GETTING STARTED
Thank you for purchasing Hunter Douglas Duette®and Applause®Honeycomb Shades. With
proper installation, operation, and care, your new shade(s) will provide years of beauty and
performance.
Please thoroughly review this instruction booklet and the enclosed packing list before
beginning the installation.
Tools and Fasteners Needed
 Flat blade and Phillips screwdrivers
 Measuring tape and pencil
 Needle-nose pliers
 Level (laser level is recommended)
 Power drill,

⁄ 32 " drill bit, and
1
⁄ 4 " hex driver
In addition, you will need fasteners designed to work with your specific mounting surface(s).
 #6 Hex Head Screws (Provided). Two 1

⁄ 2 " screws are provided per bracket kit.
 Longer #6 Hex Head Screws (Not Provided). If using spacer blocks, use #6 screws
long enough for a secure attachment.
 Speed Nuts and Screws (Provided). Extension brackets come with speed nuts and
screws.
 Drywall Anchors (Not Provided). Use drywall anchors when mounting into drywall.

Installation Overview
 Your order will include four specialty brackets per shade.
 Specialty brackets are required for both the headrail and the bottom rail. They are
mounted at the top and bottom of the window opening.
Mounting Types and Window Terminology
If the specialty brackets are mounted correctly, the rest of the installation process follows
easily. To prepare for this important first step, review the mounting types and basic window
terminology illustrated below.

Mount the Specialty Brackets — Inside Mount
 Your order will include four specialty brackets.
 Bend the two tabs of the bracket templates downward and insert the tabs into the holes
in the headrail and bottom rail as shown below.
IMPORTANT: Make sure the double-sided tape on the bracket templates is facing away
from the rail.
 Remove the backing from the double-sided tape on the bracket templates.
 Place each rail inside the window opening at the desired mounting location.
 Press each rail against the mounting surface until the templates stick to the mounting
surface.
 Carefully remove the shade from the window opening.
IMPORTANT: Make sure the templates stay on the mounting surface.

 Mark the screw holes.
 Carefully remove the templates from the mounting surfaces.
 Drill the screw holes using a

⁄ 32 " drill bit.
 Attach the specialty brackets using the screws provided.
IMPORTANT: The specialty brackets should be aligned and level with each other.
Proceed to “Install the Shade” on page 8.
Mount the Specialty Brackets — Outside Mount
 Your order will include four specialty brackets.
 Center the headrail over the window opening at the desired height. Use a pencil to lightly
mark each end of the headrail.
 Alternatively, measure the width of the headrail and use that width to mark the rail
end points at the top of the window opening.
 Measure from each end of the headrail to the center of the rectangular hole and mark the
position of each specialty bracket for the headrail.
 Repeat the above steps for the bottom rail.

 Center the specialty brackets on your marks, then mark each of the screw holes.
 A minimum flat vertical surface of
5
⁄ 8 " is required to mount the brackets.
 The top of the specialty brackets or extension brackets should be at the desired shade
height.
IMPORTANT: The specialty brackets must be level and aligned to each other.
CAUTION: The rear of the specialty brackets must be flush against a flat mounting
surface. Do not mount brackets on curved molding.
 Drill the screw holes using a

⁄ 32 " drill bit.
CAUTION: Use drywall anchors when mounting into drywall.
 Attach the specialty brackets or extension brackets at the top and bottom of the window
opening using the screws provided.
IMPORTANT: The front edges of the specialty brackets must be level and aligned to
eachother.

 If using spacer blocks with specialty brackets, attach the spacer block(s) and specialty
bracket to a flat vertical mounting surface with #6 mounting screws long enough for a
secure installation.
CAUTION: The rear spacer block must be flush against a flat mounting surface. Do not
mount spacer blocks and specialty brackets on curved molding.
 Each spacer block projects the specialty bracket

⁄ 2 " from the mounting surface. A
maximum of 1

⁄ 2 " of spacer blocks per specialty bracket is recommended.
 The solid side of the spacer blocks faces the mounting surface.
 If using extension brackets, attach a specialty bracket to the underside of each extension
bracket using the provided screws and speed nuts.
NOTE: Repeat the steps for the bottom rail.

Install the Shade
 Install the shade into the specialty brackets.
IMPORTANT: Install the headrail into the
brackets first, then install the bottom rail.
 Hold the rail at a high angle, then push the
rail into the brackets and rotate toward the
window frame until the rail latches.
CAUTION: Make sure the bracket tabs are
on top of the rubber flap as you rotate and
latch the rail, as shown to the side and below.
IMPORTANT: Make sure the fabric is not
caught between the bracket tabs and the rail
and that the spring tabs are on the back of
the rail.

Check the Tension (For Operable Shades Only)
 Slowly push down on the top moving rail handle a few inches. Allow the fabric to stack
evenly, then stop. The top moving rail should remain steady and should not sag down.
 Slowly push up on the bottom moving rail handle a few inches. Allow the fabric to stack
evenly, then stop. The bottom moving rail should remain steady and should not sag down.
 If one or both of the moving rails sagged down instead of remaining steady, the tension
needs to be increased.
Adjust the Tension, If Necessary
Remove the bottom rail from the brackets.
 Push the rail against the brackets to
release the rail from the latch, then lift
the rail out of the brackets.
 Lift the bottom rail to locate the two pockets
on the underside of the rail.
NOTE: Sidelight shades that are 4" to 7

wide only have one Easy Adjust™pocket.
 Fully insert the
7
⁄ 64 " Easy Adjust key into the
pocket. The key is fully inserted when the base
of the key abuts to the pocket.
 Turn the key clockwise to increase the tension
or counter-clockwise to decrease the tension.
 Begin by turning the key one-quarter turn, in
the same direction, for each pocket.
IMPORTANT: The Easy Adjust key must
be fully inserted to avoid stripping the
mechanism. Do not pull down on the rail while
turning the key.
 After pocket adjustments are made, remove
the key and install the bottom rail back into
the specialty brackets.
 Recheck the tension on both moving rails.
 If further adjustments are needed, repeat the
above steps.

Operate the Shade
For better support and smoother operation, use the handle when raising and lowering the
shade.
Top-Down or Bottom-Up Shades:
To Raise or Lower the Moving Rail
 Slowly and steadily push up or down on the moving rail
handle. Allow the fabric to stack evenly.
Top-Down/Bottom-Up Shades:
To Raise or Lower the Moving Rails
 Slowly and steadily push up or down on the moving rail handles. Allow the fabric to stack
evenly.
 To completely lower the shade (fabric stack at the bottom), first lower the bottom moving
rail fully, then lower the top moving rail.
 To completely raise the shade (fabric stack at the top), first raise the top moving rail fully,
then raise the bottom moving rail.

Problem
The shade will not snap into the mounting brackets.
Solution Check that the specialty brackets are level and aligned. Shim the specialty
brackets to level the headrail, if necessary.
Be sure the heads of the screws are flush against the specialty bracket.
Check that the headrail is completely inserted into the specialty brackets.
See “Install the Shade” on page 8.
Problem
The shade does not raise or lower evenly.
Solution Make sure the specialty brackets are level and aligned.
Make sure that the shade fabric is not caught between the specialty bracket
and the headrail or bottom rail.
The cord tension may be uneven. See “Adjust the Tension, If Necessary” on
page 9.
Problem
The shade is too easy or too hard to raise or lower, or will not raise
or lower.
Solution Make sure that the shade fabric is not caught between the specialty bracket
and the headrail or bottom rail.
Check that the specialty brackets are level and aligned. Shim the specialty
brackets to level the headrail, if necessary.
If the shade is too easy to raise and lower, or the moving rail(s) sag downward
instead of remaining steady, then increase the cord tension. If the shade is
too hard to raise or lower, then decrease the cord tension. See “Adjust the
Tension, If Necessary” on page 9.

the rail out of the brackets.
Cleaning Procedures
Hunter Douglas Duette®and Applause®Honeycomb Shades are made of anti-static,
dust-resistant fabric which repels dirt and dust. For most honeycomb fabrics, the following
cleaning options are available.
Dusting
 Regular light dusting with a feather duster is all the cleaning needed in most
circumstances.
Vacuuming
CAUTION: Do not vacuum Elan®fabrics.
 For deeper cleaning, vacuum gently with a brush attachment.
Compressed Air/Hair Dryer (Cool Setting)
 Use compressed air or a hair-dryer on a cool setting to blow dust and dirt off shades.
Spot-Cleaning
CAUTION: Do not spot-clean Alexa, Alexa Metallic™, Apollo™, Calypso™, Commercial, Elan,
Applause Esprit™, India Silk, Jardin, Leela, Macon™, and all Batiste fabrics.
 Prepare a solution of warm water and a mild detergent.
 Dampen a clean cloth in the solution and wring it out.
 Dab the spot with the dampened cloth until it is removed. Do not rub the fabric.
 Allow the shade to dry in the completely lowered (or closed) position.

Bathtub Cleaning/Water Immersion
CAUTION: Do not immerse Alexa, Alexa Metallic™, Calypso™, Commercial, Elan®, India
Silk, all Batiste fabrics, all Alustra®Duette®fabrics, and all room-darkening fabrics. Do not
immerse Applause®Esprit™fabrics.
 Immerse the shade in a basin or bathtub filled with warm water and a mild detergent.
IMPORTANT: Never immerse the headrail and bottom rail into the solution.
 Rinse with clean water.
 Before removing from the rinse water, fully raise the shade and tilt it to allow excess
water to drain off.
 Dry the shade completely in the lowered (or closed) position.
Ultrasonic Cleaning
CAUTION: Do not ultrasonically clean Commercial, Batiste 1
1
⁄ 4 ” Semi-Sheer, and all
room-darkening fabrics.
 Specify that a mild detergent solution be used.
IMPORTANT: Never immerse the headrail and bottom rail into the solution.
 Dry the shade completely in the lowered (or closed) position.
Injection/Extraction Cleaning
This type of professional cleaning injects a cleaning solution into the fabric and extracts the
dirty solution in the same motion.
 Use only the dry method of injection/extraction for Elan fabrics.
 If using injection/extraction for Alexa and Batiste Bamboo fabrics, specify that no
chemicals are used (water only).
Headrail Cleaning
CAUTION: Never use abrasive cleaning methods or harsh chemicals.
 Dampen a soft, clean cloth in warm water and wring it out.
 Gently wipe the headrail to remove dirt and dust.
