GETTING STARTED

Thank you for purchasing Hunter Douglas Duette®Skyrise®Hard-Wired Motorized honeycomb
shades. With proper installation, operation, and care, your new shades will provide years of beauty
and performance. Please thoroughly review this instruction booklet before beginning the installation.
Mounting Types And Window Terminology
If the installation brackets are mounted correctly, the rest of the installation process follows very
easily. To prepare for this important first step, review the mounting types and basic window
terminology illustrated below.
Installation Components Needed
Duette Skyrise Hard-Wired Motorized shades ship with a motor ONLY, unless a power supply,
the Platinum™wall switch and remote control are specified at the time of ordering.
If you are using an alternative home automation solution, please refer to the Appendix and the
Troubleshooting section for information concerning wire layout and setting shade positions.
Check the packaging to be sure you have all the components needed to install your shade. Keep
the packaging until the shades perform to your satisfaction.
Required Components
Installation Brackets (Inside Mounts).
■There should be a minimum
of four installation brackets per shade and two mounting screws per
installation bracket.
Universal Mounting Bracket (Outside Mount And
■
Side-By-Side Mounts). There should be a minimum of eight universal
mounting brackets per shade and one mounting screw per bracket.
Self-Tapping Headrail Screws (Outside Mount).
■Quantities vary
depending upon the headrail width.
Side Rail Screws (Outside Mount).
■There should be one side rail
screw for each side rail insert.
Threaded Stand-Off Screws (Side-By-Side Mount).
■There should be
one stand-off screw for each installed threaded stand-off.
Collectively, the sills and
jambs are called the
“window casement.”

GETTING STARTED
Rail Seal (Inside Mount).■Rail seal may be
pre-attached to the rails prior to shipment. Otherwise,
attaching the rail seal is done prior to installing the shade.
Support Cord (Shades Over 48" Wide).
■On wider shades,
a support cord is attached. For adjustment, refer to the
Troubleshooting section, Adjusting the Support Cord Tension
on page 18.
Optional Components
■8-Amp DC Power Supply. The number of power supplies
required varies with the number of installed shades.
An 8-amp power supply provides power for up to 2 shades.
➤
■Platinum™Technology Wall Switch. The wall switch is one
type of “controller” available for motorized shades. One wall switch per
shade is required. In addition to operating shades UP
▲ and DOWN ▼,
two preset stops may be programmed using the wall switch.
Remote Control.
■Remote control operation is available with the
Platinum™Technology remote control.
■14AWG-3 Conductor + Ground Wire (only 2 conductors are used for
low voltage systems). Hunter Douglas recommends 14 gauge-
3 conductor wire plus ground wire (14/4) be run from every window
location to a central location (aka “homerun”) for every installation,
when pre-wiring a project. This gauge wire meets or exceeds most of
the power criteria required for various products. Wire is not supplied,
but is available at your local hardware store.
IMPORTANT: If you are unsure as to local electrical codes, consult a low-voltage installer
or a certified professional. Consult a home automation professional if integrating to a home
automation system.

In addition, you will need fasteners designed to work with your specific mounting surface(s).
#6 Hex Head Screws (Provided).
■Two 11∕2" screws are provided per installation bracket.
Longer Hex Head Screws (Not Provided).
■If using spacer blocks, use a #6 screw long
enough for a secure attachment.
Wall Anchors or Expansion Bolts (Not Provided).
■If mounting into drywall, you will need
wall anchors or expansion bolts to ensure a secure installation.
Speed Nuts and Screws (Provided).
■Extension brackets come with screws and speed nuts.
Power Supply Requirements
Check to be sure you have the correct number of power supplies for the installation.
■
CAUTION: To prevent accidental short circuits and avoid possible component damage, do not
plug the power supply into the wall outlet until the wiring connections are complete.
WARNING! Do not cut the AC power cord
on the back side of the power supply.
Electric shock and/or a fire hazard
may result.
With the power supply unplugged, snip off the
■
plastic connector attached to the DC output
cord on the front of the power supply.
■Strip the 8-amp power
supply sheathing back and trim
down the bare wire, since it is
not used. Strip the ends of the
other two wires.

Assemble The Shade On The Ground
Unpack the shade. Carefully remove the wrapping from around the shade.
■Do not cut the
wrapping.
Locate the wire exiting the headrail.
■
Cut off the blue, male connector at the end of the wire.■
Strip the end of the wire.■
Arrange the shade components for assembly. Position■
the components on the floor as shown below. Place the
assembly with the fabric facing up.
Attach the side rails.
■
Starting where the fabric stacks, insert one➤
end of the side rail at a 45° angle. Swing
the bottom end toward the shade. Snap into
the pulley assembly.

For Side-By-Side Mounts Only
Label the side
■
rails with the
shade number and
whether they fit on
the left or right side
of the shade, as
illustrated.
Place the
■
corresponding
connecting side
rails next to each
other, according to the previously made labels. Each connecting pair of side rails will have
one rail with stand-off screws installed and the other will not.
Attach the side rails for each shade (as shown on the bottom of page 5.)
■
Test Shade Operation
To determine if adjustments are necessary, test the shade in
the same orientation on the floor as it will be mounted in the
window opening.
CAUTION: To prevent accidental short circuits and avoid
possible component damage, do not plug the power supply
into the wall outlet until the wiring connections are complete.
Connect the wires from the power supply directly to the
■
wires from the shade.
Plug the power supply into an outlet.
■
Turn the power switch to the ON position.■
The shade should immediately begin to lower. If not, unplug the AC power, reverse the➤
connections, and replug the power into an outlet.
Raise and lower the moving rail several times by switching the wire connections. Be sure
■
to unplug the power supply each time you reverse the connections. The shade should raise
and lower smoothly. If not, refer to Troubleshooting on page 15.
On shades over 48" wide, check the support cord for any sagging. If adjustments need to be■
made, refer to the Troubleshooting section, Adjusting the Support Cord Tension on page 18.
CAUTION: Never use a lubricant of any kind on the Duette®with Skyrise®system.
Lubricants can cause operational failure and long-term component damage.

Installation — Inside Mounts
Mount The Installation Brackets
Position installation brackets.
■
Place the installation bracket in a vertical➤
position with the bottom end of each bracket
11/2" in from the sill opening. ❶
Roll the bracket so that the holes touch the side jamb.

Drill the screw holes and using the provided screws, mount the installation brackets into
➤
each corner of the window frame.
Rail Seal Attachment
■Attach the rail seal to the rails at the point where the
rails make contact with the window casement.
If the side rails are flush with the mounting surface,
➤
apply the rail seal to the sill rail only. If there is
clearance between the side rails and the mounting
surface, apply the rail seal to all rails.
Apply the rail seal so that it curves toward the front of the shade.
➤
Adjoin the ends of the rail seal together for a tight fit.➤
Install The Shade
■Connect the leads from the shade to the ends of
the wire going to the controller.

Install The Side-By-Side Shades
■Connect the leads from the first shade to
the ends of the wire going to the controller.
For wiring specifications, refer to the
Appendix section, Laying Out The Wire and
Wiring For The Platinum™Technology Wall
Switch on pages 24-25.
■Slip the upper portion of the shade into the
window frame. Make sure the installation
brackets fit into the notches on the plastic
hooks (inset).
■Attach universal mounting brackets to the
open side of the shade.
Install one mounting bracket at the top
➤
corner of the shade, one at the bottom
corner of the shade, and one over each threaded
stand-off hole (to be mounted to the mullion).
Align one of the holes on the long side of the universal
➤
mounting bracket with the threaded stand-off hole or
the end of the threaded stand-off. ❶
Attach the short side of the bracket to the mullion.
➤❷
IMPORTANT: The threaded stand-offs must align
with one of the holes in the long side of the universal
mounting brackets attached to the mullions.
■Install the rest of the shades in the side-by-side mounting group.
CAUTION: Be careful not to pinch or damage the cables.
Attach the connecting side rails by screwing stand-off
■
screws into the threaded stand-offs.
Insert the stand-off screw through the hole in the side rail.
■
Align the screw with the stand-off in the connecting side rail■
and tighten it securely.
IMPORTANT: If you are attaching the shade to mullions, attach the universal mounting
brackets to the next mullion after installing each shade.
IMPORTANT: If the screws do not line up with the stand-offs, check to make sure the
correct side rails are matched.

Installation — Outside Mounts
Plan The Installation
With outside mount applications, use the universal
■
mounting brackets to attach the side rails, headrail,
and sill rail to the mounting surface.
■Three holes on the long side of the
mounting bracket allow for a variety of rail
attachments and a choice of clearances
between the shade and he mounting surface.
■The bracket can be attached to the mounting
surface with the short side exposed or hidden by
the rails. To hide the short side, there must be
enough clearance for the head of the mounting
screw. The exact amount of clearance depends
upon the type of screw.

■Attach universal mounting brackets to the rails.
The back sides of the different types of
➤
rails will be different distances from the
mounting surface depending upon how
the bracket is mounted. For example,
if the side rails are flush against the
mounting surface, the back side of
the headrail will be about 1/8" from the
mounting surface, while the back side of
the sill rail will be 3/8" from the surface:
➤Attach universal mounting brackets to the side rails.
Maximum recommended clearance between the short
side of the bracket and the back of the side rail is 1/4".
Where the long side is connected determines the amount
of clearance between the back of the side rail and the
mounting surface. Position the brackets to mount the side
rails flush with the mounting surface or to obtain any
necessary clearance for side rail mounting screws or
obstructions. Position the brackets with the short side
exposed or hidden, as required by the installation.
➤Attach universal mounting brackets to
the headrail and, with “stack
bottom” shades, the sill headrail.
Space the brackets approximately
12" from each end. Add additional
brackets, if necessary, spaced
evenly so that the brackets are no
more than 36" apart. If the headrail
is less than 36" wide, attach one
bracket only, centered along the
length of the headrail. Attach the
brackets with the self-tapping
headrail screws provided. When
positioning the short side of the
brackets, add 1/8" to the side rail
clearance determined previously.
This makes the minimum headrail
clearance 1/8" and the recommended
maximum clearance 3/8".

➤Attach the universal mounting brackets
to the sill rail with a minimum clearance of
3/8" and a recommended maximum
clearance of 5/8". One or two headrail
screws may be used to attach the brackets.
Brackets are attached to the sill rail with
“stack top” shades only. With “stack
bottom” shades, the brackets are attached
to the sill headrail, as shown.
IMPORTANT: If the sill rail is supported
by a horizontal sill, it is not necessary to
attach it unless support cords are used.
➤A trimmed bracket may be used to mount
the sill rail to the sill. The trimmed bracket
is first attached to the sill rail using a
self-tapping headrail screw. Next the shade
is raised into position and the bracket
location is marked on the sill. The bracket
is then removed from the sill rail, mounted
to the sill, and attached to the rail when the
shade is installed.
Install The Outside Mounted Shade
If the short sides of the mounting brackets are
exposed: Raise the shade to its final location and
attach the universal mounting brackets with self-
tapping mounting screws.
If the short sides of the mounting brackets are
hidden:
Raise the shade to its final location and use the
■
mounting brackets to mark where to attach them to
the mounting surface.
Remove the brackets from the shade and install
■
them on the mounting surface.
After installing the mounting brackets, attach the
■
shade to the brackets with the appropriate screws.

■Connect the wiring to the shade.
Connect the wire leads from the shade to the already
■
installed 14/4 gauge wire using wire nuts. For correct
wire connections refer to the Appendix section,
Laying Out The Wire and Wiring For The Platinum™
Technology Wall Switch on pages 24-25.
Installation — Side-By-Side Outside Mounts
Measure the overall width of the mounting group.■
Mark the mounting surface so that the outer shades will extend an equal amount beyond the■
sides of the window opening.
Measure and mark locations for the universal mounting brackets. Refer to
■Installation For
Outside Mounts on page 10 for bracket attachment to the headrails, sill rails, and side rails.
■Install the first shade in the side-by-side mounting group.
Attach the connecting side rails of the first shade
■
to the second shade, by screwing stand-off
screws into the threaded stand-offs.
Insert the stand-off screw through the hole in
➤
the side rail.
Align the screw with the stand-off in the

connecting side rail and tighten it securely.
IMPORTANT: Be careful not to pinch or
damage the cables. If you are attaching
the shade to mullions, attach the universal
mounting brackets to the next mullion after
installing each shade.

Operate The Shade
Platinum™Technology Wall Switch Operation
For information regarding operation and programming
of the Platinum™Technology Wall Switch, refer to your
Platinum Technology Wall Switch Guide For Hard-wired
Systems.
Platinum Technology Remote Operation
For information regarding operation and programming of the
Platinum Technology Remote Control, refer to your Platinum
Technology Remote Control Guide.
Third Party Remote Control Operation
Third party infrared (IR) remote controls (i.e. unversal remotes)
can be used to operate Duette®Skyrise®Hard-Wired Motorized
shades that are wired directly to a Platinum Technology wall
switch. These remotes can “learn” the commands necessary to
raise or lower motoirzed shades.

Problem Solution
The shade does■
not raise and
lower smoothly.
Check that the cable is not caught or twisted anywhere in the
■
side rails.
Check if the motor runs at all. If not, refer to solution on page 20.
■
Check that the moving rail end caps stay within the side rails■
along the shade’s full range of movement.
Test the cable tension.
■If the shade stops and starts while
the motor runs at a constant speed, this may be caused by the
cable being too loose. Momentarily increase the cable tension
by pulling one of the cables from the side rail toward the center
of the shade. If the shade then begins to run smoothly, adjusting
the cable tension is required. See Troubleshooting section,
Adjusting The Cable Tension on page 16.
Check that the moving rail is level.
■If it is not, see

Check if the support cord is too loose or too tight.

Adjusting Cable Tension
Set the cable tension so that the pulley on the left end of the sill

rail is all the way up and the pulley on the right end is raised only
slightly from its lowest position.
IMPORTANT: As the shade is operated, the cable tension will
divide between the two pulleys.
Pull out the side rail while you push in and lift the left end of the
■
moving rail.

With the cable ends pointing in opposite directions, loosen the

screw in the end cap with a Phillips screwdriver.
Hold the screwdriver in the screw and slip the left end cap back■
inside the side rail. The screwdriver prevents the screw from
being hidden by the side rail.
■Set the correct cable tension by
pulling the cables in opposite
directions. Then maintain that
tension by pulling the cables
over the side rail and
holding them with one
hand. Tighten the
screw with the
screwdriver in
your other hand.

Problem Solution
The moving rail is not
level.
Leveling The Moving Rail
Determine if the moving rail

is level by measuring the
distance from the headrail
to each end of the moving
rail. Make sure that they
are equal.
Adjust the rail by pulling

out the right side rail
while pushing in the
moving rail to expose
the screw in the right
end cap.
Loosen the set screw with a Phillips screwdriver.

Adjust the rail by sliding it up or down to level it to the sill rail.■
After adjusting the rail, re-tighten the set screw.■
When the shade is in

the support cord is
sagging.
