2 Function
2.1 General
In an automation system CPX-E, the module offers the option of connecting an encoder for detecting
pulses. The encoder supply has an electronic fuse for protection against short circuit or overload. After
the elimination of a short circuit or overload, the encoder supply is switched on again automatically.
The module provides the following functions:
– Setting the counter è 2.2 "Set counter" function
– Blocking the counter è 2.3 “Block counter” function
– Latching è 2.4 “Latching” function
– Speed measurement è 2.5 “Speed measurement” function
The module also provides 4digital inputs (I0...I3), each of which can be used to trigger a particular
function:
– Input I0: trigger latching
– Input I1: block latching
– Input I2: set counter
– Input I3: block counter
The debounce time of inputs I0...I3 and the module response can be set using module parameters
è Tab. 26 Debounce time for digital inputs.
The following encoder types can be used with the module:
– Encoder 24VDC (singleended)
– Encoder 5VDC (differential or singleended)

2.1.4 Counting
Each pulse detected at the encoder input changes the counter value unless the counter is blocked by
means of the “Block counter” function.

If the counter is blocked, the counter value remains the same and additional counting pulses are not
taken into account. When the counter is enabled once more, the counter starts from the current
counter value.
The module provides a value range of between 0…4,294,967,295 (232–1). The count range is
defined by specifying count limits. When a count limit is reached, and a further pulse is recorded, the
counter will jump to the opposite count limit without pulse loss and will continue counting from there.
This overrunning of the count limits is signalled using the “Upper CL” or “Lower CL” status bits until
the overrun is acknowledged using the “Overrun CL” control bit or the “Set counter”
(è 2.2 "Set counter" function) function is triggered.
In the case of rapid counting events, there may be further overruns before the overrun is acknow-
ledged; these cannot be identified as repeated overruns.

2.1.5 Initialisation
In order to achieve a defined start value of the counter, the counter must be set to the load value
using the “Set counter” (è 2.2 "Set counter" function) function. The load value is a value that can be
parameterised within the count limits and which is used as the start value for counting
è Tab. 25 Load value.
The counter should be blocked during initialisation è 2.3 “Block counter” function.

2.2 "Set counter" function
Using the “Set counter” function, the value saved in the “Load value” parameter is adopted as the
counter value.
The value saved in the “Load value” parameter is also adopted as the counter value when the counter
is blocked.
The following sources can be referred to when using the “Set counter” function:
– Input I2
– Zero pulse

– Process data
If one of these sources is set whilst active, the counter value is immediately set to the load value and
the “Upper CL” and “Lower CL” status bits are reset, if they have been set.
2.2.1 Setting the counter using input I2
In this function, the counter value is set to the load value saved in the “Load value” parameter
(è Tab. 25 Load value) using the input I2. The load value is adopted as counter value using a rising
edge of input I2. This function must be enabled by setting the “Enable setting DI2”
(è Tab. 29 Process data outputs (PDO)) control bit. If this function is enabled, the counter value is set
to the load value again for every rising edge at input I2.

2.2.2 Setting the counter using zero pulse
In this function, the counter value is set to the load value saved in the “Load value” parameter
(è Tab. 25 Load value) using the zero pulse of the encoder. This function must be enabled by setting
the “Enable setting zero” (è Tab. 29 Process data outputs (PDO)) control bit. If this function is
enabled, the counter value is set to the load value again for every zero pulse of the encoder.

2.2.3 Setting the counter using process data
In this function, the counter value is set to the load value saved in the “Load value” parameter
(è Tab. 25 Load value) using the “Set counter” control bit (è Tab. 29 Process data outputs (PDO)).
The load value is adopted as counter value once by means of a rising edge of the “Set counter” control
bit. The adoption of the counter value is signalled using the “Set counter” status bit. After resetting
the “Set counter” control bit, the “Counter set” status bit is reset once more.

2.3 “Block counter” function
In the “Block counter” function, the counter is blocked, and additional counting pulses are not taken
into account. When the counter is enabled once more, the counter starts from the current counter
value.
The following sources can be referred to when using the “Block counter” function:
– Input I3
– Process data
2.3.1 Blocking the counter using input I3
In this function, the counter is blocked using the input I3. The current counter value remains the same
and additional counting pulses are not taken into account. An active block of the counter using input
I3 is signalled using the “Status DI3” status bit (è Tab. 28 Process data inputs (PDI)).
If the counter block is cancelled (input I3 is not set), counting continues from the current counter
value.

2.3.2 Blocking the counter using process data
In this function, the counter is blocked using the “Block counter” control bit
(è Tab. 29 Process data outputs (PDO)). The current counter value remains the same and additional
counting pulses are not taken into account. An active block of the counter using the “Block counter”
control bit is signalled using the “Counter blocked” status bit (è Tab. 28 Process data inputs (PDI)).
If the counter block is cancelled (“Block counter” control bit is not set), counting continues from the
current counter value.

2.4 “Latching” function
The “Latching” function transfers the current counter value to the process data
(è Tab. 28 Process data inputs (PDI)) as a latching value without interrupting the count function.
Latching is triggered by the zero pulse from the encoder or by input I0, dependent on the setting of the
“Latching signal” parameter è Tab. 20 Latching signal.
The “Latching event” parameter sets whether latching is triggered on a rising and/or falling edge of
input I0 or of the zero pulse è Tab. 21 Latching event.
The counter value remains unchanged or is set to the load value, depending on the setting of the
“Latching response” parameter (è Tab. 22 Latching response).
In order to carry out latching, the “Latching” function must be enabled via input I1 and the “Block
latching” control bit (è Tab. 29 Process data outputs (PDO)) must be enabled.
A latching event is signalled using the “Latching set” status bit (è Tab. 28 Process data inputs (PDI))
and must be confirmed by setting the “Confirm latching” control bit. This resets the “Latching set”
status bit.
If additional latching events are identified before the “Confirm latching” control bit is confirmed, these
are ignored, and this status is signalled using the “Latching missed” status bit.
Setting the “Confirm latching” control bit also resets any “Latching missed” status bit that is present.
The image below shows, by way of example, the signal characteristics for latching with the following
parameter settings:
• Latching signal = digital signal I0
• Latching event = rising edge
• Latching response = load value

2.5 “Speed measurement” function
This function determines the number of encoder pulses within a set integration time.
The value determined for speed measurement is the sum of encoder pulses recorded within the set
integration time and can be converted into an actual speed by taking the resolution and time into con-
sideration.
