1.2 Description of the Product and Hazards
The Söll GlideLoc fall arrester “Söll VR500” (hereafter “fall arrester”) is a component of
the fall protection system named Söll GlideLoc which is equipped with a fixed guide rail
designed to protect against fall from height. This fall protection system is certified in ac-
cordance with the norms EN 353-1:2014+A1:2017; TP TC 019/2011; ANSI-ASC A14.3-
2008; NBR 14627. The operating company of the fall arrest system has to suitably ensure
thatallusersaresuppliedwiththeirownfullbodyharnesscompliantwithstandardEN361;
ANSI Z359.1 – 2007; NBR 15836 and its own fall arrester and that they are used accord-
ing to the current instructions.

1.4 Compatibility
The fall arrester must be used only in conjunction with the original Söll fall arrest sys-
tems which have the Söll GlideLoc EU-type examination certificate. Using systems of
other manufacturers is strictly forbidden.
The selection and use of the Söll GlideLoc system should not be made without seeking ad-
vice from a person duly authorised by the manufacturer who will be able to help the user
select the appropriate equipment, to analyze the requirements of the correct installation,
and install the system components in a suitable configuration.
The fall arrester must only be used with full body harnesses compliant with standard
EN 361; ANSI Z359.1 – 2007; NBR 15836. Only fall arrest attachment elements certified
according EN 361; ANSI Z359.1 – 2007; NBR 15836 (marked with “A”) should be used.
1.5 Performances of the fall arrester
The maximum arrest force for a fall of a 100 kg weight will be 6kN.
Safety and compliance are essential in our day to day activities. To fulfil our mission, Söll
GlideLoc VR500 fall arrester has been tested to several user’s weight scenarios on dynamic
performance test. Resulting peak loads for several scenarios are pictured in table below:

1.6 Limitations and capabilities
Danger!
Failure to comply with these provisions will expose the user to risks of fall from height!
1.6.1 Capabilities
The fall arrester “Söll VR500” is categorized as class 3 PPE.
1.6.2 Limitations
The minimumuserweightis40 kg (88lbs).Themaximumuserweight(includingthecloth-
ing andequipment) maynotexceed140 kg(310lbs).
Operating temperature for the fall protection system: -40°C to +50°C
When not in use the ambient temperature must not exceed 100°C.
Only one person at a time (except in rescue operations) shall use the same portion of the
system between intermediate mountings.
The fall arrester is intended for one user only.
The fall arrester may not be used in explosion-prone areas.
The fall arrester must not be used for leisure activities.
The fall arrester must always be handled in such a manner that it will be protected from any
damage or corrosion.
1.7 WARNINGS
Before using this fall arrester, it is imperative that you read and understand this instruction
manual and any additional instructions provided during training or given with the related
system.
KEEP THIS MANUAL FOR FUTURE USE - DO NOT THROW AWAY!
Ask your employer to provide you with a user training before first use of this equipment.
You may also be directly supervised by a trainer and/or an authorised person.
Danger!
Failure to comply with these instructions may result in serious injury or death!
All users shall be provided with this instruction manual.
The operating company of the fall arrest system should ensure that this instruction manual
is either kept in a safe and dry location near the system or is always kept in an easily acces-
sible location that is known to all system users.

1.8 Where applicable, attention must be paid to the regulations for using personal protec-
tive equipment against falls from a height, i.e. DGUV Regel 112-198, of the Institute
for statutory accident insurance and prevention as well as the rules for using personal
protective equipment for holding and rescuing, i.e. DGUV Regel 112-199
1.9 For the users’ safety, it is important that the approved distributor provides this manual
in the respective country’s language if this system is to be re-sold in another country.

2 PRE-USE INFORMATION
2.1 Storage and Transportation
Storage/transportation temperature must be between -50°C and +50°C.
The fall arrester must be kept clean, dry and dust free. It should not be stored near heat
sources. No sun exposure during storage/transportation.
Ensure that the fall arrester is protected from damage during storage/transportation.
2.2 Inspection before use
2.2.1 Before each usage, the whole fall arrester including the carabiner hook should be checked
for correct functioning. (See the inspection checklist 5.4)
2.2.2 The complete fall arrest system has to be checked in addition.
2.2.3 The complete fall arrest system has to be checked in addition. After release the locking pin
of the end stops must lock automatically in the initial position..
2.2.4 Before each use it is necessary to check that all components of the fall arrester are
moving freely, especially the safety catch, the shock absorber must not be deformed.
To check, lift the catch nose to reveal the fall indication arrows (see Fig. 9 detail 2.2). Fall
indication arrows must be aligned and pointing to each other.
2.2.5 The fall arrester must not be used if there are any visible defects or doubts concerning safe-
ty. If this is the case, do not use it until an authorised person or body (as defined in section
4.3) approves it for further use. Send the fall arrester back to the manufacturer if required.
2.2.6 Users need to be in a good and healthy condition and physically fit. It is prohibited to climb
if users are influenced by drugs, alcohol or medicine.
2.3 Installation mandatory pre-requisites and pre-use
recommendations

Failure to comply with the instructions of this section may result in serious injury or death!
The fall arrester should be used in combination with the elements of the Söll GlideLoc sys-
tem as described in the above section “compatibilities”.
Note:
It is necessary to be extremely careful at the bottom of the fall arrest system. Within the first
2m of the climbing path special attention during ascending and descending is required
because it may not be possible to prevent the user from hitting the ground. (Fall arrest dis-
tance plus body height of the user is approximately 2 meters)
A vertical safety distance of at least 4,5m between the 2 users or the ground is mandatory
(see Fig. 1).

2.4 Warning
The fall arrest system and the full body harness secure the users against falling while as-
cending or descending. When working in or next to the climbing path and when executing
tasks and actions that are not part of the usual ascent and descent movements, the climber
mustotherwise secure himself (the useralonetakestheriskandliabilityfordamagesresult-
ing out of this). In order to do so the user needs to use a separate fall arrest system (e.g. EN
355 “shock absorbing lanyards“) or a work positioning lanyard compliant with the EN 358
“restraint and work positioning lanyards“ (or lanyard and work positioning lanyard compli-
ant with the ANSI Z359.1-2007; NBR 15835) in combination with a back-up system (e.g.
EN 355 “shock absorbing lanyards“, see Fig. 2)
The choice of such lanyard must be done in consideration of the type of work and
sub-structure and if needed in agreement with an expert. For lanyard only, suitable anchor
points compliant with EN 795 must be used. This anchor point should be above user’s head
(proximately 1m above) and lanyard should be held tight and properly fixed (hook closed)
in order to prevent a fall.

3 USE INFORMATION
3.1 Insert the fall arrester into the lower end of the Söll GlideLoc system guide rail (Fig. 3) or in
the recess (Fig. 4) (that should always be positioned at chest height or lower). The laterally
protruding safety pin (Pos. 1) must be on the right side and the engraved arrow must point
upwards.
The safety pin (Pos.1) together with the end stop (Pos.2) prevent the incorrect use of
the fall arrester and unintended slipping from the guide rail.
Warning:
Sliding the fall arrester beyond the end stops is allowed only
• In the areas without the risk of a fall from heights or
• If the fall protection is ensured otherwise.
The self-locking carabiner must be connected to the chest attachment point of the harness
marked with “A”. (see Fig. 5)
In order to open the carabiners, the following steps are necessary: Pull the gate backwards,
turn it to the right and press it inwards.
Warning: Risk of life!
The carabiner of the fall arrester should be directly connected to the front chest at-
tachment point (marked with “A”) of the full body harness for vertical usage in compli-
ance with EN 361; ANSI Z359.1-2007; NBR 15836 standard.
The length of the connecting element must not be extended or shortened.
Note:
It is absolutely prohibited to use carabiners of another type than the original ones
provided!
The distance between the outer edge of the guide rail and the internally bent eyelet / loops
on the harness must not exceed 180 mm (see Fig. 6).
The full body harness should fit well and tightly to the body!
If the harness should become loose during climbing, take time and readjust it.
During readjusting of the harness users should be in a safe position and secured with
a lanyard as specified in 2.4. For more information, please refer to the user manual of
the harness and/or lanyard.
3.2 After inserting the fall arrester and attaching to sternal attachment point of full body
harness, the system is ready for use. For ascending climb the ladder normally. Try to keep
your arms as outstretched as possible in order to fight fatigue by making your legs work
which are more powerful. To start descending, pull back on the shuttle with your harness
using your body weight (your arms should be outstretched), and maintain this pulling force
throughout the descent to make the catching nose enter the shuttle. In the event the shut-

tle locks, ascent 3 bars, and/or manually lift the shuttle's carabiner to unlock it (see Fig. 7).
Then continue your descent to the ground, still pulling on the shuttle.
3.3 Removing the fall arrester from the guide rail
Warning
Before removing the fall arrester from the guide rail or detaching from the harness, users
must be secured and protected against a fall from height otherwise!
In order to remove the fall arrester from the guide rail, the end stop should be opened so the
fall arrester can cross this section.
If other accessories (e.g. exit section) are mounted at the guide rail or ladder, please follow
the respective manual.
After use, the fall arrester must not be left attached to the fall protection ladder/guide rail.
3.4 Foreseeable misuse warning:
Any alterations or additions to the fall arrester “Söll VR500” without the manufacturer’s
written approval may prevent the fall arrester from properly functioning and are therefore
prohibited.
The non-use of the front chest attachment point of harness marked with “A” may result
in serious injury or death.
Hand free ascending/descending is not allowed.
3.5 Emergency procedures
It is essential that the operator of the fall protection system has a rescue plan, wherein all
possible emergencies, in particular the urgent need to evacuate an injured person, are con-
sidered.

4 INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE
4.1 Should a fall occur on the fall arrester, it must be inspected by an authorised person or body
before it is used again.
Never use such a fall arrester without the written approval from an authorised person or
body.
4.2 The fall arrester and the respective manual should be sent to the manufacturer's workshop
for inspection and maintenance.
4.3 An authorised person or body should regularly check the fall arrester to confirm that it is in
a good condition and ready for use. Such inspection shall be carried out at least once a
year or more frequently depending on the application and operational conditions. Regu-
lar inspections are mandatory as safety of the user depends on continued functionality
and durability of the fall arrester and the fall arrest system.
In order to do this the “inspection checklist” (see 5.4) should be followed.
In order to track the periodic inspection, a record (e.g. in a logbook) should be kept for
each component, subsystem and system including all the relevant details concerning the
equipment. This record should include information for product identification, including se-
rial number and manufacturing date, date when the product was first put into use, and a
complete maintenance history with repair details.
Failuretocarry out the above inspections and maintenance will impair the functionality and
the durability of the fall arrester and therefore endanger the safety of the user.
Regular inspections or repairs have to be recorded in inspection logbook which should be
part of the product package.
Warning!
Inspections may only be carried out by the manufacturer or by its authorized person or
body. The authorization can be acquired through a training and regular refreshers by
the manufacturer. The hereby received certificate is valid for 3 years and authorizes to
conduct regular inspections of Söll systems:
Warning!
An authorization for inspections does not include an authorization to carry out repairs.
4.4 Maintenance
An authorised person or body can deal with following defects:
• Removing dirt (concrete, mortar, paint, etc.) from the fall arrester
• Cleaning the marking
In case of dirt inside the fall arrester or if the fall arrester has any defects, which require
disassembly, it should be returned to the manufacturer or an authorized partner (together
with the respective manual) for cleaning and repair. This process should be recorded in the
annex of the checklist (space for comments).
