SafeOperatingPractices
Important:Important:Themachineisdesigned
primarilyasanoff-roadvehicleandisnotintended
forextensiveuseonpublicroads.Whenusing
themachineonpublicroads,followalltrafc
regulationsanduseanyadditionalaccessories
thatmayberequiredbylaw,suchaslights,turn
signals,slow-moving-vehicle(SMV)sign,and
othersasrequired.
TheMultiPro®5800TurfSprayerwasdesigned
andtestedtooffersafeservicewhenoperatedand
maintainedproperly.Althoughhazardcontroland
accidentpreventionpartiallyaredependentuponthe
designandcongurationofthemachine,thesefactors
arealsodependentupontheawareness,concern,
andpropertrainingofthepersonnelinvolvedinthe
operation,maintenanceandstorageofthemachine.
Improperuseormaintenanceofthemachinecan
resultininjuryordeath.

TurfSprayerarenotcoveredinthismanual.Seethe
specicoperator’smanualorinstallationinstructions
providedwitheachattachmentforadditionalsafety
instructions.Readthesemanuals.

thefollowingsafetyinstructions:
Supervisor'sResponsibilities
•Makesurethatoperatorsarethoroughlytrained
andfamiliarwiththeOperator'sManual,engine
owner’smanual,andalllabelsonthesprayer.
•Establishyourownspecialproceduresandwork
rulesforunusualoperatingconditions(e.g.,slopes
toosteepforsprayeroperation).
Training
•ReadtheOperator'sManualandothertraining
materialbeforeoperatingthemachine.
Note:Iftheoperator(s)ormechanic(s)cannot
readthemanuallanguage,itistheowner's
responsibilitytoexplainthismaterialtothem.
•Becomefamiliarwiththesafeoperationofthe
equipment,operatorcontrols,andsafetysigns.
•Alloperatorsandmechanicsshouldbetrained.
Theownerisresponsiblefortrainingtheusers.
•Neverallowuntrainedpeopletooperateorservice
theequipment.

BeforeOperating
•Operatethemachineonlyafterreadingand
understandingthecontentsofthismanual.
•Neverallowchildrentooperatethesprayer.
•Makesurethatalloperatorsarephysicallycapable
ofoperatingthesprayer.
•Thissprayerisdesignedtocarrytheoperator
and1passengerintheseatprovidedbythe
manufacturer.Nevercarryanyadditional
passengersonthesprayer.
•Neveroperatethesprayerwhenill,tired,orunder
theinuenceofdrugsoralcohol.
•Becomefamiliarwiththecontrolsandknowhow
toshutofftheenginequickly.
•Keepallshields,safetydevices,anddecals
inplace.Ifashield,safetydevice,ordecalis
malfunctioning,illegible,ordamaged,repairor
replaceitbeforeoperatingthemachine.
•Wearappropriateclothingincludingsafetyglasses,
longpants,substantialslip-resistantfootwear,
gloves,andhearingprotection.Donotwearloose
ttingclothing.Donotwearjewelry.Tieback
longhair.SeeChemicalSafety(page5)forPPE
requirements.

Wearhearingprotectionwhenoperating

•Operateonlyindaylightorgoodarticiallight.
•Neverspraywhilepeople,especiallychildrenor
petsarenearby.
•Beforeoperatingthesprayer,alwayscheckthe
designatedareasofthesprayerthatarestatedin

PerformingPre-StartingChecks(page24).Ifthe
machinedoesnotfunctioncorrectlyorisdamaged
inanyway,donotusethesprayer.Makesure
thattheproblemiscorrectedbeforethesprayeror
attachmentisoperated.
•Makesurethattheoperatorandpassengerareas
arecleanandfreefromchemicalresidueand
debrisbuildup.
•Ensurethatalluid-lineconnectorsaretightand
allhosesareingoodconditionbeforeapplying
pressuretothesystem.
Note:Donotusethesprayerifitisleakingor
damaged.
ChemicalSafety
WARNING
Chemicalsubstancesusedinthe
spreader-sprayersystemmaybehazardous
andtoxictoyou,bystanders,animals,plants,
soilsorotherproperty.
•Carefullyreadandfollowthechemical
warninglabelsandmaterialsafetydata
sheets(MSDS)forallchemicalsusedand
protectyourselfaccordingtothechemical
manufacturer'srecommendations.Ensure
thataslittleskinaspossibleisexposed
whileusingchemicals.Useappropriate
personalprotectiveequipment(PPE)
toguardagainstpersonalcontactwith
chemicals,suchasthefollowing:
–safetyglasses,goggles,and/orface
shield
–respiratororltermask
–chemicalresistantgloves
–rubberbootsorothersubstantial
footwear
–hearingprotection
–keeponhandacleanchangeofclothes,
soap,anddisposabletowelsinthe
eventofachemicalspill.
•Keepinmindthattheremaybemorethan
1chemicalused,andinformationoneach
chemicalshouldbeassessed.
•Refusetooperateorworkonthesprayerif
thisinformationisnotavailable.
•Beforeworkingonasprayersystem,
makesurethatthesystemhasbeen
triplerinsedandneutralizedaccording
totherecommendationsofthechemical
manufacturer(s)andallthevalveshave
beencycled3times.
•Verifythereisanadequatesupplyofclean
waterandsoapnearby,andimmediately
washoffanychemicalsthatcontactyou.
•Obtainpropertrainingbeforeusingorhandling
chemicals.
•Usethecorrectchemicalforthejob.
•Followthechemicalmanufacturer'sinstructionsfor
thesafeapplicationofthechemical.Donotexceed
recommendedsystemapplicationpressure.
•Donotll,calibrate,orcleantheunitwhenpeople,
especiallychildren,orpetsareinthearea.

•Handlechemicalsinawell-ventilatedarea.
•Havecleanwateravailableespeciallywhenlling
thespraytank.
•Donoteat,drink,orsmokewhileworkingwith
chemicals.
•Donotcleanspraynozzlesbyblowingthrough
themorplacinginmouth.
•Alwayswashyourhandsandotherexposedareas
assoonaspossibleafteryounishworkingwith
chemicals.
•Keepchemicalsintheiroriginalpackagesand
storedinasafelocation.
•Properlydisposeofunusedchemicalsand
chemicalcontainersasinstructedbythechemical
manufacturerandyourlocalcodes.
•Chemicalsandfumesaredangerous;neverenter
thetankorplaceyourheadoverorintheopening
ofatank.
•Followalllocal,state,federalregulationsfor
spreadingorsprayingchemicals.
WhileOperating
WARNING
Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,
whichisanodorless,deadlypoisonthatcan
killyou.
Donotruntheengineindoorsorinan
enclosedarea.
•Theoperator(andpassenger)shouldremain
seatedwheneverthesprayerisinmotion.The
operatorshouldkeepbothhandsonthesteering
wheelwheneverpossible.Keepyourarmsand
legswithinthesprayerbodyatalltimes.
•Failuretooperatethesprayersafelymayresultin
anaccident,tipoverofthesprayer,andserious
injuryordeath.Drivecarefully.Topreventtipping
orlossofcontrol:
–Useextremecaution,reducespeed,and
maintainasafedistancearoundsandtraps,
ditches,creeks,ramps,unfamiliarareas,or
anyareasthathaveabruptchangesinground
conditionsorelevation.
–Watchforholesorotherhiddenhazards.
–Useextracautionwhenoperatingthesprayer
onwetsurfaces,inadverseweatherconditions,
athigherspeeds,orwithafullload.Stopping
timeanddistanceincreaseswithafullload.
–Avoidsuddenstopsandstarts.Donotgo
fromreversetoforwardorforwardtoreverse
withoutrstcomingtoacompletestop.
–Slowdownbeforeturning.Donotattempt
sharpturnsorabruptmaneuversorother
unsafedrivingactionsthatmaycausealoss
ofsprayercontrol.
–Beforebackingup,looktotherearandensure
thatnooneisbehindyou.Backupslowly.
–Watchoutfortrafcwhenyouarenearor
crossingroads.Alwaysyieldtherightofwayto
pedestriansandothervehicles.Thissprayer
isnotdesignedforuseonstreetsorhighways.
Alwayssignalyourturnsorstopearlyenough
sothatotherpeopleknowwhatyouplantodo.
Obeyalltrafcrulesandregulations.
–Theelectricalandexhaustsystemsofthe
sprayercanproducesparkscapableofigniting
explosivematerials.Neveroperatethesprayer
inornearanareawherethereisdustorfumes
intheairwhichareexplosive.
–Ifyouareeverunsureaboutsafeoperation,
stopworkandaskyoursupervisor.
•Donottouchtheengineormuferwhiletheengine
isrunningorsoonafterithasstopped.These
areasmaybehotenoughtocauseburns.
•Ifthemachineevervibratesabnormally,stop
immediately,waitforallmotiontostop,andinspect
thesprayerfordamage.Repairalldamagebefore
resumingoperation.
•Beforegettingofftheseat,dothefollowing:
1.Stopthemachine.
2.Removeyourfootfromthetractionpedal
andsettheparkingbrake.
3.Shutofftheenginebyrotatingthekeyforthe
starterswitchtotheOFFposition.
4.Removethekeyfromthestarterswitch.
Important:Donotparkthemachineon
anincline.
•Lightningcancausesevereinjuryordeath.If
lightningisseenorthunderisheardinthearea,do
notoperatethemachine;seekshelter.
Braking
•Slowdownbeforeyouapproachanobstacle.
Thisgivesyouextratimetostoporturnaway.
Hittinganobstaclecandamagethesprayerand
itscontents.Moreimportant,itcaninjureyou.
•GrossVehicleWeight(GVW)hasamajorimpact
onyourabilitytostopand/orturn.Heavyloadsand
attachmentsmakeasprayerhardertostoporturn.
Theheaviertheload,thelongerittakestostop.
•Turfandpavementaremuchmoreslipperywhen
theyarewet.Itcantake2to4timesaslongto
stoponwetsurfacesasondrysurfaces.Ifyou
drivethroughstandingwaterdeepenoughtoget

thebrakeswet,theywillnotworkwelluntiltheyare
dry.Afterdrivingthroughwater,youshouldtest
thebrakestomakesurethattheyworkproperly.
Iftheydonot,driveslowlywhileputtinglight
pressureonthebrakepedaltodrythebrakes.
ROPSSafety
Note:ForeachmachinecoveredinthisOperator’s
Manual,acabinstalledbyToroisaROPS.
•DonotremovetheROPSfromthemachine.
•Fastentheseatbeltandensurethatyoucan
releaseitquicklyinanemergency.Alwayswear
yourseatbeltwhentherollbarisuporona
machinewithacabinstalledbyToro.
•Checkcarefullyforoverheadobstructionsanddo
notcontactthem.
•KeeptheROPSinsafeoperatingconditionby
thoroughlyinspectingitperiodicallyfordamage
andkeepingallthemountingfastenerstight.
•ReplaceanydamagedROPScomponent.Donot
repairoralterit.
OperatingonHillsandRough
Terrain
Operatingthesprayeronahillmaycausetippingor
rollingofthesprayer,ortheenginemaystallandyou
couldloseheadwayonthehill.Thiscouldresultin
personalinjury.
•Donotacceleratequicklyorsuddenlyapplythe
brakeswhenbackingdownahill,especiallywitha
load.
•Neverdriveacrossasteephill;alwaysdrive
straightupordownorgoaroundthehill.
•Iftheenginestallsoryoubegintoloseheadway
whileclimbingahill,graduallyapplythebrakes
andslowlybackstraightdownthehill.
•Turningwhiletravelingupordownhillscanbe
dangerous.Ifyouhavetoturnwhileonahill,doit
slowlyandcautiously.Nevermakesharporfast
turns.
•Heavyloadsaffectstability.Reducetheweightof
theloadandyourspeedwhenoperatingonhills.
•Avoidstoppingonhills,especiallywithaload.
Stoppingwhilegoingdownahilltakeslongerthan
stoppingonlevelground.Ifyoumuststopthe
sprayer,avoidsuddenspeedchanges,whichmay
initiatetippingorrollingofthesprayer.Donot
suddenlyapplythebrakeswhenrollingbackward,
asthismaycausethesprayertooverturn.
•Reducespeedandloadwhenoperatingonrough
terrain,unevenground,andnearcurbs,holes,and
othersuddenchangesinterrain.Loadsmayshift,
causingthesprayertobecomeunstable.
WARNING
Suddenchangesinterrainmaycause
abruptsteeringwheelmovement,possibly
resultinginhandandarminjuries.
Usecarewhendrivingthemachinein
terrainthatchangesabruptly.
•Gripthesteeringwheellooselyaroundthe
perimeter.Keepyourhandsclearofthesteering
wheelspokes.
LoadingtheLiquid
Theweightofthecargocanchangethesprayer
centerofgravityandsprayerhandling.Toavoidloss
ofcontrolandpersonalinjury,followtheseguidelines:
•Liquidloadscanshift.Thisshiftinghappens
mostoftenwhileturning,goingupordownhills,
suddenlychangingspeeds,orwhiledrivingover
roughsurfaces.Shiftingloadscancausethe
sprayertotipover.
•Whenoperatingwithaheavyload,reduceyour
speedandallowforsufcientbrakingdistance.Do
notsuddenlyapplythebrakes.Useextracaution
onslopes.
•Beawarethatheavyloadsincreaseyourstopping
distanceandreduceyourabilitytoturnquickly
withouttippingover.
Maintenance
•Onlypermitqualiedandauthorizedpersonnelto
maintain,repair,adjust,orinspectthesprayer.
•Beforeperforminganymaintenance,ensure
thatthesystemhasbeenthoroughlyrinsedand
cleaned.
•Beforeservicingormakingadjustmentstothe
machine,shutofftheengine,settheparking
brake,andremovethekeytopreventsomeone
fromaccidentallystartingtheengine.
•Tomakesurethattheentiremachineisingood
condition,keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewsproperly
tightened.
•Toreducethepotentialforre,keeptheengine
areafreeofexcessivegrease,grass,leaves,and
dirt.
•Neveruseanopenametocheckthelevelor
leakageoffuelorbatteryelectrolyte.
•Iftheenginemustberunningtoperforma
maintenanceadjustment,keepyourhands,feet,
clothing,andanypartsofyourbodyawayfrom
theengineandanymovingparts.Keepeveryone
away.

•Donotuseopenpansoffuelorammable
cleaninguidswhencleaningparts.
•Donotadjustthetractioncontrolspeed.T oensure
safetyandaccuracy,haveanAuthorizedToro
Distributorcheckthegroundspeed.
•Keepyourbodyandhandsawayfrompin-hole
leaksornozzlesthatejecthigh-pressureuid.Use
cardboardorpapertondleaks.Fluidescaping
underpressurecanpenetrateskinandcause
injury,requiringsurgerywithinafewhoursbya
qualiedsurgeon;otherwisegangrenemayresult.
•Ifmajorrepairsareeverneededorassistanceis
required,contactanAuthorizedToroDistributor.
•Tobesureofoptimumperformanceandsafety,
alwayspurchasegenuineT ororeplacement
partsandaccessories.Replacementpartsand

Measurethespringsandusethejamnutto
compressthespringsto3.96cm(1.56inches),if
necessary.
Thesprayermaycomewiththeboomextensions
swungforwardtofacilitatepackagingofthemachine.
Thespringsarenotfullytightenedatthetimeof
manufacturetoallowtheboomstobeinthisposition
forshipping.Beforeoperatingthemachine,adjustthe
springstothecorrectcompression.
1.Ifnecessary,removethepackingcomponents
thatsecuretherightandleftextensionbooms
duringshipping.
2.Supporttheboomswhiletheyareextendedto
thesprayposition.
3.Attheboomhinge,measurethecompressed
heightoftheupperandlowersprings(Figure3).

BrakePedal
Usethebrakepedaltostoporslowthesprayer
(Figure8).
CAUTION
Ifyouoperatethesprayerwithpoorlyadjusted
orwornbrakes,youcouldlosecontrolofthe
sprayer,resultinginseriousinjuryordeath
toyouorbystanders.
Alwayscheckthebrakesbeforeoperatingthe
sprayerandkeepthemproperlyadjustedand
repaired.
ParkingBrake
Theparkingbrakeisapedaltotheleftofthebrake
(Figure8).Engagetheparkingbrakewheneveryou
planonleavingtheseattopreventthesprayerfrom
accidentlymoving.Toengagetheparkingbrake,
pressthebrakepedaland,whileholdingthebrake,
presstheparking-brakepedal.T odisengage,press
andreleasethebrakepedal.Ifthesprayerisparked
onasteepgrade,applytheparkingbrakeandplace
blocksonthedownhillsideofthewheels.
IgnitionSwitch
Theignitionswitch(Figure8),usedtostartandshut
offtheengine,has3positions:OFF,ON/PREHEAT,
andSTART.
Speed-LockSwitch
Thespeed-lockswitchlocksthepositionofthetraction
pedalatthetimethattheswitchisset(Figure9).This
ensuresthatthesprayertravelsataconstantspeed
whileyouaredrivingthemachineonlevelground.
