TheIS-mA1minialarmisasecond generation ATEX certified
intrinsicallysafesounderwhichproducesaloudwarning
signalinahazardousarea.Forty-ninefirststagealarm
soundscan beselectedbyinternalswitchesand eachone
canbeexternallychangedtoasecond orthirdstagealarm
sound.ThesoundermaybeusedinallgasgroupsIIAIIB
andIIC.
2)Description
Fig1showsasimplifiedblock diagramofan IS-mA1
minialarmsounder.Thedeviceoperatesimmediatelypower
isappliedtothe+and terminalswhichareduplicatedto
allowasecond soundertobeconnectedinparallel,orforan
endof linemonitoringresistortobeinstalled. Theoutput tone
isdefinedbythepositionsofthesixinternalswitchesandthis
tonecan bechangedtoasecond orthirdstagealarmtoneby
connectingterminalsS2orS3to0V.Thetonegeneratoris
crystalcontrolledtoensurethatwhentwosounders
connectedtothesamepowersupplyarestartedatthesame
timetheoutputtonesremainsynchronised.

TheIS-mA1minialarmsounderhasbeendesignedto
operateinahazardousareafroma24Vdcsupplyviaa28V
93mAresistiveATEX certifiedZenerbarrierorgalvanic
isolator.Thesoundersmaybetestedorusedinsafeareas
withoutaZenerbarrierorgalvanicisolator,butatsupply
voltagesabove16Vtheinternalcurrent limitwillfunction and
thereforeitisrecommendedthattheyarenotoperated
continuouslywithadirectsupplygreaterthan16V.

about3dB.Three soundersshouldonlybepoweredfroma
commonsupplywhenthemaximumsupplyvoltageis
available.
4.4TerminalsS2andS3
WhenterminalsS2orS3areconnectedto0V(-terminal)the
sounderoutputtonechangestothesecondorthirdstage
alarmrespectively.Theinputsafetyparametersforthese
terminalsare:

Ii = 0mA
Becausethepermittedinputcurrentiszero,theseterminals
mayonlybeconnectedtoadiodereturnbarrier,an
intrinsicallysaferelayoragalvanicisolator,allofwhichmust
havebeencertifiedbyan ECNotifiedBody.Onlydiodereturn
barrierswithavoltagedrop ofless than0.9Vmaybeused.
Alternatively,theseterminalsmaybeconnecteddirectlytoa
mechanicallyactivatedswitchwithinthehazardousarea.

5) Installation
IS-mA1minialarmsoundersshouldonlybeinstalledby
trainedcompetentpersonnel.
5.1Mounting
TheIS-mA1minialarmsoundermaybesecuredtoanyflat
surfacebyinserting twomountingscrewsthroughtheback of
theround base(see figure3).TheenclosureprovidesIP65
protectionandissuitableforinstallationinexteriorlocations
providedthattheareaaround thetwomountingscrews
through theback ofthebasemoulding hasbeensealedand
thatsuitablecableglandswiththerequiredIPrating have
beenused.
5.2Installationprocedure
a.Unscrewthesounderunitsecurityscrewand remove
thesoundersection fromthebasebyturningitanti-
clockwise.Ensurethatthe ‘O’ringsealremainsin
place.
b.Removetherequired20mm knockoutsection(s)
depending on systemwiringand mountthebasetoa
flatsurfacebyinserting twoscrewsthroughtheback
ofthebase.
c.Fittherequirednumberof20mmcableglandsor
conduitentriesintothebaseand connectthefield
wiringtotheappropriatesounderterminalsasshown
insection6and fig2ofthismanual.Thepowersupply
terminals+and-areduplicatedsothat soundersmay
beconnectedinparallel,oran end oflinemonitoring
resistormaybefitted.
d.Selecttherequiredoutputtonebypositioning thesix
switchesasshowninTable1andFig2.
e.Applypowertothesounderand adjusttheinternal
volumecontroltoprovidetherequiredsoundlevel.
f.Check thatthe ‘O’ringsealiscorrectlylocatedon the
soundersection(see Fig.2)and insertthesounder
sectionintothebase.Pushitfullyhomeandturnit
clockwisetoalign themouldingsbeforetighteningthe

9) Maintenance
Thesoundershouldberegularlyinspectedtoensurethatit
hasnotbeendamaged.Frequency ofinspection depends
uponenvironmentalconditions,butinitiallywerecommend
that thisshouldbedoneannually.
NoattemptshouldbemadetorepairafaultyISmA1
sounder.Suspectsoundersmustbereturnedto
EuropeanSafetySystemsLtd.ortoyourlocalagentfor
repair.
