Important Safety Instructions
This document contains important safety and operating instructions. Please read these instructions
carefully and save them for future reference.
Before using the battery charger, read all the instructions and cautionary markings on the charger, the
battery, and the radio using the battery.
WARNING:
• To reduce the risk of injury, charge only the rechargeable authorized batteries. Other batteries may
explode, causing personal injury and damage.
• To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury, only use the accessories recommended by
Motorola Solutions.
• To reduce the risk of damage to the power cord, pull the plug rather than the cord when
disconnecting power cord from the AC outlet or the charger.
• To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, avoid using an extension cord. If an extension cord must
be used, ensure that the cord size is 18 AWG for lengths of up to 100 feet (30.48 m), and 16 AWG
for lengths up to 150 feet (45.72 m).
• To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury, do not operate the charger if it is broken or
damaged in any way. Take it to a qualified Motorola Solutions service representative.
• To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not disassemble the charger. It is not repairable and
replacement parts are not available.
• To reduce the risk of electric shock, unplug the charger power adapter from the AC outlet before
attempting any maintenance or cleaning.

Operational Safety Guidelines
• This equipment is not suitable for outdoor use. Use only in dry locations or conditions.
• Connect the equipment only to an appropriately fused and wired supply of the correct voltage, as
specified on the product.
• Disconnect from line voltage by removing the main plug from the outlet.
• The socket outlet to which this equipment is connected must be close by and easily accessible.
• Maximum ambient temperature around the charger must not exceed 40 °C (104 °F).
• Ensure that the cord is located in an area that is safe from being stepped on, tripped over, or
subjected to water, damage, or stress.
• Output power from power supply unit must not exceed the ratings specified on the product label
located on the bottom of the charger.

Features and Benefits
The IMPRES energy solution is an advanced Tri-Chemistry energy system developed by Motorola
Solutions.
The system consists of IMPRES batteries, IMPRES Adaptive Charger, radio hardware, and software
which provides the capability for IMPRES compatible radios to communicate with IMPRES batteries.
The IMPRES Adaptive Charger, when used in conjunction with Motorola Solutions IMPRES batteries
provides the following benefits:
• Maximize battery life by significantly reducing heat during the trickle and post-charge cycles.
• Provide higher-rate IMPRES Lithium-Ion battery charging.
• Eliminate the need to train personnel to manage battery maintenance tasks
Using this unique patented system, there is no requirement to track and record IMPRES battery use,
conduct manual calibration cycles, or remove batteries from chargers after charging completion
The IMPRES Adaptive Charger monitors the usage pattern of the IMPRES battery, stores the
information in the IMPRES battery, and performs a calibration cycle only when needed.
The IMPRES Adaptive Charger does not overheat the IMPRES battery regardless of how long it is left
in the pocket. The charger monitors the battery and automatically charge the battery as required.

The charger pockets accommodate either a radio with an IMPRES battery attached and/or an IMPRES
battery alone.
The charger is equipped with a USB Type A power output that facilitates the charging of accessories
up to a maximum 7.5 W of power (5 V at 1500 mA). This USB Type A power output only provides
charge as it becomes available from the charger. The charge priority is given to radio charging and
battery charging.

Charging Procedure
When and where to use: The IMPRES™ Adaptive Charger System is a fully automated battery care
system.
Procedure:
1Plug the charger end of the power supply cord into the power receptacle located at the back of
the charger.
2Plug the wall receptacle end of the power supply cord into the appropriate AC outlet.
A successful power-up sequence is indicated by a single Green blink on the charger indicator.
3Insert a radio with an IMPRES battery or a stand alone IMPRES battery into the charger pocket.
aAlign the radio or battery contacts with the contacts in the charger pocket.
bPress the radio or battery into the pocket to ensure complete contact between charger and
radio or battery contacts.

cWhen the IMPRES battery is properly seated into the pocket, the charger indicator
illuminates, indicating the charger has recognized the presence of the battery. Refer to the
charging indicators in Table 3: IMPRES Battery Charging Indicators on page 14.
4To remove a radio or battery from the charger, pull straight up until the radio or battery
completely clears the charger housing.
3.1
Charging Indicators
The following table in only applicable when a battery is charged in the battery charging pocket. When a
radio is charged in the radio charging pocket, refer to the display and the LED charging indicator of the
radio respectively.

3.2
Initialization
The data in Motorola Solutions IMPRES batteries must be initialized by the charger the first time it is
charged to ensure the features of Motorola Solutions IMPRES batteries and the Adaptive Charging
System to be fully available.
This battery initialization is indicated by a Steady Amber light on the charger indicator. The process
is automatic, includes an initial calibration of the battery, and begins charging upon completion of this
process. This process requires time to initialize the battery. The battery should be left in the charger for
approximately 12 hours or more to complete the process. Do not remove the battery from the charger
until the Steady Green light is on.

3.3
Calibration Switch
The charger is equipped with a switch on the bottom of the unit that can be utilized to manually
terminate the calibration process (as a systemic, on going use case). The charger continues to provide
an indication that the battery needs to be calibrated.
To enable the calibration feature, push the switch located at the bottom of the charger to ON.

Automatic IMPRES Battery Calibration
The Motorola Solutions IMPRES Adaptive Charger is able to determine when to calibrate the battery
when used with a Motorola Solutions IMPRES battery.
NOTE: The radio charging pocket does not perform the calibration process.
The IMPRES battery must be outside from the IMPRES charger pocket for more than 30 minutes for
an automatic calibration and recondition.
When an IMPRES battery is properly inserted into the charger, the charger determines if it is
appropriate to calibrate the battery. If the battery needs calibration, the charger automatically indicates
a Steady Amber. This process may take up to 12 hours or more to complete, depending on the state of
charge and capacity rating of the battery when it is inserted.
For this process to be effective, the IMPRES battery must be allowed to complete the calibration or
recharge process. Leave the battery in the charger until the charger indicates a Steady Green. At the
completion of the calibration cycle, the charger automatically recharges the IMPRES battery.

3.5
Manually Terminating the Calibration Process
When and where to use: Calibration may be terminated at any time during the calibration process of a
Motorola Solutions IMPRES battery (Steady Amber).
Procedure:
1Remove the battery from the charger pocket.
2Within five seconds, reinsert the battery into the charger pocket.
The charger terminates the calibration process and begin the charging process. The charger
indicator changes to a Steady Red. The charger attempts to calibrate the battery at the next
battery insertion.
3.6
Manually Initiating the Calibration Process
Procedure:
1Insert the battery into the charger pocket.
2Within 2.5 minutes, remove the battery from the charger pocket.
3Within five seconds, reinsert the battery into the charger pocket.
The charger indicator changes from Steady Red to Steady Amber. This forces the charger to
calibrate and automatically recharge the battery. Two or three manual calibration cycles may be
required to rejuvenate the batteries, due to long term storage conditions.
3.7
IMPRES 2 or IMPRES End-of-Service-Life LED Indication
The charger may indicate IMPRES 2 or IMPRES battery End-of-Service by alternating Red and Green
LED upon successful completion of calibration or reconditioning.
When batteries are used, normal wear reduces available capacity. At the successful completion of
calibration or reconditioning, IMPRES chargers compare IMPRES 2 or IMPRES battery capacity to the
battery rated capacity. When the capacity is at a very low value, the IMPRES 2 or IMPRES battery may
be nearing its end of service. The IMPRES 2 or IMPRES battery remains usable. In some scenarios,
it may be preferable to deploy the battery to someone who does not require large battery capacity to
complete a work shift.
APX NEXT XN battery comes with high temperature detection feature that is detectable from IMPRES
2 charger with software version V2.02 or newer. When this feature is enabled, the status LED
flashes Red and Green alternately upon charge completion for battery that went through prolonged
exposure (exceeding 10 minutes cumulatively) under extreme high temperature environment. The
charger displays the following:

It is recommended to remove this battery out from the service.

Troubleshooting
The IMPRES Adaptive Charger incorporates the following features:
• A universal input power supply
• A constant current rapid charger
• A negative pulse conditioning charger
• A calibration unit
• A USB Type A Power Output
• A user selectable on or off switch for turning ON/OFF calibration.
The combination of the features above are unique in a desktop charger. Therefore, operation of the
radio with a battery attached while in the charger is not recommended.
During the calibration process, the battery becomes fully discharged. As a result, the radio may shut
down during calibration mode. During the charging process, radio operation may result in minimally
reduced radio performance and extended battery charge time.
When troubleshooting, always observe the color of the LED.

Check that the battery is inserted correctly.
Make sure that the power supply plug is secure-
ly plugged into the charger and an appropriate
AC outlet, and there is power to the outlet.
Blinking Red Indication
• Charger contact is not being made.
• Battery is not chargeable.
Remove the battery from the charger and re-
place it back into the charger.
• Verify that the battery is a Motorola Solu-
tions-authorized battery listed in Motorola
Solutions Authorized Batteries on page 12.
Other batteries may not charge.
• Remove power from the battery charger and
using a clean dry cloth, clean the gold metal
charging contacts of both the battery and the
charger.
• Replace battery.
Blinking Red Indication
• High voltage drop detected when charging a
radio or a radio and battery at the same time
using the USB cable connected to a comput-
er Charging Downstream Port (CDP). The
USB cable is too long or rated current is
below 1.5 A.
Replace with a shorter 1.5 A rated USB cable
or allow sufficient time for the radio to charge
up to a level where the Battery Charging LED
indicator returns to normal.

above 40 °C (104 °F), or the battery volt-
