• Yourhipbraceisdesignedtoprotectyourhip
 andminimisetheriskofitdislocating.
• Itdoesthisbyhelpinglimithowmuchyoucan
 move.Itcanonlyhelpanditisimportantyou
 followalloftheinstructionsgiven.Thisincludes
 onlysittinginhighseats,preventingyourlegs
 crossingandavoidingexcessivebending.
• Thismaybemadeeasierwithhighseats,
 heightenedtoiletseatsanddevicestohelpyou
 reachthingswithoutbendingandtwisting.
• Thisbracemustbewornasadvisedbythe
 hospital.Sometimesthisisallofthetime,but
 eveniftheydoletyouremoveit,becareful
 whenyouremoveitandwhatyoudowhenout
 ofit.Ifyouareallowedtotakeitowhenin
 bed,youaremostatriskwhengettinginand
 outofbedduetothebendingandtwisting
 involved,somakesureyouarelyingandina
 safepositionbeforeyouremovethebrace.
• Ifyoutrytositonalowseatitwillpushyour
 pelvisbackandmaydigin.Itissupposedtodig
 inasitistellingyoutostopbendingsomuch.If
 youtrytocrossyourlegsorleantowardsyour
 goodsidethethighpadwillpushharder.

The brace will only work at its best if
applied correctly. The brace has been
adjusted in the hospital especially for you.
1) Firstlyensurethebandageisttedlow
 downonyourpelvis.Therigidbandshould
 bewellbelowyourwaist.
2) Fastenthebandagermlyaroundyourlower
 tummyusingthehandstrapstohelpwithgrip.
3) Fastenthebucklexedtotherigidband.
 Thisshouldbewellbelowthewaistbutnot
 solowasyoucan’tbendyourhip.Pullitas
 rmlyaspossible.
4) Placetheclaspoveryourthighandfasten
 thestrapbehindit.Incaseyoufeelthethigh
 bandshouldbeadjustedanyfurther,youcan
 alsoopenthestrapontheinsideofyourthigh.

Putting the Brace On
 Donottestthebracetoseehowfaryoucan
 go.Thebraceactsasareminderandifyoufeel
 thesepressuresyouareputtingyourselfatrisk.
• ForhygieneandcomfortavestorT-shirtmay
 bewornunderthebrace.Howeverfroma
 practicalaspectyouwillneedtowear
 underwearontopofittoallowfortoileting.
 Thismayrequireverylooseorelasticunderwear,
 oronesofalargersize.Outergarmentscanbe
 wornontopofthebraceasnormal.
• Thebandagepartofthebracecanbeseparated
 fromtherigidpartandwashed,butensureyou
 areinasafepositionwhenthisisdone.We
 recommendspeakingwiththehospitalbefore
 doingthis.Washthebandagewithamild
 detergentatahand-washsettingof30°C.
 Simplyallowtoairdry,donottumbledry,donot
 placeonhotobjects(e.g.radiators)anddonot
 iron.Onlywearwhendry.Sparebandagesare
 availablethroughyourhospital,ordirectlyfrom
 BraceOrthopaedic.

5) Stretchthebandagedownyourthightominimise
 creasing,andcloseitaroundyourthigh.Makesure
 ittsassnuglyandsmoothlyaspossible.
6) Ensuretherigidpadisjustbelowyour
 hipjointandyoufeelthesupportfromit.

• Beforeusingthisdeviceanindividualadaptation
 oftheorthosisandafamiliarisationinitsuse
 byanorthotistorexperiencedorthopaedic
 technicianaccordingtothemedicalinstructions
 isessential.
• Incorrectselection,adaptation,application
 and/orfailuretomonitorthecorrecttofthis
 devicecancausehealthdamage.
• Neverweartheorthosisonbrokenskin.
• Checkorthosisfordamage(suchasloose
 connections,fasteners,belts,etc.)eachtimeit
 isputon.
• Shouldanyperformancemalfunctions(likean
 apparentreductioninorlackofcorrective
 action)besuspected,immediatelycallan
 orthotistororthopaedictechnician.
• Theorthosismustbecheckedforfunction,
 correcttandpossibledamagebyan
 orthotistorexperiencedorthopaedic
 technicianatregularintervals.
• Shouldtheproducthavebeensubjectto
 disproportionatelystrongforces,itmustbe
 checkedforpossibledamagesbyanorthotist
 orexperiencedorthopaedictechnicianbefore
 furtheruse.
• Sharpedgesorthelike,whichmayoccur
 whenmachiningtheproduct,mustbedebur-
 redinordertoavoidskininjuries.
• Intolerablepressurecausedbytheorthosis
 maycauseskininjuriesoradisturbanceinthe
 bloodsupplyandmustbeavoided.

trytomoveinappropriately.

Whilstwerecognisethisisalargebrace,it
shouldnotbeuncomfortableunlessyouare
movingincorrectly.
Wehaveworkedhardinkeepingthedesign
assimpleaspossible.
Usersshouldcheckthesecurityofthebrace,
includingthescrewconnections,onaweekly
basis.Shouldyouhaveanyproblemsorconcerns,
pleasecontactthehospital.Pleasekeepyour
hospitalappointmentswhereyouwillbeadvised
whenyoucanstopwearingyourbrace.
