1. Congratulations!
The seca 856 organ and diaper scale you
have acquired is a highly-accurate yet si-
multaneously sturdy piece of equipment.
seca has been putting its experience at
the service of health for over 150 years
now, and as market leader in many coun-
tries of the world, is always setting new
standards with its innovative develop-
ments for weighing and measuring.
In accordance with national regulations, the
seca 856 organ and diaper scale is used
primarily in hospitals, general practice and
in-patient care facilities.
Weight is determined within a few sec-
onds.
The Pre-Tare function allows you to store
the weight of a dish. This weight is deduct-
ed automatically during the weighing oper-
ation.
In addition, the scale has a HOLD function
to store the weight determined and a
TARE function so that additional weights
(for example a dish) are ignored for weigh-
ing.
The scale is not sensitive to wet and can
be disinfected by wiping.
Its low power consumption means that with
a set of batteries, the seca 856 can be
used on a mobile basis for long periods.
2. Safety
Before using the new scale, please take a little time to read the following safety
instructions.
• Follow the safety instructions in the in-
struction manual.
• Keep the operating manual and the
declaration of conformity contained
therein in a safe place.
• Do not drop the scale or subject it to
violent shocks.
• Use only the type of battery stated (see
“Power supply” on page 13).
• Have scale serviced on a regular basis
(see “Servicing” on page 17).
• Have repairs carried out exclusively by
authorised persons.

Correct weighing

, and appear consec-
utively in the display (or for the lb:oz set-
ting: ). The scale is then
automatically set to zero and ready to
use.
– If necessary, switch the weight display
(see page 14).
– Place the item for weighing on the scale.
– Read the weighing result off the digital
display.
– If a load greater than 5,000 g or 11 lbs
is placed on the scale, appears in
the display.
– To switch off the scale, press the Start

Taring weight display (TARE)
The tare function is useful if an additional weight (for example a dish) is to be ignored in
the weighing result. Proceed as follows:
– Activate the tare function whilst the ad-
ditional weight is on the scale by keep-
ing the Hold/Tare key depressed for
some time.
– Wait until the display stops flashing and
shows .
You can now perform as many weigh-
ing operations as you like.
– Hold the key down again to deactivate
the Tare function; the scale is then back
in normal weighing mode and the tare
value has been erased.
– The tare value is likewise erased by the
scale being switched off.
Important!
The maximum weight which can be displayed is reduced by the weight of the
objects already placed on the scale.
Store weight value (HOLD)
It is possible to continue displaying the weight value determined after the load has been
removed, before the weight value has been noted:
– Press the Hold/Tare key whilst the load
is on the scale.
“HOLD” appears in the digital display.
The value remains saved in the display
until the hold function is automatically
switched off.
– The HOLD function can be switched off
by pressing the Hold/Tare key again.
appears in the display if the scale has
no load on it, otherwise the current
weight. The “HOLD“ display vanishes.
Note:
The HOLD function can also be used if the TARE function has been executed
beforehand.

16
Weighing with pre-tare function
If the pre-tare function is activated, a stored weight value is deducted from the currently
measured weight. This function can be useful if the weight of a dish is not to be included
in the display, for example.
– Press the Start key with no load on the
scale.
, and appear con-
secutively in the display. The scale is
then automatically set to zero and ready
for operation.
– While the additional weight is on the
scale, store the weight (e.g. of a dish) by
keeping the Pretare key depressed for
some time).
The tare value remains stored even after
the scale is switched off.
– Now put the item for weighing on the
scale.
The scale determines the weight.
– Briefly pressing the Pretare key sub-
tracts the additional weight from the
measuring result.
You can now perform as many weigh-
ing operations as you like.
– To return to normal weighing mode,
press the Pretare key.
– To switch off the scale, press the Start
key again.
5. Cleaning
Clean the housing as required using a domestic cleaning agent or commercially-available
disinfectant. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Under no circumstances use abrasive or acid cleaners, white spirit, benzene or the like for
cleaning. Such substances can damage the high-quality surfaces.

6. What do I do if…
… no weight display comes on?
– Is the scale switched on?
– Check the batteries.
… the display shows ?
– Battery voltage is running low. Change the batteries in the next few days.
… appears in the display?
– Batteries are empty. Put in new batteries.
… appears in the display?
– Maximum load has been exceeded.
… the display flashes?
– If you have just activated the Hold or Tare function, please wait until the scale has de-
tected a steady weight value. The display will then stop flashing.
– If there has been no activation of a function beforehand, remove the load from the scale
and wait until is displayed, then weigh again.
… the display appears?
– The ambient temperature of the scale is too high or too low. Place the scale in an
ambient temperature between +10 °C and +40 °C. Wait about 15 minutes for the
scale to adapt to the ambient temperature and then weigh again.
… the display and a number appear?
– Switch off the scale with the Start key and start the scale again. The scale will then
work normally again.
If this is not the case, disconnect the power supply by briefly removing the batteries. If
this measure is equally unsuccessful, inform the Service department.
7. Servicing
Your seca scale leaves the factory with an accuracy greater than ± 0.3 %. To ensure that
this accuracy is maintained, the product must be carefully set up and regularly maintained.
Depending on the frequency of use, we recommend servicing every 3 to 5 years. Please
ensure that a qualified service agent is used. If in doubt, contact seca Customer Service for
further information.
