2.1. Safety and responsibility
- The motor, torque and operating time must be adjusted according to the complete installation.
- Only Somfy original accessories should be used (adapters, brackets, connectors, power cable, etc.).

1. INTRODUCTION
The J4 RTS motor is designed to drive all types of external venetian blind.

2. SAFETY
The moving parts of the motors must be protected if operating at less than 2.50 m from the ground or another
surface.
- The installation must not be used if it shows any signs of damage (for example wear, damaged cables and
springs or ill adjusted end limits).
- The installation must be protected from all unauthorised use. Take preventive measures to avoid any
spurious operation.
- Children must be supervised to ensure they do not play with the equipment. Keep remote controls out of
the reach of children.
- This equipment is not intended for use by persons (including children) with impaired physical or mental
capacities or those without the required knowledge or experience unless supervised by a person responsible
for their safety.
- Disconnect all the connection cables from the power supply before operating on the installation.
- Do not use the installation if operations (window cleaning for example) are being carried out nearby.
- Observe the assembly and use guidelines, in particular the safety instructions from the manufacturer of the
device to be used , since incorrect installation can lead to severe injury.
- Permanently mounted controls must be mounted visibly.
- The power supply cables of the motor must only be replaced by a cable of the same type, delivered by the
manufacturer of the motor.
- If the mushroom is used to stop the blind in the upper end limit position, the installer must check that the

Check that during operation, none of the slats from the blind exert any radial pressure on the
mushroom.
If the EVB is equipped with a z-shaped slat, it will be necessary to adjust the upper end limit for
the motor. In this case, the mushroom is used to ensure the safety of the EVB.

3. INSTALLATION
 Screw the 2 adaptors (1) using 2 M3x8 bolts (2) on
the motor shaft.
Tightening torque = 1,35 N.m +/- 20%
 Connect the connection cable (3) to the motor.
Ensure that the cable does not pass over a rotating part
of the motor or mechanism.
 Compress the edge of the head rail (4) into the motor
zone.
 Insert the motor into the head rail (4).
 Using the clips (5), attach the motor in the head rail
(4) above the small acoustic tapes (6a).
 The shaft can be fitted into the adapter using a
headless screw (7).
Tightening torque = 2 N.m maximum
Installation with external clips
 Screw the 2 adaptors (1) using 2 M3x8 bolts (2) on
the motor shaft.
Tightening torque = 1,35 N.m +/- 20%
 Connect the connection cable (3) to the motor.
Ensure that the cable does not pass over
a rotating part of the motor or mechanism.

Installation with external clips

 The shaft can be fitted into the adapter using a

Tightening torque = 2 N.m maximum
The internal clips cannot be used with J418 motors
(J4 motors with a torque of 18 Nm).

Installation with J406/J410 motors (torque of 6 or
10 Nm)
 Screw the 2 adaptors (1) using 2 M3 x 8 bolts (2) on
the motor shaft.
Tightening torque = 1,35 N.m +/- 20%
 Connect the connection cable (3) to the motor.
Ensure that the cable does not pass over
a rotating part of the motor or mechanism.
 Fit the two head rail adaptors (8) on the motor.
 Insert the motor into the head rail (4).
 Using the clip (5), attach the motor in the head rail (4).
 The shaft can be fitted into the adapter using a
headless screw (7).
Tightening torque = 2 N.m maximum
For motors with torque greater than 10 Nm
 The additional clamp must be attached with a new
bolt -> tightening torque1P

4. WIRING
 Cut off the mains power supply.
 Connect the motor according to the
information in the table below:
The phases and neutrals must be
connected together respectively.
In case of drive by a controller or any
automatisms, please refer to the dedi-
cated instructions manual.

 It is prohibited to create a complete loop on the supply cable of the J4 RTS
plate.
 Do not interlace the supply cable of the J4 RTS plate with another cable.
To ensure that the radio signal is transmitted correctly, it is necessary to pull the J4 RTS plate supply
cable out of the head rail by at least 30 cm.

5.2. Pre-programming the Somfy local control point
The guide only describes commissioning using a Telis MOD/VAR type Somfy local control point. For
commissioning using any other Somfy local control point, refer to the corresponding guide.

5.3. Checking the motor’s direction of rotation
 Press the Up and «my» buttons to switch between operating modes.

5.4. Choice of kinematics (Normal or with working position)
Normal kinematics: When the blind is lowered, the slats are closed.

The J4 RTS actuator is factory set to operate with a blind with normal kinematics. However, the user can
choose between blind operation modes, either with normal kinematics or kinematics with working position.
Check that your J4 RTS actuator has been assembled in the blind in the lowered position with
the slats closed.
5.5. Setting the end limits
5.5.1. End limit (automatic adjustment)

 The upper end limit is set by pressing the «mushroom».
 Go to the section entitled «Operation».
When using a blind with kinematics with w position (raising, lowering and slat direction movements
via a mechanism hidden inside the runners), it is essential to check that the apron’s top runner acti-
vates the mushroom to prevent damage to the blind.
Otherwise, set the upper end limit position below the mushroom or use mushroom extensions.

5.5.2. Upper end limit (manual adjustment)
 Press the Up and Down buttons for 5 seconds the E.V.B.
PRYHVEULHÀ\
 Press the Up button.
The E.V.B. rotates in the up direction. Continue to press
the Up button until the desired upper end limit is reached
(the E.V.B. continues to be raised after the control point
button has been pressed for 2 seconds).
 Stop the E.V.B. in the desired position (the thumbwheel on
the Telis MOD/VAR type local control point can be used
to set the desired position) using the stop function on the
«mushroom».
 If the «mushroom» is not activated during setting, press
the Down button (the E.V.B. PRYHV EULHÀ\ WR FRQ¿UP
programming). If the «mushroom» is activated when the
upper end limit is set, the position is programmed just
below the «mushroom».
5.5.3. Lower end limit (manual adjustment)
 Press the Up and Down buttons for 5 seconds the blind

The E.V.B. rotates in the down direction. Continue to press
the Down button until the desired lower end limit is reached
(the E.V.B. continues to be lowered after the control point
button has been pressed for 2 seconds).
 Stop the E.V.B. in the desired position (the thumbwheel on
the Telis MOD/VAR local control point can be used to set
the desired position precisely).
 Press the Up button (the E.V.B.PRYHVEULHÀ\WRFRQ¿UP
programming).

5.7. Checking the settings
Check the settings of the upper and lower end limits using the Somfy local control point.
6. OPERATING
6.1. Standard operation
6.1.1. Favourite position (my)
Besides the upper and lower positions, an intermediate position known as the «favourite
position (my)» may be programmed in the motor. The “my” favourite position is pre-set in the
factory, and corresponds to the “slats lowered, sun protection” position.
To modify or delete the favourite position (my), see the section entitled «Modifying settings».

7.1.3. Programming the “my” position
In the “my” position, press and hold the “my” button for 5
seconds: the E.V.B. PRYHV EULHÀ\ DQG WKH P\ SRVLWLRQ

7.1.4. Deleting the favourite (my) position
 Press the Down button (the E.V.B. moves to the lowered
position with the slats closed).
 Press and hold the "my" and Up buttons for 2 seconds: the
slats will tilt to the programmed “My” position.
 Press and hold the "my" and Up buttons for 5 seconds: the
E.V.B.PRYHVEULHÀ\WKHP\SRVLWLRQLVGHOHWHGWKHP\
button now works only as a "STOP" button. If using a sun
sensor, the E.V.B. moves to the lowered position when the
sun appears).
7. ADDITIONAL SETTINGS
7.1. Favourite position (my)
7.1.1. Modifying/Activating the favourite (my) position
 Press the Down button (the E.V.B. moves to the lowered
position with the slats closed).
 Press and hold the "my" and Up buttons for 2 seconds (the
slats tilt to the pre-programmed "my" position).
 Position the slats as required, using the thumbwheel of the
RTS remote control to increase or decrease the slat angle.
Go to the section entitled "Testing the my position" or
"Programming the my position".
7.1.2. Testing the “my” position (optional step)
 %ULHÀ\SUHVVWKHP\EXWWRQ
On a type 1 E.V.B., the slats tilt to the closed position then
move to the newly set "my" position.
On a type 3 E.V.B., the slats move back to the horizontal
position then move to the newly set "my" position.

 Find an RTS control point programmed in the motor.
 Press the PROG button on the RTS control point (A) until

mode.
 Press and hold the PROG button on the RTS sensor (C)
for 7 seconds. The E.V.B.PRYHVEULHÀ\WZLFH
The RTS sensors are deleted from the motor.

 Position the slats as desired using the thumbwheel (Mod/
Var RTS remote control) or by pressing the Up and Down
buttons on a paired or temporarily assigned Mod/Var RTS
remote control to increase or reduce the slat angle.
7.3.2. Programming the “sun disappearing” position
In the "sun disappearing" position, press and hold the "my"
button on a paired RTS remote control for 5 seconds: the
E.V.B.PRYHVEULHÀ\WKHVXQGLVDSSHDULQJSRVLWLRQKDV
been programmed.
7.3.3. Deleting the "sun disappearing" position
 Press the "my" button: the blind starts to move then stops
in the favourite (my) position.
 Press and hold the "my" and Up buttons for 2 seconds: the
E.V.B. is raised to the "sun disappearing" position.
 Press and hold the "my" and Up buttons for 5 seconds:
the E.V.B.PRYHVEULHÀ\WKHVXQGLVDSSHDULQJSRVLWLRQ
is activated or deleted.
7.3.4. Activating and Deactivating the "privacy position"
the "privacy position" locks the E.V.B. in position if the sun
disappears.
 Press the "my" button: the E.V.B. starts to move then stops
in the favourite (my) position.
 Press and hold the "my" and Down buttons for 5 seconds:

7.3. Sun disappearing position (SDP)
7.3.1. Modifying/Activating the "sun disappearing" position
Note: The "sun disappearing" position is the position the slats adopt when the sun is
disappearing. This function requires the use of a sun sensor. The "sun disappearing" position
is preset in the factory but not activated, and corresponds to the "slats horizontal" position. It
is not possible to modify the “sun disappearing” position if the “my” position has been deleted.

7.7. Modifying the end limits
7.7.1. Modifying the upper end limit
 Place the E.V.B. in the intermediate position.
 Press the Up and Down buttons for 5 seconds the
E.V.B.PRYHVEULHÀ\
 Press the Up button.
The E.V.B. rotates in the up direction. Continue to press
the Up button until the desired upper end limit is reached
(the E.V.B. continues to be raised after the control point
button has been pressed for 2 seconds).
 Stop the E.V.B. in the desired position (the thumbwheel on
the Telis MOD/VAR type local control point can be used
to set the desired position) using the stop function on the
"mushroom".
 If the "mushroom" is not activated during setting, press
the Down button (the E.V.B. PRYHV EULHÀ\ WR FRQ¿UP
programming).
If the "mushroom" is activated when the upper end limit is
set, the position is programmed a few millimetres below
the "mushroom".
7.7.2. Modifying the lower end limit
 Place the E.V.B. in the intermediate position.
 Press the Up and Down buttons for 5 seconds the
E.V.B.PRYHVEULHÀ\
 Press the Down button.
The E.V.B. rotates in the down direction. Continue to press
the Down button until the desired lower end limit is reached
(the E.V.B. continues to be lowered after the control point
button has been pressed for 3 seconds).
 Stop the E.V.B. in the desired position (the thumbwheel on
the Telis MOD/VAR local control point can be used to set
the desired position precisely). With a type 3 EVB, stop the
EVB before the desired position, and adjust the limit with
the thumbwheel of the local control point.
 Press the Up button (the blind PRYHV EULHÀ\ WR FRQ¿UP
programming).

8. TIPS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
8.1. Questions on the J4 RTS?
Observations Possible causes Solutions
The E.V.B. does
not operate. The wiring is incorrect. Check the wiring and modify it if
necessary.
The motor is in heat protection mode. Wait until the motor cools down.
An incorrect cable has been used. Check the cable and ensure it has 3
strands.
The Somfy control battery is weak. Check whether the battery is weak and
replace it if necessary.
The control point is not compatible. Check for compatibility and replace the
control point if necessary.
The Somfy control point used has not
been programmed into the motor.
Use a programmed control point or
program this control point.
The E.V.B. stops
too early.
The end limits have been incorrectly
set. Readjust the end limits.
I can't tilt the slats

8.2. Replacing a lost or broken Somfy control point
This reset deletes all control points, however,
it does not delete the sensors and the favourite
position.
Only switch off the power for the motor to be reset.
Do not place the blind, in the Upper end limit !
 Cut the power supply for 2 seconds.
 Next:
Switch the power supply back on for 5 to 15
seconds.
Cut the power supply for 2 seconds.
Switch the power supply back on: the E.V.B.
starts to move for a few seconds.
