GETTING STARTED

Hunter Douglas Silhouette®Window Shadings with hard-wired motorization are recommended
for professional installation only. Planning and wiring should be completed before the shadings
are installed.
Motorized shadings ship with the motor installed inside the headrail. All other components
required for operation are ordered separately. Consult a home automation professional if
integrating with a home automationsystem.
Please thoroughly review this instruction booklet and the enclosed packing list before beginning
the installation. Check the packaging to be sure you have all the components needed to install
the shadings. Keep the packaging until the shadings perform to your satisfaction. Do not remove
theprotective plastic cover on the headrail until after each shading is installed.

Installation Overview
■Your order will include the correct number of installation brackets for your shading width, as
shown in the table below.
■Shading orders may also include spacer blocks or extension brackets, if they were specified
for added clearance.
Mounting Types and Window Terminology
If the installation brackets are mounted correctly, the rest of the shading installation process
follows easily. To prepare for this important first step, review the mounting types and basic
window terminology illustrated below.
IMPORTANT: Always check local electrical codes before completing any wiring.

Mount the Installation Brackets —Inside Mount
Prepare the Installation Brackets
The purpose of the back cover bracket is to provide an
attachment for the optional back cover.
■If using the optional back cover:
➤Remove the top tab on the back cover bracket.
➤Snap the back cover bracket into the metal
installation bracket.
➤Place the back cover into the slots on the top
and bottom of the bracket.
Mount the Installation Brackets
■Mark 2" to 3" from each jamb for bracket location.
➤If more than two installation brackets came with your order, space additional bracket(s)
evenly between the two end brackets and mark their location. Mount into wood
whenever possible.
■Center the brackets on yourmarks, then mark the screw hole locations.
➤The minimum casement depth for installation brackets
is 1". Mark the rear set of installation bracketholes with
shallow mounting depths.
➤The minimum casement depth for a fully recessed
mount is 3

/ 16 " for the Classic headrail (2" and 3" vane
sizes, except Grandiose™) and 3

/ 4 " for the Quartette®
headrail (4" vane size and Grandiose). Mark the front
set of bracket holes when depth permits.
➤Add

IMPORTANT: The front edges of the brackets must be level and aligned to each other.
■Drill the screw holes using a

/ 32 " drill bit.
CAUTION: Use drywall anchors when mounting into drywall.
■Use a level to check that the mounting surface is level. Shim (not provided) the brackets if
necessary.

■Attach the installation brackets using the screws provided.
IMPORTANT: Do not overtighten the screws. Check to ensure the
lever can be moved easily side to side. If not, loosen the screws in
one-eighth turn increments until the lever can be moved easily.
■If using the optional back cover: Install the cover into
the back cover brackets. If necessary, trim the back
cover to the desired width.
Proceed to “Install the Shading” on page7.

Mount the Installation Brackets
■Center the headrail over the window opening at the desired height. Use a pencil to lightly
mark each end of the headrail on the mounting surface.
➤Alternatively, measure the width of the headrail and use that width to mark the headrail
end points over the window opening.
■Mark 2" to 3" from each end of the headrail for bracket location.
➤If more than two installation brackets came with your order, space additional bracket(s)
evenly between the two end brackets and mark their location. Mount into wood
whenever possible.

■Center the installation brackets or extension brackets on your marks and mark where to drill
the screw holes.
➤A minimum 1" flat vertical surface isrequired for the installation brackets. Extension
brackets require 1
1
/ 4 ".
➤The tops of the installation brackets or extension brackets should be at the desired
height. The brackets should be level andaligned.
CAUTION: The rear of the brackets must be flush against a flat mounting surface. Do not
mount brackets oncurved molding.
■Drill the screw holes using a

/ 32 "
drill bit.
CAUTION: Use drywall anchors
when mounting into drywall.
■Attach the installation or extension
brackets using the screws provided.
IMPORTANT: The tops of the
installation brackets or extension
brackets must be level with their

■If using spacer blocks, attach the spacer block(s) and
installation bracket to a flat vertical mounting surface
with #6screws long enough for asecure installation.

INSTALLATION

■If using extension brackets, attach an installation bracket
to the underside of each extension bracket using thespeed
nuts and screws provided.
Install the Shading
Connect the Wires
WARNING! Do not plug the power supply into the outlet until you have completed
all the electrical connections. Any live power can giveyou an electric shock.
■Connect the wires from the shading to the power wires.
NOTE: The motor wire must be long enough to reach
the power, but not so long that it could become entangled
with the shading’s moving parts. Trim excess wire.
IMPORTANT: Always check local electrical codes
before completing any wiring.
CAUTION: Be sure the wires do not become pinched
by the brackets or headrail during installation. Damage
or overheating of components could result.
Mount the Headrail
■Peel back the protective covering
from the top of the fabric-covered
headrail. Leave the rest of the
protective covering on the front of
the headrail.
■Position the shading so that the front
faces you.
■Slide the headrail into the installation
brackets so the edge of the headrail
is between the lever and the bracket,
asshown.

■Firmly push the headrail into each bracket until it clicks and the lever snaps to the right side
of the bracket.
CAUTION: Failure to snap the headrail securely into the installation brackets may cause
the shading to release unexpectedly.
IMPORTANT: Carefully pull on the headrail at each bracket to ensure it is
installedsecurely.
■Completely remove the protective covering from the fabric-covered headrail.
Attach the Dust Cover (Optional for Outside Mounts)
The dust cover is used to protect the top of the headrail from exposure on outside mounted
shadings.
■Cut the dust cover to desired width.
■Remove the paper backing on one side of the hook and loop
fastener dots.
■Apply the dots to the installation brackets on each end of theshading.
■Remove the remaining paper backing from the dots.
■Center the dust cover over the top of the shading, above the dots.
■Press the dust cover down onto the dots.

Operate the Shading
■Lower and raise the shading using the control device(s) for your particular installation.
CAUTION: When raising the shading for the first time, observe how the fabric winds on the
roll. It should wind evenly. If the fabric roll becomes uneven or starts to rub against one end of
the headrail, immediately stop the shading. See the troubleshooting solution for the problem,
“The shading raises or lowers unevenly, the fabric rubs against one end of the headrail, or the
bottom rail is uneven when fullyraised.” on page 13.
IMPORTANT: If the bottom rail stops before reaching the desired bottom or upper position, or
the bottom rail keeps moving after reaching thedesired bottom or upper position, see the Travel
Limit procedures on pages 11 and 12.

Problem The shading will not fit into the installation brackets.
Solution Check that the headrail is completely inserted into the installation brackets. See
“Install the Shading” on page 7.
Check that the installation brackets are level and aligned. Adjust and/or shim
(not provided) if necessary.
Check that the locking tab on the installation bracket slides over the headrail.
Problem The motor does not operate.
Solution Check that the DC power supply is securely plugged into the wall outlet and that
the outlet has power.
Check that the control device is programmed correctly. Refer to the
documentation that came with the control device.
Check that all wire connections are secure and properly connected.
With power off, reverse the polarity of the motor wires and try operating the
shadingagain.
Check that wiring run guideline lengths have not been exceeded.
Problem The motor seems to be running with difficulty, or sounds like it is straining.
Solution Check that inside-mounted shadings are not installed too tightly into the window
opening. Make sure there is clearance between the ends of the shading and the
window casement.
Check that the installation brackets are level and aligned. Adjust and/or shim if
necessary.
Problem The shading operates opposite of the intended direction. It goes up when
you try to lower it or goes down when you try to raise it.
Solution Verify that the programming of the motor control device is correct.
With power off, reverse the polarity of the motor wires.
Troubleshooting
If your shading is not operating correctly:
■First, refer to the table below for specific solutions for your shading.
■Next, review any guides that came with your motor control devices.
■If questions remain, please contact your fabricator motorization specialist.

Problem The shading does not raise or lower completely.
Solution Check that the shading fabric is not catching on any brackets or window
components.
Adjust the upper and/or lower bottom rail travel limits (see below).
Problem The bottom rail stops before reaching the desired bottom or upper position,
or the bottom rail keeps moving after reaching thedesired bottom or upper
position.
Solution Adjust Travel Limits
Two buttons — one yellow and one
black — are located on the underside
of the motor, next to the right end cap.
These buttons are used to adjust the
shading’s travel limits.
Adjust Bottom Travel Limit
■Push the yellow button in until it clicks into a
recessed position.
■If the bottom rail stops before the desired
bottom position: Lower the bottom rail to the
desired bottom position.
➤Release the yellow button by pushing on it.
■If the bottom rail lowers farther than the desired bottom position or
raises after reaching the desired bottom position: Operate the shading
until the bottom rail reaches the desired bottom position.
➤Release the yellow button by pushing on it.
■Raise the shading 12" up from the bottom, and lower it again to check your
adjustment. Repeat the sequence if necessary.

■Push the black button in until it clicks into a
recessed position.
■If the bottom rail stops before the desired
upper position: Raise the bottom rail to the
desired upper position.
➤Release the black button by pushing on it.
■If the bottom rail raises farther than the desired upper position:
Lower the shading until the bottom rail reaches the desired upper position.
➤Release the black button by pushing on it.
■If the bottom rail has rotated through the headrail and is now
hanging lower than the desired upper position: Raise the bottom rail to
the desired upper position.
➤Release the black button by pushing on it.
IMPORTANT: If the bottom rail rotated through the headrail, you must
reset the bottom travel limit after setting the upper limit.
■Lower the shading 12" down from the top, and raise it again to check your
adjustment. Repeat the sequence if necessary.

Problem The shading raises or lowers unevenly, the fabric rubs against one end of
the headrail, or the bottom rail is uneven when fullyraised.
Solution Check that the window is square by measuring the diagonals.
Check that the installation brackets are level. Shim to level, ifnecessary.
Adjust the bottom rail weight:
■Release the weight clips by inserting
a flat blade screwdriver into the
weight clip and turning clockwise.
■Move the weight in 1" increments toward the side where the fabric is
gathering.
■Secure the weight clips in position by turning them counterclockwise after
making the adjustment.
■Test and if necessary adjust again.
Problem Vanes do not align on side-by-side shadings.
Solution When the shadings are fabricated, vanes are aligned within
1
/ 4 ". However,
vane alignment on motorized shadings will change with use and cannot be
guaranteed after shipment.

CARE

Removing the Shading
■Move each lever of the installation brackets to the
left to release the shading.
➤A flat blade screwdriver can be used to move
the lever.
CAUTION: Be very careful not to tear or
damage any of thefabric.
➤If the lever is inaccessible or
inoperable, lower the shading until
you can see the underside of the
bracket. Carefully reach a small
flat blade screwdriver behind the
shading to the tab on bottom of the
bracket between the screw holes.
➤Push the tab away from the shading
and pull the headrail to release it
from the bracket.
■Carefully pull the headrail to remove it
from the brackets.
■Disconnect the power wires to remove
the shading from the window.
Cleaning Procedures
Silhouette®Window Shadings are made of 100% polyester, which means they are inherently
durable and resilient. However, care must be taken to avoid wrinkling the fabric, particularly
where the vanes meet the facings.
The Palette®Fabric-Covered Headrail
■Spot-clean the headrail using a sponge or delicate cloth, cool distilled water, and a mild
soap solution; handle with care as you would any fine fabric.
Dusting
■Regular light dusting with a feather duster is all the cleaning is needed in most
circumstances.
Vacuuming
■Use a low suction, hand-held vacuum for more thorough dust removal.
Forced Air
■Blow away dirt and debris between the vanes using clean compressed air.

Spot-Cleaning
■Do not spot-clean anything other than the Palette®Fabric-Covered Headrail on Silhouette®
Window Shadings.
Ultrasonic Cleaning
Silhouette Window Shadings can be ultrasonically cleaned by a professional, with the
exception of all Bon Soir™fabrics, Brio™, ClearView™Originale™, ClearView Tapestry™,
India Silk, The Matisse Collection®, and Mystere.
■Specify that a mild detergent solution be used.
■Never immerse the headrail in the solution.
■Dry the shading completely in the lowered position.
Injection/Extraction
Silhouette Window Shadings can be professionally cleaned using the injection/extraction method.
■Use only the dry method of injection/extraction for Bon Soir fabrics.
■Never immerse the headrail in the solution.
Electrostatic Cleaning
Do not use electrostatic cleaning wipes on any Silhouette window shadings.
A Note About Hardware for The Alustra®Collection
Gold Radiance™,Silver Reflection™, Bronze Shimmer™, and Champagne Shine™hardware
finishes can be spot-cleaned with luke warm water and a mild soap. Do not use alcohol, baby
wipes or alkaline cleansers. These may stain or destroy the finish.
A Note About Silhouette Fabrics
As with all textiles, Silhouette fabrics are subject to some variations. Slight wrinkling, puckering,
or bowing is inherent to this textile product and should be considered normal, acceptable quality.
These characteristics are not usually visible from the front or rear butmay be visible from a
sideangle.
Precautions should be taken to reduce exposure to harsh environmental elements, such as
salt air. Continuous exposure through open windows and doors will accelerate the fabric
deterioration.
