Replacing a Disk Drive
Note Prior to using this procedure, verify that the seal label located on the bottom
front of the unit reads, “Please read HDD FRU documentation before opening”. If
this statement does not appear on the label, the disk drives in this unit are not
replaceable and the unit must be returned to the manufacturer for service.
The disk drive LED is located on the bezel, as illustrated below:
If a disk drive fails, the status light glows amber.
Determine which Drive has Failed
Use the GuardianOS Admin tool to determine which drive has failed. Navigate to
Storage > Disks/Units to view disk status. In the screen below, Disk 1 has failed or is
offline.

Off Drive is not present.
Blinking green Disk drive installed properly and is active
Solid amber Disk drive installed, but not working correctly

Backup the System Contents
Before replacing the failed disk drive, perform a backup of your system’s contents
using your standard backup application.
Turn Off the Snap Server and Disconnect the Cables
1Press the Power Button
until the Status light blinks
three times (about one
second). Release the button
and wait for the lights to
turn off.
2After you turn off the Snap
Server, the lights remain lit
while the server completes
its shutdown. You must
wait for all of the lights to
turn off before you
disconnect the server from the power source.
Note It is important to shut down your server properly to avoid the possibility of
data corruption.
3Disconnect the power and ethernet cables.
Remove the Cover from the Chassis Assembly
1Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws on the rear of the server.

2Turn the server over and remove the two screws on the underside.
3Return the server to its upright position. Carefully lift the front bezel up and pull
out. A ribbon cable is attached to the front bezel, so do not pull out too far.
4Disconnect the ribbon cable and set the front bezel aside.
5Slide the chassis out of the cover using the tab in the lower left corner (as you are
facing the server); then put the cover aside.

Disconnect the Cables and Remove the Failed Drive
Note If you are replacing Drive #1, you must remove Drive #2 as well as Drive #1.
1Locate the failed drive. As shown in the following illustration, the lower drive is
Drive #1; the upper drive is Drive #2.
2Disconnect the Power (multi-colored) cable and SATA (red) cable. If you are
replacing Drive #1, you must disconnect the cables for both drives.
3To replace Drive #1, remove the SATA cables completely in order to access the
drive.
Caution Remove these cables carefully. The connectors can break if they are bent.

4On each side of the chassis, remove the 2 screws holding the drive in place (4
screws for each drive). If you are replacing Drive #1, you must remove the
screws for both drives.

5Slide the bad drive out of the chassis. You may need to jiggle the drive a little to
get it started. If you are replacing Drive #1, also remove Drive #2 and label it as
the “good” drive.
Insert the New Drive and Replace the Cover
1Slide the new drive into the upper (Drive #2) slot and carefully align the screw
holes on the drive with the holes on the chassis. Screw in the 4 screws for the
drive. If you removed the “good” drive as well, slide it into the Drive #1 slot and
secure it with the 4 screws.
2Reconnect the Power cable(s).
3Reconnect the SATA cable(s). If you removed both SATA cables because you are
replacing Drive #1, be sure that the cables are connected to the correct drives (see
the illustration on page 4 for connections).
4Slide the chassis back into the cover and replace the 2 screws on the back of the
server (see the illustration on page 2).
Note By replacing the back screws first, you ensure that the chassis is fitted
snugly to the back.

5Reconnect the bezel ribbon cable, then fit the bezel hooks into the connecting
grooves on the chassis, taking care not to pinch the ribbon cable. Push the bezel
in and slide down to secure.
6Turn the server over and replace the 2 bottom screws.
Reconnect the Cables and Turn On the Snap Server
1Reconnect the power and ethernet cables.
2Press the Power Button until the Status light turns on, then release the button and
wait for the server to start up.
3When the Status light starts blinking at a steady rate (about once a second), the
startup is complete.
Configure the Replacement Disk Drive
If the failed drive was a member of a 2-drive RAID 0:
1Navigate to the Storage > RAID Sets screen and select the name of the failed
RAID.
2Delete the failed RAID, and then recreate the RAID 0, volumes, etc.
If the failed drive was a standalone RAID 0:
1Navigate to the Storage > RAID Sets screen and select the name of the failed
RAID.
2Delete the failed RAID, and then recreate a single-drive RAID 0, volumes, etc.
If the failed drive was a member of a RAID 1:
1Navigate to the Storage > RAID Sets screen and click the name of the degraded
RAID.
2On the RAID’s Edit screen, click Repair RAID to view the available drive.
3Select the new drive and click Next.
4On the confirmation screen, click Next to return to the RAID’s Edit screen. The
status of the RAID should now read Resyncing and the status of the newly added
drive should read Hot Spare until the resync completes.
