uYou must read and understand the contents of this manual
before installing or operating your water filter. Personal injury or
property damage could result if you fail to follow instructions in
this manual.
uThis filter and its installation must comply with state and local
regulations. Check with your local public works department for
plumbing and sanitation codes. Local codes should be followed In
the event the codes conflict with any content in this manual.
uFor installations in Massachusetts, Massachusetts Plumbing
Code 248 CMR shall be adhered to. Consult your licensed plumber
for installation of this system.
uThis filter must be operated on pressures between 30 psi
to 125 psi. If the water pressure is higher than 125 PSI, use a
pressure reducing valve in the water supply line to the unit.
uThis unit must be operated at temperatures between 40°F and
110°F (4°C - 43°C).
uDo not use this filter on hot water supplies.
uDo not install this unit where it may be exposed to wet
weather, direct sunlight, or temperatures outside of the
range specified above.
uApply provided NSF certified lubricant to all o-rings during
installation. Do not use pinched or damaged o-rings during
installation.
uExposure to high levels of iron, manganese, sulfur, and
sediments may cause damage to pistons, seals, and or spacers
within the control valve and are not covered in this warranty due
to the harsh environment.
uIt is recommended to annually inspect and service the control
valve. Frequent cleaning and or replacement of piston, seals,
and or spacers may be necessary depending on how harsh the
conditions are.
uDo not use water that is microbiologically unsafe without
adequate disinfection before or after this system.
uThis publication is based on information available when
approved for printing. Continuing design refinement could
cause changes that may not be included in this publication.

These systems are complete, self-contained, loaded with
media and ready to use. A simple inlet and outlet connection
is all that is required for installation. Please review
operating pressures, temperatures and water chemistry
limitations to ensure compatibility.

UNPACK & INSPECT NRV FILTER
INSTALLATION
• Check the entire unit for any shipping damage or lost parts.
• Note any damage to the shipping cartons.
• Contact the transportation company for all damage and loss claims.
• The manufacturer is not responsible for damages in transit.
• Small parts needed to install the unit are in a parts box.
• To avoid loss of the small parts keep them in the parts bag until you are ready to install.
• Handle the unit with care.
• Do not drop the unit or set on sharp uneven projections on the floor.
• Do not turn the unit upside down.

An approved grounding

originally used and is later
interrupted by poly pipe,
the Noryl bypass valve or
by physical separation. The
grounding clamp used for
continuity, must be no less
than #6 copper conductor
to maintain proper metallic
pipe bonding.
PRE-INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
CHECK YOUR WATER HARDNESS
Use test strips (Part # 2793828-20) to get an estimation of water hardness. Contact your local BRITA®PRO dealer to use a
BRITA®PRO laboratory for a complete water analysis free of cost and no obligation to you.
CAUTION
The ground from the electrical panel or breaker box to the water meter or underground
copper pipe is tied to the copper water lines. If these lines are cut during installation
of the Noryl bypass valve and/or poly pipe, an approved grounding strap must be used
between the two lines that have been cut. This will maintain continuity. The length of the
grounding strap will depend upon the number of units being installed and/or the amount
of copper pipe being replaced with plastic pipe. See drawing below.

DETERMINE THE CORRECT
LOCATION OF THE WATER
CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT
Determine the best location for your water filter, bearing in mind the
location of your water supply lines, drain line and 120 volt AC electrical
outlet. Subjecting the filter to freezing or temperatures above 43°C
(110°F) will void the warranty. Review the various conditions below to
determine a proper location:
1. Locate as close as possible to the water supply source.
2. Locate as close as possible to a floor or laundry tub drain.
3. Locate in correct relationship to other water conditioning equipment
(see Fig. 1 on Page 7)
4. Filter should be located in the supply line before the water heater.
Temperatures above 120°F damage filters.
5. Do not install a filter in a location where freezing temperatures
occur. Freezing may cause permanent damage to this type of
equipment and will void the factory warranty.
6. Allow sufficient space around the unit for easy servicing.
7. Determine if additional plumbing is required if your water source is a
community water supply, a public water supply or you wish to bypass
water used for a geothermal heat pump, lawn sprinkling,
out-buildings or other high demand applications, refer to Fig. 1.
8. Keep the filter out of direct sunlight. Heat build up from direct
sunlight may soften and distort plastic parts.

plumbing are required.
uPlastic inlet and outlet fittings are included with the filter.
3/4” or 1” pipes to and from the filter fittings are
recommended to maintain full valve flow. You should maintain
the same or larger water supply pipe sizes as the filter inlet
and outlet pipe sizes.
uUse copper, brass, or PEX pipe and fittings.
uSome codes may also allow PVC plastic pipe.
Refer to local codes.
uALWAYS INSTALL THE INCLUDED BYPASS VALVE, OR 3
SHUT-OFF VALVES. Bypass valves let you turn off water to the
filter for repairs, but still have water in the house pipes.
u5/8” OD drain line is needed for the valve drain. A 10’ length of
hose is not included with some brands
If the plumbing system is used as the ground leg of
the electric supply, continuity should be maintained
by installing ground straps around any nonconductive
plastic piping used in installation.

INSTALL BYPASS TO THE FILTER
1. If your hot water tank is electric, turn off the power to it to avoid
damage to the element in the tank.
2. If you have a private well, turn the power off to the pump and then
shut off the main water shut off valve. If you have municipal water,
simply shut off the main valve. Go to the faucet, (preferably on the
lowest floor of the house) turn on the cold water until all pressure is
relieved and the flow of water stops.
3. Connect the inlet and outlet of the filter using appropriate fittings.
Perform all plumbing according to local plumbing codes. Any solder
joints near the valve must be done before connecting any piping to the
valve. Always leave at least 6” (152 mm) between the valve and joints
when soldering pipes that are connected to the valve. Failure to do
this could cause damage to
the valve.
4. Using the Allen Key (included), place the unit in the bypass position.
Slowly turn on the main water supply. At the nearest cold treated
water tap nearby remove the faucet screen, open the faucet and
let water run a few minutes or until the system is free of any air or
foreign material resulting from the plumbing work.
5. Make sure there are no leaks in the plumbing system before
proceeding.
6. Proceed to start up instructions.
The unit is not ready for service until you complete the start-up
instructions. Carbon filters only:
Once the unit has filled sufficiently that water is at least equal to the
height of the media shut down the water for 15-20 minutes for the carbon
to soak. After the carbon has soaked for the recommended time continue
with installation instructions.
Additional information for Non backwashing carbon filter.
After soaking, remove the aerator screen from the nearest faucet, run
water at this faucet until all fines (black) is gone from the water.

ON COPPER PLUMBING SYSTEMS BE
SURE TO INSTALL A GROUNDING WIRE
BETWEEN THE INLET AND OUTLET PIPING

The Inlet and Outlet should be as per
above illustration. This will ensure that
water will flow through the filter under
upflow configuration.

CARE OF YOUR SYSTEM
To retain the attractive appearance of your new water filter, clean occasionally with mild soap solution. Do not use abrasive cleaners,
ammonia or solvents. Never subject your filter to freezing or to temperatures above 100°F.
REPLACING THE MEDIA BED
CARBON NRV FILTER  under normal operating conditions the effective life of the filter media is approximately one to three years,
depending on the water quality, after which, taste and odor problems may return. When this happens, contact your dealer for a
replacement media bed.
Check to ensure all media parts are received.
The first step in replacing the media bed is to shut off the water supply to the filter. At this point, you must disconnect the plumbing from
the inlet and outlet. Then unscrew the head from the fibreglass tank. Once this has been done, remove the distributor tube. Then you
can remove the filter media and two types of gravel from the tank. The quickest way to do this is by simply tipping the tank upside down
into a large drum or pail.
LOADING THE MEDIA PAK
Place the distributor tube back down the center of the tank. NOTE: the top of this tube should be plugged with a rag or cork to prevent
media from entering. Pour the bag of coarse gravel into the tank, and then pour the bag of fine gravel into the tank.
It is important that the distributor tube is not moved or pulled out as it is not possible to put it down to the bottom of the tank once
gravel or media are in the tank.

The large funnel (sold separately makes
