console or is in stand alone.
3. Wait for the displays to go to all 8’s and then all 0’s. This is called the “reset”.
4. Squeeze the nozzle trigger to dispense fuel into the vehicle or approved container.
5. Release the nozzle trigger when the desired amount of fuel has been dispensed.
6. Lower the handle to the OFF position.
7. Return the nozzle to the holder.
If the dispenser stops during the delivery of fuel, check the display for an error code. If
one is present, refer to the section in this manual entitled “How to Use Diagnostics,”

4. Wait for the displays to go to all 8’s and then all 0’s. This is called the “reset”.

How to Read the Electro-mechanical Totalizer
The dispenser is equipped with a Electro-mechanical totalizer for each hose which records
the volume dispensed for each sale. The volume recorded is an accumulative total that can-
not be reset. The electro-mechanical totalizers are located at the top of the main display
aligned above each Individual Price Per Volume Display. The total is cumulative and reads
in whole unit (gallon or liter) increments. See Figure 3.
Note: Because of rounding methods used and the nature of electronic totals versus an ana-
log device such as an electro-mechanical totalizer, electronic totals and electro-mechanical
totals will rarely match exactly.
Displaying Electronic Totals - To display electronic totals on the 3000 series retail dis-
penser you will access menu code 1 OR view the totals through the audit trail.
Method 1 -Using a magnet, place the magnet on the right edge below the (Money / Vol-
ume) display window as shown in Figure 2. . (Magnet shipped with each dispenser Ben-
nett p/n 108952). The magnet activates the electronic totals display and the Audit Trail.
The magnet activates a switch on the CPU and the money and volume totals will be dis-
played along with an audit report for 30 seconds. The magnet can be removed after the
switch is activated. See Figures 2 & 3.

Note -
* The nozzle lever should be in the “Off” position while accessing electronic totals.
How to read the Electronic Totals - See Figure 2,3, and 4. When a magnet is used to dis-
play the electronic totals, the first total displayed will be “Money” totals. The top row
shows the 6 most significant digits and the lower row shows the least most significant dig-
its. This example shows a total of $666,666,667.87.
After displaying the money total for 10 seconds, the display shows “Volume” totals . This
example shows 66,666,667.872 gallons. After 10 seconds, the display returns to normal.

How to Read Electronic Totals
Menu Code 1
This menu code allows the manager to read the electronic non-resettable hose totals that accumulate in the dis-
penser for money, volume, number of sales, and number of price changes.
To read the electronics totals for the hose position, follow this procedure:
1. Plug the Managers Keypad into the J3 connector on the CPU board.
2. Press and hold the “Clear” and “Enter” button simultaneously for 3
seconds until you see “Code 00” on the display. Press “1” and
“mode” See Figure 1.
3. You will see the current dollar amount in thenon-resettable electronic
totals. See Figure 2. The top line on the display represents the 6 Most
Significant Digits and the bottom lines shows the 5 Least Significant
Digits. In this example, the total dollar amount for this hose is
$1,149.01.
4. Press the “Enter” button and you will see the current volume amount in
the non-resettable electronic totals. See Figure 3. The top line on the
display represents the 6 Most Significant Digits and the bottom lines
shows the 5 Least Significant Digits. In this example, the total volume
amount for this hose is 1,032.490 volume units (gallons in the United
States).
5. Press the “Enter” Button and you will see the number of sales since the
dispenser was started up. See Figure 4. In this example it shows 8 sales
since the dispenser was brought into service.
6. Press the “Enter” button and you will see the number of price changes
since the dispenser was started up. See Figure 5. In this example it
shows 4 price changes since the dispenser was brought into service.
7. To exit the “Electronic Totals” mode press “Clear” and then “Clear”
and “Enter” buttons simultaneously to return to the normal sales dis
play.

How to Read the Audit Trail
The “Audit Trail” is a function that displays all of the following information:
1 - Electronic Money Totals
2 - Electronic Volume Totals
3 - Number of Electronic Calibration Changes
4 - The number of “Unit” changes
The Audit Trail is required by certain local regulations to be displayed when activated
(in this case, with a Magnet (shipped with each dispenser Bennett p/n 108952)). To
activate the Audit Trail follow the same procedure for accessing the electronic totals
with the magnet as described in the earlier section.
Step 1 - Use the magnet that comes with the dispenser and place it at the bottom right
hand corner of the Money/Volume window of the CPU/Display board (hose) that you
want to access the Audit Trail for. This will activate a switch on the electronic board
enabling the “Audit Trail”. See figure 1.
Step 2 - You can remove the magnet as soon as the switch is activated. The first infor-
mation that shows up is the electronic totals (as previously covered) and then automati-
cally displays the Audit Trail. See Figure 2.
Step 3 - The information in the Audit trail displays the number of electronic calibration
changes since the dispenser left the factory and the number of “Unit” changes (how
many times the unit was changed from “gallons” to “liters” etc. ). See figures 3 & 4.
The Audit Trail automatically terminates after approximately 30 seconds and returns to
the normal display.

How to Read Last Sale During a Power Failure
If an A.C. power failure occurs, the dispenser will display the last sale in progress at the
time of the failure. This display will alternate with the “Power Fail Message” (PPPPPP).
This will continue for 15 minutes after the dispenser has lost power. If power is returned,
the display will go back to it’s normal display.
NOTE: The battery will display data for 15 minutes.
Example : The customer is dispensing fuel and the dispenser / site loses power. The
customer has pumped $7.50 to this point. See Figure 1. At this point the dispenser valve
closes and the customer cannot continue fueling. The display will continue to alternate
between showing the amount (along with the volume amount) and the Power Fail mes-
sage for 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes if power is still out, the display goes blank
until power is returned.
HOW TO PREPARE THE DISPENSER FOR PROGRAMMING
NOTE: When a control console is used, some of the functions can be programmed and are downloaded to
the dispenser from the console. Examples are maximum delivery, slow flow offset and prices etc.
Connecting the Manager’s keypad for dispenser programming.
Programming is done from the manager’s keypad located inside the electronics compart-
ment. If the dispenser was ordered with the Local Preset option, you will use the Local
Preset keypad to program the dispenser. The following example assumes using the Man-
ager Keypad.
To enable the dispenser for programming:
1. Remove the keypad and cable from the plastic bag located on the inside of the elec-
tronic enclosure. Connect the cable to the Manager Keypad.
2. Locate the keypad receptacle located on the back of the CPU board, which is located
on the backside of the electronic door (If you have the Local Preset option the Local
Preset board will already be plugged in to the CPU). The plug receptacle is labeled
“J3” and is located on the right side edge of the CPU if viewed with the electronics
door open and from the back side of the board. (See Figure 3). This is where the
Manager Keypad and cable will connect to the CPU to program that hose.
Note—There is one CPU per hose. The CPU board has a black switch on top. See Figure
4.
Note- Make sure the handle is hung up in the dispenser nozzle boot.
3. With the dispenser power on, plug the manager’s keypad and cable into the con
nector labeled J3 on the CPU board.

4. With the Manager’s keypad properly connected, on the Manager Keypad, press the
“Cancel” and “Enter” button simultaneously and hold for 3 seconds until you see “Code 00”
on the display. See Figure 2.
5. When the programming session is complete, press the “Cancel” and “Enter” button simulta-
neously to exit the Managers Mode.
General Programming Instructions
Make sure the dispenser power is on and the pump handle is in the off position prior to entering the Man-
ager (programming) mode.
The dispenser has a variety of Menu Codes that are accessed by using the manager’s keypad. Menu
Codes 0 and 1 are accessed by the attendant or the manager to read diagnostic error codes or totals. The
remaining Menu Codes are used by first entering an access code in Menu Code 3. Without the correct
access code, the remaining Menu Codes are hidden. A description of each Menu Code is given below:

To program the dispensers memory for the first time, or following a RAM memory clear follow the menu codes in

NOTE: Connect the Mangers Keypad to the J3 connector on the CPU for the hose that you
want to program. (If this dispenser was ordered with the Local Preset option, you
will use the Local Preset Keypad). Make sure that the handle is in the off position
and that the dispenser power is on. Press the “Cancel” and “Enter” button simul-
taneously twice and hold for approximately 3 seconds until you see “Code 00” on
the display. See Figure. When you are finished programming, press the “Cancel”
and “Enter” button simultaneously to exit the Manager mode.
Note: When you are finished programming the dispenser, disconnect the keypad and cable
from the CPU and you should leave the Manager Keypad and cable inside the head
of the dispenser for the next time you need it.
How To Access Manager’s Mode - Menu Code 3
Access to Menu Codes 3 through 99 is gained by entering a four-digit access code. The software is
set with an access code at the factory of 2218. All dispensers covered in this manual are shipped
with this code. Menu Code 3 must be used each time the Manager wishes to access or program
Menu Codes 4 through 99. Menu code 3 does not need to be accessed to retrieve electronic totals.
To access the Manager’s Mode, follow this procedure:
1. Press the 3 button and then the MODE button on the keypad. See Fig. 1
2. The display shown in Figure 2 appears.
3. Enter the default number 2218. Four dashes appear in the display. See Figure 3.
4. Press the ENTER button. When access is gained, the four dashes disappear. If the dashes do
not move, the access code entered did not match the code stored in memory. Press the CAN
CEL button and repeat steps 1, 2, and 3.
5. When access is gained, press the CANCEL button to exit. See Figure 4.
How to Change the 4 digit Manager’s Access Code
A new access code can also be assigned in Menu Code 3.
NOTE - It is highly recommended that the factory default value of 2218 be kept in program-
ming. If the security code is changed by someone and you do not know what the code is, you
will not be able to access the programming modes.

How To change the Security Code - Menu Code 3
After getting past security in mode 3 you can change the security code to any 4 digit number. You can-
not disable the security code. Even if you enter all 0000’s in mode 3 you would have to enter all 0000’s
in mode 3 to continue.
To change the security code you must enter the current security code in mode 3. Only then can you
change it. So, after you enter the security code press “Cancel” and then follow these steps:
1. At the “Code 00” screen, press “3” and then “Mode”. The display should look like Figure 1.
2. Press the “Up Arrow” button on the Managers keypad. The price window should show the what
you see in Figure 2.
3. Enter the new security code. You will notice that you can now see the number in the display win-
dow. In this example we entered “2218”. Make sure to press the “Enter” button after the security
code has been chosen. See Figure 3.
NOTE - It is highly recommended that you leave the security code programmed with the factory
setting of 2218. If the security code is changed and you do not know what it is, a RAM clear will
be required to get the system back to 2218.
Lost or Forgotten password - If the password has been changed and you do not know what it is, you
will need to follow these steps:
Note - This procedure requires breaking the calibration seal on the E-cal switch. Make sure to re-seal
the switch when you are done.
1. Open the upper electronics door and lower it. Locate the e-cal switch on the top of the CPU.
2. Break the seal and push the e-cal switch to the “On” position. Press “Cancel” (Clear) on the key-
pad.
3. Press “3” and “Mode”. Press the “Up” arrow. Enter the new pass-code. (You will see it as you enter
the numbers). Press “Enter”
4. Turn the E-cal switch back off and reseal.
