Information about the PrototypeInformation zum Vorbild

The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) sought out a suitable
electric locomotive as part of the electrification of their
main routes in the 1930s of the 20th century. After extensive
tests this was found in a prototype built by the firm General
Electric with the wheel arrangement 4–6–6–4.
Each of the 6 powered axles on the GG1 was driven by 2 mo-
tors, which together produced a continuous power rating of
about 3,400 kilowatts. An output of just under 6,000 kilowatts
was possible on a short term basis.
The maximum speed of 145 km/h / 90 mph made possible
a fast connection on well-known routes such as between
New York and Washington. The impressive design of the
GG1 came from the young designer of the time Raymond
Loewy and is characterized by elegant, dynamic contours.
While the GG1 was initially designed for passenger service,
it was later used for freight service after changes in the
gear ratio for the traction motors.
Im Rahmen der Elektrifizierung ihrer Hauptstrecken in den
30er-Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde von der Pennsylva-
nia Railroad (PRR) auch eine geeignete Elektrolok gesucht.
Diese fand man nach ausgiebiger Erprobung in einem von
der Firma General Electric hergestellten Prototypen mit der
Achsfolge 4–6–6–4.
Jede der 6 angetriebenen Achsen der GG1 wurde von 2 Mo-
toren angetrieben, die zusammen eine Dauer-Leistung von
gut 3.400 kW abgaben. Kurzzeitig konnte sogar eine Leistung
von bis zu knapp 6.000 kW mobilisiert werden.
Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 145 km/h ermöglichte eine
schnelle Reiseverbindung zum Beispiel auf der bekannten
Strecke zwischen New York und Washington. Das ein-
drucksvolle Design der GG1 stammt von dem damals jungen
Designer R. Loewy und zeichnet sich durch eine elegante,
dynamische Linienführung aus. War die GG1 am Anfang
für den Personenverkehr ausgelegt, so wurde sie später
nach einer Getriebeanpassung auch für den Güterverkehr
verwendet.

Dans le cadre de l’électrification de leurs lignes principales
au cours des années 30 du 20esiècle, la compagnie ferro-
viaire Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) cherchait à se procurer
une locomotive
électrique appropriée. Celle-ci fut trouvée au terme d’une
série abondante d’essais parmi les prototypes à disposition
d’essieux 4–6–6–4 construits par la firme General Electric.
Chacun des 6 essieux entraînés de la GG1 était mû par 2
moteurs, l’ensemble développant une puissance continue
de 3400 kW. Une puissance de 6000 kW pouvait même être
obtenue pendant un court moment.
La vitesse maximale de 145 km/h permettait des liaisons ra-
pides, par exemple sur la ligne bien connue reliant New York
et Washington. Le design impressionnant de la GG1 était
l’œuvre du jeune designer R. Loewy et se distinguait par une
ligne élégante et dynamique. Bien que la GG1 fût destinée
au début à la remorque des trains de voyageurs, elle vit par
la suite son rapport d’engrenages modifié afin de la rendre
apte également à la traction des trains de marchandises.
In de dertigerjaren van de twintigste eeuw werd er door de
Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) in het kader van de elektrifi-
catie van hun hoofdtrajecten ook naar een geschikte E-loc
gezocht. Deze vond men na een uitvoerige test in het, door
de firma General Electric gebouwde, prototype met de
asindeling 4-6-6-4.
Elk van de 6 aangedreven assen van de GG1 werden door 2
motoren aangedreven. Het gezamenlijk afgegeven vermogen
bedroeg goed 3400 kW. Kortstondig kon zelfs een vermogen
van bijna 6000 kW gerealiseerd worden.
De maximumsnelheid van 145 km/h maakte een snelle reis-
verbinding mogelijk, bijv. op het bekende traject tussen New
York en Washington. Het indrukwekkende design van de
GG1 is afkomstig van de toen nog jonge ontwerper R. Loewy
en kenmerkte zich door het elegante, dynamische
lijnenspel. In aanvang was de GG1 bedoeld voor het reizi-
gersverkeer maar later, na een aanpassing in de aandrijving,
werd deze ook voor het goederenverkeer gebruikt .
