1 Preparation
Use the Vehicle Control Unit VCU only as intended in this manual. Any maintenance or re-
pair must be performed by authorized and qualified personnel approved by Bosch
Motorsport.
Operation of the Vehicle Control Unit VCU is only certified with the combinations and ac-
cessories that are specified in this manual. The use of variant combinations, accessories,
and other devices outside the scope of this manual are only permitted when they have
been determined to be compliant from a performance and safety standpoint by a repres-
entative from Bosch Motorsport.
Read the manual carefully and follow the application hints step by step. Do not hesitate to
contact us, contact data can be found on the last page of this document.

Please ensure that you have a good ground installation. That means:
– A ground that has a solid, low resistance connection to the negative battery terminal
– Connection should be free from dirt, grease, paint, anodizing, etc.
– Use large diameter wire
– More metal-to-metal contact is better!
The following notations for power signals are used:
– KL 15 is a switched battery rail controlled by the IGN-switch
– KL 30 is an unswitched battery positive rail (same as battery positive terminal)
– KL 31 is an unswitched ground rail (same as battery negative terminal)
Be careful to observe current limits of wires and connector pins!

The Vehicle Control Unit VCU is a highly powerful processing unit for customer-developed
functions integrating a flexible logging device with high speed logging capability of up to
200kHz.
The processing cores feature floating-point arithmetic and a high-end FPGA for ultimate
performance and flexibility. The customer software development process is based on
MATLAB/Simulink to significantly speed up algorithm development (automatic code and
documentation generation).
It offers real time Ethernet functionality to exchange e.g. data used in control algorithms
between devices (guaranteed latency time 1 ms).
This device comes with a basic software consisting of operating system, H/W-drivers and
low-level functions like pin setup, diagnostics, etc. The customer can freely develop his
own application software using the MATLAB/Simulink environment.

Upgrade Real Time Ethernet
Enables the VCU to operate as a real time Ethernet master or slave. Guaranteed latency
time of 1ms. Ideal for time critical data transfer as needed in online control algorithms
involving data from different devices.
Two interfaces allow for a ring topology (redundancy in case the RTE line experiences
damage).
The VCU features a reasonable set of SERCOS3 instructions although not the full SER-
COS3 standard is implemented. The ECU side can act as a SERCOS3 master; the logger
side can act as a SERCOS3 slave.
Upgrade CCP Master
Enables CCP master functionality to request data from foreign devices via CAN/CCP pro-
tocol.

6 Communication Channels
CAN bus
The Vehicle Control Unit VCU has two CAN buses configurable as input and output. Dif-
ferent baud rates are selectable. Please note that the Vehicle Control Unit VCU does not
contain any CAN termination resistors. Thus, the CAN termination resistors need to be in-
tegrated into the wiring loom.
Ethernet channels
The Vehicle Control Unit VCU has three 100 MBit full duplex Ethernet communication
ports. The ports are internally connected with an Ethernet switch. The Ethernet ports have
'cable auto crossover' functionality.
RS232 port
The Vehicle Control Unit VCU has one RS232 serial port dedicated to inbound GPS data.
Vehicle diagnosis connector
The Bosch Motorsport vehicle diagnosis connector is used as a standard interface to con-
nect the vehicle to a PC e.g. via a MSA-Box II. Loom connector: AS012-35SN

8 Starting Up
8.1 Before starting
Install the software required Vehicle Control Unit VCU operation. It is developed for Win-
dows system software. Following software versions are used in this manual:
– Vehicle Control Unit VCU setup, configuration and calibration: RaceCon
– Measurement data analysis: WinDarab
Set up the 100 Mbit Ethernet connection to the Vehicle Control Unit VCU.
– The Ethernet port has ‘cable auto crossover’ functionality
8.1.1 Setting up a new RaceCon Project
The following screenshot shows an overview of the RaceCon Main Screen with its areas.
All (sub-) windows are resizable and dockable. You can find them under the ‘Windows’
tab.

2. In the ‘File’ menu select ‘New project’ to create a new project.
Note: The Vehicle Control Unit VCU is represented in RaceCon by two symbols: VCU-
Logger and VCU-ECU.
3. Unlike other Bosch Motorsport devices, the Vehicle Control Unit VCU needs two dif-
ferent program archives – the Logger program archive and the ECU program archive.
For the Logger program archive, go to the Toolbox and select the Vehicle Control
Unit VCU. Drag it into the Main Area. A pop up window appears, to specify the
Vehicle Control Unit VCU Logger program archive.

4. In the next step, the ECU needs to be specified.
A pop up window appears, to specify the ECU program archive.
5. Download the firmware for the Vehicle Control Unit VCU from www.bosch-
motorsport.com.
An information shows if the archive is valid or not.
6. Click ‘Next’.
