INTRODUCTION
The REER AD SR2 interface is a safety device that satisfies the
requirements of standard IEC 61496 – 1. When connected to one or two
photoelectric safety barriers equipped with PNP semiconductor outputs
and, where applicable, to a one or two-way safety switch, it performs
additional functions such as start/restart – interlocking and controlling
any external contactors.
The interface ensures that:
•output lines are open if the barriers are intercepted;
•if the RESTART contact remains closed in manual mode
this is not interpreted as AUTO mode.
The interface is also capable of controlling two external relays
(connected to its outputs) and uses the input of the K1/K2 feedback to
check that these operate in safety.
+The AD SR2 interface, when connected to one (or two) type 4 photoelectric
safety barriers certified to IEC 61496 – 1/2 standard, equipped with two built-in
solid-state PNP outputs, conforms to ESPE (Electro-Sensitive Protective
Equipment) type 4.
+If all the other characteristics specified above remain unchanged, but a type 2
barrier is used, the whole ESPE will also be type 2.
+When deciding on the safety category to be adopted, carefully consider the
risks analysis of the machine.
+The interface has been designed in particular for use with the REERlight
curtains of the Admiral (type 4) and Vision (type 2) series. Consult REER
before using the interface with other light curtain models or safety devices.
+For safe use of the device, it is essential to read and understand the contents
of this handbook.
+Failure to comply with the prescriptions indicated in this handbook may result
in very high risks for the operating personnel of the machine protected.

OPERATING MODES
AUTOMATIC
In this operating mode, the outputs of the safety interface follow the
status of the light curtain:
•with the protected area free (outputs of the light curtain
active), the relay outputs of the interface are active.
•with the protected area occupied (outputs of the light curtain
de-activated), the relay outputs of the interface are
de-activated.

+Use in manual mode (start/restart interlock activated) is mandatory in the case
in which the safety device controls an access protecting a danger zone and
once a person has passed through the opening, he/she may remain in the
danger zone without being detected (use as trip device according to
IEC 61496). Failure to comply with this rule may result in very serious risks for
the persons exposed.
+Check correct functioning of the entire safety system (interface + light curtain)
following each re-installation. In particular, if the original operating mode was
Manual, check that the unit has been reconfigured in this mode.
MANUAL
In this operating mode, the outputs of the safety interface are activated
only if the protected area is free and after sending the RESTART signal
to the interface using the push-button or by means of a specific
command on the RESTART input (terminal 6).

Once the protected area has been occupied, the relay outputs are de-
activated. The sequence described above must be repeated in order to
re-activate these.
The RESTART command is active with a voltage of 24 Vdc.
The minimum duration of the command is 300 ms.

CONNECTION OF EXTERNAL CONTACTORS K1 and K2
Control of external contactors K1/K2 can be activated in both operating
modes. If this control is to be used, the set of normally closed and
normally open ed contacts of the external contactors must be connected
to terminal 13 of the interface (figures 3 and 4).

INSTALLATION AND ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
+The AD SR2 safety interface must be installed in an environment with at least
IP54 protection.
+The voltage supplied to the AD SR2 interface must be of the FELV (Functional
Extra Low Voltage) 24VDC ±±20% type.
+During installation, take care not to short-circuit terminals 7, 8, 10 and 11 on
the AD SR2 interface.
+If connecting one barrier only, bring inputs that are not used (8 and 11)
to +24VDC.
The safety switch.
The system moves to BREAK status (output relays open) when the
safety switch (e.g. emergency pushbutton, safety limit switch),
connected as illustrated in the electrical diagrams on pages 4, 5, 6, is
opened. The switch must respond to the following specifications:
•2 N/C contact blocks connected mechanically.
•Release action to control contact opening.
•There must never be more than a 500msec delay between
both contacts in the switch closing; if that is not the case, the
interface moves to FAIL.
The interface can only restart (GUARD) after resetting the switch (with
the barrier clear).
+Should risk analysis regarding dangerous machinery authorize the use of a
safety switch with ONLY 1 N/C CONTACT (e.g. terminal 9 connected to +24VDC
or terminal 12 earthed), set both sections of the dip-switch (1) to ON (figure 5).
In that case, the test circuit for that specific safety switch will no longer
conform to EN 954-1 type 4.
+If using a safety switch with ONLY 1 N/C CONTACT, terminal 9 must be used
(to +24VDC). Terminal 12 must be left open.
+If the safety switch is not used, connect terminal 9 to +24VDC and terminal 12
to 0Vdc (dip-switch to OFF).

The RESTART command.
•The RESTART command must be sent to the safety interface by
connecting terminal 6 to the +24VDC.
•The contact used for the RESTART command must be
capable of switching 24VDC and 20mA (and guarantee a
closing time of > 300ms). This point is particularly important
when the RESTART command is managed automatically,
using a PLC for example.
•The system restarts within 300ms from sending a RESTART
command (in MANUAL mode). This means that the output circuit
cannot be energized before that time.
•To calculate the SYSTEM RESTART DELAY, add the restart
delay for any external K1/K2 contactors to the AD SR2
interface restart delay (300ms).
•In case of manual operation, an external N/O switch can be
used that, when temporarily closed, generates the RESTART
command.
+The Restart command must be located outside the danger zone, in a place
from which the danger zone and the entire work area concerned are
clearly visible.
+The controls must not be accessible from inside the danger zone.
The CLEAR output.
The interface supplies a voltage (idle) of +24VDC to the CLEAR output
(terminal 15) when the barriers are clear and the relays de-energized.
This output is internally protected to supply a maximum current of
100mA.
Characteristics of the output circuit.
The safety interface uses two safety relays with force guided contacts for
the output circuit.
To ensure correct insulation and avoid damage or premature ageing,
protect each output line with a delayed 4A fuse and check that the load
characteristics comply with the indications shown in the following table.

Use of K1 and K2 auxiliary contact elements.
For loads with higher voltage and current characteristics than those
indicated in the table above, use of auxiliary external relays or contactors
suitable for the load to be controlled is recommended.
+If the K1 K2 Feedback is used, The K1 and K2 auxiliary contactors or relays
must be of the guided contact safety type.
•Referring to the table below, pay particular attention to the
configuration of the control contacts on terminal 11 and that
of the contacts of use.

•Control contacts K1-1 and K2-1 (terminal 13) must be able to
switch a current of 20mA and a voltage of 24Vdc.
•To increase the electrical life of internal relays A and B, it is
advisable to use anti-disturbance devices which must be
connected across the coils of K1 and K2.
Warnings regarding the connection cables.
•For light curtain/safety interface connections of more than
50m, cables with a cross-section of at least 1mm2must be
used.
•It is good practice to separate the power supply of the safety
interface from that of other electrical appliances (electrical motors,
inverters, frequency variators) or other sources of disturbance.
•The path of the connection cables between the safety
interface ands the sensors, the connection referring to the test
command and feedback contacts connected to terminal 13
must be different from that of other power cables.

WARRANTY
REER warrants that each AD SR2 unit in new ex-factory condition, in
conditions of normal use, is free of defects in the materials and of
manufacturing defects for a period of 12 (twelve) months.
In this period, REER undertakes to eliminate any faults in the product
through repair or replacement of the faulty parts, completely free of
charge as regards material and labor.
However, REER reserves the right to replace the entire faulty appliance
with another equivalent appliance or with the same characteristics
instead of repairing this.
Validity of this warranty is regulated by the following conditions:
•The user must inform REER of the fault within twelve months
from the date of delivery of the product.
•The appliance and its components must be in the conditions
in which they were delivered by REER.
•The serial numbers must be clearly legible.
•The fault or defect has not been caused directly or indirectly
by:
–Improper use;
–Non-compliance with instructions for use;
–Carelessness, inexperience, incorrect maintenance;
–Repairs, modifications, adaptations not carried out by
REER personnel, tampering, etc.;
–Accidents or impacts (also due to transportation or
causes of force majeure);
–Other causes not to be ascribed to REER.
Repairs will be carried out at the REER laboratories to which the material
must be delivered or dispatched: transport risks and the risks of any
damage or loss of the material during shipment are the responsibility of
the user.
All products and components replaced become the property of REER.
REER does not recognize any other warranties or rights except for those
specifically described above; therefore, no claims for damages may be
submitted for expenses, interruption of business or other factors or
circumstances in any way related to failure of the product or of one of its
parts.
Precise, complete compliance with all the rules, instructions and prohibitions indicated in this
handbook is an essential requirement for correct functioning of the safety interface.
REER s.p.a. therefore declines any responsibility for all and anything resulting from failure to
comply, even partially, with such indications.
