6. Properties of the eMOTION XXL
The eMOTION XXL Decoder is a compact and sma -sized driving and function decoder designed for the G-
Sca e garden rai road operation. The decoder features an output for one e ectric motor and 8 programmab e
function outputs.
The eMOTION XXL Decoder has exceptiona driving characteristics in both digita and ana og operation. The
performance in ana og is outstanding and de ivers steady operation from 7 to 8 Vo ts and up. Optiona an
additiona power buffer may be used which e iminates power interruptions on contaminated tracks in digita and
ana og operation.
On which type of layout is the L Decoder to be used?
The eMOTION XXL Decoder supports the operation on a digita y contro ed ayouts according to the NMRA
standards, irrespective of the manufacturer. The use of the internationa y accepted standard of the Nationa
Mode Rai road Association (NMRA) ensures that the eMOTION XXL Decoder works with a NMRA/DCC
compatib e digita centra stations. The eMOTION XXL Decoder may be uti ized according to NMRA/DCC as
we as with regu ar ana og DC.
6.1. General Information Regarding D Systems
In ana og operation the speed of the ocomotive is contro ed by the eve of the track vo tage. A ocomotives
connected to the thrott e wi drive with the same speed and direction. Mu tip e train operation can on y be
accomp ished by separated track sections with separate power supp ies.
A digita y contro ed ayout, however, is powered by a steady track vo tage. This track vo tage is supp ied by an
over ay of digita signa s which carry digita commands for speed and switch commands. A ocomotives and
switches have a decoder with a programmed address, comparab e to a phone number. Thus mu tip e
ocomotives may be contro ed independent y to each other a though they a ocated on the same track. In
addition ight and other functions may be operated comfortab y. The most popu ar digita systems are
NMRA/DCC and Motoro a. These systems are not compatib e because they use different commands.
This means, a ocomotive with a Motoro a decoder may not be used on a NMRA/DCC ayout and vice versa. In
G-Sca e genera y the NMRA/DCC system is used (e.g. LGB® MTS). In addition there are some niche products
as Se ectrix (Trix) or FMZ (F eischmann). Basica y decoders by different manufacturers uti izing the same DCC
system may be operated joint y. A functions ike driving, ight or switch commands are identica . Many systems
however may feature functions additiona to the DCC standard which may on y be used with decoders of the
same manufacturer.
To ensure the proper operation of the decoders, the decoders need to be individua y programmed according to
the CV-tab e. CV stands for configuration variab es and the tab e ho ds the individua data for the properties of a
decoder. CV1 ho ds the address of the decoder; others define the maximum speed, the brightness of a ight
bu b or the braking characteristics of the ocomotive.
P ease find the exp icit ist of a CVs at the end of this manua .
6.2. Operation with LGB® MTS-I, MTS-II and MTS-III
The LGB® MTS digita systems I and II basica y work with 14 speed steps. The third generation of LGB® MTS
supports 28 speed steps, however on y in connection with the DiMAX Navigator. The eMOTION XXL Decoder's
factory defau t setting is 14 speed steps to ensure f aw ess operation with LGB® MTS and other digita systems.
In case you use a LGB® MTS III centra station in connection with a DiMAX Navigator or in case a digita
system is used which supports 28 speed steps, the eMOTION XXL Decoder may be set to 28 speed steps by
changing CV29 according y.
In addition you may have to change the decoder settings for seria or para e function data processing (see
chapter 3.3.1)
