1. Safety Regulations
1.1. Correct Use
The BD mini (herenafter referred to as compressed air breathing apparatus) is
a self-contained breathing apparatus operating independent of the ambient air.
Breathable air is supplied to the user from a compressed air cylinder via a
pressure reducer, a demand controlled dosage assembly (see Instruction Manual
for Lung Governed Demand Valve) and a breathing connection (see Instruction
Manual for Face piece). The exhalation air is released directly into the ambient
atmosphere.
It is imperative that this operating manual be read and observed when using the
compressed air breathing apparatus. In particular, the safety instructions, as well
as the information for the use and operation of the apparatus, must be carefully
read and observed. Furthermore, the national regulations applicable in the user's
country must be taken into account for a safe use.
Alternative use, or use outside this specification will be considered as non-
compliance. This also applies especially to unauthorised alterations to the
apparatus and to commissioning work that has not been carried out by MSA or
authorised persons.
Danger!
This product is supporting life and health. Inappropriate use,
maintenance or servicing may affect the function of the device and
thereby seriously compromise the user’s life.
Before use the product operability must be verified. The product must
not be used if the function test is unsuccessful, it is damaged,
a competent servicing/maintenance has not been made, genuine MSA
spare parts have not been used.
Danger!
This compressed air breathing apparatus is a pure gas protection
device. It is not suitable for underwater diving.
1.2. Liability Information
MSA accepts no liability in cases where the product has been used
inappropriately or not as intended. The selection and use of the product are the
exclusive responsibility of the individual operator.
Product liability claims, warranties also as guarantees made by MSA with respect
to the product are voided, if it is not used, serviced or maintained in accordance
with the instructions in this manual.

The carrying frame consists of a plastic plate with hip and shoulder straps. The
arrangement of the carrying frame allows many individual carrying methods.
In the lower section of the carrying framework, there are slots for the variable
fitting of the pressure reducer, which are matched to the method of transportation.
The upper part of the plate has an integrated cylinder support.
The compressed air breathing apparatus can accommodate compressed air
cylinders with a diameter between 90 mm and about 160 mm. Only one cylinder
can be carried.
The cylinder strap is freely adjustable. After inserting the compressed air cylinder,
it is tied down tightly and secured with the tension clamp.
The carrying belts and the hip belt are adjustable in length.

The pressure reducer is mounted in the lower area of the carrying plate
(see Fig. 2). On this you will find the safety valve, a warning device (signal
whistle), the medium pressure line and the pressure gauge line, on the end of
which the pressure gauge is connected. The pressure reducer reduces the
cylinder pressure to approx. 7 bar.
The safety valve activates with non-permitted pressure rise (at about 11 bar) to
prevent damage and to assure the supply of breathable air.
The warning device triggers a continuous warning signal when the cylinder
pressure drops below 105±5 bar (set in the factory).

The pressure gauge (see Fig. 3) is connected to the end of the pressure gauge
line.
The medium pressure line ends in the medium pressure coupling onto which the
lung governed demand valve is connected.

Using a medium pressure Y-piece, which is blocked in one direction, you can
connect the compressed air breathing apparatus to a compressed air hose unit
(e.g. a ring main), without having to interrupt the breathing
Before use, connect the Y-piece between the pressure reducer and the lung
governed demand valve.
The medium pressure of the external air supply should be greater than
medium pressure of the compressed air breathing apparatus.
This prevents inadvertent air removal from the compressed air
breathing apparatus.
If required, you can close the cylinder valve of the compressed air
cylinder.
Warning!
If the external air supply fails and the cylinder valve is closed there is
a danger that you will no longer be supplied with breathing air.
In this event, immediately open the cylinder valve on the compressed
air cylinder.
2.3. Basic unit BD mini with automatic switching valve ASV
Instead of the Y-piece, you can connect the compressed air breathing apparatus
to a compressed air hose unit (e.g. a ring main) using an automatic switching
valve, without having to interrupt the breathing.
Before use, connect the Y-piece between the pressure reducer and the lung
governed demand valve. The switching valve switches automatically to the
external air supply if the medium pressure is sufficient in the external supply.
If the minimum pressure falls below a certain level, it switches back to the
compressed air breathing apparatus without interrupting the flow of air.
When breathing from the compressed air breathing apparatus,
a warning signal is emitted by the switching valve which indicates
consumption from breathing air being carried with the user.
The function of the warning signal on the pressure reducer is not
affected by this.
Further information concerning the handling of the switching valve and the
compressed air hose unit can be obtained from the relevant operating
instructions.

Warning!
The compressed air breathing apparatus may only be put into use in
a fully maintained and tested condition. If malfunctions or defects are
noticed prior to use, do not use the compressed air breathing apparatus
under any circumstances.
Get the apparatus checked and repaired by an authorised service
centre.
3.1. Mounting possibilities of the pressure reducer
The pressure reducer can be mounted in various positions on the carrying plate in
the slots provided depending upon the method of carrying being employed for the
compressed air breathing apparatus.

In order to mount the pressure reducer in accordance with the individual carrying
method of the compressed air breathing device, you must first remove it from the
carrying plate, then insert it into the required slot and then mount.
The de-mounting is to be carried out as follows:
(1) Unscrew the Allen screw and pull out of the retaining bracket and spacer.
(2) Remove the pressure reducer.
(3) Remove the spacer.
(4) Pull the retaining bracket out of the slots towards the back.
(5) Insert the retaining bracket from the back into the slot required and mount
the pressure reducer in reverse sequence.

Mounting in Slots A
Mount the pressure reducer in the slots Aas follows:
▪MSA -plate points upwards
▪The hoses point to the left
This is the preferred position for back carrying method in
accordance with Section 3.2.1 for compressed air cylinders
of larger diameter.
Mounting in Slots B
Mount the pressure reducer in the slots Bas follows:
▪Warning device points upwards.
▪The hoses point downwards
This is the preferred position for back and hip carrying
method in accordance with Sections 3.2.3 and 3.2.5 to 3.2.8
with slim compressed air cylinders.
Mounting in Slots C
Mount the pressure reducer in the slots Cas follows:
▪MSA -plate points downwards
▪The hoses point to the right
This is the preferred position for back carrying method in
accordance with Sections 3.2.2 and 3.2.4.
Mounting in Slots D
Mount the pressure reducer in the slots Das follows:
▪The hoses point upwards
▪Warning device points downwards
This is the preferred position for slim compressed air
cylinders.
3.2. Carrying Possibilities of the Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus
The compressed air cylinders can be carried on different areas of the body,
depending upon the method of fitting of the pressure reducer and the way in
which the belts are used. The carrying possibilities are shown with a
2l-Composite-Cylinder.
For the carrying methods described below, the hip belt is fitted as shown in
Section 3.3.1.
The compressed air breathing apparatus can be combined with all
compressed air cylinders shown in Section 6.

3.2.1. Back Carrying Method 1
▪The compressed air breathing apparatus in
as-delivered state as per Fig. 1.
▪Cylinder vertical, pressure reducer on the right side of
the carrying plate.
▪Shoulder straps left and right.
▪Hoses on the right hand side.
This carrying method is recommended for
large diameter cylinders.
3.2.2. Back Carrying Method 2
▪Cylinder vertical, pressure reducer in the middle
towards the top of the carrying plate.
▪Shoulder straps left and right.
▪Hoses on the left hand side.
This carrying method is recommended for
large diameter cylinders.
3.2.3. Back Carrying Method 3
▪Cylinder diagonal.

3.3. Fitting and Changing the Straps and Belts
The compressed air breathing apparatus is supplied ex-works as shown in Fig. 1.
Depending upon the desired method of carrying, the straps and belts of the
compressed air breathing apparatus must be set up accordingly.
The carrying and hip belts of the compressed air breathing apparatus
are fastened in the carrying plate with metal buckles. To remove the
belts, you must pull up the buckles slightly, tilt them and push them out
of the slots in the carrying plate.
Fit the belts and straps in accordance with your requirements, as described in
Sections 3.3.1 – 3.3.5.
The shoulder straps consist of sections of different lengths. In the rest o
f
this document, the expression "carrying strap long" is used for the
longer section of strap, whilst "carrying strap short" is used to denote
the shorter section.
The following illustration shows the carrying plate with the slots which can be
used for the fitting of the straps and belts.

In the rest of this document, the designation of the slots for the fitting of
the straps and belts refers to the illustrations in Fig. 5 and Fig. 6.
3.3.1. Back Carrying method with Vertical Cylinder
The compressed air breathing apparatus is supplied ex-works as shown in Fig. 1.
The method of carrying is as shown in Sections 3.2.1 and 3.2.2.
(1) First carrying strap "long" from the front through the slot G3 and button in
from the back into G2 .
(2) Second carrying strap "long" from the front through the slot G4 and button in
from the back into G1 .
Make sure that the carrying straps are on the carrying plate under the
cylinder retaining strap.

(3) Button the hip belts with the slides J into the slots E in such a way that the
slots Hpoint upwards.
(4) Pull the "short" carrying straps through the belt loops (see Fig. 1) of the hip
belt.
▪The metal slide and the Z-seam holds the belt assembly.
(5) Push the pressure gauge line and the medium pressure line through the
strap Land fix in place with hose retainer on the shoulder strap.
3.3.2. Back Carrying method with Inclined Cylinder
The compressed air breathing apparatus is supplied ex-works as shown in Fig. 1.
The method of carrying is as shown in Sections 3.2.3 and 3.2.4. The carrying
straps "long" and "short" are not required and are designated as the shoulder
strap.
(1) Button the hip belts with the slides Jinto the slots F
in such a way that the slots Hpoint downwards.
(2) Push the strap Lthrough G4 and secure with slide K
(see illustration).
3.3.3. Hip Carrying Method Front/Back
The method of carrying is as shown in Sections 3.2.5 and 3.2.2.
(1) Button the hip belts with the slides Jinto the slots E in such a way that the
slots Hpoint upwards.
(2) Button a shoulder strap into the slots G1 and G2.
(3) Pressure gauge line and medium pressure line to be fixed as required with
strap Lon the slide K.
3.3.4. Hip Carrying Method Side
The method of carrying is in accordance with the illustration in Section 3.2.6.
(1) Mount the hip belt with the slides Jand Kas described in Section 3.3.1.
3.3.5. Shoulder Carrying Method
The method of carrying is in accordance with the illustration in Section 3.2.6.
(1) Button just one shoulder strap into the slots G1 and G2.

3.4. Connecting the Compressed Air Cylinder
The cylinder retaining strap is fixed in the slots H.
(1) Release the retaining clamp of the cylinder strap
and use the safety knobs to raise to the vertical
position.
(2) Loosen tension strap to correspond to the cylinder
size to be used.
(3) Check gasket on pressure reducer and cylinder
valve for proper condition.
(4) Push the compressed air cylinder into the cylinder
retainer.
(5) Screw cylinder valve onto pressure reducer, if
necessary, bring the compressed air breathing
apparatus with valve up into a vertical position.
When tightening the fitting, the last 1 ½
turns activate the vibration lock.
(6) Turn the clamp into the horizontal clamping
position.
(7) Tension the cylinder retaining strap by pulling the
loose end.
Only tension the cylinder retaining strap
when the clamp is in the tensioning
position, since otherwise it may not be
possible to turn it over completely.
(8) Lay the compressed air breathing apparatus down
flat and hinge the clamp downwards until it clicks
in position.
(9) Fasten end of the cylinder retaining strap onto
Velcro strip.
(10) Check the secure location of the cylinder. If
required, correct the setting of the cylinder
retaining strap.
(11) Briefly open cylinder valve and check for escaping
air, retighten if necessary.

3.5. Function of the Medium Pressure Coupling
Coupling
(1) Connect medium pressure line of lung governed demand valve until the
coupling audibly catches.
De-coupling
(1) Push the push-in nipple of the medium pressure hose into the coupling and
simultaneously pull back the coupling sleeve.
(2) Pull out the medium pressure hose from the coupling.
3.6. Condensed Prior to Use Check
Check can only be performed with connected lung governed demand
valve
(1) Open the cylinder valve and check the pressure on the combo pressure
gauge.
▪The pressure values must read:

(2) Close cylinder valve and observe pressure gauge.
▪The pressure must not drop more than 10 bar in 60 s.
(3) Carefully activate flushing mode of lung governed demand valve, closing exit
port as much as possible.
(4) Observe the pressure gauge.
▪The warning signal must sound at the set pressure (factory pre-set is
1055 bar).
3.7. Donning the Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus
(Back Carrying Method)
(1) Check all components of the compressed air breathing apparatus for defects
and malfunctions.
(2) Don breathing apparatus with shoulder straps fully extended.
(3) Tighten shoulder straps till carrying plate fits comfortably
(4) Close hip belt and tighten by pulling the loose ends.
▪The release button must point towards the body.
(5) Adjust shoulder straps to achieve a comfortable weight distribution between
shoulder straps and hip belt.
(6) If required, connect lung governed demand valve to medium pressure
coupling (see Instruction Manual for Lung Governed Demand Valve).

3.8. Donning the Facepiece (Full Face Mask)
(1) Don facepiece (full face mask) and check facepiece-to-face fit (palm test)
(see Instruction Manual of Full Face Mask).
(2) Open cylinder valve fully.
(3) Connect lung governed demand valve to full face mask
(see Instruction Manual for Lung Governed Demand Valve)
(4) The compressed air breathing apparatus is ready for use.
3.9. During Use
(1) Regularly check tight fit of full face mask and lung governed demand valve
and retighten if necessary, as well as the air supply on the pressure gauge.
(2) Leave area immediately if the warning signal sounds.
Independent from the warning signal, an earlier retreat may be required;
the retreat start is based on the reading of the pressure gauge.
Danger!
The warning signal sounds when the air supply in the compressed air
cylinders is reduced.
In such cases, immediately leave the area, there is danger of air
deficiency.
3.10. Removing the Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus
(1) Remove lung governed demand valve, or full face mask.
(2) Close cylinder valve.
(3) Activate flushing mode of lung governed demand valve, releasing all air
pressure.
(4) Open hip belt.
(5) Extend shoulder straps by lifting the slides.
Danger!
Do not throw off compressed air breathing apparatus. This could
damage the valve and the remaining compressed air could escape
suddenly.
This could cause fatal injury to you or to any bystanders.
(6) Remove compressed air breathing apparatus.

3.11. Removing the Compressed Air Cylinder

(1) Place the compressed air breathing apparatus in a horizontal position with
the cylinder facing up.
(2) Hinge up tension clamp at cylinder strap and thus loosen the strap.
(3) Unscrew the cylinder valve from the pressure reducer.
Warning!
Do not remove or transport the compressed air cylinder from the
cylinder strap by the handwheel.
This could accidentally open the cylinder valve.
(4) Lift compressed air cylinder at valve and pull out of cylinder strap.
(5) Close high pressure connection and cylinder valve with a protective cap.

4. Maintenance and Care of the SCBA
4.1. Maintenance Instructions
This product should be regularly checked and serviced by specialists. Inspection
and service records must be maintained. Always use original parts from MSA.
Repairs and maintenance must be carried out only by authorised service centres
or by MSA. Changes to devices or components are not permitted and could result
in loss of approved status.
MSA is liable only for maintenance and repairs carried out by MSA.
Do not use organic solvents like alcohol, white spirit, petrol, etc.
When drying/washing, do not exceed the maximum permissible temperature of
60°C.
4.2. Maintenance Intervals
MSA recommends the following maintenance intervals. If needed and
by considering the usage, tasks may be at even shorter intervals than
indicated.
Observe national laws and regulations!
If in any doubt, ask your local MSA contact person.

1) For SCBA apparatus that are frequently used, we recommend a complete overhaul after
approx. 540 hours. For example, this corresponds to 1080 applications with a duration of 30 minutes.
2) The checks are performed with the respective lung governed demand valves and if required, with the
respective full face masks.
3) Rubber components are subject to ageing with varying rates and according to local conditions and
must be checked and replaced at regular intervals.

4.3. Cleaning
Pre-cleaning
(1) Open the cylinder valve of the mounted compressed air cylinder.
(2) Remove rough dirt from breathing apparatus with water hose. Here, we
recommend using a mild detergent.
(3) Close the cylinder valve, release the air from appartus with lung governed
demand valve.
Cleaning, light soiling
(1) Remove compressed air cylinder (see Section 3.11).
(2) Clean compressed air breathing apparatus manually using a brush, damp
cloth or similar.
(3) Dry apparatus completely in a drying cabinet at max. 60°C
Cleaning, heavy soiling
(1) Remove compressed air cylinder (see Section 3.11).
(2) Release the hose retainer and remove the medium pressure line and the
pressure gauge line from the shoulder strap.
The carrying and hip belts of the compressed air breathing apparatus
are fastened in the carrying plate with metal buckles. To remove the
belts, you must pull up the buckles slightly, tilt them and push them out
of the slots in the carrying plate.
(3) Remove shoulder and hip belts from the slots on the carrying plate.
(4) Unscrew hexagon socket screw (1) of the pressure reducer bracket
(see Fig. 8).
(5) Remove the pressure reducer with hoses from the carrying plate.
