INTRODUCTION
About the TheraKair Visio Mattress Replacement System
The TheraKair Visio™Mattress Replacement System uniquely combines low air loss with a nylon fabric with
moisture vapor permeable backing and pulsation therapy to help provide the ideal environment for the skin
of the patient.
The TheraKair Visio MRS can reduce pressure, shear and friction through low air loss and through the use
of nylon fabric with moisture vapor permeable backing, enables skin moisture and temperature to be
managed. Pulsation therapy mimics the body's natural movements, encouraging lymph and blood flow for
increased oxygenation to the skin which may help reduce the risk of skin damage.
The system features an intuitive touch screen for easy operation and has been designed to be silent for
patient comfort.
System Features
The TheraKair Visio MRS offers the following features and advantages over conventional air filled overlays or
hospital bed mattresses:
Low Air Loss
• May help reduce pressure in comparison to leading alternating pressure mattresses
• Conforms to bony prominences, minimizing deformation of body tissue
• Allows the patient to sink into the mattress, evenly distributing pressure
• Helps reduce pressure-induced pain
Pulsation Therapy
• May help aid in the management of edema and patient comfort
• Helps improve capillary blood flow
• Aids in encouraging lymph flow which may reduce edema
Scheduled Pulsation
The system provides the convenience and safety of preset automatic pulsation. A complete pulsation cycle
can be adjusted to 8, 16 or 32 minutes.

10
Pressure Relief Therapy
The system provides pressure relief therapy, which significantly reduces interface pressures when compared
to a standard hospital bed mattress.
Reduced Heel Area Pressure
The cushions at the foot of the bed operate at a lower pressure level, which reduces heel area interface
pressures. The cushion corresponding to the heel of the patient may also be removed to further reduce heel
area pressure.
InstaFlate™Function
The system is programmed with an InstaFlate function. When this function is activated through the control
screen interface, the mattress will rapidly inflate to maximum firmness. This allows easy patient transfer and
repositioning.
Touch Screen Interface
The TheraKair Visio MRS is controlled via a touch screen interface that gives details of system status and
allows for easy and precise adjustment.
Individualized Patient Support
The TheraKair Visio MRS is made up of fifteen air cushions that run over the width of the mattress. The
pressures within the cushions are automatically controlled at the therapy unit and can be adjusted to
accommodate the weight and body shape of each patient, facilitating pulsation therapy and pressure relief
therapy.
Quick Release Air Supply Connector
The air connection between the mattress and the therapy unit can be quickly and easily disconnected in the
event that CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is required for the patient. When disconnected, the mattress
will rapidly deflate and the therapy unit will go into standby mode.
It will take approximately 10 seconds for the mattress to deflate sufficiently for CPR to commence.
Warmer
A warmer is incorporated into the therapy unit to allow adjustment of air temperatures entering the
mattress and to help increase patient comfort.
Reusability
The TheraKair Visio MRS is reusable after proper care and cleaning. Minor leaks and holes caused by needle
and pin pricks will not prevent reuse or cause deflation.

11
Indications
TheraKair Visio MRS is indicated for:
• Edema management
• Prevention or treatment of up to stage IV pressure ulcers
• Patients requiring a surface to assist pain management
Contraindications
Patient conditions for which the application of pressure relief therapy on TheraKair Visio MRS is
contraindicated include:
• Spinal cord injury
• Cervical traction
Intended Care Setting
Intended care settings of the TheraKair Visio MRS are:
• Acute Care
• Post Acute Care
Connecting the System to Other Devices
Devices That May Be Attached to This System
None.
Devices to Which This System May Be Attached
The TheraKair Visio MRS can be fitted to most standard hospital beds.
The TheraKair Visio Therapy Unit can be fitted to the footboard of most hospital beds.
Risks and Precautions
Mattress Replacement
The TheraKair Visio MRS is a mattress replacement system and should never be fitted before first removing
the existing mattress from the bed. Fitting the TheraKair Visio mattress on top of an existing mattress will
raise the patient above the side rails of the bed, placing them at risk of falling out of the bed or becoming
trapped between the mattress and the side rails.
Transfer
Standard precautions should be taken during patient transfer.
Side Rails and Restraints
WARNING: Use or non-use of restraints, including side rails, can be critical to patient safety. Serious or fatal
injury can result from the use (potential entrapment) or non-use (potential patient falls) of side rails or other
restraints. See related Safety Information.

12
Patient Migration
Specialty surfaces have different shear and support characteristics than conventional surfaces and may
increase the risk of patient movement, sinking and / or migration into hazardous positions of entrapment
and / or inadvertent bed exit. Monitor patients frequently to guard against patient entrapment.
Use With Other Devices
All TheraKair Visio MRS components are designed to be used as single system. The TheraKair Visio Therapy
Unit should only be used with the TheraKair Visio MRS. Any attempt to connect and use the therapy unit
with any other brand or model of mattress or overlay may result improper operation of equipment, possibly
leading to increased risk of patient injury.
Protection Against Hazards
Fluids
Avoid spilling fluids on any part of the therapy unit.
If spills do occur:
• Disconnect the unit from the main electricity supply
• Clean fluids from the case
Ensure that there is no moisture in or near the power inlet, power switch and power plug
before reconnecting the power supply.
• Check the operation of controls and other components in the area of the spill
• Perform applicable checkout procedures
Fluids remaining on the electronic controls can cause corrosion that may cause the electronic
components to fail. Component failures may cause the unit to operate erratically, possibly
producing potential hazards to patient and staff.
Prolonged contact with therapy unit may result in hazard to patient or caregiver.
Power Cable
The system should never be operated with a worn or damaged power cable. Should the power cable
be found to be worn or damaged, contact your local ArjoHuntleigh subsidiary or agent for a replacement.
Safety Information
Patient Size and Weight
Maximum recommended patient weight is 135 kg
Minimum recommended patient weight is 23 kg
Maximum recommended patient height is 200 cm
Minimum recommended patient height is 137 cm
Air Intake
The air intakes for the TheraKair Visio Therapy Unit are at the rear and on the underside. To avoid the risk of
blocking these intakes, it is recommended that the unit should only be mounted on the footboard of a bed
frame. Should the bed not have a suitable footboard, it is recommended that the unit is placed on a solid
stationary surface.

13
Side Rails / Patient Restraints
Whether and how to use side rails or restraints is a decision that should be based on each patient's needs
and should be made by the patient and the patient's family, physician and caregivers, with facility protocols
in mind. Caregivers should assess risks and benefits of side rail / restraint use (including entrapment and
patient falls from bed) in conjunction with individual patient needs, and should discuss use or non-use
with patient and / or family. Consider not only the clinical and other needs of the patient but also the risks
of fatal or serious injury from falling out of bed and from patient entrapment in or around the side rails,
restraints or other accessories. In the US, for a description of entrapment hazards, vulnerable patient profile
and guidance to further reduce entrapment risks, refer to FDA's Hospital Bed System Dimensional and
Assessment Guidance To Reduce Entrapment. Outside the US, consult the local Competent Authority or
Government Agency for Medical Device Safety for specific local guidance. Consult a caregiver and carefully
consider the use of bolsters, positioning aids or floor pads, especially with confused, restless or agitated
patients. It is recommended that side rails (if used) be locked in the full upright position when the patient
is unattended. Make sure a capable patient knows how to get out of bed safely (and, if necessary, how to
release the side rails) in case of fire or other emergency. Monitor patients frequently to guard against patient
entrapment.
When selecting a standard mattress, ensure the distance between top of side rails (if used)
and top of mattress (without compression) is at least 8.66 in (220 mm) to help prevent
inadvertent bed exit or falls. Consider individual patient size, position (relative to the top of
the side rail) and patient condition in assessing fall risk.
Bed Frame
Always use a standard healthcare bed frame with safeguards or protocols that may be appropriate. It is
recommended that bed and side rails (if used) comply relative to the mattress to help minimize any gaps
that might entrap a patient’s head or body. Inappropriate, incorrect, poorly fitted or poorly maintained bed
rails and mattress replacements can potentially produce gaps that might entrap a patient’s head or body.
Bed Height
To minimize the risks of falls or injury the patient surface should always be in the lowest practical position
when the patient is unattended. Make sure area under and around bed frame is clear of objects, persons
and parts of body before adjusting height.
Brakes
Caster brakes should always be locked once the bed is in position. Verify wheels are locked before any
patient transfer to or from the bed.
Head of Bed Elevation
Keep head of bed as low as possible to help prevent patient migration.
Patient Entrance / Exit
Caregiver should always aid patient in exiting the bed. Make sure a capable patient knows how to get out of
bed safely (and, if necessary, how to release the side rails) in case of fire or other emergency.
Skin Care
Monitor skin conditions regularly and consider adjunct or alternative therapies for high acuity patients.
Give extra attention to any possible pressure points and locations where moisture or incontinence may
occur or collect. Early intervention may be essential to preventing skin breakdown.

14
No Smoking in Bed
Smoking in bed can be dangerous. To avoid the risk of fire, smoking in bed should never be allowed.
Therapy Unit
• Only use a grounded power receptacle and the power cable supplied with the TheraKair Visio
Therapy Unit. The power cable should be positioned to avoid a tripping hazard and / or damage
to the cable. ArjoHuntleigh recommends placing the cable under the bed frame and attaching it
to a mains wall socket by the head of the bed. The system should never be operated with a worn
or damaged power cable. Should the power cable be found to be worn or damaged, contact
ArjoHuntleigh or an ArjoHuntleigh authorized representative for a replacement.
• Only use replacement fuses that have the same specified rating. Using fuses with higher ratings
could result in damage or injury.
• The therapy unit is a precision electronic product. Use care when handling or transporting.
Dropping or other sudden impacts may result in damage to the therapy unit.
• Do not open the therapy unit – risk of electrical shock. Do not attempt to repair or service the
therapy unit. Repairs and service should be conducted only by ArjoHuntleigh or an ArjoHuntleigh
authorized representative. If the therapy unit is not functioning properly or has been damaged,
unplug the unit and take it out of service immediately. Contact ArjoHuntleigh or an ArjoHuntleigh
authorized representative for repair and service information.
• Do not place any objects or items, such as blankets, on or over the therapy unit.
• The air intakes for the TheraKair Visio Therapy Unit are on the back of the unit. To avoid the risk of
blocking these intakes, it is recommended that the unit be mounted on the footboard of a bed
frame. Should the bed not have a suitable footboard, it is recommended that the unit be placed on
a solid stable surface.
Interference
Although the TheraKair Visio Therapy Unit conforms to the intent of IEC 60601-1-2 in relation to
electromagnetic compatibility, all electrical equipment may produce interference. If interference is
suspected, move equipment from sensitive devices or contact the manufacturer. (IEC 60601-1-2. Medical
Electrical Equipment – Part 1: General Requirements for Safety, Amendment No. 2. Collateral Standard:
Electromagnetic Compatibility Requirements and Tests). See the Electromagnetic Emissions Information
section for detailed testing data.
General Protocols
Follow all applicable safety rules and institution protocols concerning patient and caregiver safety.
