Safety and General Information
WARNING:
All batteries can cause property damage and/or bodily injury such as burns if a conductive
material such as jewelry, keys or beaded chains touches exposed terminals. The material may
complete an electrical circuit (short circuit) and become quite hot. Exercise care in handling any
charged battery, particularly when placing it inside a pocket, purse or other container with metal
objects.
Do not replace or charge batteries in potentially explosive atmosphere. Contact sparking may
occur while installing or removing batteries and cause an explosion.
Due to the risk of electrical shock or other physical injury, do not insert your hands into the
charger pocket.

enclosed with your radio which contains important operating instructions for safe usage and

Operational Warnings
Vehicles With Air Bags
WARNING:
• Do not place a portable radio or install radio communications equipment in the area over an
air bag or in the air bag deployment area. Air bags inflate with great force. If a portable radio
is placed in the air bag deployment area and the air bag inflates, the radio may be propelled
with great force and cause serious injury to occupants of the vehicle.
• Installation of vehicle communication equipment should be performed by a qualified
professional installer or technician. Air bag size, shape, and deployment area can vary by
vehicle make, model, and front compartment configuration such as bench seat, bucket seats
and others.
• Contact the vehicle manufacturer corporate headquarters, if necessary, for specific air bag
information for the vehicle make, model, and front compartment configuration involved in
your communication equipment installation.
Blasting Caps and Blasting Areas
WARNING: To avoid possible interference with blasting operations, turn off your radio and
remove it from the charger when you are near electrical blasting caps, in a blasting area, or in
areas posted: “Turn off two-way radio.” Obey all signs and instructions.

Warranty Replacement
Motorola Solutions warrants the Vehicle Charger against defects in material and workmanship under
normal use and service for a period of one year from shipment.
Items will be repaired or replaced free of charge for the full warranty period. Freight charges to and
from the place where warranty replacement is provided shall be the customer’s responsibility. Motorola
Solutions is not responsible in any way for defects or damages caused by to the product resulting from
the following causes:
• Defects or damage resulting from use of the product in other than its normal operation as specified
in the instruction manual.
• Defects or damage from misuse, accident, or neglect.
• Defects or damage from improper disassembly, testing, operation, maintenance, installation,
adjustment, alteration, repair, or any modification by the Customer or any person without prior
written consent of Motorola Solutions.

Chapter 1
Vehicle Charger Overview
The vehicle charger kit is used for charging a radio or battery alone when inside a vehicle. The vehicle
charger kit includes a mounting bracket to mount the unit inside the vehicle and wire harness.
NOTE: Vehicle Repeater System (VRS) status LED and VRS status toggle switch are only used
when there is a repeater and radio is not inserted.

NOTE:
IMPRES 2 batteries with self-calibration and recondition icon on the bat-
tery label does not require periodic calibration and reconditioning in the
IMPRES 2 desktop charger.
To engage into the vehicle charger for proper charging, the battery requires battery adapter,
PMPN4649_.
The charger uses a microprocessor to sense the type of battery inserted and control the rate of charge
accordingly. A battery is charged at a rapid rate until it is more than 90 % charged and then it trickles
the charge until the battery is more than 95 % charged. The charger then switches to a maintenance
charge mode to keep the battery fully charged.
The charger has IMPRES 2 charger with battery communication feature. The charger logs in charging
events and data in the IMPRES 2 battery. The charger does not have automated reconditioning as
the IMPRES 2 desktop chargers do. The vehicle charger does not initialize a new IMPRES 2 battery.
To maintain the fuel gauge capability on the appropriate radio for an initial calibration and subsequent
recommended recalibration, the unit indicates when the IMPRES 2 battery needs to be taken to an
IMPRES 2 desktop charger for reconditioning or calibration.
The charger can charge either a battery that is attached to a radio or just the battery alone. This allows
a spare battery to be maintained in a fully charged condition.
To ensure optimized charging performance, turn off the radio while charging unless the radio is
transmitting data wirelessly on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
NOTE: Excessive use of a radio while it is in the charger results in discharging the battery.
The vehicle charger has a Vehicle Repeater System (VRS) toggle switch which provides repeater
functionality when the VRS is turned On.

Securing the Radio in the Vehicle
Charger
The APX Next vehicle charger is equipped with a feature that reduces the risk of a portable radio
or battery in the pocket from becoming dislodged and potentially hazardous in the event of a vehicle
collision.
Operators are instructed to follow the vehicle charger installation instructions.
Prerequisites:
Before securing the radio in the vehicle charger, you must be familiar with the followings:
• The ballistic nylon strap - Tri-Glide adjustment between battery alone or radio with battery attached
• The retention housing - latch
• The engagement bar - faceplate
When the vehicle charger is not in use, the latch may be engaged to the top engagement bar on the
faceplate.
To use the vehicle charger, disengage the latch from the top engagement bar on the faceplate.
Procedure:
• The followings are the procedures for portable radio or battery alone.

• The followings are the procedures for radios with an antenna installed.
1Loop the strap between the base of the antenna and base of the channel selector.
2Engage the latch onto the top engagement bar on the faceplate.
3To secure the radio with battery attached within the vehicle charger, adjust the strap through
the Tri-Glide.

Operating the Vehicle Charger
CAUTION: Never place any objects other than a radio and battery into the charger pocket. This
could damage the charger.
Operation of the charger is automatic. When a portable radio or a battery is not in the charger pocket,
the charger is in the standby mode.
NOTE:
To calibrate the battery for optimal performance, ensure the initial charge of an IMPRES 2
battery is performed in an IMPRES 2 desktop charger. If the IMPRES 2 batteries are not
calibrated in an IMPRES 2 desktop charger, the IMPRES 2 radio does not display the fuel
gauge.
Procedure:
1To charge a battery, place the radio and battery or battery with adapter into the pocket and push
all the way in.
Ensure not to activate the radio emergency button when pushing the radio into the pocket.
If a battery with adapter is placed in the charger, ensure the contacts are facing down.
For APX Next1 battery, ensure the battery is installed into the PMPN4649_ adapter before
inserting into the charger.
To indicate the battery is being charged in the rapid charge mode, the steady red LED
illuminates when the battery is properly seated in the charger pocket.
2When the radio or battery are in the charger pocket, fasten the safety strap.
If a battery with adapter is in the pocket, fasten securely to prevent the battery from being
shaken out of the charger during rough traveling conditions and to prevent the battery from
becoming a dangerous projectile in the event of a vehicle crash.

Charging Indicators
LED charging indicator on the front panel of the charger indicates the charger status.

Blinking Red Battery is unable to charge or no proper contact
with the charger.
Blinking Amber Battery is recognized by charger but is waiting
to rapid charge. The battery temperature is too
low or high, low voltage, or charger may be too
hot for rapid charging. When this condition is
corrected, the battery automatically begins rap-
id charging.

LED Indicator Description
Single Blinking Green Power is applied to the charger and the ignition
switch has been turned On.
Blinking Green Battery is charged to 90 % or greater capacity.
Charger is in trickle charge mode.
Steady Red Battery in rapid charge mode.
Steady Green Battery is charged to 95 % or greater capacity.
Charger is in maintenance charge mode.
Alternating Red and Green Battery has completed charging and is fully
charged. Battery continues to be usable, but
may be nearing the end of battery rated service
life.
Applicable only for APX NEXT XN battery. Bat-
tery has been exposed to cumulative over tem-
perature. It is recommended to remove battery
from service.
Alternating Amber and Green Battery must be reconditioned or re-calibrated
in an IMPRES 2 desktop charger. Batteries not
calibrated does not display fuel gauge on IM-
PRES 2 radio.
NOTE: Your vehicle charger indicates recommended recalibration for the IMPRES 2 battery
by flashing alternating amber and green either in the first 4-seconds after initial insertion into
the vehicle charger or after charge completion. To calibrate the battery for maintaining optimal
performance, ensure that the battery is charged in an IMPRES 2 desktop charger within the
next few charge-cycles or days. When removing a recalibration recommended battery from the
vehicle charger and inserting it into an IMPRES 2 desktop charger within 30-minutes, a manual
reconditioning may be required. This is due to an IMPRES 2 feature which prevents battery
from over-charging and cycle life loss. If the recalibration recommended battery is outside of the
vehicle charger for more than 30-minutes prior to inserting it into an IMPRES 2 desktop charger,
automatic reconditioning occurs.
