1 Software
Architecture
This section describes the various software components of the Smart-Vue
monitoring system.
1.1 Overview The Smart-Vue system operates in a traditional client-server mode: the
Smart-Vue Client application installed on computers in the network
accesses and manages data stored on a common server.
The server’s role is to collect data from a network of sensors monitoring
different physical parameters, such as temperature, differential pressure,
CO2levels, and more. This data is logged and transmitted wirelessly by
Smart-Vue end-point modules to receivers connected to the server.

1.2 Applications This section describes the software components in the Smart-Vue
monitoring system.
1.2.1 Smart-Vue Client The Smart-Vue Client application was developed as a standalone
executable program. This executable can be used on all Microsoft
Windows®32-bit operating system versions, Windows XP SP2 or higher,
Vista or 7 Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise, Windows Server 2003 and
2008. Smart-Vue Client can be installed to your computer using the
Smart-Vue installation CD-ROM. The application may also be:
• Run directly from a USB key
• Sent by e-mail to another user, who may copy and run software from
desired location on his or her hard drive (note: some antivirus
programs block e-mail containing executables).
• Executed from a server computer without having a local copy on your
PC
• Copied and pasted from a server computer to the desired location on
your own hard drive
As a standalone application, this application does not require the
presence of other installed files, such as DLLs, to operate.
1.2.2 Smart-Vue Control
Center
The Smart-Vue Control Center is an application that lets you interact
with the Smart-Vue Server and Alarm Management System (AMS)
applications on Window Vista®, Windows 7®, Windows Server 2008®.
These operating system version do not allow applications running as
system services to offer a graphical user interface. The Smart-Vue
Control Center solves this problem by:
• Stopping applications running as services (when requested).
• Restarting those applications as graphical Windows applications.
This feature is intended for advanced users only, for the purpose of
troubleshooting specific issues.

Note : Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 allow service
applications to interact with the desktop. You may access the Smart-Vue
applications using their icons in the application tray in the lower
right-hand corner of the desktop ( ). You therefore do not need to use
the Smart-Vue Control Center application on Windows XP and Windows
Server 2003.
1.3 Services To check the status of service applications running on your Smart-Vue
Server computer:
1. Right-click on My Computer (on your desktop)
2. Click on Manage ==> Services and Applications ==> Services
3. For normal operation, the following Smart-Vue services must be
started and running as services:
• SVuServer
• SVuAMS
• emul_<receiver name>
By default, these services are configured to restart automatically when
your computer boots, ensuring reliable intervention-free operation.
1.3.1 MySQL
Installed with Smart-Vue Server, MySQL is an open-source database that
runs as a service on the server computer. MySQL is configured to run on
port 33006 in order to coexist transparently with other MySQL engines
(if installed), which generally use port 3306.

Note :
• MySQL does not offer any particular user interface.
• The application and its components are installed in
C:\SmartVue\mysql\
• Check with your IT service for advanced tools or help with additional
MySQL configuration.
1.3.2 SmartService One instance of the SmartService application runs for each receiver
configured in your Smart-Vue system. This service ensures the
independent and simultaneous operation of each receiver.
• The name of the SmartService instance is: emul_<receiver_name>,
where <receiver_name> is the name you assign to a specific receiver
when configuring the Smart-Vue system.
• A system with several receivers will be running several SmartService
services, named emul_<receiver1_name>, emul_<receiver2_name>,
emul_<receiver3_name>, etc., using the names you assign to the
receivers.
• The first SmartService instance communicates on port 1091, the
second on 1092, incrementing upwards.
Note : By default, the installation wizard automatically names the
Smart-service as emul_local. This name can be changed using the
Smart-Vue Server interface.
1.3.3 Smart-Vue Server Smart-Vue Server is the central software component in the Smart-Vue
system. This application requires a PC running the following Microsoft
Windows 32 bit systems: XP Pro SP2 or later, Vista or 7 Business,
Ultimate, and Enterprise, Windows Server 2003 and 2008.

Smart-Vue server acts as a middleware application that forwards data
collected from Smart-Vue end-point modules (via receivers) to the
MySQL database, and managing all configuration, user, and alarm
system settings. This application runs as a service, receiving client
workstation connections on port 1090. This port may be changed if
necessary.
This section describes the Smart-Vue Server graphical user interface.
You must login as a user with Super Admin or Admin rights. To open the
application:
1. Right-click on the Smart-Vue Server icon in the Windows
application tray ( ), and select Open, or use the Control Center
( ) in the Windows application tray.
2. Enter your login name and password to continue.
Note : All changes are tracked in the audit trail, which may be accessed
using the Smart-Vue Client application.

Here is a description of the available options in this interface:
1.3.3.1 Receiver list Act as Remote Server on port Enables you to change the port for
TCP communication with client. If
you change the value here, then you
must specify the new port number in
the login screen of Smart-Vue Client:

Listening Interval on TCP port Sets frequency at which the
SVuServer service reads
emul_<receiver_name>. Speeds
under 100 ms require a very fast
server.
Send back to client interval Sets frequency at which SVuServer
sends information back to Smart-Vue
Client. Speeds under 100 ms require
a very fast network.
Remove receiver Removes the selected receiver from the
application. The application will not
remove the receiver here unless you
first remove all associated end-point
modules using Smart-Vue Client.
Rename receiver Changes the name of the selected receiver.
This can be done even when
end-points have been previously
configured. Names may be
composed of up to 8 alpha-numeric
characters, including the underscore
character ( _ ). Do not use spaces.
SmartService applications
work as a Service Process If this checkbox is checked, the
SmartService applications operate
normally as Windows services. You
would only uncheck this box to trace

low-level error messages. Expert use
in an MS DOS-mode window only.
To carry out this temporary change,
click on Re-Start, or Stop and Start
to switch from service to application.
Register SmartService Adds the SmartService
(emul_<receiver_name>) for the
selected receiver to the Windows
registry (done by default when you
install a new receiver). There is no
confirmation when you press this
button.
Remove SmartService Removes the SmartService
(emul_<receiver_name>) for the
selected receiver from the Windows
registry (done by default when you
delete a receiver). There is no
confirmation when you press this
button.
1.3.3.2 SQL database settings To view and/or modify Smart-Vue Server database settings, click on the
SQL database settings tab.

Here is a description of the settings on this tab:
User name / password Login information used by Smart-Vue
Server to connect to My SQL. The
user name and password are set by
default during installation and may
only be changed by a qualified
database administrator.
Host The IP address of the host computer running
MySQL.
TCP port The port on which the MySQL
application is listening.
Check tables Click on this button to check
database integrity and repair
tables. Tables will be repaired
automatically in case any errors
are detected.
PLEASE MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR
DATABASE BEFORE USING
THIS FEATURE.
If you need to change any of the preceding information:
1. Click on the Change settings button. The button label then
changes to Apply.
2. Make the desired changes
3. Click on Apply.
1.3.3.3 Services – Settings Use the options on this tab to repair or update the following settings for
Smart-Vue system services:
Register SVuServer as a service If necessary, click on Register to
add SVuServer to the Windows
registry (done by default during
installation). This can be useful, for
example, if your registry is damaged

and the service is not listed. Clicking
on Unregister removes the service
from the registry.
Register SVuAMS as a service If necessary, click on Register to add
SVuAMS to the Windows registry
(done by default during installation).
This can be useful, for example, if
your registry is damaged and the
service is not listed. Clicking on
Unregister removes the service from
the registry.
Printer used for alerts This feature allows your Smart-Vue
Client application(s) to access
printers that are available on the
server. That is, the server may have
configured printers that are not the
same as those on the Smart-Vue
Client computer, and you may wish
to use those printers to print alerts
from Smart-Vue Client (under Alert
Settings, F8). If you add
subsequently a new printer to the
server, you must register it using this
function for it to be available in
Smart-Vue Client applications.

To “publish” a server printer for
clients:
1. Click on the pull-down menu.
2. Select the desired printer.
3. Click on Register. This
information is stored in the
SmartVue Server.ini file in the
[Printers] section.

4. Repeat this procedure for each
printer you wish to add.
Note : Printers added in this manner
are published for the entire base of
Smart-Vue Client applications in
your network. New printers added to
the server computer will be taken
into account by Smart-Vue Server
the next time it is restarted.

Restart computer Restarts the computer.
Minimize Shrinks the application interface to the
Windows taskbar.
Close Closes the graphical user interface, but
does not shutdown the Smart-Vue
Server service.
Note : If you shutdown the Smart-Vue Server, Smart-Vue Client
applications will no longer be able to connect to transmit data, alarms,
etc.

End-user License Agreement Displays the end-user license
agreement text.
About Displays software version and

The main menu bar also has the following icons:
Clears the on-screen log displayed in
the bottom half of the window.
Saves the on-screen log as a text file
that you may send to technical
support if necessary.
Closes the graphical user interface,
but does not shutdown the
Smart-Vue Server service.
1.3.4 Enabling/disabling 21
CFR Part 11
The Smart-Vue monitoring system includes an option to comply with 21
CFR Part 11 requirements. This feature is controlled from the Smart-Vue
Server user interface, on the Services-Settings tab.

Enable 21CFR Part 11 Use this checkbox to enable 21CFR
Part 11 compliance for the system. If
the checkbox is not checked, 21CFR
Part 11 compliance is not enabled.
Lock Interval (min) This field specifies the period of time
after which, if no activity occurs on
the computer, Smart-Vue Client will
lock and require you to re-enter your
password.
If this option is changed on the Smart-Vue server (enabled or disabled),
you must close all Smart-Vue Client applications and restart them for the
change to take effect. Enabling this option slightly modifies Smart-Vue
Client operation. Examples include requiring justification for making
changes to sensor status, making changes to sensor settings, the inability
to make changes to the software protection feature, and more.
A colored icon in the Settings menu bar in Smart-Vue Client indicates
whether this option is currently enabled or disabled on the server.
