1 Glossary of terms
Dangerous area Area to be monitored because it is dangerous for people.
Detection area Portion of the field of vision where detection is guaranteed.
Field of vision Sensor area of vision. It is composed of two areas: detection area
and uncertainty area. It can have two ranges: 110° and 50°
FMCW Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave
Machinery The system for which the dangerous area is monitored.
Monitored area Area actually monitored by the system. Includes the stopping area,
and only for access detection function, any pre-alarm area.
Pre-alarm area Only for the access detection function. Area where motion detec‐
tion triggers the closure of the dedicated auxiliary relay.
Stopping area Portion of the area monitored by the sensor where, if motion is
detected, the system safety relays are de-energized. If it does not
correspond to the dangerous area defined in the risk assessment,
the residual risk must be calculated and additional safety mea‐
sures must be introduced.
Tolerance area Portion of the monitored area where detection is not guaranteed.

2.1 Information on this manual
2.1.1 Scope
This manual describes how safeRS is integrated as a protective measure for the operat‐
ing staff of the machine and how to safely install, use and service it.
These instructions do not pertain to the functioning of the machinery where safeRS is
installed.
This document is included with the following SICK part numbers (this document in all
available language versions):

2.1.2 Obligations with regard to this manual
NOTE
this manual is an integral part of the product and must be kept for its entire working
life.
It must be consulted for all situations related to the life cycle of the product from its
delivery through to decommissioning.
It must be conserved so that it is accessible to operators, in a clean location and in
good condition. In the event of manual loss or damage, contact Customer Assistance
Service.

3.1 Safety information
3.1.1 Safety messages
Warnings related to safety of the user and equipment as envisaged in this document
are as follows:

3.1.4 Foreseen use
safeRS is certified as SIL 2 according to IEC/EN 62061 and PL d in accordance with EN
ISO 13849-1. Performs the following safety functions:
•Access detection: In access protection, people are detected if their whole body
passes through the protective field. This type of protective device is used for the
protection of access to hazardous areas. A stop signal is initiated if the hazardous
area is entered.
•Restart prevention: Depending on the regulations which apply at the place of
installation, a restart prevention may be required. The restart prevention prevents
the machine from automatically starting up, for example after a protective device
has responded while the machine is operating or after changing the machine’s
operating mode. If movements within the hazardous area are detected, the safety
relays are kept in the open state, i.e. the safety-related enabling current paths are
interrupted.
safeRS is suitable for recognizing the entire body of a person.
safeRS has been designed to monitor dangerous areas in industrial environments.
Thanks to IP67 protection grade, the sensors are suitable for indoor and outdoor
installations.
The safeRS sensor is also a type 3 housing according to UL 50E.
safeRS is technically identical to the LBK System from manufacturer Inxpect.
The safeRS control unit is technically identical to the LBK-C22 from manufacturer
Inxpect.
safeRS sensor is technically identical to the LBK-S01 from manufacturer Inxpect.
3.1.5 General warnings
•Wrong installation and configuration of the system decreases or inhibits the pro‐
tective function of the system. Follow the instructions provided in this manual for
correct installation, configuration and validation of the system.
•Changes to the system configuration may compromise the protective function of
the system. After any changes made to the configuration, validate correct function‐
ing of the system by following the instructions provided in this manual.
•If the configuration of the system allows entering the hazardous area without
detection, additional safety measures must be implemented (e.g. physical guards).
•The presence of static objects, especially metallic objects, within the field of view
can lead to limitations in the detection accuracy of the sensor. That is why the field
of view of the sensor must be kept free of objects.
•The system protection level (SIL 2, PL d) must be compatible with the require‐
ments set forth in the risk assessment.
•Check that the temperature of the areas where the system is stored and installed
is compatible with the storage and operating temperatures indicated in the techni‐
cal data of this manual.
3.1.6 Warnings for the restart prevention funktion
The restart prevention function is not guaranteed in blind spots. If required by the risk
assessment, implement adequate safety measures in those areas.
The machine restart must only be enabled under safe conditions. The pushbutton for
enabling the restart of the machine must be installed in the following areas:
•outside of the dangerous area
•not accessible from the dangerous area
•in a point where the dangerous area is fully visible

3.1.7 Responsibility
The machine manufacturer and the installer of the system are responsible for the
following:
•Providing adequate integration of the system's outgoing signals (both safety and
auxiliary).
•Checking the monitored area of the system and validating it based on the needs
of the application and risk assessment. Following the instructions provided in this
manual.
3.1.8 Limits
•The system does not detect completely immobile persons who are not breathing or
immovable objects in the danger zone.
•The system does not offer protection from pieces ejected from the machinery,
from radiation, and objects falling from above.
•The machinery command must be electronically controlled.

3.2.3 UL
Only products bearing the UL Mark should be considered UL certified and included in
UL tracking services. Look for the UL certification mark on the product.

safeRS complies with FCC CFR title 47, part 15, subpart B. It contains FCC ID: UXS-
SMR-3X4. Operation is subject to the following two conditions:
•this device may not cause harmful interference, and
•this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may
cause undesired operation

4 Get to know safeRS
4.1 safeRS
4.1.1 Safety functions
safeRS is a radar system with active technical protection measures that monitors the
hazardous areas of a machine. It can fulfill two safety functions:
•Access detection: Puts the machine in a safe state if someone enters the haz‐
ardous area
•restart prevention function: it inhibits the machinery restart if there are people in
the dangerous area
4.1.2 Inputs and outputs
Thanks to its digital inputs and outputs, safeRS provides an automatic control system
that manages the primary safety functions of the machinery.
In addition to the safety outputs, the system also has two configurable auxiliary out‐
puts (failure, pre-alarm and muting function state) and three digital inputs (emergency
switching off button, restart enable pushbutton and muting function).
4.1.3 Special features
Some of the special features of this protection system are presented as follows:
•Insensitive to dust and smoke
•Reduction of faulty alarms caused by water or production waste
•pre-alarm area to signal proximity or prepare the machinery for stopping
•three configurable sensitivity levels
•Muting function for the entire system or only for some sensors
4.1.4 Main components
safeRS is composed of a controller and up to six sensors. The safeRS Designer applica‐
tion allows configuration and inspection of system functioning.

4.1.5 Controller - sensors communication
The sensors communicate with the controller via CAN bus using diagnostic mecha‐
nisms in compliance with standard EN 50325-5 to guarantee SIL 2 and PL d.
For proper operation, each sensor must be assigned an identifier (node ID). Two sen‐
sors on the same bus must have different IDs.
By default, the sensors have ID = 0, i.e. no node ID was assigned.
4.1.6 Application options
safeRS can be integrated into the machine’s control system: When the safety functions
are executed or failures are detected, safeRS releases the safety relays and keeps them
in the released state; the control system can command the area to be set to the safe
state and/or block the machine restart.
In the absence of other control systems, safeRS can be connected to the devices that
control the power supply or machinery start-up (e.g. external relays on the power supply
line).
safeRS does not execute any normal machine controller functions. Connection exam‐
ples see "Electrical connections", page 80.
4.2 safeRS control
4.2.1 Functions
The controller performs the following functions:
•Collects information from all the sensors via CAN bus.
•Compares the position of detected motion with the set stopping and pre-alarm
thresholds.
•De-energizes the safety output relays when at least one sensor detects motion in
the stopping area.
•It releases the relays of the safety outputs if it detects a failure at the sensor or at
the control unit.
•It manages the inputs and auxiliary outputs (description of the see "Auxiliary
outputs", page 20 and see "Digital inputs", page 21 functions).
•Communicates with the safeRS Designer for all configuration and diagnostic func‐
tions.
4.2.2 Structure

4.2.3 LED system state
The LEDs are each dedicated to a sensor, and can display the following statuses:

4.2.5 Safety outputs
The controller has one dual channel safety output realized with forced guided safety
relays for alarms and, direct or indirect, safety of the machinery.

The relay contacts are normally open. The statuses of the safety outputs are as follows:
