Operation of the rake before reading the operator’s manual
carefully as well as operating by the unauthorized staff, especially

CAUTION:
It is forbidden to drive the machine on public roads with damaged, illegible
or missing identification plates.
2. INTRODUCTION
 This operator’s manual should be considered as the basic rake’s equipment. If the rake is handed
over to another operator, it should be in working condition and given away along with
operator’s manual and it’s other basic equipment.
 Operator’s manual is attached to every machine in order that the operator can familiarize
himself with design, working principles, service and adjustment of the rake. The user of the rake
should be familiar with common safety rules and procedures.
 The rake is manufactured according to international safety rules.
 Compliance with the warnings in this operator’s manual will ensure safe operation.
 Please contact your dealer if you have any queries relating to the operation and service of
the rake.
 This operator’s manual is an indispensable part of any machine and is intended to familiarize
future user with principles of proper operation and use of the machine as well as the risks
involved.

3. PROPER USE
SaMASZ rotary rake is designed for raking forage, dry forage and hay. The machine
cooperates with tractors with power from 60 HP. Rotary rake can only be used by people familiar
with its technical data, danger situations that may occur during operation and how to avoid them.
CAUTION:
Use of the rake for other purposes than the above mentioned is forbidden.
Different use than the above mentioned will be considered as improper and
may lead to revoking of the warranty.
Rake should be used, operated and repaired only by people familiarized with
its detailed specifications and with safety rules and regulations. Willful
changes of the rake will lead to revoking of the warranty.

Support leg
The hitch (1) enables attaching the rake to tractor’s lower pins. The driver from tractors PTO
is transmitted by means of PTO shaft placed inside the main frame of the rake (2) on an intersecting
axis gear and then by means of shafts (3) on rotor gearboxes (4). On a rotor there are arms
mounted (5), to which the arms with tines are attached (6). On the arms there are safety guards (7).
During transport outside arms are taken off and placed inside the holders (9); put the tine
protections (8). Adjustment levers (10) are used to regulate the height of raking. The rake is
equipped with a curtain (11), which formulates a windrow. Under the rotor gearboxes rake trolleys
(12) are mounted.
3.3. Standard equipment and spare parts
The rakes are sold with the following standard equipment:
 warranty card,
 operator’s manual with spare parts list and Declaration of Conformity,
 PTO shaft,
 warning plates with LED lights,
 working width adjustment (mechanical in Z2-780, hydraulic in Z2-840),
 spray paint (150 ml).

PTO shafts of other brands with equivalent parameters could be used after SaMASZ
permission.
CAUTION:
Lubricate the PTO shaft with high quality multi-purpose grease every
50 shaft operating hours. If access holes are available, lubricate fittings
through access holes. See decal on guard if applicable (Fig. 3).

4. SAFETY ADVICE
4.1. Safety rules and regulations
 During operation of the rake the Regulation of the Farm Ministry and Food Economy
(Rozporządzenie Ministra Rolnictwa i Gospodarki Żywnościowej) from 12-01-1998 dealing
with safety and hygiene during the operation of tractors, machinery, tools and equipment used
for farming (Dz. U. Nr 12/98 poz. 51), should be observed.
 Front axis of the tractor should be weighted to keep the balance. If need be, use front wheel
weights.
 When driving on public roads always comply with local traffic regulations, especially
concerning warning lights.
 Operation without safety guards as well as with the damaged or raised guards is not allowed
(danger of the stones, etc. being thrown out).
 Raking can only be started after the power take-off reaches a nominal PTO speed.
 Nobody is allowed to remain within the danger area of at least 50 m. Particular caution is
necessary when operating near roads and in stoney areas.

 Any maintenance and adjustment work should only be done after the drive has been
disconnected and when the rotors have come to the complete standstill.
CAUTION:
All service and repair operations must be done only after the tractor engine
has been stopped, all rotating parts have come to the complete standstill.
CAUTION:
Be certain that children and animals are at a safe distance away from the
machine. Never allow anyone to ride on a machine or tractor.
 When in standstill the machine should be protected against unauthorized use with a padlock
mounted on hitch pin (Fig. 28).
 The bolts and other fasteners have to be periodically checked and, if necessary, tightened or
replaced. DO NOT work with damaged or worn fasteners.
 Make sure that locking pawl line in the tractor cabin is mounted with relevant slack.
 When operating the rake, the tractor should always be equipped with the cabin.
 Rake should not be operated when the tractor-rake set is not balanced.
 Never start the rake when it is lifted.
 Never start the rake, when people or animals are near the machine.
 Always comply with the safety decals describing hazards, and warning signs placed on
the machine.
 Before you start the tractor make sure that every other drives are turned off and the levers
steering hydraulics are in neutral position.
 Never leave the tractor’s engine running without supervision. Before you leave the tractor,
lower work assemblies in the ground, turn off the engine and put off the key from tractor’s
ignition switch.
 Do not approach moving jointed connections of hitches when in operation.
 It is forbidden to operate the rake when driving backwards.
 Never get on the rake in any case.
 Never lift the rake on tractor’s 3-point linkage when the drive is on and the rotors are rotating.
 Keep away from the area between tractor and the machine, before tractor-rake set is secured
against moving by the tractor’s brake.
 Every maintenance work and regulations can be done only when the rake is on the ground.
 If any maintenance work or regulation under lifted rake is needed, it must be secured against
falling.
 When the parts of the rake need replacement, use only original spare parts according to spare
parts list.
 The rake should be stored under roofed places and in the way that it will not harm people or
animals.
 Do not leave agricultural machinery on slopes or other descents without providing protection
against its free runaway.
 Due to risk of tipping, it is not permissible to fold rotors for work on cants (across the slope).
Setting the machine should be performed on an even ground or upwards/down the slope.

 When operating over a stony field or nearby roads there exists a risk of throwing out stones or
other objects, which may pose a danger for passing-by vehicles on the road or for passers-by.
Therefore keep the safe distance.
 Rotating spring tines and other rotary elements present a danger to health and life of persons
present nearby the machine. Do not touch any moving machine parts.
 The operator is not allowed to leave the tractor while driving.
 Prior to approaching operation with the machine, make sure that all safety guards are not
damaged and fitted in place. It is forbidden to operate with missing or damaged guards.
 Pressure in the machine's wheels should be check regularly and held constant.
 Repair works at wheels should be carried out by personnel who are trained and competent in
this respect, using appropriate tools.
 In the event of any break in the equipment operation, turn off the drive.
 Bear in mind that when operating and transporting the machine in areas where high voltage
lines are present, special caution should be exercised due to possibility of contacting the
aggregate with the lines.
 When used in storm, the machine is exposed to lightning.
 Prior to performing any maintenance works, assembly, disassembly, set the machine onto a
stable ground and protect against unintentional shifting.
 When cleaning the machine, use personal protective equipment for health protection.
 In case of a fatal failure, stop the machine's drive, turn the tractor's engine off and take out the
ignition key. Then call for technical service, and if an accident (in this case: road accident)
occurs, respect first aid rules and contact responsible authorities.
 Rake should be kept clean to avoid risk of fire.
 Allow no person and object to remain on the machine when driving or transporting.
 When taking turns pay particular attention and consider weight and dimensions of the machine.
4.2. Qualifications of operator
To provide safe machine operation each person being the machine operator must meet the
following requirements:
 Operator should hold driving license, have ability to drive vehicles safely and know road traffic
rules.
 Operator must be in proper physical condition to be able to operate the machine.
 Operator must not be under the influence of alcohol, drugs and medicines, which all have
influence on vehicle driving and machine operation.
 Operator should be familiarized with this manual and follow its provisions.
 Operator should be familiar with working principles of both the tractor and the machine, and be
able to recognize and avoid hazards resulting from operation of the aggregate.
4.3. Mounting rake onto tractor
 Prior to the mounting operation, check whether the tractor's and the mower's hitch categories
are compatible and make sure that tractor's hitch load is adequate for the machine aggregated.
 Prior to mounting the machine, examine technical condition of the rake’s hitch assembly and
tractor's 3-point linkage.
 Use only genuine pins and cotters to mount the mower on a tractor.

 Once the machine is mounted on tractor check stability and manoeuvrability of the latter. Load
on the front axle should be approx. 20% of the weight of tractor. Otherwise, ballast front of the
tractor.
4.4. Transport
 Every position change of the rake can only be done when there is nobody around (pay particular
attention to children).
 Before putting the rake to transport position make sure, that the tractor’s PTO is turned off and
all the rotating parts have come to complete standstill.
 During transport always put the rake to transport position. See chapter 5.2.
 Before transporting the rake make sure that mechanical locking pawls are properly locked on
pins.
 Before transporting the rake make sure that support legs are lifted and protected.
 For the transport period put warning plate with combined lights and reflectors and warning
triangle on the rake.
 Driving speed should always be adjusted to road conditions and local traffic regulations.
 Permissible speed is 30 km/h (17 mph) and it cannot be exceeded.
4.4.1. Putting the rake onto another vehicle for transport
The driver and the carrier are responsible for rake’s transport safety. Equipment and parts
must be secured during transport.
To put the rake onto another vehicle in a safe way, please obey the following rules:
 seize the rake by any lifting devices only in the places indicated by the hook sign (Fig. 4),
 for rake lifting use only lifting devices with hoisting capacity bigger than rake’s weight shown
in data plate. It also concerns ropes and chains used for lifting,
 transport belts, belt suspensions, ropes cannot be damaged. Whenever damages to these parts
are spotted replace these with new ones,
 when mounting slings, chains, handles etc. always pay attention to setting the machine's centre
of gravity properly,
 to catch machines, pick ropes of adequate length, so that the angle between them is no greater
than 120°, and the angle between the strand and the vertical is no greater than 60°,
 collapsible parts should be blocked in transport position,
 during putting the rake onto another vehicle it is forbidden for anybody to remain in transport
area,
 on the vehicle’s trailer the machine should be secured against moving.
CAUTION:
Securing maneuvering area and transport of the rake is the responsibility of a
person who does it.

4.5. Working parts
 Before operating the rake check tine’s condition.
 Worn or damaged tines should be immediately replaced with new one.
CAUTION:
During replacement of working parts, it should be used personal protective
gloves.
4.6. PTO shaft
 Before operating learn provisions found in bar manufacturer's manual placed on the bar.
 Use only PTO shafts recommended by rake’s manufacturer.
 Pay particular attention to PTO shaft’s guards and rake’s and tractor’s spline shaft guards.
Never work with damaged guards.
 In order to operate safely use only fully technically fit, undamaged PTO shafts. Damaged PTO
shaft shall be repaired or replaced with new one.
 Before operation, check all guards (in tractor, machine and the shaft), if they are in place and are
functional. Any worn or damaged guard must be replaced. Damaged or missing guard of drive
shaft may cause serious accident and even death.
 Possible inclination of the shaft depends on shape and size of the guard. Before operation check
if guards in any position are not damaged or locked.
 The shaft should be disconnected from the machine if steering angle is too much.
 Before any operation make sure whether PTO rpm have proper rotational direction.

4.7. Hydraulic assembly
 Caution! Hydraulic assembly is under pressure! Hydraulic oil under pressure may permeate
through skin and cause serious injury, therefore skin and eyes should be protected in particular.
In case of injuries caused by a liquid under pressure, call a doctor immediately.
 Hydraulic hoses can be connected to tractor's hydraulics, provided that both the tractor’s and
the tedder's hydraulic assemblies are not under pressure. To remove the pressure from the hoses
just simply restart the tractor's hydraulic valves several times, once the tractor is off.
 When dismounting the machine from the tractor, set the equipment aside, deflate the pressure
from hydraulics and turn tractor's engine off.
 When controlling for hydraulic assembly's malfunction and looking for oil leaks, it is forbidden
to touch any potential leaks until the entire assembly is under pressure.
 Note! It is recommended that the hydraulic oil used should not exceed 10 oil purity class
in accordance with NAS 1638.
When using hydraulic hoses:
 Avoid stretching the hoses when operating.
 Do not allow hydraulic hoses to get deflected.
 Do not expose hydraulic hoses to contact with any sharp edges.
 If damaged or worn, replace the hoses with new ones.
 Useful life for hydraulic hoses is 5 years from their production date.
4.8. Residual risk
Despite the fact, that company SaMASZ the manufacturer of the rake takes responsibility for
design and manufacturing of the rake, in order to eliminate dangerous situations, certain risk during
rake’s operation is unavoidable.
Major source of risk follows performance of these operations:
 operation of rake by minors as well as not being familiarized with operator's manual,
 operation of rake by persons under influence of alcohol or other abusive substances,
 not keeping caution while transportation and shifting of rake during operation,
 transport of persons remaining on the machine,
 presence of persons and animals within the rake operation range,
 performing operations related to servicing and adjustment with engine on.
4.8.1. Danger of catching
This kind of risk occurs during changing the position of a rake, operation near rotating parts,
working without safety guards.
During operation, maintenance and regulations always wear protective gloves, shoes and
clothes without loose parts, belts and so on. Always comply with safety decals placed on the rake.
4.8.2. Danger of injury and abrasion
This kind of risk occurs during: replacement of working parts with sharp edges, cleaning the
machine, removing the clogging and jams, repair works of wheels. During any maintenance work
always use safety gloves.
4.8.3. Danger of liquid ejection out of hydraulic system
During connection of hydraulic hoses to hydraulic connectors make sure, that either tractor’s
or tedder’s hydraulic system is without pressure.

During operation of hydraulic system always wear protective glasses and gloves. Check
regularly hydraulic hoses.
CAUTION:
Residual risk results from incorrect behaviour of the rake's operator.
4.8.4. Bans
Please bear in mind the following bans during rake’s operation:
 never unblock the rake, make any regulations or repairs of the rake while it is in motion,
 never change the order of operation and maintenance activities described in operator’s manual,
 never operate the rake when it is not in working order or has damaged safety guards,
 never get your hands and legs close to rotating parts of the rake,
 during repair and maintenance of the rake always comply with the descriptions included in
operator’s manual. Always do these activities when the tractor’s drive is off,
 before you start any activities, focus your attention on them,
 never operate the rake under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or strong medicines,
 your clothes should not be too loose, or too tight. Too loose cloth parts may be pulled in by
the rotating parts of the rake,
 the rake cannot be operated by children or by handicapped people.
When describing residual risk, the rake is treated as a machine, that up to the moment of its
putting in motion it had been designed and manufactured according to technology level actual till
the day of rake’s manufacture.
CAUTION:
Despite following the specified instructions and prohibitions, residual risk is
still present.
4.8.5. Residual risk assessment
When keeping such recommendations as:
 thorough familiarizing with operator’s manual,
 no persons remaining on the machine when operating and during drives,
 no persons remaining within the rake operation range,
 adjustment, maintenance and lubrication of the machine with engine off,
 performing repairs of the machine only by skilled persons,
 operation of the machine by persons, which are familiarized with operator’s manual,
 in the event of the machine protection against children and unauthorized personnel residual risk
when operating the rake may be limited to necessary minimum.
When the risk of exposing to noise cannot be avoided or eliminated by any group
protective means or organization of work, employer (farmer) must:
1) provide the operator with individual means of noise protection, if the noise
level in work place exceeds 80 dB.
2) provide the operator with individual means of noise protection and supervise
the correctness of its usage, if the noise level in work place reaches or exceeds
85 dB.

5. OPERATION
5.1. Attaching the rake to the tractor
CAUTION:
When attaching the rake, there should be no persons between the machine
and the tractor. Any accidental manoeuvring with the aggregate might cause
crushing of unauthorized personnel.
CAUTION:
The machine should be mounted on a level ground.
Rotary rake Z2-780 and Z2-840 works properly with tractors (class 2,0 and power
from 60 HP).
 The rake should be attached to a tractor with use of tractor's lower pull-cables as provided in
Fig. 6. For this purpose drive the tractor at the rake's catch, and then place hangers Wof
tractor's lower pull-cables on pins Son the rake's linkage.
 Once the rake is mounted turn support leg back and protect it with pin K.
 Connect hydraulic hoses:
-Z2-780 – one connector for lifting of work assemblies,
-Z2-780 H and Z2-840 – one connector for lifting of work assemblies and a pair of two-
side-operation connectors for control of raking width.
 Connect the machine's lighting cables to the tractor and check the lights for operation.
 Connect telescopic articulated shaft. If need be shorten the shaft as per item 5.3.1.

 After the rake has been attached to tractor, check the balance and steerability of tractor - rake
set. To do this, calculate to formulas given in the appendix or weigh the set, and then drive on
the scales only with front axis of the tractor. If the pressure on the front axis is at least 20% of
the whole set’s pressure, it means the set is stable. Otherwise, front axis should be balanced.
5.2. Preparing the rake to transport
CAUTION:
Switching the machine from working to transport position, and the other way
round can only be done on an even and stable ground. Prior to starting any
works make sure that nearby the machine there are no unauthorized persons
exposed to being crushed.

To prepare the rake to transport and to meet safety precautions, please do the following:
 due to safety reasons, before setting the rake to transport position turn off the PTO shaft; raking
arms cannot be in motion,
 lift safety guards to transport position,
 take off extreme rotors, put them in the transport holes, (depending on the maximum height of
the obstacles during transport),
 put the tine protections,
 lift support leg,
 lift working assemblies and secure them with a pawls.

CAUTION:
When lifting the machine for transport pay attention so that the tractor's glass
pane is closed. Protective barriers found on the rake may damage the glass.
5.2.1. Preparing the rake for transport on public roads
To meet safety precautions concerning transport on the public roads the rake should be
equipped with warning triangle, attached at the rake's rear (the plates are standard-delivered with
the machine.) To improve safety during the transport the machine should be fitted with a warning
triangle – to be purchased at the manufacturer.
When transporting on public roads respect provisions valid in the country of use.
CAUTION:
Warning devices can be ordered from the rake’s manufacturer.
CAUTION:
Do not drive on public roads if the machine's transport height is more than
4 m (when transported, transport height should be lowered by disassembling
outermost the arms).
5.3. Mounting PTO shaft
The machine is delivered with a separate instruction manual for PTO shafts.
Prior to commencing operation, examine and adjust length of PTO shaft, which is designed to
mount machine on tractor. In some cases it is possible, that the shaft is too long and therefore needs
to be shortened, so that there is adequate tolerance for the shortest possible distance between
tractor’s shaft and machine’s shaft.
Mount the shaft with wide-angle joint from the rake side. The guard should be protected
against rotating by securing the shaft set chains to immovable parts of the tractor and the rake.

CAUTION:
The telescopic articulated shaft should remain mounted only during the rake's
operation period. For transport and service time the shaft should be
disconnected from the tractor's PTO shaft.
CAUTION:
Use machines with correspondingly designed telescopic articulated drive
shafts. For any service and repair works of the shaft and the machine, the
tractor engine and its drive must be disconnected.
CAUTION:
Prior to the operation commencement, read the operator's manuals of both
the machine and the PTO shaft. Safety guards should be inspected whether
they (in the tractor, the mower and the PTO shaft) are placed correctly and
are not damaged. Damaged or missing parts must be replaced with genuine
ones. Make sure that the PTO shaft is mounted properly. Approaching the
rotating parts is strictly forbidden, as it may lead to serious injuries or even
cause death.
CAUTION:
When changing the tractor, with which the machine operates, control the
length of PTO shaft again, as otherwise the machine can be damaged.
5.3.1. Shortening PTO shaft
CAUTION:
If need be, shorten the PTO haft according to its operator’s manual given by
the shaft’s manufacturer (Fig. 8).

Shaft's length should be adjusted individually for the tractor, on which the machine is
mounted. In order to determine minimal shaft length:
 set aggregated rakes in working position,
 take measurement of distance between two shafts as provided in Fig. 9,
 next additionally distract 80mm / 3.15″from the resulting measurement (L
Z
) in order to keep
tolerance and shorten the shaft for this particular length (Fig. 10). Information on proper
shortening of shafts is provided on decal N-149 (Fig. 8) placed on the machine and also found
in shaft’s manual provided by its manufacturer.

5.4. Switching from transport to working position
 Make sure there is nobody around in the place where you are going to lower the rake,
 Unblock the locks with a cord,
 By means of hydraulic lifting lower arms of the rake in the slowliest way in order to cushion
contact with the ground,
 If raking tines were demounted, take off arms from transport holders, put them into the rotors
and secure them with cotter pins,
 Lower safety guards.

5.5. Preparing the rake for work
CAUTION:
During storing of the machine in company SaMASZ the cylinders are
protected by special grease in order to secure them against weather which
may cause their premature wear. Before starting the operation excess grease
should be removed from the cylinders.
Due to large dimensions of rakes, 4 arms are originally dismounted on each rotor for transport
purposes (TIR). In order to dismount these quicker they are mounted in factory with bolts. For
operation purposes put expansion pins which are provided with the machine instead of factory bolts
as given below:
 untighten bolts from four outer arms on the rakes in each of transmissions (Fig. 12),
