GETTING STARTED
Thank you for purchasing Hunter Douglas Design Studio™Roman shades with PowerView®
Gen 3 Automation. With proper installation, operation, and care, your new shades will provide
years of beauty and performance.
Please thoroughly review this instruction booklet and the enclosed packing list before
beginning the installation.
Tools and Fasteners Needed
■Flat blade and Phillips screwdrivers
■Measuring tape and pencil
■Level (laser level is recommended)
■Power drill, 3∕32" drill bit, and 1∕4" hex driver
In addition, you will need fasteners designed to work with your specific mounting surface(s).
■#6 x 1½" Hex Head Screws (Provided). Two 1½" screws are provided per installation
bracket.
■Speed Nuts and Screws (Provided). If ordered, extension brackets come with speed nuts
and screws.
■Drywall Anchor (Not Provided). Use drywall anchors when mounting into drywall.
■#6 x 2" Hex Head Screws (Provided). If using spacer blocks or if you have a valance
headboard, two 2" screws are provided per installation bracket or the necessary amount to
secure the valance headboard.

INSTALLATION
Installation Overview
To install your shade, you will need to perform the following three steps:
STEP 1: Install the Brackets
STEP 2: Install the Battery Wand (If Applicable)
STEP 3: Install the Shade
STEP 4: Connect the Power Source
STEP 1 — Install the Brackets
■Your order will include installation brackets specific to your
shade. The number of installation brackets required
varies with headrail width, as shown in the table.
IMPORTANT: A 5∕8" spacer block (provided) is required
for outside mount shades using the battery wand clip.
Mounting Types and Window Terminology
If the installation brackets are mounted correctly, the rest of the installation process follows
easily. To prepare for this important first step, review the mounting types and basic window
terminology illustrated below.

Mount the Installation Brackets — Inside Mount with
Valance
With the optional valance, first the valance headboard is mounted inside the casement and
then the installation brackets are mounted to the valance headboard.
■Locate the valance headboard inside the window casement. Position the headboard
against the head jamb.
➤The headboard must be recessed into the window opening at least 1¾" for secure
attachment.
➤To fully recess the valance, a minimum depth of 37
/8" is required.
➤The hook-and-loop material faces front and the staples on the headboard face down.
■Drill 1
/8"pilot holes for the valance headboard mounting screws. Drill the holes all the way
through the fabric and headboard into the head jamb.
➤Starting 2" from each end, space the pilot holes no more than 12" apart. Locate the
holes 11
/8" from the back of the headboard so the screws do not interfere with shade
installation. Mount into wood whenever possible.
CAUTION: Use drywall anchors when mounting into drywall. Drywall anchors are not
provided.
■Attach the valance headboard to the head jamb. Use the 2" hex head screws.
■Continue to the next section “Mount the Installation Brackets — Inside Mount without
Valance” for instructions on how to mount the installation brackets to the valance
headboard with the valance headboard being the head jamb.
➤If necessary, adjust bracket spacing to avoid the valance headboard mounting screws.
➤Typically, the back of the installation brackets should align with the back of the
headboard.

■Mark 2" in from each jamb.
➤If more than two installation brackets came with your order, space additional bracket(s)
evenly between the two end brackets and mark their location. Mount into wood
whenever possible.
➤With shades using a battery wand, there must be a minimum of 15½" between
brackets at the motor end.
➤With shades using two battery wands, there must be a minimum of 18" between
brackets at the motor end.

■Center the brackets on your marks, then mark each of the screw holes.
➤For fully recessed and minimum mounting depth based on your order options, see the
illustration on the next page.
IMPORTANT: The front edges of the installation brackets must be level and aligned.
■Drill the screw holes using a 3/32" drill bit.
■Attach the installation brackets using the screws provided.
➤Check that the mounting surface is level and the brackets are aligned. If mounting to a
heavily textured surface, shim the brackets, if needed.
IMPORTANT: Use drywall anchors when mounting into drywall. Drywall anchors are
not provided.

Mount the Installation Brackets — Outside Mount without
Valance
The standard shade has an attached battery wand requiring a spacer block to be used with
the installation bracket. DC power supply or satellite battery pack will not require a spacer
block.
■Center the headrail over the window opening at the desired height. Use a pencil to lightly
mark each end of the headrail.
➤Alternatively, measure the width of the headrail and use that width to mark the
headrail end points over the window opening.
■Mark 2" in from each end of the headrail.
➤If more than two installation brackets came with your order, space additional bracket(s)
evenly between the two end brackets and mark their location. Mount into wood
whenever possible.
➤With shades using a battery wand, there must be a minimum of 15½" between
brackets at the motor end.
➤With shades using two battery wands, there must be a minimum of 18" between
brackets at the motor end.
■Center the brackets on your marks and mark the screw holes.
➤A minimum of 13/4" flat
vertical surface is required to
mount the brackets.
➤For shades with attached
battery wand, place a spacer
block behind each installation

IMPORTANT: The brackets should be level and aligned.
■Extension brackets provide up to 1½" of clearance.
If used, center the brackets on your marks and
mark the screw holes.
■Drill the screw holes using a 3∕32" drill bit.
CAUTION: Use drywall anchors when mounting into drywall.
Drywall anchors are not provided.
■Attach the installation/extension brackets using the screws
provided.
CAUTION: The rear of the installation brackets must
be flush against a flat mounting surface. Do not mount
installation brackets oncurved molding.
■When using extension brackets, attach the installation
brackets using the screws andspeed nuts provided.
IMPORTANT: For shades with attached battery wand, leave
at least 5∕8" between the wall side of the extension bracket
and the back of the installation bracket.
Proceed to “STEP 3 — Install the Shade” on page 14.
Mount the Installation Brackets — Outside Mount with
Valance
With the optional valance, first the valance headboard is mounted and then the installation
brackets are mounted to the wall or molding under the headboard.
The standard shade has an attached battery wand requiring a spacer block to be used with
the installation bracket. DC power supply or satellite battery pack will not require a spacer
block.
■Mark where the ends of the valance headboard will be located. Center the headboard
above the window opening at the height to allow enough room for the shade to be

mounted below. Use a pencil to lightly mark where its ends are located.
➤Alternatively, measure the width of the valance headboard and use this measurement
to determine where the ends of the headboard will be located.
➤Mark L-bracket locations. Use a pencil to lightly mark 3" in from each valance
headboard end location. If more than two L-brackets came with your order, make
additional marks to space the other bracket(s) evenly between the two end brackets.
With two-piece headboards (valances over 96" wide), the two equal-width sections
abut in the center. Space brackets 3" in from the ends of each section and evenly in-
between.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to place a bracket on each side of the center split.
■Mark screw locations. Center an L-bracket
on each mark. Then mark where to drill the
screw holes for the mounting screws.
➤The top of the L-brackets should be 1"
below the height where you want the
top of the valance to be located.
➤The rear of the L-brackets must be flush
against a flat mounting surface. Do not
mount L-brackets on curved molding.
IMPORTANT: The tops of the L-brackets must align level after mounting.
■Drill 1∕8" pilot holes for the L-bracket mounting screws.
➤Mount into wood whenever possible.

CAUTION: Use drywall anchors when mounting into drywall. Drywall anchors are not
provided.
■Attach the L-brackets to the mounting surface. Use the 1½" hex head screws provided
with your order.
■Check alignment. The tops of all L-brackets must be aligned and level.
■Mark screw locations for attaching the valance headboard.
Position the valance headboard on top of the L-brackets
with its ends aligned with the end marks and the back
against the wall.
➤The hook-and-loop material faces front and the staples
on the headboard face down.
➤Mark the bottom of the headboard (the side with the
staples) through the front and rear slotted holes on the
center of the L-brackets.
■Drill 1∕8" pilot holes for the valance headboard mounting
screws. Remove the headboard and drill the pilot holes. Be careful not to drill through the
fabric on the top of the valance headboard.
■Attach the headboard to the L-brackets. Use the provided ¾" hex head screws. (Longer
screws will pierce the top of the fabric.)
■Mount the shade installation brackets to the wall or molding underneath the valance
headboard.
➤The top of the installation brackets
must be ¼" below the bottom
of the valance headboard, so
that the L-brackets do not interfere
with shade installation.
➤A minimum of 13/4" flat vertical
surface is required to mount the
installation brackets.
➤For shades with attached battery
wand, place a spacer block behind
each installation bracket to allow
for the extra space needed for
these components.
➤Mount the end installation brackets on the inside of the valance L-brackets.
➤If necessary, adjust spacing of additional installation brackets to avoid L-brackets.
➤Do not install the installation brackets directly into the valance headboard.
➤Do not use extension brackets with the shade installation brackets.

STEP 2 — Install the Battery Wand (If Applicable)

NOTE: Refer to this section only if a battery wand clip was included with the shade.
■Attach the battery wand clip to the headrail.
IMPORTANT: Position the clip so that
the battery wand will be between
installation brackets.
■Hook the battery wand clip onto the
back channel ofthe headrail.
■Rotate the clip down until it snaps
into place.
CAUTION: Be sure the power cable does
not become pinched by the brackets or headrail during installation; damage or overheating
of components couldresult.
CAUTION: Do not connect the battery wand to the power cable prior to installing
the shade.

■Attach the battery wand clip to the headrail.
■Hook the battery wand clip onto the back channel of
the headrail.
IMPORTANT: Position the clip so that the battery
wand will be between installation brackets.
■Rotate the clip down until it snaps into place.
Install the Battery Mount into the Clips
■From the back of the shade headrail, connect the
power cable from the motor side into the socket on the rechargeable battery mount.
■Align the slots in the battery mount with the battery wand clips.
■Push the battery mount onto the battery wand clips until it snaps into place.
Check to make sure the battery mount is secure.
CAUTION: Be sure the cable does not become pinched by the
battery wand clips during installation. Damage or
overheating of components could result.

STEP 3 — Install the Shade
If You Have a Battery Wand Clip...
(For DC power supply or satellite battery
pack installations, skip this step.)
■Attach the battery wand clip to the headrail.
IMPORTANT: Position the clip so that
the battery wand will be between
installation brackets.
➤Hook the battery wand clip onto the
back channel ofthe headrail.
➤Rotate the clip down until it snaps
into place.
CAUTION: Be sure the power cable does not become pinched by the brackets or headrail
during installation; damage or overheating of components couldresult.
CAUTION: Do not connect the battery wand to the power cable prior to installing
the shade.
If You Have a Dust Cover...
■If an optional dust cover was ordered (outside mount with no valance only), attach
hook-and-loop strips to the top of the headrail. Install the strips 1½" from each end of the
headrail and midway between installation bracket
mounting locations.
➤Peel the adhesive backing from one side of the
hook-and-loop strip.
➤Press the adhesive side firmly in place so that the
ends of the strip are flush with the front and back
lips on the top of the headrail.

Install the Shade into the Brackets
■Install the shade into the installation brackets. Refer to the illustrations below.
➤With the headrail slightly tilted, insert its front lip onto the front lip of the installation
bracket.
➤Push the headrail back and up until its bottom lip snaps into bottom tab on the
installation bracket.
➤Check that the headrail is secure in all brackets.
NOTE: On inside-mounted shades, there is a light-minimizing strip on the headrail that
helps to reduce the top light gap. This strip may be removed, if desired.
If You Have a Dust Cover...
■Peel the backing from the top of the hook-and-loop strips.
With the top of the dust cover facing the room, align its
ends with the ends of the headrail.
➤Tuck the front edge of the dust cover under the folded
edge of the fabric on top of the headrail.
➤Push the back of the dust cover down and press firmly
in place onto the hook-and-loop strips.

Attach the Valance Fabric (If Applicable)
■Center the valance fabric in front of the valance headboard. Press the strip of hook-and-
loop material on the fabric to the hook-and-loop material on the front of the headboard.
➤Be sure the top of the valance fabric is aligned and level with the top of the valance
headboard.
➤If necessary, adjust the placement of the valance fabric by carefully peeling the top
from its hook-and-loop attachment and repositioning it.
➤For valances with only one return, attach the fabric to the return side first.
➤Affix the valance returns to the ends
of the valance headboard (outside
mounts only). Press the strip of
hook-and-loop material on the
valance returns to the hook-and-loop
material on the ends of the
headboard. Make adjustments as
necessary until you are satisfied with
the appearance of the valance.
NOTE: Garment tacks are used to
secure the pleats on the returns during shipping. They can be left in for a more tailored
return or carefully removed for a fuller return.

STEP 4 — Connect the Power Source
NOTE: When power is connected to the motor, a blue LED inside the manual control button
housing will flash to indicate the shade is ready for operation.
■Refer to the appropriate page based on your order.
➤For a battery wand, see below.
➤For a satellite battery pack, see page 18.
➤For an optional DC power supply, see page 19.
➤For two battery wands and a double connector power cable, see page 20.
➤For an optional DC power supply with daisy-chain connections, page 21.
➤For an optional C-size satellite battery wand, see the instructions that came with the
wand.
If You Have a Battery Wand or Satellite Battery Pack...
Install Batteries into the Battery Wand
■Squeeze the cap latch to release thecap.
■Remove the cap from the battery wand.
■Install the batteries according to the instructions
on the battery wand label.
NOTE: Hunter Douglas recommends AA alkaline
batteries for use with our battery-powered shades. These will provide approximately
one year of operation, depending on usage. Lithium and rechargeable batteries are not
recommended.
■Replace the cap.
➤Align the tab with the end of the wand.
➤Press the cap on until it latches.

■Align the battery wand with its socket
toward the motor side end cap.
■Push the battery wand straight up into
the battery wand clip until it snaps into
place. Check to make sure the battery
wand is secure.
CAUTION: Be sure the cable does not

Plug the Power Cable into the Battery Wand
■On the back of the headrail, connect the power cable (coming from the shade) into the
socket on the battery wand.
Proceed to “Testing the Shade” on page 21.
If You Have a Satellite Battery Pack...
Install Batteries into the Battery Wand
■See the instructions on the previous page.
Mount the Satellite Battery Pack
■Decide where you want to attach the wall mount bracket.
A satellite battery pack may be mounted in any orientation.
■Mark the screw holes.
■Drill the screw holes using a
3
/ 32 " drill bit.
■Remove the backing from the double-sided tape. Press the bracket into place.
■Attach the bracket using the screws provided.
■Position the battery wand so the power cable is easily connected to the socket.
■Snap the battery wand into the bracket.
■Install the battery wand cover with the slot aligned
to the socket in the battery wand.
■Plug the power cable from the shade into the
extension cable.
■Plug the other end of the extension cable
into the socket in the battery wand.
■Secure the power supply cable using wire
retainers (not supplied). If hiding the cable
behind the shade, make sure it does not impede
the operation of theshade.
