Introduction
VeEX’s V-SAM test suite is fully compliant with ITU-T Y.1564 and
offers an efcient method to qualify and troubleshoot Ethernet
Services. V-SAM addresses some of RFC2544 limitations by
testing multiple services at once and providing simultaneous
measurements of key SLA parameters.
The purpose of the SAM test is to verify that the service is
compliant to its bandwidth prole and service acceptance criteria
and is broken down into two phases:
Phase (1) Service Conguration test. The services running on
the same line are tested one by one to verify the correct service
prole provisioning.
Phase (2) Service Performance test. The services running on the
same line are tested simultaneously over an extended period of
time, to verify network robustness.
This guide will describe the V-SAM setup and conguration for
frame headers and service attributes, including bandwidth and
service acceptance parameters.

Home Menu
The Home menu can be accessed at anytime during operation
by pressing the Home button on the rubber keypad or
the Home icon on the screen.
The screen is divided into three presentation areas:
LEDs: Displays so LEDs associated with Errors and Alarms
Tools: Management port IP connecon status, Fiber Scope, ReVeal EZ
Connect
Ulies: Applicaons (Help, Sengs, Files) common to all VePAL test sets
Test Applicaon Modes specic selecon (Loopback, IP, Advanced Tools,
V-SAM, RFC 2544, Throughput, BERT)
Test Port: Test interface selecons
MX Discover: For loopback device detecon

If a Layer 3 test is going to be performed, you must rst establish
an IP connection. If a Layer 2 test is to be performed, it is
recommended that an IP connection also be established to send
loop up/loop down commands to a remote unit.
To establish an IP connection, from the Home menu, tap the IP
menu and congure the connection for static or DHCP. If static,
congure the Local IP, Subnet, and Gateway IP addresses.
Congure a DNS server and VLAN tag if applicable.
IP Connection
When conguration is complete, press . If the connec-
tion is successful, the IP address, Gateway, and other elds will
be populated and the Connect button will toggle to Disconnect.

1. Connect to the test interface using the following:
−CAT 5/5E/6 cable to connect to a 10/100/1000Base-T
interface
−Multimode ber patch cord to connect to a 1000Base-SX
or 10GE 850 nm interface
−Single-mode ber patch cord to connect to a 1000Base-
LX or 10GE 1310 nm interface
2. Power on the unit
3. Tap on the Setup menu
4. Congure the test port settings in the Setup/Port Setup screen
−10/100/1000Base-T port settings: Auto Negotiation on or
off, forced speed and duplex, and Flow Control
−1000 Base-X port settings: Auto Negotiation on or off
and Flow Control
−10GE port settings: LAN & WAN mode selection and
Flow Control

5. Verify that the link is UP

menu.
7. From the Home menu, tap on the V-SAM menu

9. Use the blue key to congure the
parameters in the Service Conguraiton Test (skip this step
if Service conguration test is not enabled in the previous
screen).
−To modify the settings for whether the V-SAM test
continues or stops at a test failure, for STOP V-SAM on
TEST FAILURE, choose Enable or Disable. If Disable
is selected, V-SAM tests will continue even if failures
occur. If Enable is selected, the V-SAM test will stop at
the rst test failure.
−Choose from Simple, Step load, Simple and Step Load
Test. Enter the value and duration for the Bandwidth %
transmitted at each step.

10. Use the Services tab to congure parameters for each service.
11. Congure the Header tabs per
Service. Select the Service
Name, Frame Size Type, Frame
Size, Service Layer, Frame Type,
and VLAN tag if applicable.
−Use to copy the
Header settings from one
specic Service number to
one or more other Service
numbers.
12. Congure the MAC address (for Layer 2), IP address (for
Layer 3), IP header, VLAN tag, and test pattern.
To congure elds that require
alpha or alpha-numeric entry,
such as MAC and IP addresses,
a configuration keypad will
appear when the applicable
eld is selected.

14. Bandwidth Prole Parameters
−Enter CIR (Committed Information Rate) value in IR
or ULR units. This is the guaranteed maximum rate at
which the customer can send frames that are assured
to be forwarded through the network without being
dropped.
−Optional Enter EIR (Excess Information Rate) value in
IR or ULR units. Maximum rate above the CIR at which
the customer can send frames that will be forwarded on
a best effort basis, but may be dropped in the event of
congestion within the network.
−Enable/Disable Trafc Policing Test (this test ensures that
trafc in excess of CIR+EIR is not allowed in the network)
−If Trafc Policing Test is enabled, enter the trafc rate in
excess of CIR+EIR to be transmitted
−Optional Enter CBS (Committed Burst Size) and EBS
(Excess Burst Size) in kB
13. From the Service Attributes tab, congure the Bandwidth
Prole and Service Acceptance Parameters.
−Use to copy the Service Attributes settings
from one specic Service number to one or more other
Service numbers.

15. Service Acceptance Parameters: Denes the threshold
values for test Pass/Fail
−Enter FLR (Frame Loss Rate) threshold
−Optional Enter FTD (Frame Transfer Delay) threshold
−Optional Enter IFDV (Inter Frame Delay Variation) threshold
−Optional Enter AVAIL (availability) threshold. The service
becomes unavailable if more than 50% of the frames
are errored or missing in a one second interval.
16. Before starting the V-SAM test, a loopback at the far end is
required. Choose one of the following options:
−Place a physical loop at the far end (for Layer 1 tests)
−Setup a remote VePAL unit in Loopback mode, already
precongured at the far end.
−Setup a remote VePAL unit in loopback mode using
control commands (local and remote units need to be
congured with IP addresses). Tap the button.
−802.1ag OAM loopbacks are also supported (if 802.1ag
software option enabled). Tap the button.
Note: If the far end test partner is already in loopback mode (precongured
locally at the far end), there is no need to make use of the Control window

Results
17. Once all tabs have been congured, the test can be
started. At the end of the test, a loop down command must
be sent.
18. Press to begin the V-SAM test. Once started,
the screen automatically changes to the Results tabs.
The Conguration Tests and Performance Tests will be
done sequentially. Pass/Fail results will be provided in the
Summary page. For additional details use the Service tabs.
−CIR test: The test passes if all measured values are
below the thresholds congured. If a threshold is
disabled, it will not be evaluated towards pass/fail
criteria.
−CIR/EIR test: The test passes if the received IR value is
between the CIR (minus the margin allowed by the FLR)
and CIR+EIR.
−Policing test: The test passes if the received trafc rate
is at least at the CIR (minus the margin allowed by the
FLR) but does not exceed the allowed CIR+EIR.
−CBS test: The test passes if the frame loss rate stays
below the congured FLR.
19. Test proles can be stored and recalled for future
reference.
