SONET BERT
The Home menu can be accessed at anytime during operation
by pressing the Home key on the rubber keypad. The screen is
divided into three presentation areas:
Left
Middle
Right
Home Menu
LEDs: Displays soft LEDs associated with Errors
and Alarms
Tools: IP connection status, Advanced IP features
(Net Wiz, WiFi Wiz, VoIP, and IPTV applications),
Fiber Scope, ReVeal EZ Connect
Utilities: Applications (Help, Settings, Files) which
are common to all VePAL handheld test sets
Test Applications specic to the test set (DS1, DS3,
SONET, Ethernet, Fiber Channel, 3.072G Testing,
Advanced Mode)
Start/Stop
Err Inj/Alarm: Tap to insert an error or alarm
Alarm/Err: Pull down menu with buttons for alarm
generation and error injection
LASER On/Off: Enables/Disables the Laser transmitter
on optical ports (SFP or XFP)




Congure Interface, Measurement and General settings; Line
rate, SONET Mapping, Framing, Pattern, Clock source and
Offset options are also congured in this screen.

Interface Menu
Operating Mode: Normal, Transparent and Payload Through
SONET Rate: Options are STS-1, OC-1, STS-3, OC-3, OC-
12, OC-48, OC-192 (referring to 51M, 155M, 622M, 2.5G
and 9.953G respectively)
Mapping: STS-192C, STS-48C, STS-12C, STS-3C, STS-1
and VT1.5 is available, VT-2 is optional. STS mappings
per Bellcore GR-253 and ANSI T1.105 rec. are supported
Pattern: select the test pattern in signal. Pseudo Random Bit
Sequences (PRBS) dened by ITU-T 0.150 and 0.151
standards, xed words and 24-bit or 32 bit user dened
patterns are available.
Measurement Menu
Mode: Manual, Timed and Auto selections are available
Analysis: Selects the ITU-T performance test that will be
performed by the unit. The selections include None,
G.821, G.826, G.828, G.829 and M.2100/1
General Menu
Congure the Audible Alarm, Results on start, and Auto Save
settings.

1. Connect to the test interface using the following:
−Single-mode ber patch cord to connect to a OC-x
(SFP) or 10G (XFP) interface
−BNC to connect to a DS3 or STS-3 interface
2. Power on the unit
3. From the SONET Home menu, tap on the Setup menu
4. Congure the pull down menu elds.
−Select Operating Mode and Test Rate

7. Congure the Structure for SONET mapping.

To configure fields that
require alpha or alpha-
numeric entry, such as
Frequency Offset and
STS channel selection,
a configuration keypad
will appear when the
applicable eld is selected.
Payload TX will appear
if Bulk selecon is OFF
in the Structure seng.
In Channel Selection,
enter the STS-N, VT-GRP,
VT-1.5 SPE channel.
Keypad will appear when
the eld is selected.
Mapping: Select the
mapping to test
Bulk: In bulk mode, the
entire VT container is lled
with a test pattern per ITU-T
0.181 recommendations
Tributary: Set to DS1, E1,
DS3, or E3 depending upon

9. Congure the Pattern.
10. Tap the Auto-cong button.
−A search for SONET signals at both the electrical or
optical inputs is performed to determine the signal
structure, signal type, rate, framing, pattern.
INVERT: Inversion of PRBS polarity is also available. Inversion of xed
words is not permitted.

Summary screen: Provides an overview of any alarms, errors
or signal failures.
Jump to SETUP menu – it will automatically stop the
measurements and go to the Setup screen.
Measurements are restarted. If the RX pattern eld is set to
AUTO, after the RESTART the RX will search for the incoming
pattern. Once the pattern is found, the TX will be congured
the same as the RX pattern detected. If the RX pattern cannot
be found, the RX will be set to LIVE mode and the TX will
send the pattern that it was congured to.
Results
11. When the test is started, the screen automatically moves to
the Results, Summary screen.
−Results can be viewed by selecting the following tabs:
Summary, Analysis, Errors/Alarms, Histogram, Graph,
Signal, and Event Log

Errors/Alarms screen: The soft LEDs on screen are arranged
logically and depend on signal hierarchy, structure, payload and
framing selected. The soft LEDs have a tri-color function.

Note: Tapping the individual soft LED will automatically link you to
the applicable results screen, which provides detailed information.
Green: No error or
alarm is present

12. When Timed or Auto mode of measurements are nished,
the testing will stop automatically. To stop the test suite
before that, press STOP.
13. To save the test results, press the store key on the
rubber keypad. The results le can be viewed in the FILES/
SAVED results index.

Event Log screen: Tap the Event Log tab to display a listing of
the Error and Alarm events recorded during a test.
EVENTS – presented in chronological sequence - number,
type of event, start time and duration, duration (alarms)
and ratio/count (errors) are displayed. Scroll through the
pages depending on the number of events recorded.
