Design & Function
Intended Use
The Ottobock Baxx Line expands our seating and positioning portfolio and is
designed to complement our seat cushions as part of our overall Seating Philosophy.
Ottobock Baxx Line, divided into the Aluminium Back Series (AL) and the Aluminium
Series Flat Top (AFT), provides posterior and lateral support to the trunk.
A choice of ve heights, three contours and eleven back widths provides a wide range
of shell shapes to match the individual support needs of the user. More than 160
possible combinations are available. A special highlight is the ability to choose
between several colours of the back shell. Ottobock Baxx are made from aluminium,
and easy to install. The Baxx system is designed to t a large variety of Ottobock
and third party wheelchairs.
Baxx Line positively aects the health and well-being of users due to their
ergonomic shape. Poor long-term sitting postures are associated with health
problems. The form and specic trunk support provided by the Baxx Line promotes
improved sitting postural stability and comfort.
Seating Philosophy
At Ottobock, we believe every wheelchair user has a unique combination of
requirements and priorities necessitating tailored wheelchair seating solutions, often
using a combination of dierent wheelchair and seating products.
Seating solutions should consider:
• User comfort: static and dynamic seating tolerance.
• Functional independence: postural inuences on mobility, communication,
eld of vision, breathing and swallowing, etc.
• Purposeful movement: vital for independence, mobility, comfort, and well-
being.
• Safety: risk management balanced against potential benets.
• Pelvic position: inuence on spinal shape, neck and head position.
• Foot position: impact on the pelvis position.
• Postural alignment and stability: eect of static and dynamic situation on
positioning (up/down slopes, traversing cambers or when the wheelchair is
used as a seat in a vehicle).
• Flexible postural changes: need for corrective support.
• Fixed postural changes: need to accommodate and support.
• Muscle tone: positioning inuences muscle tone and reexes.
• Tissue tolerance: vulnerability to pressure, shear, and unfavorable micro-
climate conditions.

alternative hardware or mounting brackets will void the warranty.

Tools Required
Installation Plan
The torque specications for the fasteners of Quick Release, 2-Point Pro, and 4-Point
Pro mounting hardware are as follows:
The tools required to install the Quick Release, 2-Point Pro, and 4-Point Pro
mounting hardware are as follows:
1. 4mm Hex Key
2. 10mm Wrench
3. Torque Wrench (N·m/in-lb)
Set up an installation plan before installing hardware on the back shell. This plan
should specify:
• Where the clamps should be located on the canes.
• The proper height of the hardware for the user.
• The correct angle and depth of the hardware for the user.
NOTICE
Only use the hardware supplied with the Baxx back support.
Do not substitute any other screws, brackets, or clamps. Use of
alternative hardware or mounting brackets will void the warranty.
WARNING Protect all backs from blunt forces that
may cause damage and/or breakage

Installation
Quick Release Mounting Hardware
Suitable for users who use their wheelchair as a seat in transportation, or require a
quick removal system for easy transfer into a vehicle. The Quick Release mechanism
is optimised for use by those with limited hand function, e.g. tetraplegics.
A. Install U-Block to Back Support
Overview
A. Install U-Block to Back Support.
B. Fasten Quick Release Latch to U-Block.
C. Attach Clamp Assemblies to Canes.
D. Tighten Hardware to Torque Specications.
1. Note the desired location for the U-Block along the pre-cut slots in the back
support.
2. Insert the stud plate from the front of the back support (the side facing the
user), through the pre-cut slot and align it with with the U-Block on the back
side of the back support at the point noted in the rst step.
3. Place a washer on each stud and thread an M6 x 1.0 nylon lock on each,
tightening the nuts enough to keep the U-block in position. Do not torque the
lock nuts at this time.
WARNING Quick Release Hardware should be installed
ONLY by a qualied service technician.

Installation
1. Insert two M6 x 1.0 x 20mm button head screws into split lock washers and at
washers. Using the 4mm hex key, attach the latch assembly as shown in the
image below.
B. Fasten Quick Release Latch to U-Block.
NOTICE
It is essential that the included split lock washers be used
at all four attachment points to maintain
the desired angle and depth adjustments of the back.
C. Attach Clamp Assemblies to Canes.
1. Visually determine the desired height of the back support on
the chair. Mark each cane with the location of the clamp
assemblies to achieve the desired height.
CAUTION Before use, conrm the latch levers are in the locked position.

D. Tighten Hardware to Torque Specications.
2. Loosen the M5 screws. Open the jaws of the
cane clamp and with the mounting stud facing
inward (towards the opposite cane), slide the
jaws over the cane. Align the clamp with the
mark made in the previous step and slightly
tighten with the 4mm hex key to secure it to
the cane.
3. Attach the back support to the canes by
aligning the mounting hardware with the cane
clamp studs. Make small adjustments to the
mounting hardware or cane clamps as
necessary to ensure smooth attachment and
detachment of the back support from the
chair.
1. When all adjustments have been made and the hardware is in the desired
position, torque the fasteners to the values specied on page 3, "Torque
Specications".
NOTICE The mounting hardware should be installed at equal heights to
the left and right sides, and parallel to the seat frame.
NOTICE Tighten the clamp screws to hold the receivers in place, but
allow for movement so you can adjust them in the next step.
NOTICE Latch centering may require width adjustment
of the mounting hardware on the back shell.
CAUTION
If the system is mounted on 1" canes,
use the M5 x 0.8 x 25mm socket head screws included,
instead of the M5 x 0.8 x 22mm socket head screws.
CAUTION If the hardware sticks or is not smooth, you may need to
realign the hardware receiving points on the canes.

Installation
Suitable for manual and powered wheelchair users who do not remove their back
support.
2-Point Pro Mounting Hardware
Overview
A. Install U-Block to Back Support.
B. Fasten 2-Point Assembly to U-Block.
C. Attach Clamp Assemblies to Canes.
D. Tighten Hardware to Torque Specications.
WARNING 2-Point Pro hardware should be installed
ONLY by a qualied service technician.
A. Install U-Block to Back Support.
1. Note the desired location for the U-Block along the pre-cut slots in the back
support.
2. Insert the stud plate from the front of the support (the side facing the user),
through the pre-cut slot and align it with the U-block on the back side of the
support at the point noted in the rst step.
3. Place a washer on each stud and thread an M6 x 1.0 nylon lock nut on each,
tightening the nuts enough to keep the U-block in position. Do not torque the
lock nuts at this time.
CAUTION Install the U-block before placing the cover on the back support.

B. Fasten 2-Point Assembly to U-Block.
C. Attach Clamp Assemblies to Canes.
1. Align the 2-Point mounting bracket and cane clamp with the assembled and
mounted U-block.
2. Insert two M6 x 1.0 x 20mm button head screws into split lock washers and at
washers. Using the 4mm hex key, attach the assembly as shown in the images
below.
1. Visually determine the desired height of the back support on
the chair. Mark each back post with the location of the clamp
assemblies to achieve the desired height.
NOTICE The mounting hardware should be installed at equal heights to
the left and right sides, and parallel to the seat frame.

D. Tighten Hardware to Torque Specications.
2. Loosen the M5 screws. Open the jaws of the cane clamp and with the mounting
stud facing inward (toward the opposite cane), slide the jaws over the cane.
Align the clamp with the mark made in the previous step and slightly tighten
with the 4mm hex key to secure it to the cane.
1. When all adjustments have been made and the hardware is in the desired
position, torque the fasteners to the values specied on page 3, "Torque
Specications".
NOTICE Tighten the clamp screws to hold the receivers in place, but
allow for movement so you can adjust them in the next step.
NOTICE Minimum and maximum adjustment
for the width of the hardware is 2.54 cm (1").
NOTICE AFT Series back supports oer an extra 2.54 cm (1") of width
adjustment (5.08 cm (2") total) due to a slot pre-cut in the shell.

4-Point Pro Mounting Hardware
Suitable for manual or powered wheelchair users who do not remove their back
support. Oers more depth and angle adjustment than the 2-Point Pro. 4-point
mounts on the back canes make this hardware particularly suitable for users prone
to higher levels of activity.
Overview
A. Install Bent Bracket to the Back Support.
B. Determine Height of Back Support on Canes.
C. Install Cane Clamps to Canes.
D. Install Back Support to Canes.

back support.
2. Insert the stud plate through the front of the back support (the side facing the
user), through the pre-cut slot, and align it with the bent bracket on the back

C. Install Cane Clamps to Canes.
1. Place one outer clamp (BR5022) and one inner clamp (BR5021) around the cane
at one of the locations marked in Step B. Fasten the clamp to the cane with one
of the 35mm socket head screws (HBR071) provided. Secure the screw tight
enough to hold the bolt in place, but still be able to adjust it.
2. Repeat the installation on the other
cane. The threaded sections of the
35mm bolts should face towards
the mid-line of the chair and be
rotated approximately 45° to the
rear of the chair to facilitate the
next step.
1. Hold the back support with bent brackets mounted up to the
canes and visually determine the desired height. The width may
have to be adjusted slightly for the brackets to reach the canes.
2. Mark the desired mounting location on the canes through the
top slot in the bent bracket.
B. Determine Height of Back Support on Canes.
NOTICE Clamp assemblies should be rotated out slightly.
Do not tighten completely at this stage.

D. Install Back Support to Canes.
1. Slide the back support
between the canes and line
up the top slots in the bent
brackets (BR5030) with the
screws in the cane clamps.
2. Rotate the clamps until the
35mm bolts (HBR071) slide
into the top slots in the bent
brackets (BR5030).
3. Place an inner clamp and
outer clamp around the cane
at the bottom slot of each
bent bracket and secure it
with a 35mm socket head
screw.
4. For each cane clamp, secure it
to the bent bracket by placing
a washer (HBR035) and a
nylon lock nut (HBR034) on
the threaded end of the
35mm socket head screw
(HBR071).
E. Tighten Fasteners to Torque Specication.
1. When all adjustments have been made and the hardware is in the desired
position, torque the fasteners to the values specied on page 3, Torque
Specications.
CAUTION
If you are able to fold the canes, the back support
should be in the folded position when transporting the
wheelchair, especially before loading for air travel.

approximately 1 in.

adjustment.
3. After nal adjustments
are complete, tighten
all nylon lock nuts (A)
as described on Page 3,
Torque Specications.
