1.1
Introduction
Thoroughly read this manual before operating the equipment and comply with the
instructions. Always display the manual in a conspicuous location.
Personal injury and property damage incurred due to non-compliance with these
safety instructions are not covered by the product liability regulations.

indicates an immediate hazard which, if not avoided, will result in death or severe

1.3
Intended Use
•The emission tester is intended exclusively for the sampling and analysis of
vehicle exhaust gases.
•The maximum exhaust gas temperature during use of the supplied probe is
250 °C.
•The maximum exhaust gas temperature during use of the optionally available
high-temperature probe is 750 °C.
•The operating temperature is between 5 and 45 °C.
•The unit is not suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres or use in
washing bays. The unit must be protected from moisture and humidity at all
times.
•The unit may not be modified without express written permission by the
manufacturer. Non-compliance invalidates the declaration of conformity.
1.4
Requirements on Operating and Service Personnel
WARNING
All persons employed in the operation, maintenance, installation, removal and dis-
posal of the device must
•be at least 18 years old,
•be mentally and physically suited for these activities,
•be demonstrably trained and instructed in writing,
•have read and understood the operating instructions, especially the instruc-
tions what to do in the event of defects or malfunctions,
•be on record as having been instructed in safety guidelines,
•have practical experience in working with vehicle lifts and the hazards inherent
in such equipment.

Safety Instructions
DANGER
•Danger of burns on hot exhaust probe! Only hold the probe with the handle
specifically intended for this purpose!
•Danger of carbon monoxide poisoning from vehicle exhaust fumes! The oper-
ator must ensure that any exhaust emission tests are only performed in spac-
es with adequate exhaust gas extraction and ventilation.
•The same applies to the exhaust fumes sample removed for the exhaust
emission test. The operator must ensure that this partial exhaust flow is also
fed to the extraction system.
•Electric shock hazard! Do not use the heated probe and its power supply unit
if the cable insulation, the plug or the casing of the power supply unit are
damaged.
•When vehicles are being worked on, the safety regulations of the particular
vehicle manufacturer must be observed.
1.6
Important User Information
NOTICE
•Perform servicing on the unit. The information needed for servicing can be
found in the section entitled ‘Servicing’.
•Ensure that none of the unit’s gas outlets are obstructed and that the catch
tank for condensate is connected.
•Ensure that no liquids or other impurities are ever drawn in across the probe.
•The unit continues for 60 s after the measurement to remove damp exhaust
gas. The unit must only be switched off beforehand in exceptional circum-
stances.
•Do not operate the unit in direct sunlight, when it is raining or snowing or in an
atmosphere that is corrosive or contaminated with petrol vapours.
•Do not use the unit in the vicinity of strong electromagnetic sources such as
welding devices, large electric motors or frequency converters.
•If the unit does not display any measurement values during measurement,
check that the probe tubing is not buckled and filter F1 or F2 is not blocked.

Maintenance
The MET 6.x must be serviced in accordance with the specifications given in the
section entitled ‘Servicing’ and the servicing work must be documented in the
servicing log. The following information must be recorded:
•When servicing was performed
•What type of servicing work was performed
•Who performed the servicing
The servicing logs must be kept for five years and made available at each official
calibration.
1.8
Official Calibration
Official calibration of the MET 6.x is a legal requirement. The initial calibration is
performed in the factory. The unit must then be re-calibrated once a year.
The unit must also be re-calibrated if the calibration seal is damaged, as the result
of a software update or repair or the like.

Description of the Unit

With the MET 6.x the following exhaust components can be measured almost
simultaneously:
CO in % vol. MET 6.1 / 6.3
CO2 in % vol. MET 6.1 / 6.3
HC in ppm MET 6.1 / 6.3
O2 in % vol. MET 6.1 / 6.3
Opacity in % MET 6.2 / 6.3
The following values are also calculated:
λMET 6.1 / 6.3
CO corrected in % vol. MET 6.1 / 6.3
Opacity coefficient in m-1 MET 6.1 / 6.3
Soot mass concentration in mg/m3MET 6.2 / 6.3
The unit has a display and a keypad, where approvals allow. With the exception of
calibration, all inputs needed for operation can be entered via the keypad.
To ensure that any official exhaust emission inspection that is performed is
compliant with legal regulations, the unit must be operated via a PC with the
corresponding MAHA Emission Software (MES). In such a case, the MET is
operated from the PC. The software components for specific countries are
described in separate operating instructions.
In this operating manual, instructions are always given for both operating options,
as applicable:
MES:
describes settings applied via the MAHA Emission Software running on the
connected computer.
Display:
describes settings applied directly via the MET's input keys.

Basic Settings
5.1

Date
The unit's date setting is configured before delivery. In accordance with official
calibration regulations, the date must not be altered by the end customer if the
unit is used in connection with the regular technical vehicle inspection as per
section 29 of the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO). Please
contact the customer service department as necessary.

6
Measurement Mode, Operating States and Settings
6.1
Initialisation and Warm-up Phase
When the unit is switched on, the message "Initialisation" is shown in the display
for roughly 10 seconds, while the PCB loads the firmware. As soon as the unit
shows the message "Warming up...", a four-gas measurement can be started.
This measurement is not affected by the warm-up phase.
The opacimeter takes roughly 2.5 minutes to warm up in preparation for
measurement. The warm-up phase is complete when the message "Warming
up..." disappears and the unit displays the main screen.
6.2
Leaktightness Test
A leaktightness test needs to be performed every day. If a measurement is started
before a leaktightness test has been performed, the unit automatically performs a
leaktightness test before the measurement is taken.
Observe the user prompts given in the display or the MES. To seal off the probe,
use the piece of tubing supplied. The test runs automatically, but can also be
triggered manually as required (for example, after the water extractor has been
cleaned).

6.3
Zero Adjustment
The MET checks whether zero-balance adjustment is necessary before each
measurement. If the last zero-balance adjustment was performed more than 8
minutes ago, an adjustment is automatically performed before the measurement.
This involves ambient air being induced through combined particle and activated
carbon filter F2. The measurement values are adjusted as follows:
O220,9 % vol
MET 6.1 / 6.3CO, CO20 % vol
HC to 0 ppm
Opacity, LED on: 0 % MET 6.2 / 6.3
Opacity, LED off: 100 %
The zero-balance adjustment can be triggered manually as required.

overview > Zero-balance adjustment)
Display: Menu > Servicing menu > Zero-balance adjustment
6.4
Residue Hydrocarbon (HC) Test (MET 6.1 / 6.3)
An HC residue test needs to be performed every day. If a measurement is started
before an HC residue test has been performed, the unit automatically performs an
HC residue test before the measurement is taken. This involves inducing ambient
air via the sampling probe and checking that the HC value is below 20 ppm.
Ensure that the probe intakes air with no HC residue. (Remove the probe from the
exhaust.)
The HC residue test can be triggered manually as required.

Measurement
When a measurement is started, the display shows the measurement values
relevant for official calibrations in the top three lines, with additional information in
the bottom line (the information line). You can use the arrow keys to access the
following in the information line:
•Lambda, fuel type
•Soot mass concentration, selected measurement mode
•Engine speed, oil temperature
•Unit status
MES: Otto or diesel > Vehicle diagnosis > Gas values/exhaust diagnosis

6.6
Measurement Mode a/b (Short Probe) and A/B (Long Probe)
In the case of MES operation, the most suitable measurement mode is set
automatically. For a diagnostic measurement, the mode needs to be selected
manually.
MES: Diesel > Vehicle diagnosis > Exhaust diagnosis, diesel > F7 measurement
mode
Display: Menu > Servicing menu > Mode > Confirm
Once the desired mode has been set, select "Exit" to exit the menu. The most
recently selected mode is active. During measurement, the mode is displayed in
the information line.
Measurement modes A and B for use with a long probe are not available for all
countries.
6.7
Fuel Type (MET 6.1 / 6.3)
The lambda calculation needs to be adjusted to suit the fuel type. The following
fuels can be selected: petrol, LPG (liquid gas) and CNG (natural gas).

Initial Operation
Using the unit for the first time involves three steps:
1 Setting up the unit
•To prepare the MET for use, it needs to be placed on a surface with no more
than 20° of inclination.
•Connect the unit to the mains power supply via the desktop power pack in-
cluded in delivery or to the vehicle battery or cigarette lighter via the 12/24V
on-board electrical system (available as an option).
•Attach the tubing of the sampling probe to the unit.
•Connect the unit to a PC via the LAN cable provided.
2 Installing the PC software
The installation of the software and the connection configuration is described in
the technical information "EUROSYSTEM Software for Exhaust Gas Analysers"
(TIE10101_009), which is provided on the installation CD.
3 Configuring the PC–MET and PC–MAHA VCI connections
The establishment of the WiFi connection for configuring the MAHA VCI is
described in the user manual “Establishing and Operating WiFi Networks”
(BA315001_002).

PC–MET Connection Options
The MET can be connected to the PC by using one of the following methods:
1 LAN via TCP/IP
2 WiFi via TCP/IP (optional)
3 CAN interface, only for establishing a connection to an external software and
not in conjunction with WiFi
8.1
LAN Connection
In the most straightforward scenario, there is only one (LAN cable) connection
between the MET and the PC. The PC has not other network connection. If the
PC and the MET are still configured with their factory settings, a network
connection is established automatically when the cable is connected. No
additional configuration is needed.
To connect a PC via an existing network, network knowledge is required.
Important: On delivery, the MET is configured to work as DHCP client!

8.2
WiFi Connection
As an option, the exhaust gas analyser and control PC can also be connected
wirelessly via WiFi. If this option is installed, the MET automatically switches to WiFi
mode when no LAN cable is connected. To operate the WiFi, an access point or a
WiFi stick with appropriate functionality is required.
The MET's WiFi settings are pre-configured before delivery as follows:
SSID: mahawifi
Password: haldenwang
Security: WPA 2 AES
The settings can be changed at the unit or via the MET service tool.

*1 In the case of severe damage, change tubing as a preventative measure.
*2 O-rings and filters are part of the servicing set for annual servicing, part
# 030460 00073 0.
*3 The load that the F1 filters are subjected to is monitored by the unit. At 80%
load, the unit signals that the filter will soon need to be changed. At 100%
load, minimum throughput is no longer guaranteed so measurements are no
longer possible. When the filter is changed, the date of change is saved
simultaneously. The filter should not be used for longer than 12 months. After
12 months, a recommendation to change the filter is shown in the display and
in the MES. Always change both F1 filters at the same time. Filter set, part #
030460 00072 0.
Important:
– Only use the blue or black F1 screw-in filters.
– Only remove the filters from the unit when replacing them against new
ones. Used filters must not be reinstalled into the unit.
*4 The voltage status of the O2sensor is monitored by the unit. At 5 mV, a
recommendation to change the sensor is displayed. At 3 mV, it is no longer
possible to start a 4/5-gas measurement. At lower levels, the sensor voltage
drops by roughly 1 mV per month under normal operating conditions. This
rate may differ significantly if climatic conditions are unfavourable (i.e. high
humidity, extreme temperatures).
*5 Regardless of the messages displayed on the unit, the oxygen sensor must be
changed after 12 months at the latest to ensure trouble-free operation.
*6 The battery (on the main board) is designed to have a service life of 12 years.
MAHA recommends changing the battery after 10 years. The service life may

be significantly shorter if climatic conditions are unfavourable (i.e. high
humidity, extreme temperatures).
9.2
Cleaning the Sampling Probe and Tubing
Soot and condensate collects in the sampling tubing. These residues are removed
as follows:
1 Detach the sampling tubing from the unit.
2 Use compressed air (5 bar max.) to blow out the tubing towards the exhaust
probe until no more condensate and soot comes out.
9.3
Changing the Black F1 Filters
The MET-SERIES is supplied with the black F1 screw-in filters since the produc-
tion date 09/2019.
Maintenance kit contains 2x
1 Open the right maintenance flap
and remove the two F1 filters.
