These short instrucons contain an overview of the most important safety and handling instruc-
ons for installing and operang piezo p/lt stages with (hereinaer referred to as "posioner")
with the product codes given above (x: any number).
Subject to change. These short instrucons are superseded by any new release. The latest respec-
ve release is available for download on our website.
Downloading and Reading the Manual
The acons during installaon, startup, and maintenance require addional informaon from the
manuals of the posioner and/or the electronics used.
Manuals may be tled as follows: "User Manual", "Technical Note".
Downloading the Manuals from the Website
1. Open the website www.pi.ws.
2. Search the website for the product number (e.g., C-663.12) or the product family (e.g., PICMA®
Bender).
3. Click the corresponding product to open the product detail page.
4. Click Downloads.
The manuals are shown under Documentaon.
5. Click the desired manual and ll out the enquiry form.

Safety
Intended Use
The posioner is a laboratory device as dened
by DIN EN 61010-1. It is intended for indoor use
and use in an environment that is free of dirt,
oil, and lubricants.
In accordance with its design, the posioner is
intended for precision posioning and align-
ment of a mirror in two orthogonal axes with
a common center of rotaon (parallel kinema-
cs). Some models provide addional vercal
moon. The posioner is not intended for
applicaons in areas, in which a failure would
present severe risks to human beings or the
environment.
The intended use of the posioner is only pos-
sible when completely installed and connected,
and in conjuncon with suitable electronics.
The posioner may only be installed, operated,
maintained, and cleaned by authorized and
appropriately qualied personnel.
General Safety Instrucons
The posioner is built according to state-of-
the-art technology and recognized safety
standards. Improper use of the posioner may
result in personal injury and/or damage to the
posioner. The operator is responsible for cor-
rect installaon and operaon of the posioner.
XOnly use the posioner for its intended
purpose, and only use it if it is in perfect
condion.
XRead the user manual.
XImmediately eliminate any faults and mal-
funcons that are likely to aect safety.
XDo not open the posioner.
The posioner is maintenance-free and achie-
ves its posioning accuracy as a result of the
opmum alignment of mechanical components
and piezo actuators. Loosened screws cause a
loss in posioning accuracy.
XOnly loosen screws according to the in-
strucons in the manual.
XDo not open the posioner.
Installaon
Temperature changes and compressive stress
can induce charges in the posioner. Aer
disconnecon from the electronics, the piezo
actuators can remain charged for several hours.
Touching charged parts can result in minor
injuries from electric shock.
XDo not touch the contacts in the connector.
XBefore mounng, connect the posioner
to the switched-o electronics for a few
seconds to discharge it.
XIf possible: Secure the connectors with
screws against being pulled out.
XDo not pull connectors out of the electro-
nics during operaon.
XIf the connecng cable is accidentally pul-
led out of the posioner during operaon:
Switch o the electronics before you recon-
nect the posioner.
Mechanical forces can damage or misalign the
posioner.
XAvoid shocks and drops.
XObserve the maximum permissible forces
and torques (see manual).
XIf a mirror holder is to be used: Clamp the
mirror holder above the exure only.
XDo not allow adhesive to get into the
posioner.
XOnly ship the posioner in the original
packaging.
If the posioner is vacuum-compable, aen-
on must be paid to cleanliness.
XOnly touch the posioner with powder-free
gloves.
XIf necessary: Wipe the posioner to clean it.
Incorrectly ed screws can cause damage.
XSelect the screw length according to the
depth of the mounng holes.
XS-325 only: Do not use the holes in the
moon plaorm.
Unsuitable mounng can warp the posioner
and reduce the accuracy.
XMount the posioner on an even surface
with similar thermal expansion properes
(for recommended atness, see manual).

Mirrors not xed centrically can damage the
posioner.
XFor dynamic applicaons, mount the mirror
as near to the center as possible to prevent
uneven loading of the exures and, as a
whole, the posioner.
XRecommended eccentricity: 0.25 mm
Operang voltages that are excessively high or
incorrectly connected can cause damage to the
posioner.
XObserve the operang voltage range of the
posioner (see manual).
XObserve the correct pin assignment.
Excessively fast discharging can destroy the
piezo actuators of the posioner.
XDischarge the posioner only according to
the instrucons in the manual.
Startup
If a protecve earth conductor is not properly
connected, touching the posioner in the case
of malfuncon can result in minor injuries from
electric shock.
XOnly operate the posioner with a properly
connected protecve earth conductor.
XDo not remove the protecve earth con-
ductor from the posioner during opera-
on.
XObserve the applicable standards for aa-
ching the protecve earth conductor .
The surface of the posioner and the sur-
rounding area can heat up during operaon.
Touching the posioner and surrounding parts
can result in minor injuries from burning. The
heat produced during operaon can aect your
applicaon.
XIf possible: Cool the posioner suciently.
XIf necessary: Install touch protecon.
XIf sucient cooling and protecon against
contact are not possible: Mark the danger
zone in accordance with the legal regula-
ons.
XInstall the posioner so that your applica-
on is not aected by the dissipang heat.
Moisture, liquids, and electrically conducve
materials (e.g., metal dust) that penetrates
the posioner, as well as surroundings with
increased conducvity, can destroy the piezo
actuators of the posioner.
XOnly operate the posioner within the per-
missible ambient condions (see manual).
XDo not operate a vacuum-compable posi-
oner during evacuaon.
Uncontrolled oscillaon can damage your appli-
caon or the posioner.
XIf oscillaon occurs, switch o the servo
mode or stop the posioner immediately.
XCheck the sengs of the servo-control
parameters (see the manual for the elec-
tronics).
Operaon
Connuously high voltages can reduce the
lifeme of the posioner.
XKeep the maximum operang voltage as
low as possible during operaon.
XDischarge the posioner appropriately
when it is not in use.

Mounng the Mirror
NOTICE!
Incorrect mounng of a mirror or mirror
holder can damage the posioner and
reduce the posioning accuracy.
XClamp the mirror holder above the
exure only.
XUse a suitable mirror and adhesive.
XDo not allow adhesive to get into the
posioner.
XS-325 only: Do not use the holes in
the moon plaorm.
Tools and Accessories
▪Suitable adhesive, e.g., two-component
epoxy resin that hardens at room tempera-
ture and is insensive to shear forces
▪Suitable mirror with thermal expansion
properes as similar as possible to the
moon plaorm, maximum 25.4 mm or 1“
diameter
▪If necessary: Suitable mirror holder with
thermal expansion properes as similar to
the moon plaorm as possible
▪Suitable template for applying the adhesive
(not standard accessory)
▪Suitable centering aid for aligning the mir-
ror (not standard accessory)

Mounng the Posioner
and the Protecve Earth
Conductor
Requirements
✔The posioner is not connected to the
electronics.
✔You have provided a suitable mechanical
mounng (see manual).
✔If the protecve earth conductor is
connected via the mechanical mounng:
The mechanical mounng and the screws
used are suciently conducve and the
mechanical mounng is connected to the
protecve earth conductor.
✔The cross secon of the protecve earth
conductor is at least 0.75 mm².
✔The contact resistance at all protecve
earth connecons is <0.1 Ω at 25 A.
Connecng the Posioner via a
Separate Protecve Earth Connecon
If a separate protecve earth connecon is
available, it must be used.
a. Protecve earth connecon in the base
body of the posioner
b. Safety washer
c. Flat washer
d. Cable lug of the protecve earth conductor
e. M4 screw
1. Fasten a suitable cable lug to the protecve
earth conductor.
2. Ax the cable lug of the protecve earth
conductor to the protecve earth connec-
on using the screw set supplied.
3. Tighten the screw with at least three turns
and a torque of 1.2 Nm to 1.5 Nm.

Mounng the Posioner
If there is no separate protecve earth con-
necon, the posioner must be mounted on
a surface or a mounng that is electrically
conducve and connected to protecve earth
conductor.
NOTICE!
Despite its solid and robust appearance,
the posioner is a highly sensive and
fragile system.
XAvoid subjecng the posioner to
force and torque.
XDo not allow the posioner to fall or
p over.

Mounng with a Clamp
1. Allow a gap of at least 5 mm between the
holder and the exures.
2. Clamp the posioner with maximum of
100 N clamping force.
3. Check that the posioner is axed rmly.
Mounng with Screws
1. Mount the posioner from above (a, certa-
in models only) or from below (b) using all
mounng holes provided.
2. Tighten the screws with at least three turns.
3. Check that the posioner is axed rmly.
Starng up the Posioner
CAUTION!
If a protecve earth conductor is not pro-
perly connected, touching the posioner
in the case of malfuncon can result in
minor injuries from electric shock.
XOnly operate the posioner with a
properly connected protecve earth
conductor.
XObserve the applicable standards
for aaching the protecve earth
conductor .

raon are in the manual of the electronics used.

Old Equipment Disposal
In accordance with EU law, electrical and
electronic equipment may not be disposed of
in EU member states via the municipal residual
waste.
Dispose of your old equipment according to
internaonal, naonal, and local rules and
regulaons.
PI undertakes environmentally correct and free
disposal of all old PI equipment made available
to the market aer 13 August 2005.
If you have an old device from PI, you can send
it to PI free of charge.
