General Information
General Information
Safety Information on Océ VarioStream 8000
■This safety information on the Océ VarioStream 8000 printing systemand on the
Océ Web Buffer will provide you with an overview of the safety-related
guidelines that must be observed during operation.
■This safety information should always be kept near the printing system.
■Reading this safety information does not eliminate the need to observe all the
information and instructions in the user guide and the Help.
■Please also observe the safety directives in the documentation for any
pre-processing and post-processing devices that may be connected.
Intended Purpose
■The printing system is intended solely for printing materials that comply with the
Océ paper specification. It may only be operated using the recommended
consumables and under the prescribed operating conditions.
■The vacuum unit is exclusively intended for storing a continuous paper web in
order to ensure controlled paper web retraction by the printing system.
■The web buffer module is exclusively intended for storing continuous paper webs
between the printing system and post print processing.
■Any use for other purposes is regarded as improper. The manufacturer is not
liable for any damage resulting from improper use. The user alone bears the risk
in this case. The printing system shall only be considered as being used for its
intended purpose if the information and instructions in this documentation are
strictly observed.
Service Personnel
■The printing system must only be operated by trained operators and Océ Service
personnel.
■Do not wear loosely hanging items of clothing. Long hair should be protected.
■Never look directly into an optical fiber cable or optical fiber cable connection.
Laser beams from the cable can injure your eyes.
■Do not smoke or use open flames.
User Guide/Help
■Every printing system is supplied with a user guide. The purpose of the user
guide is to ensure that all work on and with the printing system is performed
safely and correctly. It must be complete and in a readable condition. The user
guide contains safety information that must be strictly observed.
In addition to the user guide, a Help is also available on the operator panel of the
printing system. The Help is updated for each new version of the operator panel.

General Information
All persons who work on or with the printing system must:
■have read and understood the user guide before switching on the printing system
for the first time. If there are any points that are unclear, please ask your Océ
Service contact.
■have the user guide available to them when using the system.
■observe all instructions and information in the user guide and in this safety
information.
Printing System
■Observe all warning and information signs on and in the printing system.
■In emergency situations, the printing system should be switched off immediately
at the main switch.
■Do not attempt to remove protective covers yourself and do not interfere with any
safety devices.
■Keep the operating and maintenance areas around the printing system clear.
■Make sure that no objects or liquids get inside the printing system.
■Should the printing system emit any unusual or conspicuous noises or smells,
switch it off.
■Do not obstruct the cooling ducts of the printing system.
■Make sure that the climatic and environmental conditions in the printing
installation area are in line with specifications.
■Always close all doors and covers with both hands and do not open them during
operation.
■Never hold on to the moving paper during printing.
Consumables and Expendables
■Always use an industrial vacuum cleaner with a grounded suction tube, rubber
nozzle and filter set for fine dust. For larger toner quantities, the industrial
vacuum cleaner must be explosion proof.
■Keep all consumables for the printing system out of the reach of children and
separate from food and drink.
■Observe the safety information for all consumables and expendables.
Transport
■The printing system may only be transported by Service personnel or authorized
transport companies.
Installation
■The printing system may only be assembled and installed by Service personnel.
■The printing system must have a fixed connection or type B plug connection
(complying with VDE directives, EN 60950).

General Information
■Do not route the lines and cables in such a way that they can be stepped on or
tripped over.
■A fume hood should be installed over the fuser module (without a smoke
detector). In very seldom cases, paper that has been caught in the fuser module
may be damaged by the infrared fusing and will begin to smoke. However, even
in this case there is no danger of fire because the affected component is
immediately isolated from the remaining printing system by sealed bulkheads.
This bulkhead is part of a proven safety concept and does not affect the
availability of the printing system after the jammed paper has been removed.
■All printing system accessories and options must comply with statutory
regulations and directives for safety, electromagnetic compatibility,
telecommunications terminal devices as well as with the specifications published
by Océ Printing Systems GmbH.
■The installation of other accessories and options may constitute a violation of
these requirements and directives, and may also damage the printing system.
■Consult Service personnel for details of which accessories and options are
permitted for the printing system.
■With the exception of optical wave guide connections, all data, signaling,
process, measurement and control lines connecting the printing system with
other devices must be properly grounded.
■Data transmission lines should neither be connected nor disconnected during
electrical storms.
Repairs
■Repairs to the printing system must only be carried out by Service personnel.
Access to locked areas and areas that can only be opened with special tools is
reserved for Service. Opening the device without authorization and improperly
effected repairs may put operators at considerable risk.
■The access ticket used by the Service technician ensures that the printing system
cannot be used via a LAN from a remote operator panel during repair work.
Fire
■Poisonous gases can occur in any fire. This also applies to the Océ VarioStream
8000 printing system.
■Self-contained breathing apparatus must be worn when fighting fire or smoke
emission. Notes to this effect should be stored at the fire alarm center and with
the local fire department.

[9] Disposal
This icon means that separate, proper disposal of the compo-
nents at the end of the product service life is obligatory in the
EU Member States. The black bar shows that the regulation
enters into force at midnight on August 13, 2005. Directive:
2002/96/EC.
[10] The "Environmental Protection Use Period (EPUP)", appli-
cable in the People's Republic of China, amounts to 20 years
for the printing system.
This EPUP, which does not cover consumables and expenda-
bles in line with regulations, does not affect liability for de-
fects and offers no special warranty for the printing system.

In these areas, body parts (especially fingers), unprotected
long hair and loose hanging clothing (e.g. ties, jewelry, loose
belts etc.) can be pulled in by the rotating parts of the printing
system, and trapped and crushed.

Store the photoconductor drum away from direct exposure to
light and sunlight.
[14] Wear gloves
Always wear the gloves provided when working with the
photoconductor drum.
[15] Do not touch the photoconductor drum surface.
When working with the photoconductor drum, never touch its
surface.
[16] Only grasp the photoconductor drum by the inside.

tioning of the locks on the replacement cart.

ing system is set to "Stop" and make sure that the
printing system is not being controlled remotely
by another operator panel.
